Best is subjective but I like a barrel nut that has to be timed, then the handguard has screws that screw INTO the barrel nut and then the handguard has anti rotation tabs. I dont trust compression fit handguards. I had one that would move forward 1/4 inch under recoil. It never came off but I won'tt trust them ever again.
With all the precision tools around the shop my boy uses an adjustable wrench for the muzzle device 😅.

Criterion says do a gap between hand guard rail and upper receiver just a small gap. Is this correct?
I'll have to go checkout their instructions specifically. In most cases, probably 80%-90% handguard/upper manufacturers, they are not only touching, but also include anti-rotation tabs to keep everything locked in. But I'll definitely check out Criterion.
Buy a Troy or other quality brand that anchors securely with a standard barrel nut. There is some real junk out there these days that were designed by high school dropouts and loosen up in the field.
