I can't speak for other Spinosaurus fans however, I can speak for myself and I can say that Spinosaurus interests me so much because of the mystery. Yes, when I was younger I wanted Spinosaurus to be this superior predatory monster that destroyed all in its path however, as an adult I now find Spinosaurus fascinating for its distinct features and ecological niche. Even if Spinosaurus turned out to be nothing more than an oversized sailed crocodilian, it interests me that it is seemingly the ONLY species in the class of Theropod to adapt fully to a semi-aquatic lifestyle, no other Theropod or any other Dinosaur for that matter can say the same. Sure, Spinosaurus' predecessors like Suchomimus and Baryonyx were adapted to catch fish but by no means were decent swimmers. What interests me even more about the creature is not what Spinosaurus is but rather, what it could have become. When you look at a group of animals such as the Mosasaurus and realize that they hail from land based reptiles, it really makes me wonder what Spinosaurus could have evolved into had the destruction of its habitat by rising ocean levels not been as fast as they had been. Considering Spinosaurus' already impressive size, being bigger than Tyrannosaurus Rex of all creatures in height and length, imagine what a leviathan Spinosaurus could have been when given the freedom of the open ocean. Perhaps it would have evolved to out compete Mosasaurus or Plesiosaurus but even better, perhaps Spinosaurus would've been able to dominate multiple niches in the prehistoric oceans. Even if Spinosaurus turned out to be a trunked blubbery seal or a semi-aquatic Dinosaur, Spinosaurus is the poster creature for the advancements we've made in the paleontological field. If you ask me, Spinosaurus is just as important to paleontology as Megalosaurus, the very first dinosaur found and documented. Watching Spinosaurus change so drastically over the years to where I myself can witness it further cements my love for the field and the species.

Though survival and combat can often come hand in hand, life seemingly prefers to take the path of least resistance and what is more least resisting than a giant murder croc with functioning arms? Spinosaurus was probably as large as it is in response to living with other massive predators. It probably used its size to intimidate those same predators. Really when you think about it that's the biggest flex of any carnivorous animal, why win battles when you can just be so damn scary no one wants to fight you? I personally believe that Spinosaurus was a specialist, sinking most of its time and resources into catching fish but I also think it played a role Tyrannosaurus Rex itself plays, the role of bully. I believe Spinosaurus used its size in order to bully other carnivorous Dinosaurs from their kills when the opportunity presented itself, why else would there be signs of conflict from these large predators in the fossil record if that was not the case? Other large carnivores didn't feed on fish as it did and they most likely didn't view Spinosaurus as prey so the only other option is being faced with competition. So at the very least, we Spinosaurus fans can take solace in the battle department using this argument. Spinosaurus was literally so large and scary that it encouraged other predators not to mess with it unless it was stealing their food and even then they wouldn't want to most of the time.

Not really, not much can be learned from fossils or artefacts whose context wasn't properly recorded and that is before you get to the very high likelihood that the bones in those composite fossils are usually heavily modified to hide the composite nature
More like they shouldn't be in private hands in the first place. Private collectors who want something "impressive" and "unique" and both hold on to important specimens and encourage the poaching and indiscriminate trade of fossils are a blight on science.

@@ksprice45 they are always stolen property. Never are private collections legally obtained. Hell a good amount of the collections in major museums were stolen. Literally almost every artefact on display in the London Metropolitan Museum and much of what is on display in the Smithsonian was stolen from other countries and smuggled to these locations.
I literally screamed with joy when they announced in 2014 a new Spino skeleton that had decent bones. Stromer (the man who found the Spino bones) lost almost everything during WW2. He was anti Nazi, but lost 2 out of 3 sons due to the war. His fossils were blown to bits. Only his detailed drawings remained. JP3 helped realized his dream of Spino being seen by the world. But that discovery in 2014 probably had his ghost crying tears of joy.🥲
Spinosaurus has been my favorite since I was a little kid, before it was cool. I ended up stumbling across the news by accident one time when I was browsing through Netflix when I had a cold one time - I came across the PBS doc about it, and I was super excited

Now they came up with another progressive stupidity that spinosaurus was marine in circumstances that if it swam it would turn around and the crest of the back would be down and the belly up exactly like the belly of ships therefore spinosaur was not marine and would have drowned in water .even if you make a spinosaurus model and put it in the water it flips upside down
@@gatoninja4387 I believe those studies (and indeed, those models) assumed Spinosaurus swam like a crocodile or early whale, but to my knowledge, studies wherein the animal swims more like a duck have not been performed, though I think it was postulated that such a posture would have shifted the animal’s center of gravity to where it could be upright. I don’t know if there would be evidence to back this up, but that is one possibility, and would also make sense considering the positioning of the nostrils is more like that of wading birds. Also keep in mind that we really don’t have a complete skeleton, and we don’t know what the sail was covered with. The exact type of flesh covering would likely change the math somewhat.
I was thinking about them in terms of Megaloceras (hear me out). When I went to Dublin a few years ago, I got to go to the natural history museum there, and on every wall of the first floor, they had Megaloceras skulls from end to end. This not only showed the wealth of Megaloceras skulls in Ireland (yes, I am defending the name Irish - Canada geese don't just live in Canada and nobody complains), but it also shows the variety in the antlers. Looking at the different spine morphotypes, my initial thought is that spinosaurus sails could have been as variable as antlers
Different thickness might also have something to do with different regions said spinosaurus was from, (ik this is barely related, but) like how grey wolves of the northern regions are on average larger than grey wolves further south.

Take in consideration that races can variate between the littlest details, that includes coloring, size and shapes of each parts of the body. Considering that those fossils have all been found at such distinct spots on the map, it is possible that certain spinos did adapt into different races thanks to different enviroments. That happens on modern days animals too, it could be a possibility

this is why private collectors are such a big issue. Artifacts, dinosaur bones etc shouldn't be in private collections in the first place, but in museums on display for everyone to see and so that scientists are able to study them.
I was reading a cool paper that basically integrated siggilmassasaurus into spinosaurus recently. They also implied Oxalia should be as well, hinting to more biological crossover between africa and south america

It doesn't make sense for implying that. First of all oxalia was only known by some jaw fragments and jaws look overall similar in every spinosaurus species. We also don't have anymore oxalia remains to proof /debunk this theory since the only remains of oxalia were destroyed during the burning of the Brazilian history museum. So overall i wouldn't put too much in that study since this was also once the chase for suchomimus and baryonx

The thing that gets me is how the skull is changed with each new reconstruction with seemingly no new material or very little material from the skull to warrant it. Really interested in knowing the justification behind that or whether I'm just overlooking/overanalyzing it. Noticed it mostly when drawing spinosaurus and seeing atleast 4 different skulls in just the 2020 (tail discovery) reconstructions.

To dismiss the work of the paleontologists who unearthed not one but multiple skeletons of this species and who, in addition, prepared and described said bones for their formal study, without concrete arguments, is not only pretentious but also unscientific. PS: the Spinosaurus skull is known, what happens is that it is not complete in any of the specimens, so extrapolations are necessary from several specimens, as well as from other spinosaurids, so that the way it is reconstructed today the skull of Spinosaurus itself is justified
I find it so infuriating to hear that so many of these significant fossils are unavailable in private collections! If these collectors "love" science and dinosaurs so much why not offer up their fossils for study, loan to a museum for a price, or at the very least allow them to be digitally scanned and replicated. Ugh, people suck!
People do but the fossil loses its value once copied etc and as collectors are motivated by this they will never change and allow copies to be made or donate the item or even loan it

Personally i think the sail is a male display, not on a female, like with the Green basilisk lizard, males have a large sail, female has nothing as on a female it's a hassel in the way, thinking on how lizards, birds, crocodilians mate, they pretty much climb on the females back, a sail on a female would be in the way, if you was to make two sails and fit them on a pair Gharial for example, i can't see any successful mating happening in or out of water, imo same for the Spinosaurus.
@@trolgeeeeee As far as i'm aware all specimens are all incomplete (some better than others), some examples, there are two specimens found one in Morocco in 2003 just the lower jaw. Another also Morocco in 2005 just the upper jaw, so not a specimens include the spine. I believe the current best most complete specimen was found in Morocco 2014, that included fragments of skull, neck, ribs, some spine including mostly fragmented sail bones, with only one intact sail bone and mostly complete legs and tail. The most complete spine sail bones with seven intact sail bones come from a specimen from Egypt in 1915, also had fragments of skull, neck, ribs.

Even though my favorite dinosaur is the tyrannosaurus I have to admit the Spinosaurus along with the omnivore deinochirus are probably some of the most unique and interesting dinosaurs out there.

I am no paleonthologist, nor am I a biologist. Yet long before watching this video, having watched other videos and read articles about Spinosaurus, I had learned how different findings and new researches concerning it have led into very different, drastically changing theories about what Spinosaurus looked like: How long was it? Was it bipedal or quadrupedal? Was it semi aquatic or fully aquatic? What shape of tail did it have? Just during the 21 century alone, all these things have been changing in its depictions, without there being a consensus in the scientific community. Eventually, all this conflicting information made me come to the conclusion that maybe Spinosaurus was not, in fact, a single species, as it has been portrayed, but several species of the same genus. This video has made me even more certain of my theory. It was a joy to watch.
Why would these private collectors not want to know everything about their specimen by giving it over to proper scientific examination ? They would get it back. Pasting together unconfirmed pieces with plaster, what's the point of that?
Fossils of scientific and public interest shouldn't be allowed to be in private collections. It's a safe bet that most of these private collections are in the USA.

Spinosarus is my favorite dinosaur predator i hope one day they find whether privately and we hope that person donates it or it is bought by someone benevolent and donated or on a local museum expedition, a semi perfect of perfectly fossilized spinosaurus that can put to bed most of issues of reconstructing and kick out what shouldn't belong, but one can dream i still find it hard to believe spinosaurus is like the dinosaur crocodile even if it was able to swim well, it would be just as capable on land i find hard to believe the posture they put it in when walking the legs look too short to me, and why would it have the enormous hand claws if it was eating fish as its main meal, all it needs is a robust long skull as those fish at that time were huge can't have a flimsy ghariel skull and claws matching have to make sense and the body looks too long imo but one day i maybe right i maybe completely wrong just need that semi perfect or perfect fossil.
I like the idea of Oxalaia quilombensis being a true species or at least a subspecies because it's first name is based on an african-brazilian religion deity and the second is based on where it was found, a quilombo, communities founded by ex slaves, it was one of the ways to resist colonization and slavery, if it was proven that the species is just a Spinosaurus aegyptiacus, the whole homage wouldn't be it's official name

I have some doubts and suspicions about the 2014 design, especially with the back legs being too short for the dinosaur. For all we know they could be the back legs of another theropod dinosaur. And now this weird tail paddle added for the 2020, it might be from a mosasaur or a giant newt/salamander. Though I don’t mind the design of the spines of spinosaurus, since that design could help spinosaurus out while fishing for fish.
As these specimens were found in relatively the same place, I wouldn't bet that these aren't Spinosaurus. And I doubt a mosasaur would have found it's way into the narrow flatbeds and deltas that is the Kem-Kem Beds.
I believe that Spinosaurus individuals have individual spines to identify different individuals or to show maturity among the species I Donno it's just a theory 🤷
I don't care how much you think you know, I fail to see how you can declare anything with a few scraps of bone. One fragment here and there does not mean you can say what species, what size and shape the other 99% of the bones look like.

@@Deform-2024 you compare it to other bones of similar species of the same era whose skills more complete. If you was to compare the remains of 3 fragments of modern lions in a million years time, you'd be stomped what it looked like. But if you had a tiger, leopard, etc you'd be able to guess. Obviously you would not compare it to that of a hippo skull or anteater, but you get the drift. As you get more specimens, you toss out the old depictions for a more precise depiction. To be honest, a lion and leopard are close enough that 99% of a guess would be close to what a lion looked like. The only issue you'd have is not guessing things like s mane . This is the features you'd never guess and why there's a debate on dinosaurs with feathers right now.

I agree that oxalia isn't spinosaurus or shouldn't be considered being one since we don't have the fossils to proof. And skull material is overall similar in spinosauroids. And many dinosaurs that once had been thought to be just continental variants have been turned out to be their own genus like giraffatitan
There's noway to know even 50% much less 100% appearance of a long extinct animal. The color is definitely wrong, their backlegs weren't strong enough to lift it's whole 7-9ton body. Also they could've had feathers

Spinosaurus was probably as large as it is in response to living with other massive predators. It probably used its size to intimidate those same predators.
Really when you think about it that's the biggest flex of any carnivorous animal, why win battles when you can just be so damn scary no one wants to fight you?
I personally believe that Spinosaurus was a specialist, sinking most of its time and resources into catching fish but I also think it played a role Tyrannosaurus Rex itself plays, the role of bully.
I believe Spinosaurus used its size in order to bully other carnivorous Dinosaurs from their kills when the opportunity presented itself, why else would there be signs of conflict from these large predators in the fossil record if that was not the case?
Other large carnivores didn't feed on fish as it did and they most likely didn't view Spinosaurus as prey so the only other option is being faced with competition.
So at the very least, we Spinosaurus fans can take solace in the battle department using this argument. Spinosaurus was literally so large and scary that it encouraged other predators not to mess with it unless it was stealing their food and even then they wouldn't want to most of the time.

Not really, not much can be learned from fossils or artefacts whose context wasn't properly recorded and that is before you get to the very high likelihood that the bones in those composite fossils are usually heavily modified to hide the composite nature
More like they shouldn't be in private hands in the first place. Private collectors who want something "impressive" and "unique" and both hold on to important specimens and encourage the poaching and indiscriminate trade of fossils are a blight on science.

Literally almost every artefact on display in the London Metropolitan Museum and much of what is on display in the Smithsonian was stolen from other countries and smuggled to these locations.
I literally screamed with joy when they announced in 2014 a new Spino skeleton that had decent bones.
Stromer (the man who found the Spino bones) lost almost everything during WW2.
He was anti Nazi, but lost 2 out of 3 sons due to the war. His fossils were blown to bits. Only his detailed drawings remained.
JP3 helped realized his dream of Spino being seen by the world.

Spinosaurus has been my favorite since I was a little kid, before it was cool. I ended up stumbling across the news by accident one time when I was browsing through Netflix when I had a cold one time - I came across the PBS doc about it, and I was super excited

Now they came up with another progressive stupidity that spinosaurus was marine in circumstances that if it swam it would turn around and the crest of the back would be down and the belly up exactly like the belly of ships therefore spinosaur was not marine and would have drowned in water .even if you make a spinosaurus model and put it in the water it flips upside down
@@gatoninja4387 I believe those studies (and indeed, those models) assumed Spinosaurus swam like a crocodile or early whale, but to my knowledge, studies wherein the animal swims more like a duck have not been performed, though I think it was postulated that such a posture would have shifted the animal’s center of gravity to where it could be upright. I don’t know if there would be evidence to back this up, but that is one possibility, and would also make sense considering the positioning of the nostrils is more like that of wading birds. Also keep in mind that we really don’t have a complete skeleton, and we don’t know what the sail was covered with. The exact type of flesh covering would likely change the math somewhat.

I was thinking about them in terms of Megaloceras (hear me out).
When I went to Dublin a few years ago, I got to go to the natural history museum there, and on every wall of the first floor, they had Megaloceras skulls from end to end. This not only showed the wealth of Megaloceras skulls in Ireland (yes, I am defending the name Irish - Canada geese don't just live in Canada and nobody complains), but it also shows the variety in the antlers. Looking at the different spine morphotypes, my initial thought is that spinosaurus sails could have been as variable as antlers
Different thickness might also have something to do with different regions said spinosaurus was from, (ik this is barely related, but) like how grey wolves of the northern regions are on average larger than grey wolves further south.

Take in consideration that races can variate between the littlest details, that includes coloring, size and shapes of each parts of the body. Considering that those fossils have all been found at such distinct spots on the map, it is possible that certain spinos did adapt into different races thanks to different enviroments. That happens on modern days animals too, it could be a possibility

this is why private collectors are such a big issue. Artifacts, dinosaur bones etc shouldn't be in private collections in the first place, but in museums on display for everyone to see and so that scientists are able to study them.

I was reading a cool paper that basically integrated siggilmassasaurus into spinosaurus recently. They also implied Oxalia should be as well, hinting to more biological crossover between africa and south america

It doesn't make sense for implying that. First of all oxalia was only known by some jaw fragments and jaws look overall similar in every spinosaurus species. We also don't have anymore oxalia remains to proof /debunk this theory since the only remains of oxalia were destroyed during the burning of the Brazilian history museum.
So overall i wouldn't put too much in that study since this was also once the chase for suchomimus and baryonx

Spinosaurus seems to have some bad luck when it comes to its fossils.
The thing that gets me is how the skull is changed with each new reconstruction with seemingly no new material or very little material from the skull to warrant it. Really interested in knowing the justification behind that or whether I'm just overlooking/overanalyzing it. Noticed it mostly when drawing spinosaurus and seeing atleast 4 different skulls in just the 2020 (tail discovery) reconstructions.

Each naked bum who publishes some bull shit paper in a "journal", based on one or two bone fragments, advances his career, and leaves you with one more fake picture of a whole animal that never existed. To dismiss the work of the paleontologists who unearthed not one but multiple skeletons of this species and who, in addition, prepared and described said bones for their formal study, without concrete arguments, is not only pretentious but also unscientific.
PS: the Spinosaurus skull is known, what happens is that it is not complete in any of the specimens, so extrapolations are necessary from several specimens, as well as from other spinosaurids, so that the way it is reconstructed today the skull of Spinosaurus itself is justified
I find it so infuriating to hear that so many of these significant fossils are unavailable in private collections! If these collectors "love" science and dinosaurs so much why not offer up their fossils for study, loan to a museum for a price, or at the very least allow them to be digitally scanned and replicated. Ugh, people suck!
People do but the fossil loses its value once copied etc and as collectors are motivated by this they will never change and allow copies to be made or donate the item or even loan it

Personally i think the sail is a male display, not on a female, like with the Green basilisk lizard, males have a large sail, female has nothing as on a female it's a hassel in the way, thinking on how lizards, birds, crocodilians mate, they pretty much climb on the females back, a sail on a female would be in the way, if you was to make two sails and fit them on a pair Gharial for example, i can't see any successful mating happening in or out of water, imo same for the Spinosaurus.

@@trolgeeeeee As far as i'm aware all specimens are all incomplete (some better than others), some examples, there are two specimens found one in Morocco in 2003 just the lower jaw. Another also Morocco in 2005 just the upper jaw, so not a specimens include the spine. I believe the current best most complete specimen was found in Morocco 2014, that included fragments of skull, neck, ribs, some spine including mostly fragmented sail bones, with only one intact sail bone and mostly complete legs and tail. The most complete spine sail bones with seven intact sail bones come from a specimen from Egypt in 1915, also had fragments of skull, neck, ribs.

I am no paleonthologist, nor am I a biologist. Yet long before watching this video, having watched other videos and read articles about Spinosaurus, I had learned how different findings and new researches concerning it have led into very different, drastically changing theories about what Spinosaurus looked like: How long was it? Was it bipedal or quadrupedal? Was it semi aquatic or fully aquatic? What shape of tail did it have? Just during the 21 century alone, all these things have been changing in its depictions, without there being a consensus in the scientific community. Eventually, all this conflicting information made me come to the conclusion that maybe Spinosaurus was not, in fact, a single species, as it has been portrayed, but several species of the same genus.
This video has made me even more certain of my theory. It was a joy to watch.

Spinosarus is my favorite dinosaur predator i hope one day they find whether privately and we hope that person donates it or it is bought by someone benevolent and donated or on a local museum expedition, a semi perfect of perfectly fossilized spinosaurus that can put to bed most of issues of reconstructing and kick out what shouldn't belong, but one can dream i still find it hard to believe spinosaurus is like the dinosaur crocodile even if it was able to swim well, it would be just as capable on land i find hard to believe the posture they put it in when walking the legs look too short to me, and why would it have the enormous hand claws if it was eating fish as its main meal, all it needs is a robust long skull as those fish at that time were huge can't have a flimsy ghariel skull and claws matching have to make sense and the body looks too long imo but one day i maybe right i maybe completely wrong just need that semi perfect or perfect fossil.

I like the idea of Oxalaia quilombensis being a true species or at least a subspecies because it's first name is based on an african-brazilian religion deity and the second is based on where it was found, a quilombo, communities founded by ex slaves, it was one of the ways to resist colonization and slavery, if it was proven that the species is just a Spinosaurus aegyptiacus, the whole homage wouldn't be it's official name

I have some doubts and suspicions about the 2014 design, especially with the back legs being too short for the dinosaur. For all we know they could be the back legs of another theropod dinosaur. And now this weird tail paddle added for the 2020, it might be from a mosasaur or a giant newt/salamander. Though I don’t mind the design of the spines of spinosaurus, since that design could help spinosaurus out while fishing for fish.
As these specimens were found in relatively the same place, I wouldn't bet that these aren't Spinosaurus. And I doubt a mosasaur would have found it's way into the narrow flatbeds and deltas that is the Kem-Kem Beds.
I believe that Spinosaurus individuals have individual spines to identify different individuals or to show maturity among the species

I don't care how much you think you know, I fail to see how you can declare anything with a few scraps of bone. One fragment here and there does not mean you can say what species, what size and shape the other 99% of the bones look like.

@@Deform-2024 you compare it to other bones of similar species of the same era whose skills more complete.
If you was to compare the remains of 3 fragments of modern lions in a million years time, you'd be stomped what it looked like. But if you had a tiger, leopard, etc you'd be able to guess. Obviously you would not compare it to that of a hippo skull or anteater, but you get the drift. As you get more specimens, you toss out the old depictions for a more precise depiction.
To be honest, a lion and leopard are close enough that 99% of a guess would be close to what a lion looked like. The only issue you'd have is not guessing things like s mane . This is the features you'd never guess and why there's a debate on dinosaurs with feathers right now.
Maybe the real spinosaurus was the friends we made along the way

Spinosaurus is definitely one of my favorites. Although not necessarily accurate I love seeing them wandering around the coasts lines in Ark.
We seriously need more Spinosaurus specimens in order for the genus to be fully recognised. But till then, nothing about it is fully definite.

Spinosaurus is so rare and when I become a paleontologist I want to find a spinosaurus fossil

I agree that oxalia isn't spinosaurus or shouldn't be considered being one since we don't have the fossils to proof. And skull material is overall similar in spinosauroids. And many dinosaurs that once had been thought to be just continental variants have been turned out to be their own genus like giraffatitan

There's noway to know even 50% much less 100% appearance of a long extinct animal. The color is definitely wrong, their backlegs weren't strong enough to lift it's whole 7-9ton body. Also they could've had feathers

I think it moved it's head like a bird, and looked a bit derpy like birds too when facing front, and it had slick hydrophobic(?) feathers or dinofuzz. Let's see if this turns out to be true in the future
