Henry V is a serious contender for the most impressive man ever to rule England. On his death, a chronicler wrote: "He did not leave his like upon earth among Christian kings or princes." His only fault was to die young… well, that, and being so horrifically ruthless and cold, that another historian wrote of Henry that he was "conclusive proof that a man may be a hero and yet a monster."

Coup d'chat.
Great video, but yall missed the two most important parts in the battle of Agincourt. First, Henry wasn't on horseback, far from it. He was actually in the center of the line, on foot, with a crown welded to his helmet so that everyone could see him (and likely target the strongest point in the center of the English line). Second, during the battle, the Duke of Gloucester, the king's own brother, was severely wounded by French knights and was being taken off the field by them. In the most heroic act of the battle, the king, who had been saved by a royal body guard, charged out and stood on the body of his brother, killing the knights and making it clear that no royal of England was going to be taken hostage.
Great video, but again, these two points are really what made the battle legendary!
Stay awesome guys!

@@safehavenonice6431 Actually, The Average EU4 player (or CK2 if you prefer) Is Much Less Honorable And Will Stab You In The Back The Moment They Smell A Glimmer Of Weakness.
That's where this series kinda stinks, there is not ennought context for the french actions. The duke of burgundy, kinda assassinated the king brother, and wanted to claim the throne for himself, as he was already fighting the valois for the control of paris. The rendez vous at that bridge was for negociating a truce.

Part of this strike was also a few archers hidden in two forests near the French positions. They didn’t do much physical damage, but they did shout out calls like they were hunting hogs.
This offended the French noble knights who did not want to be seen as mere hogs…
…so they charged into the mud of Agincourt and got farmed like hogs.
Henry V, the perfect example of Die a hero or living long enough to be the villain.
He was a hero to the english, and a villain to the french. But given his choices at agincourt i can understand that he had the prisoners killed. A french cavalery unit was preparing to attack his back and he gave the order to kill the (non nobility) prisoners to break their moral because their attack could have ended his campaign, army, and life if successfull.
How was he a villain
Danny Johnston did you watch the video? He “went off with his head” anyone who was deemed a heretic. Also the guy above you explains it well
@@puncturedbicycle7264 Not depicted in the video, but he refused passage to the women and children of Rouen who were expelled by the cities defenders presuming Henry would not be so cruel as to deny them passage through the lines. Henry refused to let them leave and they ended up dying of starvation in the ditches surrounding the city. This was not the only incident either. To put it in perspective, Richard III allegedly murdered two boys to secure his throne and is viewed by Lancastrians as a tyrant. Henry V paved the road to the conquest of France on the bones of several hundred if not thousands of French children and yet is hailed as the greatest English King of all time.
Henry was willing to punish his own soldiers very harshly (execution if memory serves) if they desecrated or robbed churches. I guess you could say he was ruthless, but protecting the local clergy was a decent thing to do.

That's... not why he killed the prisoners.
There were reports of another force approaching from behind and he ordered the prisoners killed because he feared they take the opportunity to rejoin the fight. He rescinded the order as soon as he learned that the other force wasn't hostile (I think it was one of his own captains returning from something).

@@hiddentreasure2161 *Joan d'arc never won a battle against england.*
She won the Battle of Jargeau, the Battle of Meung-sur-Loire, and the sieges of Troyes and Orléans. A part of her army (so not her) also won the Battle of Patay.
*What stopped england was french cannons.*
The English had cannons too. Cannons certainly played a role, but the realy reason the French won the war :
1.Charles VII did away with the traditional feudal army and set up a permanent professional army funded by taxes.
2.Artillery massively sped up siege warfare.
3.Inspired by the streak of French victories, Jeanne d'Arc and special interests, several French cities either revolted against the English or simply opened their door to Charles VII.
4.The incredibly successful Orléans campaign under the inspiration of Jeanne d'Arc.
So yeah, Jeanne's role and importance is often overblown, but she was still important. And the English being defeated by cannons is just a myth, there were only 2 cannons at Formigny, and the English quickly took them out of the equation by charging them. The French were then in a tough spot. What decided the battle was the arrival of the breton cavalry.
Castillon is the only battle that was won by french artillery, and even then you can make a very good argument that the battle was actually lost because of English incompetence : Talbot didn't wait for all of his army (including his cannons) and did a frontal charge on a defensive position (with remparts) set up behind a trench.
But did the Dauphine deserve her faith?

I hope that at least it shows that france wasn't just incompetent...

@@A_annoying_rodent Well, about the germans... Who won the first world war already ? :P just sayin' xD
@@jacobguillerey4476 To be fair, so far we've seen the French be competent in some ways, like unifying against threats, and organizing large armies, but also pulling some risky moves others would call insane. Like killing the ruler of Burgundy. Or fighting in the rain and mud.
It's no wonder people make fun of the French, saying "the only times France wins is when they aren't led by French men." After all, Joan of Arc and Napoleon are not French men. They are a woman and Corsican, respectively, and their military campaigns are the most well known victories historians speak of in regards to France.
@@Darkgun231 It is true that for now it's been accurate.
But just something to counter your argument about napoleon : He may be a corsican, but most importantly he was a French citizen, saying he isn't french would be at the limit of racism and most definitly discriminatory.
And i have many counter argument to what you advence. The maréchal Pétain, charles martel, and francis the first.

Fun fact(s): John the fearless had a father called Philipp the bold. And a grandson called Charles... the bold again. Sadly Charles the bold only had a daughter, so the badass gene that seemed to be on that families Y chromosome was unfortunately lost.
And it wasn't the only awesome part about that Y chromosome. John(the fearless)'s son and Grandfather were were Phillip the good and John the good (who was King of France a few episodes back)respectively.
Either Burgundy was filled with a bunch of unimaginative yes-men, or that was one badass family.

I don't understand why, but "butter-clenching stupidity" just made me laugh for a straight minute.
I would absolutely love if you guys would start putting sources in your description box so we can read further on the topic. Just saying “I the words of a famous historian” doesn’t give much. Who is he? Who is she? What book was it in? Is it from a journal? Even “in the words of famous historian Jane Doe” would be a good step, even if most wouldn’t know who they are. I appreciate you’re stressed for time and probably don’t have the funding you realistically need, but a small step like that will really make these videos a great jumping off point to learn about these topics, and possibly lend even more academic credibility to the series (though no one is arguing they’re poorly researched). I’ve been watching these since the Punic Wars and have loved each and every episode, but those sources would be the cherry on top of a perfect cake.
