I'm so glad you like them and you are very welcome! I am actually working on two sets of these potholders this afternoon. Thank you so much for watching and commenting! Happy sewing!
Glad it was helpful! Potholders are exactly what I started with back when I started sewing quilts. If you think about it, a potholder is just a miniature quilt, so it gives us a way to practice on a small item before moving onto a larger item. Either way, welcome to my channel and thank you for subscribing! I hope you have a wonderful weekend and happy sewing!
Loved your tutorial! I have 3 bags of quilting scraps and was looking for smaller things to make for next Christmas. I’ve been having so much fun making scrap pot holders but I needed a good video on making the loop for the binding. Yours was perfect! Thank you so much❤

Potholders are a very fun project and I find that they make a great gift because who can’t use a new pot holder set? Thank you so much for watching and taking the time to comment. I like the idea of scrappy binding. I will make the hangers your way next time. It looks much better than the way I have been making mine. Thank you for sharing.
Hi Charlotte! You’re ever so welcome! I can’t even remember where I first saw that binding method, but I do know it changed how I do things, because I love the way it looks. I’ve used scrappy bindings on quite a few different projects, like potholders and things like that. I think it makes for a very colorful edging. Thank you so much for watching and taking the time to comment. Happy Easter!

Love her! So easy to follow. My reason for watching her is I have a specific pot handler pot holder patter which is oval and I cut the batting to size. However when quilting, it moves and leaves the p of holder distorted. I now know to cut the batting larger! Who knew? Thank you for a great tutorial!

Lovely! I've made some folded star potholders and I needed to brush up on binding with a loop and I'm so happy I found you because you have a wider binding width and I struggled to make the binding with a 2.25 inch width. My next folded star potholder will look much nicer using your method. New subscriber! Thank you!

Just keep trying, I’m sure you’re doing great! Potholders are just simply a mini quilt in my book and can be made in so many different ways. This was actually one of the first videos that I put on UA-cam, I was still very new to it. I have the set of potholders in my kitchen, as I finally kept some for myself. Thank you so much for showing me how to do the corners on your hot pad with the self-binding method. I am making mini quilts for the Cat Cages for my local animal shelter.. Unfortunately, I just finished 2 of them yesterday and my corners were terrible. I am making many more and will use your technique. Many Thanks.

I’m glad I was able to pass them along and have them work for you and others. That’s such a nice thing that you do. I’m sure the animals don’t mind, even if your binding technique wasn’t 100%. straight. They can feel the love that you put into them. Thank you for what you do!

Hi Kerry! Yes, that was one of the first videos. Not like I’m an old hand because I haven’t even been at the three months, but I think you know what I mean, ha ha. Thanks so much for your comments!
@@MariesScrappyCreations thanks for making these videos Marie, you are encouraging me to give it a go on projects I put in the 'too hard basket'. I am going to drag out a quilt I have started but put in a box and left for years now. I have an idea on how to secure it so I can work on it ( a queen sized quilt ) and then I will do the binding like you did here. I am going to need lots more buttons 😂
I'm just learning to sew & quilt to improve my eye/hand coordination and fine motor skills after a small stroke. I think the green would make a lovely binding for your pot holder.
Hi Carol! Well, that is a great thing to do to improve your eye and hand coordination. I’m sorry to hear about your stroke, but it sounds like you have a “can-do” attitude and that’s all you need. Thank you so much for watching and for leaving a comment for me. Have a wonderful week!
I'm glad you found me, too! Welcome to my little corner of UA-cam! This was actually one of my first videos. You'll have a lot of videos to catch up on , ha ha. Thank you so much for watching and taking the time to comment. I appreciate that. Happy sewing!
I'm doing a marathon of your videos now. Lol! Im a beginner. My sewing machine and I finally became friends. I'm not afraid of touching it any more. LOL!! I just made a disappearing 9 patch table runner. Now I'm a little sponge soaking up all of your knowledge and wisdom. Thank you so much for being here for people like me.
I do like sewing scraps together to make bindings. It seems to “pop” with the mixture of colors. I could watch you all day but I can’t stitch on machine and watch you at the same time. ❤
Oh, thank you Betty! You're so sweet! I love the scrappy borders best, too! I ended up using one fabric instead of scraps, but there's always next time, ha ha. Thanks so much for watching my videos!!! You made me laugh because you definitely can't do both - or at least I can't... not sew and pay attention, anyway. LOL. Take care and I'll "see" you next time! \
Hi MiKi! Me, too! I've challenged myself to make as much as I can this year with the scraps I have. That's the big reason I named my channel what I did, I just love scraps and I love seeing how beautifully they go together! Thanks for joining me and for the comment!
I just found and watched this. You said you were from northern Maine.😊 I’ve lived in central Maine most of my life, it’s nice to see another Maina here on UA-cam, I enjoyed your teaching and look forward to seeing more of your videos ❤️
Hello fellow Main-ah! Thank you for stopping by to introduce yourself! The video you commented on was actually one my first ones, and my lighting was still bad and I wasn't in my own sewing room, lol. Oh, well... anyway, I'm living in Aroostook county now, but I was born in Augusta. I look forward to seeing you again in the comments and feel free to drop by a livestream if your schedule permits (Wednesdays at 10 am)
Wow, it’s a small world for real. My grandmother’s were from Skowhegan and the other from No New Portland. I grew up in the southernmost part of Maine! My sister still lives up there. I’ve always wanted to go back…Thanks for the video
Hi Pat! I'm glad you found me! I am from Augusta, but have been up here in Aroostook county for over 30 years now. I'm so glad to have you as a new subscriber!
Hi Marie!! I think you should use a solid or a color on color so that it doesn’t look too busy. You have a lot of beautiful fabrics in the potholder and they should stand out! Thank you for sharing your projects!!!
Hi Lisa Marie! Thanks for the opinion (and the comment!), I appreciate it. Today, I finished the 2nd potholder, the one that went with the one I showed in this video. I actually put them into my potholder drawer and have an adorable set - finally! I'm not sure if you caught the part of the video the other day, but I have just been using very old, yucky potholders, yet I'm always making them for gifts or to sell. You'd think I'd have had a nice set. Well, I do now! ;-)
@@MariesScrappyCreations good for you! You deserve to have some nice pot holders in your drawer! I find sometimes I use the old ones because they are already dirty and I don’t want to get the nice clean ones dirty. Lol.
@@lisamarieesposito4842 Thanks and yes, I think I do deserve to have some nice ones. LOL, it's funny because I make all these nice potholders as gifts for others, or sell them and I keep the old ones for myself. But, now I have a set that matches with the hot pad from last week. I'm moving up in the world, lol lol!!!
Thank you! I had the raggedy old potholders in my kitchen and when I made these, my granddaughter told me that I absolutely had to use them. She was right and I started using them and every time I look at them, I think of how pretty they are! They also match the hot pad that I made. You may have seen that video, too.
Marie if it was me, i'd do the binding in the 4 colours of your fabric for the binding. Also, when you do the corners, could you do a closeup where you start off stitching, after you've flipped it, so it's nice & square please? I hope that you understood would I meant. It's @ the 27:41 mark. I'm hopeless @ binding the corners. Closed captions (cc) started working within 6 hours. I started watching the video when it came out, but I had to go out & cc wasn't available, but when I could watch it again, cc was on :D
Thanks, that's one vote for scrappy binding! As far as when I start off in the corner, I sent you a pm about that ;-) I'm glad the CC worked. I know from what I read, it said it takes anywhere from 12-24 hours. When I went to bed last night, the video was still uploading to UA-cam and when I woke this morning, it was available then. Last weeks video took all the 24 hours, but this one was definitely quicker!
As a “newbie” I’m very interested in how you pieced all of the different-sized scraps together. I’m a new subscriber so if you’ve already done a tutorial on piecing, I’m sure I haven’t found it yet. Any suggestions for me, please? I do enjoy the tutorials that I have seen!
Hello and welcome! Thanks for subscribing! I actually just put up a video that isn't so much a tutorial, but allows you to see how I piece my scraps. Here is the link and I hope you have some fun sewing your scraps! ua-cam.com/video/6SyQLy93CS8/v-deo.html
I'm new to sewing. What weight batting would you need? For example: 2 layers of mid weight cotton batting or should it be heavier weight? Thanks in advance.
Hi! Recently, I've been using 3 layers of cotton batting, instead of two. I've never dealt with weights of cotton batting, so I'm unsure how to answer. I know polyester batting gave different thicknesses and then there's wool, but any 100% cotton batting I've purchased has been basically the same. If you could tell me what brand or type you're trying, that might help. 🥰
Marie, you need some Clover clips. They work so well on holding binding and you don't stab yourself with the pins. My grandkids are learning to sew and the clips are so much easier for them. Thank you
Lol, You’re not the first to say that, Cynthia. I think I need to get used to them. My granddaughter bought me some clover clips 3 or 4 years ago and I’ve tried using them, but they kept catching on the sides of my sewing machine when I’d be sewing and they also felt like they were heavy or dragging the piece down. Maybe it’s just I’m too set in my ways, ha ha. I love to hear about sewing with kids! Sewing with grandchildren is so special!
My thoughts exactly. Clips are awesome. It has been two years, did you start using your clips? Thank you for your video! Yours is the best…. I am making folding star hot pads and have been struggling with binding….. I was adding the loop. I was going wrong with the width of my binding, it was not 2 3/4…. Hoping this will make my project better!
I’m more particle to using a solid that matches your block. Do you have clips i find they are easier than struggling with pins. Ive had to toss so mant pins out cause they bent
Hi Theresa and thank you for your comment and opinion on the potholder binding! Looks like so far, it's the solid fabric, rather than the scraps, with more votes. I think I said in the video that I'd read comments through Monday before going with the majority. I guess tonight, I'll take a look through and see how many at that point. I do have clover clips, but find them to be bulky to work with. I watched so many UA-camrs using them and my granddaughter bought me some a few Christmases ago as a gift. I do use them but only on large projects. It's probably just me, but I find that they feel heavy and when I lay the project across to sew, they feel like they've "weighted' it down and sometimes I've caught them on the edge of my machine. Maybe I just need more practice, lol! I was sewing this morning and sewed over pins, so I guess that goes against my "I don't sew over them anymore" rule, but I do when I'm working with zippers, as I need the zipper to stay exactly where i have it. I do go very slowly, so maybe that helps?
Hi! Well, to put them in the center would be a whole new tutorial. I’ll add that to my to do list, but there is no easy way to answer that. It’s similar, but not the same way, and would be too difficult to explain in the comment section. Thank you so much for watching and happy sewing!
Hi! Yes, I was using a walking foot. I had to look back over the video at the part where I was at the machine to know for sure, but then I could see the side of it (just barely). I'm sorry I didn't mention it when I should have, but I was still new to making videos at that point. This is one of my first few tutorials, ha ha. Thanks for your question and take care!
I didn't cut the scraps into any certain size. I just sewed together what scraps I had and then cut it into whatever size I wanted my pot lholder to be
You could hand stitching it, or cut your binding narrower than 2.75 (maybe a trial run using 2.25"?). If you get it just right, then on the opposite side it would look like you were stitching in the ditch of that seam.
Hi Miss Marie..love your videos!! You talked about closed captioning..I use earbuds so I can hear better, but still turn closed captioning on. I especially like closed captioning when someone adds a lot of music to their video. You can't always hear them above the music. Turn the volume down and still know what they say. Love that you don't do that.
I do the same... closed captioning and headset when watching videos on UA-cam (and regular tv)/ Yeah, I'm not a fan of music on the videos unless I make a "short" (under 1 minute) video. The music can overpower the tutorial and make it very difficult to understand.
You mentioned in this video about how dry your hands are. Maybe you can put some baby oil, not much in your location to help with the dryness. I worked with a lady that did that and it worked for her. Just a thought to pass on to you. I like your method of put your binding on potholders!
Thank you for your suggestion! I've actually tried anything and everything. The problem sometimes is if it's too greasy, I can't touch anything like fabric or yarn that I want to do, without getting it greasy. I end up having to wear gloves and then I can't feel anything. But I appreciate your thoughtfulness and looking out for me! 💞
@@MariesScrappyCreations i totally understand! Maybe just a few drops and only at night while it does it work....just a thought. My hands are always in water it seems when I'm not in my sewing room so mine are dry also. In the Winter it gets worse.
Bottom line....always do your best, most time it has flaws but if you take your time and care about your work the imperfections are easier to accept. 🇨🇦
Please don’t include me in your giveaway. But I’ll answer your question. 😉. I love a scrappy binding but sometimes on a smaller project that’s full of scrappy color I like a solid binding to frame It. I also like to use up my scraps in a scrappy binding so I’m of no help at all 🤣
I appreciate your answer... er, your opinion. ;-)b LOL! Robin, you are so funny! I hear you, though. If I used a solid, it keeps the "busy-ness" of the scraps to a minimum. If I use a scrap binding, it might be too much scrappiness, (is that a real thing... too much scrappiness?). It's a tough decision, for real!
I’m sorry but just being honest. People that do these video’s need to talk less or not at all. A tip. Do each step with directions on the screen below. Not everyone has the knack to teach on UA-cam. Just my opinion.
I love making scrappy potholders! I also love watching you make them too! The sound of a sewing machine is soothing to my brain after had surgery on it.

I am going to drag out a quilt I have started but put in a box and left for years now. I have an idea on how to secure it so I can work on it ( a queen sized quilt ) and then I will do the binding like you did here. I am going to need lots more buttons 😂
I love to read comments like this! Thank YOU!

Love those colors, I'm a Autumn Gal!🍂
Me too!!
In regards to binding color, I love just one matching color. It makes the potholder center pop! Kinda sets it off!
thanks!
I love insul bright!
Thank you! I enjoyed your video!❤
I'm glad you enjoyed it! Thank you for letting me know! 🪡🧵✂️
Thank you very much for telling me how to sew clearly
❤
You are very welcome! This was actually one of my very first videos after starting my UA-cam channel. I love making potholders!
Have a wonderful week!
like your hot pad's withe the binding from back to frount.
Thank you! I use a few different methods, depending on my mood, ha ha. Thank you so much for watching, and I appreciate your comment. Happy sewing!
I'm so glad I found you!!😊
I'm glad you found me, too!
Enjoyed your video. Thank you
I'm glad you enjoyed it! You're welcome, and thank you for watching and commenting!

Love ❤️ ❤️ ❤️ scrappy!
Hi MiKi!
I think one colour binding would look best. The loop construction was quite unique and new to me..great tutorial
Thank you! 😊
Love it! I need to try doing this but it will have to be hand sewn.
It will just make it that much more special. I used to sew everything by hand, too.
I think scrubs would look good on your binding
Scraps would look awesome
Thanks ❤️
Contrasting solid print would look great on the other potholders.
Hi Peggy! Thanks for the visit and for the input. Have a great weekend!
I just found you and have subscribed. I live in Maine too but on the coast near Rockland. It’s great finding you.
❤I love them!!🧵🪡
Thank you! I had the raggedy old potholders in my kitchen and when I made these, my granddaughter told me that I absolutely had to use them. She was right and I started using them and every time I look at them, I think of how pretty they are! They also match the hot pad that I made. You may have seen that video, too.
Well I think the scraps of the 4 colors would be cute.
That's exactly what I chose, scrappy 😄
Use solid binding and make color bold.grateful for your videos
My pleasure 😊. Thank YOU!
I would use one fabric for the potholder's binding...
That was the majority, so it's what I went with. :-) Thank you for your comment and opinion on the potholder!
As far as when I start off in the corner, I sent you a pm about that ;-)
I'm glad the CC worked. I know from what I read, it said it takes anywhere from 12-24 hours. When I went to bed last night, the video was still uploading to UA-cam and when I woke this morning, it was available then. Last weeks video took all the 24 hours, but this one was definitely quicker!
A scrap binding will be pretty
Thanks! 🥰
Très belle explication, je reviendrai vous voir ; merci de partager. Je suis de France Pays de Loire.
Hello and I’m so happy you wrote to me! Thank you so much and have a very happy new year!

Thanks so much!!!❤️
I'm new to sewing.
Thank you so much
You're so very welcome. Congratulations on being chosen the winner!
use scraps how do I put the hanging loop in the middle I like mine even
Hi! Well, to put them in the center would be a whole new tutorial. I’ll add that to my to do list, but there is no easy way to answer that. It’s similar, but not the same way, and would be too difficult to explain in the comment section. Thank you so much for watching and happy sewing!
Were you using your walking foot when you did the quilting?
Will you tell me correct measurements for cloth joinging it
I didn't cut the scraps into any certain size. I just sewed together what scraps I had and then cut it into whatever size I wanted my pot lholder to be
Ok dear
❤❤
Make a scrappy binding on the other pot holders
That's exactly what I chose!
Scraps for binding.
How many inches is your binding strips
2.75" was what I used in the video. I made a set the other day and used 2.5" and it worked out even better.
How do I keep the stitching from showing on the other side when binding?
You could hand stitching it, or cut your binding narrower than 2.75 (maybe a trial run using 2.25"?). If you get it just right, then on the opposite side it would look like you were stitching in the ditch of that seam.
What is you Stitch length? Mine is 2.5 and wasn’t sure if I should have a shorter length.
I could try at night 🥰
Try putting your pins in vertically then the direction will not matter.
Thanks ❤️
Use a scrapy binding.
Thanks!! Happy sewing!
Where in Maine are you?
In Aroostook County. :-)

I also don't like insulbrite. Some people think that its necessary. The manufacturer states it is not necessary.
Yeah, I've never cared for it. The sound of insulbrite drives me crazy, lol! Now I use 3 layers of cotton batting, all quilted down nicely.
Please use one fabric
One color
Green...mix would be interesting also. UA-cam waynesville NC USA 🇺🇸 veteran

Bottom line....always do your best, most time it has flaws but if you take your time and care about your work the imperfections are easier to accept. 🇨🇦
Well said!!!!! 💕🥰
Never too much scrappiness.
@@rsislandcrafts I didn't think there could be such a thing, ha ha

I’m sorry but just being honest. People that do these video’s need to talk less or not at all. A tip. Do each step with directions on the screen below. Not everyone has the knack to teach on UA-cam. Just my opinion.
