    Dennis,
    Thanks again for posting such a clear and informative fishing reel breakdown, cleaning and servicing video. I fish whenever I can and having reliable equipment is key to a good trip. I was brought up to take care of the tackle that takes care of you. Your videos definitely help whenever I have a question about a new to me reel. Appreciate you.

    A lot of people trash the Chinese-made Penn's but the reels you serviced on the channel all seem very well constructed. I agree with Christopher, its painful to see how salted those charter boat reels can be.

      It is not a question of whose hands put the reel together, the foreign assembly of the reels is not to blame. It is when the designers and the brands make decisions to use inferior materials or short cut more expensive parts to "save" pennies on the reel. Penn has done a good job for the most part in maintaining quality on many of there reels, although there have been some terrible releases as well. That could happen anywhere . Thanks for the note - Dennis

    Thank you Dennis so much for the very informative video! ☺️ I have both Penn battle 3 and Slammer 3. I can also say that the quality of battle 3 is the same as on Slammer 3, if not better (except the system of seals in Slammer 3). The feel of the reeling on battle 3 is in the class of Shimano or Daiwa. I service both reels regularly of my self, and have never had problems with them 😎👍

      How is the Spinnfisher VI compared to those two? I have the 4500 for about a year I only get down to fish about 10 times a season, but I try to take good care of all my saltwater gear. Making sure to clean and rinse them down after each use. Currently have a Baitrunner OC the cheaper of the Shimano Baitrunners that I’ve had for about 7-8 seasons now and it still runs great. Also, have a Tsunami 6000 that I don’t love it’s smoothness if that’s a word? But I guess all the seals are what makes that a little rougher, it’s also on the heavier side.
      I’ve had the Spinnfisher VI for a year and I’ve used to surf and near shore fishing so far. I’m hoping that I’ll get as much use from this as I have my Baitrunner. Going to try doing some vertical jigging in Hatteras this summer out on the full day trip on the Miss Hatteras.

    I must reluctantly admit this is a strong design for a spinning reel and the parts appear solid. I cringe at the salt buildup on this reels though. I like the all metal case too. I just don’t like the always on AR on modern reels. It’s because of the way I like to fish. This is one of the better modern Penn reels I’ve seen. Still, I wouldn’t buy one. Hi Dennis, I use a Penn battle III for surf fishing and I got washed on a jetty, the reel went through the wash with me. It developed a squeak. I took it apart to service and I believe I over greased after watching your video on how much grease is too much. My next fishing trip it was stiff and as I fished it, it got harder and harder to crank until I felt uncomfortable to continue, fearing I would break it. I am going to open it up again now that I've watch your videos and hope I didn't damage anything. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and I will let you know how my second attempt works out.

      Sounds like the inside of the pinion gear is gummed up or that you have a bent axle shaft. I would start there with a cleaning and test of those two pieces - After you remove the axle shaft screw, oil up on the axle and make sure is is gliding easily through the pinion gear. If it sticks clean both and try again. If it still sticks, the shaft likely got bent fighting a fish or hitting something when you fell in - Dennis

    Thanks Dennis, great video. Can you explain where the shims go and how many there should be?

    • @2ndChanceTackle
      @2ndChanceTackle  Рік тому

      The shims go on the main gear outside and under the side case bearing. They are used to take up the side to side play in the main gear movement. The factory will typically install 1 or 2 to make up for the variance in manufacturing tolerances of the side plates and main housing. If you replace the main gear, you need to recheck the shims. if the gear is binding, remove one. It is loose - side to side, add one - Dennis

      @@2ndChanceTackle Thanks so much Sir! So if I have this correct, put a shim between the main gear and bearing (side where my handle is) but what is the side case bearing? Are you saying put a shim/shims on either side of that same bearing?
      I put all 4 shims between the main gear and bearing and the reel binded. I didn’t add any new shims, so they were in there somewhere already and I reinstalled them incorrectly.
      Called Penn and was told to put them where the thrust washer goes per their schematic, but that just seems odd to me.

    Hi Dennis, thank you for sharing your time and talent! How do you define penetrating oil, wd 40 or the like? Would any residue of the same need to be removed prior to application of reel oil and grease? Thanks in advance! I just disassembled my reel after it fell in the surf/sand after a hookup and when rotating the handle elicits resistance and the sound of drag???

    • @2ndChanceTackle
      @2ndChanceTackle  Рік тому +1

      Penetrating oil like WD40 is petroleum based, so you do not need to mop up everything before you re-oil or lube, but I like to get as much out as possible as it may dilute the new greases. Any time a reel goes in the water or sand, it get's contaminated. Your issue is probably where the handle and main gear meet. Maybe the bearings, maybe a shim. Also, did you remove the rotor? There may be sane and junk under it.
      Thanks

    Reel manufacturers add slots in the spool to save weight and sell reels, but I wish they would leave the spools solid. Those holes just allow dirt, sand, and debris into the reel.

      @2ndChanceTackle  2 роки тому

      Sounds like something is binding in the reel. I'm afraid you need to take it apart yet again.
      The tightness may be coming from a lack of shim washer or too many shim washers or a shim in the wrong place on the main gear. It can also be from a misinstalled pinion gear assembly including the washers under the rotor and or bearings. Also check to make sure that the axle shaft is not bent.
