    Good job. You can also duplicate the image plane and put it on the ground with a black shader for the shadow.

      @@AldenPeters1 thanks for this wonderful tutorial…pls I need help…my green screen footage I keyed out in after effect and imported into blender(PNG);the shadow is not updating while the actor is moving,the shadow is just static…but it plays very fine in cycles…and I don’t want to use cycles to render but eveee because of the shorter time.I have adjusted all the shadow settings still not working…STRANGE

    Next time, you can try to desaturate the shot and just do rough roto for the shadow,the apply a multiply mode and reduce the opacity till you're satisfied. Also I guess you missed on applying the spill killer on the real shadows. But anyways, I really appreciate the time and effort you've taken to do this.

    Oh gosh:::: I wish I came across this video before. I'm working on a video with keyed footages. I made duplications of the image planes enabling them in the camera and keeping the shadows and glossy reflections only in order to place those shadows wherever I want. I then made meshes of feet and placed them between the planes and duplicated ones to project only their shadows and animated them. Not the quickest solution, but worked. I would have done that at compositing time if I saw your video before !!!! But thanks for sharing your work. Really helpful !!!

    This is really good. This question has been bothering me. Is there a better way to generate real-time shadows, and why isn't there a more automated way to handle front and back foot shadows

    how to make shadows for green screen in Blender? Do it in AfterEffects!

  • @gatis.pastars

    Finally someone explained this and showed the process! Very helpful! I`ve been searching for solution to this problem as I was struggling with it in my projects!
    Could you also please explain in a video how do you manage edges after keying? I have a problem with grey edges once I import them in Blender - still cannot figure out how to approach it.

    • @AldenPeters1
      @AldenPeters1  Рік тому

      Definitely! Are the gray edges only visible in Blender or do they show up if you throw something behind them in another software too?

    • @gatis.pastars
      @gatis.pastars Рік тому

      @@AldenPeters1 I do keying in After Effects by using Red Giant primatte keyer, and I make sure that edges are nice, little bit with blur, matte shrink etc. So my edges after keying are semi-transparent (or like feathered) a few pixels - no grey edges. I make my render with alpha straight. Then I import it in Blender and these few pixels on edge arrange grey line - it`s tinny, but still it`s noticeable and doesn`t blend well with the background. I`ve tried different blending modes in Blender, but I don`t see any difference or improvement by switching between them. So I`ve been experimenting with compositing in Blender (by using render layers) and also importing renders from Blender into After Effects, but I`m not satisfied with the result.

    • @gatis.pastars
      @gatis.pastars Рік тому

      @RealTimeX I am using alpha straight, besides when I render keyed file in AF, it`s set on straight by default without possibility to change it. Maybe there is some other tick/menu that am not aware of?

    I had a little trouble following part 2 and 3 but I'm a big fan and patron of Ian's and have watched that video several times and I think you explained it better. I'd encourage you to do a bit more in depth tutorial of technique 2 and 3, maybe with a simple demo scene rather than your production example as that was a bit overwhelming. Thanks for doing this.

    • @AldenPeters1
      @AldenPeters1  Рік тому

      Thanks for the feedback! Would it be more helpful to walk through it in real time instead of showcasing the end result?

    • @seanposkea
      @seanposkea Рік тому

      @@AldenPeters1 Wow that was fast!. Yeah, I think its just because your production example, while very cool, is a bit overwhelming at least for me as a n00b. I'd really love to see parts 2 and 3 explained with a simpler project. I think I understand, but because you're showing it after the fact its hard to follow. Unlike your Ian technique at the beginning or your F-spy video which were very clear. So I don't know if you need to do it in real time but a bit more step by step would be very interesting. Thanks for taking my comment so seriously. As an unmonetized tutorial creator with a small following I'm a sucker for good videos with a low view count, but I agree with JJ Hooks comment that I don't think your channel is going to stay that way for long.

    • @AldenPeters1
      @AldenPeters1  Рік тому

    Would making a super low poly version of the actors and matching their movements to get shadows work then setting them to not render?

    • @Culpride
      @Culpride Рік тому +1

      This method is more work intensive but useful if you have a 3D enviroment with textures and reflections

    • @AldenPeters1
      @AldenPeters1  Рік тому

      I've done this for a shot where I used a simple mesh to help cast a shadow on the wall, but it was all off camera and pretty soft shadows (also I should have added this to this video!) but for more precise movements like full body walking, that would be pretty labor intensive as Philonius mentioned
