I spent more time scratching my head over the meager instructions that came with the name-brand replacement than I did watching your excellent video. Thank you for taking the time to share.
I want to tell you, I wish ALL videos were as concise and helpful as this!!! As a 52year old woman recent divorced who just bought a fixer upper to literally start over with, I will be using this video as well as any other one that you do that applies to my situation. Thank you!!! I might just survive this after all...lol
Awe kellie..youre the sweetest..Thank you so much for sharing this. God knows what he is doing. I appreciate the comment and i do have videos for just about everything under the roof and the roof too. I wish you all the best and anytime you have a question or need help..you let me know..thanks so much for watching.
You are the man!! My 13 yr old Larson touch pad needed replacing, so I bought the new handle, thinking it would be a quick fix. Wow, what a journey. As soon as I started dismantling the old one, I found wires and had to take the strike plate off and pull the unit out. The wires went to an attached piece on the bottom end of it. I was hoping I could use it manually, since I didn't need the power part. Looong to short, I tried to call Larson (but there is a huge internet problem and their site is down), researched the world over for how-to videos, read the negative reviews of the only replacement Amazon showed for $104 and finally realized that the new handle post is pentagon shaped and the hole in the old unit is square. I apparently have to try to put this one back together until I can get one from Larson, but your video was like a breath of air. Thank you for doing it.
An Allen key! Ha! Who knew! I was about to take a freaking hammer to my door handle.. I don't think my glass storm door would have liked the hammer *snickers* Thank you sooooo much for making these videos!! You made that damn allen key look so easy.. I had to use pliers to turn the allen key. Thank YOU!!! :)
Thank you! I was trying to figure out how to take mine apart and it was stuck. I was looking at it from the edge of the door, so it wasn't until you said "allen key" that I finally looked on the other side of the handle. Thanks again!
thanks a lot. Just replaced mine and it worked great except the springy thing that goes towards the door was facing the other way. I called the company and they said I could just remove a few screws and turn it to face the door. you might want to add that. Other than that I appreciate this video. Made the process so easy!
I wish you could possibly show in more detail the steps your taking, a visual of the steps for alot of your videos would be really helpful for someone like me to be able to pause and see if my work is looking like yours, ect. Thanks for all your helpful stuff so far.
...And I'm going to disagree - There enough info in his video to replace the mechanism and once you start, it'll be obvious. A little challenge is a good thing.
Great video - I have the exact lockset you removed - a Larson DFA, which is no longer made. Which new mortise lock brand did you use to replace it - a found a Wright brand Serenade mortise lockset that looks almost identical.
@@homemend great video ! I'm replacing my lock today what I found was it wasn't no mortise included aren't they always required when replacing these kinda of handles ?
Is replacing the cylinder on storm doors pretty easy to do? The hardware works fine but i never originally had the key. Anderson recommended me the proper cylinder for my EMCO storm door.
Hi miguel! If its a mortise style, i don't think so.. Not sure how much room you need but you may be able to re hang the door high or low depending on whats needed.
I'm having trouble with the Allen key part. I've tried different sizes. One won't fit into the hole and the next size down doesn't seem to connect to anything because it's too small. I'm thinking something is missing in my handles. Any ideas?
Hey Daniel, great question. I’ve ran into something like this before as you may be dealing with a metric measurement and a standard tool or vice versa. If your Allen screw was missing, then your handle would come off. I hope this helps.
hey stevie. generally as long as you get the correct style...(mortise or surface mount lock) it will work..the biggest concern would be hole spacing but i havent had a problem with that before...you got this man!
hi cassandra!..we've always called them side cutters but the name i saw at the depot yesterday is diagonal pliers? they are awesome! i hope this helps..
@@homemend hey I'm having trouble removing the lock on my Pella not sure if it's the kind u replaced but I got everything off except that it's been a all day struggle afraid I'd ruin something more if I kept yanking at it do u have a suggestion?
I'm working with an older Larson Storm Door (1990's vintage) Can you tell me the make & model number of that replacement lock set you used as my told my original equipment lock set is no longer available :(
Hey Simon… Great question. I’ve seen different styles. Most common is a small flathead set screw in the mortise section. The Allen is to get the handle off only. I hope this helps.
Is there anywhere you can buy replacement plastic gaskets that go around the door handles? Can't find anything online, unless they go by a different name.
I followed your instructions. I removed the screws in the front piece, the lock, and the latches, but my front piece will not fall off as per your video. It appears to be attached to the inside piece.
Hey Dave sometimes parts get seized up and rusted together. There may be a set screw in the side of the door set way back attaching it otherwise I would Pry until it pops off of there
My Pella door is an older assembly that has a different locking action. I cannot find a replacement like it. Can I convert the above to work with my door? My locking has a mechanism above and below the clicker.....
hi dujuana, it looks like you will njeed yours special ordered. If you know the model of pella, you may be able to take that or a photo of the latch to the home depot and have them order it.. hope this helps..
Hey Teresa you can try to take the lock apart and open it manually or if you can’t get the door open at all you can take the storm door off from the outside if nothing else works. I hope this helps
hey jane...usually on the inside handle there is a "set" screw..on the side , an allen screw than tightens down and secures the handle to the post. i hope this helps!
The slam side is the side that is locked into the frame. How do you get that side off when it is locked in? Or what am I missing on this explanation? Thanks for your help,, Phil
HELP ! I cannot get the actual key lock to rain with the rest of the parts. It is stuck in the mortise plate. I cannot pull it in (inside where the turn knob is) nor push it out (where the key goes)
Hey mama check for a setscrew or an Allen screw, if that doesn’t work try to lock it and remove it, sometimes different handles are set up weird tried every possible combination you can think of to get that out of there LOL
Now I'm going to blah blah what the hex saw you talking about Willis? I am so incompetent as a man I don't even know how to do this. Good video though. I need to subcribe to a channel for sorry dummies if I can find one.
Not clear how you knew at what notch to clip off the post. "I'm gonna need to clip mine off... I'm going to use the second one." How did you determine that? This is the part I need to know. The instructions on the back of the package aren't clear either.
Hi leigh! no problem..just assemble the handle on the door a leave about a 1/4 inch protruding so the latch can fit on and engage the lock set..you got this!
Pardon my frustration but this video seems to assume knowledge. I've never replaced any handle of any kind. I don't know what all I need to make sure I have the right parts when I get home with my new handle. So, I guess I'll just keep struggling with the old handle.
Hey solar. I know it can be frustrating… Take a picture and head to the store. I really need to see if it has a mortise in the door or not. You got this. I hope this helps.

Hey Jack. Some styles come with the plate detached.

hi aaron... yes its pretty easy.. it appears i unknowingly covered it in this video...i hope this helps.. you can do it!
Thanks man! I now have the confidence to replace this!
thanks for commenting!
What tool did you use to snip the excess metal piece?
Great question Tracy I like to use my Lyman pliers. You can also use a pair of snips.
I have a question mine is hitting the new door lock (key code) is it possible to go lower I have the same lock on my storm door
Hi miguel! If its a mortise style, i don't think so.. Not sure how much room you need but you may be able to re hang the door high or low depending on whats needed.

When buying one of these slim line lock sets, are they all the same length or do I have to measure before purchasing
hey stevie. generally as long as you get the correct style...(mortise or surface mount lock) it will work..the biggest concern would be hole spacing but i havent had a problem with that before...you got this man!
How about making one with the Storm Door Stuck Closed? A Lot more Difficult !
I got it on the list Michael. Thanks for sharing
