  • Haroon Moghul is a Fellow in the National Security Studies Program at New America Foundation. He's also a Ph.D. Candidate at Columbia University's Department of Middle Eastern, South Asian, and African Studies, where he focuses on Islamic thought in colonial India. Haroon is the Fellow in Muslim Politics and Societies at the Center on National Security at Fordham Law and is on the Board of the Multicultural Audience Development Initiative at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
    Mr. Moghul is an Associate Editor and columnist at Religion Dispatches; his writing has also been featured on al-Jazeera and Foreign Policy. In his novel, "The Order of Light" (Penguin 2006), young Muslims light themselves on fire to protest the authoritarian reality of the Middle East, an eerie forecasting of recent events. Haroon has appeared on CNN, BBC, NPR, The History Channel, al-Jazeera, and Russia Today. He enjoys teaching, and serves as an expert guide to the Muslim heritage of Spain, Turkey, and Bosnia.
    In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

      @@George-iv1hi here are a few. He predicted many things we see today such as Arabs competeing to build tall towers (that's happening now in Dubai and Saudi Arabia), rain will be burning (acid rain), people will be able go great distances in short time spans (cars, planes, etc), a man's hip/thigh will tell him what's happening at home (cell phones). These are just a few. Keep in mind this was all predicted by an illiterate man in the middle of the desert 1500 years ago. No matter your beliefs you can't deny that's impressive.

      @ali bazzi Do you know that the Romans always said they never started a war? In every case, Rome claimed it was attacked, or a country that they were allied to was attacked. Even Julius Caesar, in his Gallic Wars, claimed he was just minding his own business when he went into Gaul and only began the war after he was attacked by the Gauls. He justified his war to the Romans back home by claiming it was a defensive action. No one believed him, of course, but he used that as a justification. What is clear is that Rome engaged in conquest for about 1000 years before Islam put an end to it. What is clear is that Islam has been engaging in conquest for its entire history, however they justified it, wiping out entire civilizations and cultures. In 1786, Thomas Jefferson and John Adams inquired of Tripoli’s ambassador to Britain why the Barbary States preyed on American shipping, they were informed that according to the laws of their prophet, Muslims had a “right and duty” to make war on all nations that did not acknowledge their authority. Enough said.

America itself has got plenty of all you just mentioned and they are doing pretty much everything you said in your comment, including the denying part and have your heard of those return of the kings guys? So why link those to Islam? It's like you said, can't admit error. You speak of a religion you know nothing about and try your best to prove yourself right by searching for reasons, when people like ISIS break just about every rule presented in the Qur'an. The bad stories you hear about our prophet pale in comparison to the good ones. I don't want to hurt you. I don't want to hurt anyone. I just wanna live my life and do what's right. Does that make me a bad Muslim? Does that make my family, my mosque, my community, bad Muslims? It says in the Qur'an that when Ignorance stares you in the face, all you must say is peace.

      Adrian Sean Heidmann What do you mean “there wasn’t a single period of peace”? Where are you getting your information from? Yes, there was peace, there was also liberation, and equality that did not exist in the Arab peninsula before Islam cane about. There is no contradiction in Islam. That’s a fact. Research it for yourself instead of robotically repeating what you hear on the media, which itself is singularly-controlled. Did you know that there are people out there who own so many different news outlets, all going by different names? Rupert Murdoch is an example of this. He owns a LOT (search it up for full details), including the Times, Sun, and other newspapers. If, for example, someone like that we’re to have a certain ideology or view, it would be implanted into ALL of the different branches of their corporation. So when you hear the same old Islamophobic comments in the news, it’s simply because they’re mostly all controlled. Don’t be indoctrinated.

    This man is allowed to teach at Columbia University? Strange, because Haroon Moghul is ignorant of historical facts or is deliberately misleading, perhaps that's the real reason he didn't put up any maps. As for Spain, although there is a popular myth that Spain was ruled by the Moors, there never was a conquest of Spain by the Muslim world (or Jewish), as there was no such thing as one united country known as Spain. Moreover, at that time, the Iberian Peninsula was comprised of many Catholic Kingdoms and the Moors never ruled over those Catholic Kingdoms. The Moors simply occupied parts of the Iberian Peninsula separate from the Catholic Kingdoms. During the Moorish occupation of the Iberian Peninsula, the Christian Kingdoms, fought non-stop with them, until the Moors were squeezed into Andalusia where the war continued until the Reconquest. Accordingly, most of the 800 years of Moorish occupation was spent only in Andalusia, and at at all times there was war.

      Agreed. But this is what academia is becoming. No longer the place for the free exchange of ideas, political correctness and cultural relativism are apparently much more welcome at Columbia than are truth, critical thinking or freedom of expression. Meanwhile, Ayaan Hirsi Ali is banned from speaking at Brandeis for holding accurate (critical, I mean) views on islam. A disgrace. Truly despicable. Using Western democracy and academia as tools for spreading anti-democratic, anti-intellectual beliefs. Using the education system to lower education standards. Brilliant, if it weren't so evil.

      You just know people don’t care or don’t want to know the truth if they don’t ask properly about Islam and are just drawn to weird stories without any source.. If you really wanna know what is Islam there are clear core values. You are Muslim if you believe in one god and believe in his prophets (as messengers not gods) then you live a life of peace no harm to any soul, feeding the poor, abiding by women’s rights and free will and more. Caring for the children. Never kill women’s and Children. Attack only when you are under attack. 1st Islam is all in the Quran a holy book and not a book written by human. 2nd in prophet Mohammed peace be upon him life story these are books written by people who live on that age so there are some fluctuations from one scholar to the other about the details. However if you talk about Islam you talk about the Quran that’s the one true word no 2 can ever disagree on it’s the only holy book on earth that has only 1 version. The teaching in the Quran are the Islamic teachings. Islam is Doing good and entrusting every day to god knowing that good things will follow from Allah whether in this life or in the after life (Muslim means submission to god) to the extent that we would rather be killed than kill. In Islam Anyone who dies killing innocent people even if he/she claims it’s in the name of Allah/god will find punishments as they are not following the Quran’s or the prophets teachings. Finding the truth requires little effort just don’t get misguided by haters or the clout-chasing titles before you even dive into the real Islam. Trust me you will be pleasantly surprised I became a Muslim and I couldn’t be any happier living in peace and knowing that no good deed I do will ever go in vain even if some one steals and I couldn’t get my right back because life is unfair I simply entrust it to god and I continue to do good. Allah is the kindest and most patient and his blessings on us are countless yet we never worship him nor thank him enough. He gave us this beautiful earth, the sky, our functioning bodies and organs all working in unbelievable harmony that no man was ever able to imitate.. robots? Cars? Planes ? They pale in comparison to humans, animals, birds, insects even plants and flowers. The is a maker for everything in this world so who made us as humans that are making these machines.. someone Great and Almighty that’s far greater than us for us to be able to be so smart. Pleas open your eyes and see beyond the media and the misleading information. Hope you have a good day. We are all stuck in quarantine might as well learn about our own selves our own being and how this virus has easily stoped life. It’s time we reflected on our selves and how weak we are to god’s will even if we thought we were at our strongest a tiny organism defeated us. It doesn’t take much to know the truth yet all this noise to prevent us from realizing the true meaning of our life. They just have to make it difficultly when all the prophets said one thing worship one god. Yet humans kept altering the holy books and changing until the Quran came as the final holy book that god has protected as a gift and a lasting miracle to us as no prophet will be coming along anymore.

    Umma translates to "Nation" in which all people from all background and races are considered as a one body with no differences. Prophet Muhammad's Tribe was one of the strongest, if not the strongest, which is historically well-established. The take the presenter Haroon has and his approach to this is a very abstract approach which doesn't take into consideration the full context of the Prophet, but rather considers him as a "thinker or a philosopher", which defeat the purpose of understanding Islam as a religion, at least from this prospective. These points may remain minor to those are unfamiliar with what this means in the big picture, but they are rather fundamental when approaching this matter.
    It always makes me wonder, how PHD student nowadays could get away with major flaws with their thesis that they use to be called a "Doctor".
    There is a very amateur and superficial understanding to politics in general, the policy makers who make these policies and the reason that that drives the creation of these policies.

  • @TigrisVoice
    @TigrisVoice 5 років тому +1

    As a practitioner of critical thinking I check the authenticity of the ideas expressed by followers. Haroon says that faith gives a human perspective and that is what Islam does, I agree in a sense that humans can be wise, kind and deep, or humans can be serial killers, both are human qualities. Be a religious fanatic is also a human behaviour, but if we try to take in the positive way what Haroon means by "human" and we interpret it as the promotion of humanism then that is not applicable to Islam. The only fact that Islamic imposes or advice the principle that humans must abandon his/her condition of freedom and must be slaves of Allah, states that humans are not supposed to be humans in its natural way, humans, according to Islam must be narrow minded believers whom must dedicate their lives worshipping Allah and fight to convert by the word or by the sword the non believers.Humans are not allow to free themselves of the straitjacket of religion.

    I really enjoyed his talk and he explained it beautifully the real impact that Islam has on mans life. The impact of the relationship with man and his Creator that satisfies the human mind. The relationship with the individual with himself and society and the world. He explained how Islam is basically an idea or viewpoint about life with systems to implement the whole idea of God is the Creator and man should serve Him willing (submission). The word Islam means submission to the Will of God, but Judaism and Christianity fell short of this task or responsibility. Also, God is the legislator for mankind His subjects, basically Islam is an ideology like Capitalism and Socialism. The Western concept of religion is that it's relegated to the church on Sunday with moral conduct the rest of the week. But Islam is a comprehensive way of life regulating hygiene, social and political matters, etc. etc, etc. Islam covers all of man's needs and problems. The doctor did a good job explaining and its relevance today in 2019.

    I am also convergent to the idea of world unity and equality. but I reached that idea from history, politics, economics, humanism and several others disciplines and intelectual points of views that I exposed myself to. I didnt realize that it is a great idea because of religion, so it shouldnt be necesary religion to make it a reality all over the world. But if I would be saying this in the muslim territory, Would my idea and myself be respected?
    Some ideas of Muhammad are great, some ideas of jesus are great, some ideas of buda are great, and obviously we can learn from them, the problem is that those ideas should not be forced into people by any means, just because those are good ideas. And that is what some people are afraid of. I am not afraid of islam, I am not afraid of muslims, I am afraid that because one or two statements in the bible, or in the quran, one individual,( jew, christian or muslim,) does something against me just because he or she thinks he or she is entitled to do so.
    I really like the idea of jihad, THE STRUGGLE to be a better human being; for muslims, the struggle to be in the way of god. But I am afraid of the idea that some jihadists have, that if I am a disbeliever I am wrong so their jihad is cutting my head off.
    Every single religion has at least one thing to teach to the world for the benefit of mankind, but I think that those ideas can be learnt from other sources different to religion, so a particular religion is not an obligation for becomig a better human being.
    And because of that idea, I am thinking:
    What can the middle east and muslims learn from the western world and the far east? and will the islam accept it?

    Allah - there is no deity except Him, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer of [all] existence. Neither drowsiness overtakes Him nor sleep. To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. Who is it that can intercede with Him except by His permission? He knows what is [presently] before them and what will be after them, and they encompass not a thing of His knowledge except for what He wills. His Knowledge [throne] extends over the heavens and the earth, and their preservation tires Him not. And He is the Most High, the Most Great.

    The idea that Muhammed gave a more advanced message to mankind is confirmed by the revelation of Baha'u'llah. Now the challenge for Islam is to understand that their own scholars misinterpreted the term "seal of the prophets" which Baha'u'llah says applies to all the prophets of God and that the "return" has happened and like the Christians and Jews before them, they too missed it. 20,000 Babi's gave their lives at the hands fo the Muslim clergy in order to usher in that new message. Think about it.

      @geochaben a small educational session since you’re too lazy to search but are busy spreading rumors or you just do not wanna learn the truth because you just enjoy believing you’re right in your mind. But just in case you really didn’t know here you can find verses form the Quran that clearly forbid murder in Islam of all kinds to both non-Muslims and between Muslims (unless someone attacks you, is a murder or made actions that made him eligible for a death sentence whether a Muslim or non-Muslim)
      - “[w]hoever kills a soul unless for a soul or for corruption [done] in the land - it is as if he had slain mankind entirely. And whoever saves one - it is as if he had saved mankind entirely.”
      (5:32 - Saheeh International translation)
      - “And do not kill the soul which Allah has forbidden [to be killed] except by [legal] right. This has He instructed you that you may use reason."
      (6:151 - Saheeh International translation)
      - “Indeed, those who have believed [in Prophet Muhammad] and those [before Him] who were Jews or Sabeans or Christians - those [among them] who believed in Allah and the Last Day and did righteousness - no fear will there be concerning them, nor will they grieve.”
      (5:69 - Saheeh International translation)

      @gbennett58 4 роки тому

      @@rany9643 Lying in a holy cause (taqiyyah) by a movement that believes its god is the greatest deceiver, it is impossible to believe in or debate with a follower of this cause. You refer to a prohibition of killing those Allah has forbidden to be killed, which obviously refers to those who accept Allah as the only god and Muhammed is his prophet, all others being fair game. The best case regarding the violence of Islam is its uninterrupted history of conquest and forced conversion that continues to this day, for example look at Isis for an example of recent beheaddings, tossing homosexuals from heights, etc, but since you evoke the Quran:
      “Kill them [unbelievers] wherever you find them… And fight them until there is no more unbelief and worship is for Allah alone” (Quran 2:191-193).
      “Strike off their heads and strike from them every fingertip” (Quran 8:12).
      “Allah has purchased from the believers their lives and their properties; in exchange for that they will have Paradise. They fight in the cause of Allah, so they slay and are slain” (Quran 9:111).
      “Truly Allah loves those who fight in His cause in battle array…” (Quran 61:4)
      Of course you will say it is taken out of context, or must be read in Arabic to be understood, but that is just another example of taqiyyah.

    • @gbennett58
      @gbennett58 4 роки тому

      @@rany9643 Also, you mentioned "unless someone attacks you" as an exception to the rule not to murder. Interestingly, in all the wars Islam has been involved in, in every case they claimed they had been attacked, hence they claim they never started a war. When Muhammad beheaded something like 800 Jews & also enslaving their wives and children because they did not recognize his status as a prophet, the excuse was made they had taken sides against him in a war. Excuses, excuses. It's the results that matter, and 1,400 years of conquest and forced conversion with murder as the alternative are all that matter.

  • @mredwardgibbon

    Nice story, dude.
    But please...let's not pretend that Islam expanded because hundreds of Muslims everywhere in the early days were humanitarian tourists who decided "hey! Let's all go on vacation to Ethiopia and the middle east and improve everyone's life by getting them to join our religious movement by asking nicely and being friendly. Then, after a couple hundred years or so, swing by Constantinople to say hello to the pope. Then, let's all go to Spain and make friends with all the locals there and live happily ever after!"
    We know very little about the life and culture from the middle east except from what we read about in various expeditions to there and maybe the occasional letter here or there from one country to the other. Why should we assume that all those things you told us about Muhammad and Middle Eastern culture (most of which come from the hadith) are 100% true? Not even muslims agree on which sayings of the hadith are factual or not, so why are you making it seem like the opposite?
    How can you expect us to believe what you are telling us about Muhammad if your own religion can't even agree on what he said and did?

    I think his idea that political Islam is about a tribal identity as opposed to a platform for human solidarity is incorrect. Political Islam sees itself as one of only two tribes. The tribe of the god fearing, the Muslims, and the tribe of the unbelievers. Muhammad indeed was building human solidarity that went beyond parochial tribal loyalties and ethnicity. Muhammad sought to build human solidarity based on his belief that there is only one god and that he, Muhammad, was the final messenger from god. Muhammad was to be the best example and model for all humans to emulate for all time.
    The greatest crime that anyone could commit, from Muhammad's point of view, was to either not worship god or to worship more than one god. This was an unforgivable sin or crime above all crimes. Muhammad stated that he "was sent to fight against people until they testify to the fact that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is his final messenger."
    After his death, his companions continued the fight to spread Islam dividing the world into those who are believers, followers of Muhammad, and those who were infidels. The 4 schools of Sunni Islam all agree that it is obligatory on Muslims to fight against all people so that the standard of Islam is established for all mankind. So Muhammad had a vision of uniting all of humanity on the basis of his beliefs. There was no separation between the state and religion in Islam. The purpose of the state was to extend the domain of Islam.

      He actually mentioned the first muslims, who were socially disrespected or weak. He’s not even talking on Muhammad’s tribe and origin. It’s this sense of gathering the weak and poor together to have given them shelter. Not what Muhammad’s tribe itself was. Indeed in his time, before claiming the prophethood, within his tribe, he was enjoying the image of being a clearly righteous personality. So as it’s mentioned by many scientists and historians, he was also engaging himself, as a judge, in issues or trials, within his tribe. But again. That time isn’t mentioned, he’s clearly talking on Muhammad’s first followers, accepting Islam. Who were the weak, slaves or mostly women.
