Bro! I really appreciated the effort you put in to it. Very well scripted, beautifully shot, cut, suiting music and too notch narrating pace. I'm a film maker myself and its things like this that makes a whole lot of difference. It sucks to watch someone trying to teach you on a windy beach with little or no attention to how they've been mixing and so on. Keep pushing quality, this will be on the tube forever so it's definitely worth it and will generate views and subs in the long run. 🙏
Kales Broccoli this is a super well thought out video - no assumptions made in the student and concise, clear explanations. I don’t think I’ve seen anything better. Cheers, mate.
I started surfing a few months ago and timing is the most frustrating thing for me but this video was so helpful and gave me more confidence! Please keep making more! Pura vida from Costa Rica!
This video changed my surfing life! After watching it I found myself better able to spot waves and position myself. I started catching and riding so much more after this. Thank you so much!!!
It's a great idea to show the same waves and rides from multiple perspectives! It's so easy to stand on the shore and pick out good waves and take off points, a lot harder to do when you're in the water amongst the waves. I think you should also do this for other tutorials.
Ive seen this video at least 3 times and I'm gonna keep watching it because this info is so important. I really have no words. Best vid ever. Helped me A LOT. Thanks 🌊 u always make such great vids. U rlly helped me a lot ( tons) of my surfing progress and I'm really thankfull❤️
Thank you guys for being the best the best the best educational UA-cam channel on the internet hands down no one comes even close to you guys. I re-watch all your videos five and ten times and I'm becoming a better Surfer every single second that I watched you guys videos so please please please keep bringing the fire and thank you very much and happy surfing all the way from Virginia Beach Virginia
Excellent video training and tips! I’ve been surfing 20 years and there’s always something to learn. That break you were at doesn’t look too busy. Must be nice! Keep the video tips coming! Happy Barrels!
Great vid. I miss lots of waves by being too far out on the shoulder where I miss the steep power spot on the wave. Very frustrating to watch a good wave break 10 meters beside you while you are trying to catch it.
Really well put together, i have understood more from this than from any other surfer i have asked about wave selection and positioning thank you so much
Thank you. I was wondering how I would notice my first wave to catch as a beginner. At the end, you are right, the experiential element and intuition is a huge factor. Going with the flow and imagination. The more I see these videos, the more I feel it. Blessings😇
Great video as usual guys, and I am finding positioning is everything, and especially on beach breaks reading the waves is something you just have to get the experience with. Thanks for the great tips!!🤙
Point break is much better to catch waves but beach break can be harder. Even if you sit in breaking point, waves might close out. Local shaper who living in northern beaches catches waves much more than others including myself. He sit in bit close to the beach and aiming to catch smaller waves which have more space to turn. Besides he can manage board choices and building for types of waves. Paddling techniques are definitely necessary I guess.
this video was super helpful. sometimes i have trouble determining which direction the wave will break. can't wait to get out on the waves this weekend.
So appreciate your teaching & time to put this together. As I’m identifying the ‘ Look’ phase I was stoked to view previous session on ‘ Catch, POP, look. Thnks from NZ
I also pick landmarks on the beach/cliffs to help me stay in the best position consistently. Get in line with my landmark each time and I know I'm going to be pretty close to the best takeoff zone. I hope that helps.
Really helpful content Kales! I have the same view as you: good positioning is ALL about experience. Have to do with how you feel the sea beneath you, How the current pull you right before a big wave. Keep up the good Work, aloha from Brazil!
Thank you for all you do . It’s a life changing experience . So connected to the earth is a way I have never felt . It has brought back my lust for life .
Really great video! It really pulls together all the 'nuts and bolts' of getting to your feet. Trying to develop that awareness of what your environment is doing and responding to it. The part about 'mind-surfing' as your walking down the beach is bang on the money!
Thanks appreciate the videos Kale!! - Just moved to Freshwater, If you ever need a complete rookie in your vids let me know. I'm keen on learning and you could see what we rookies struggle hard with! and yeah..Keep those vids coming....
U did a great job of breaking it down its very difficult to explain all of the nuances of just reading the surf much less explaining taking off and riding the wave.
Just subscribed! Great channel, do you have a video on catching waves as a beginner on beach breaks? (I feel safest with a sandy bottom, so am often at El Porto / Manhattan etc in CA). It often feels like the waves are powerful and close out fast, with what seems like onshore winds. In turn, there is rarely a slow, beautiful wave like these, and I find it hard to catch them. I've ready that early mornings are best just in general for calmer conditions, but any recommendations, or videos you've made that could help would be appreciated! Matt
Hi guys, thanks for posting this. I noticed you (Kale) starting from a point a little to the inside (beach side) of the spot, then calculating and paddling out a bit before turning around. This seems better to me than sitting too far out, and having to race in, only to miss the wave. Since you did this, I will also continue to do it this way.
Jim McCarley yeah because it helps your positioning to always be facing the wave that you want to catch it allows for a better assessment of what’s going on. Almost could have mentioned it in the video but was getting too long
Thanks Kale. I understand about editing limits. You can't possibly cover everything. It's ok to generate ?? and interest. My wife does vid editing for horse sales. Just a 2 minute video takes at least 4, 5, or even 6 hours to shoot, clip, add sound, polish, and upload.
Really helpful video! absolutely love this channel! Just a shout though if you spit on/put washing up liquid in your go pro lens it stops water droplets getting in your shot (only ever noticed it on this video so you probably already know)
Love all your videos, thanks so much! I am a beginner slowly but surely progressing to green/unbroken waves but seem to either nose dive or drop off the face (bit slower at standing up) would love a video about key steps for catching these types of waves😀
Amy, I am also at this stage. I go to a beach break which is often too big for me. I have gone out a few times when the swell is smaller, and have found much more gentle waves. A slow, crumbly wave is much easier than the rapid forming giant walls that I often see there.
I surf down at Ocean grove main beach and was wondering if you’ve got any tips for that spot since it’s not to far from winki I thought you might have some experience there
What an awesome sensory intro! My geek left brain tells me that waves are simply the resultant energy of wind induced dynamic fluid laminar surficial tension flow. Thanks so much for sharing your right brain imagination 🤙
Hi Kales, thanks for your video, really useful. In the first part of the video, when you show how positioning on the wave coming, there's another surfer close to you, with a red longboard: you catch the wave, he fall down. Would you explain to us the reason why his positioning is wrong instead your? maybe you can use the same video, with the same frames to make another video :) thank you and bye
You guys the other day completely helped me answer my own question. The 2 3/8 thick is more gunny than i should be using, i need more volume. Thanks chargers! Nice to see you guys making consistent videos again! Yeeew!
Great Video, really helpful! This might be dumb question but what the heck...I recently started surfing, I've been doing it for 3 months and I'm completely hooked. I started surfing on a soft-board, size 8.6', now, I have a transition board, Bic Malibu 7.9, at this point I'm still acquiring basic skills and confidence with each wave I catch. looking forward, I can't imagine moving to a short board, it looks way to, well...short! When I surf an 8.6' or a 7.9' my legs are on the board, because It's long enough, this helps me to pop up to a standing position, because I have a firm surface to leap off of (maybe this is a mistake....?) can you please demonstrate how to correctly position yourself and pop up on a short board?
Really enjoyed putting together this tough edit guys! The surf got real sweet this day after I finished filming! Hope you enjoy :)

Yup that's what I keep doing rn. Catch it either too close to the peak and nosedive or dont catch it steep enough and trail behind the wave
