A few things I really like about this video:
1/ Oris had the balls to let you say what you actually thought about the piece. #RESPECT
2/ You actually said what you thought about the piece (in a way that was hard on the issues, soft on the people).
3/ You included a very useful lesson regarding the economics of limited editions. (Those things had never occurred to me. I totally get it. Now I know.)
Thanks to you, and thanks to Oris. I’m actually MORE inclined - not less - to buy an Oris watch in the future.

Harry Joiner thank for watching Harry. I’m going to go into detail in another video around my relationship with Oris. Rolf, the CEO of Oris, doesn’t care what bloggers or press say about their watches. They are proud if what they do and doesn’t need validation from anyone. They are far more confident than the large majority of brands.

I actually really like the patina and would want to see how it changes over time. The fact that different parts are ageing differently is how it's supposed to go. Way better than fake lume and the like. Wouldn't be my one and only watch, but would be a lot of fun to take a chance on this.

THANK YOU for doing this video. It is so hard to find decent photos, let alone press, of bronze cases after some patina. This has always put me off of them. It's a weird material where you're trying to picture what it's going to look like instead of taking it at face value like steel.

My Oris Big Crown was my first decent watch in the early 1990s and, although I've not worn it for over a decade, every time I see it, it brings a smile to my face - it still looks really good with its blue face and strap. Thanks for the NATO strap which I received last weeks - looks good on my Seamaster. Keep up the good work!

Surface finish differences is why its aging differently..
    Brushed = oxidizes faster (case)

@@pMattpful bronze is reactive and the tighter you can make the surface graining such as say polishing = harder for it to oxidize because nothing can get in to the tight surface structure. While brushing is open and slightly pouros..

Having owned a bronze CW C60 Trident for about two years, I've found that the patina varies greatly depending on where you live and other factors. When it was new, I wore it swimming in a pool to force a patina and was very unhappy with the dull finish that resulted. I researched and found a great many ways to force a patina, but none of them appealed to me. So I decided to keep it polished for the time being. Lo and behold, after a few months it got a beautiful patina just naturally. It is much mush better looking than the one you got and even the various forced patinas I saw in my research. That said, I live in Denver, CO, and the climate is very different here than most other places. I suggest before any bronze watch owner gives up, experiment. There is probably a way to get a patina that you love, as have I.

Still wearing a Broze Mako “batman” from Zelos. The patina never got beyond a middle brown. I live in Dallas so it doesn’t see salt water air or anything crazy to give it color. I ended up using a craft store bronze brown to make it look like an old statue. Lit it much better that way. The exterior looks like Ancient Rome, Under the sapphire looks shinny and new. I love the contrast.

My wife has the 36mm bronze with green dial. The bronze hasn't aged too much yet but that green dial with the bronze is just brilliant. Both get a lot of comments.

I've owned the Oris Carl Brashear Bronze for a couple of years and I understand what you mean about preferring the bronze case in it's 'new' more shiny state. I swim in the sea with mine and actually enjoy the change to a darker, patchy bronze. Mine has never turned green like a bronze Panerai would.
Whenever I get bored with the patina I make a fine paste with baking soda and water and brush gently with a VERY soft toothbrush. It never gets back to brand new condition, but takes on an amazing golden hue.
Thanks for yet another great video. The location is sublime!

Lovely landscapes. Great photography, lighting, sound. Entire production of your channel is very professional. Given the video a 👍 even though I was preparing to be annoyed from the outset due to number of negative comments the watch has been generating on social media. Can't argue with your opinions given that they are just that, opinions. I'm at exactly the same point in the patina journey as you right now. For me, the appeal of the watch is the changing nature of that case. Yes, I too preferred the watch when brand new, but I'm also loving not worrying about the condition of the case as time goes by and seeing something different in the case every week as it evolves. If the patina begins to annoy me, I'll just restore to original condition. Bronze cleaning is an easy diy job. Each to their own, but regardless of where this piece ranks in my collection, it's the most interactive experience I've had with a watch in ages. For me, that makes it worth the money, time and effort.

Yes, bright and shiny with that gold look in the beginning. Over time they patinaed very nicely, each one takes on its own look. Making it different from someone else's bronzed case. Good to hear about your experience, I have the green dialed limited edition version. What I have found is that once it gets enough patina only the parts that get rubbed a lot stay somewhat shiny.
It reminds me of bronze saddle fixtures and I enjoy it for that, I do believe that the green dial works better with the colour patina that develops.

I’ve got the bronze case green dial. After about 10 months, patina looks very similar, so it may not advance much further. Normal wear will always rub parts of the case/bezel making them shinier. But, if bronze isn’t for you, ORIS has lots of other stuff.

I like the darkening of the patina. I don’t have much expertise with bronze watch cases, but I do know that bronze boat fixtures can either be cleaned or left with the protective patina. I think bronze works for very specific watch designs... the roped bezel compliments the bronze case, along with the brown dial. This is a great example of a bronze style watch as it speaks to the era, where other brands have used bronze but for a variation of one of their stainless cases. Hope I made sense... was late when writing this.

    Lemon Juice for patina removal.
I own bronze diver 65 and I can say that patina looks better once it matures to an even dark tone, yours is going through a patchy phase where it’s not uniform. It does get better. Also I notice that parts that come into more contact with skin patina faster which may explain why your bezel is still shiny.

I bought the stainless steel version with a blue dial as a daily wear to mix with my other watches. The first thing to say is it's all good. Feels good, light and comfy and of course it keeps good time. The serious note to make is these are not holding any value so you could get one like I did for less than half price, second hand, with only a few months wear on it. It's a good watch and I'm very pleased so far. I do like the bronze version but in my local dealer they only had a couple which sold very quickly. I also swapped the strap for a Watch Gecko Winchester brown leather, which is very soft and supple and at just £20 is a bargain.

Funny how different the tastes are especially when it comes to bronze cases. I like the patina so much that i actually force it.
The issues is, that most of the bronze watches are designed (dial, hand, case back) to look good in the shiny new state without considering any patina. That’s understandable because that’s the condition the manufacturer has to sell it. For me the biggest upside of a bronze watch is that I get an uneven and therefor unique patina. Than it becomes your personal watch.

I just watched a video from 2018 about the big crown you did, absolute winner and I am won over...... Now this?
This bronze model is FIRE! I'm sold on Oris anyway...... Killing me mate!
Shame you aren't feeling it, really suits your style too👍

It will probably get even darker... You'd expect some flecks of green too at some stage. Wonder how the resale will be in the future for these models on the Used market.

I think it looks better now. The patina looks warm and a much nicer than the bronze Tudor watches.

    Thanks for the video.
You might already know this, but to get rid of the patina(most of it) you can cover your watch in lime/citrus juice for 10 min, then clean it with a soft brush 👍 i do it on mine every once in a while.

The bezel has held the shine better than the case because it is the highest part of the watch and gets polished by your cuff, the crown also gets a polish when the movement of the back of your wrist rubs against it.

On special or limited edition watches: The Oris ones I've seen are available (not too limited). They don't cost a ton extra, and my understanding is the extra they do charge goes to charity. Done this way it's a little fun and style choice for the consumer.

I love it because it is different. One does not see that type of look very often. If one was upset with the oxidation, I suppose a polishing cloth could fix that?

I really like that patina. Different strokes, guess. It has a nice red tint. My bronze Tudor has a pvd caseback to match the bronze case

Hmm, you're right, there's something that definitely looks off to me. I'm not sure if it's the patina on the bronze case or the dial contrasting with the black strap. I would like to see it on the original strap with the patina and whether that makes it look better. I think you've just convinced me that I don't want a bronze watch after all lol ...
I agree with you - the original condition of the case was gorgeous, reminded me of a red gold you'd see on an Omega or something.

I love the presentation style, production quality. Very nice video. Wonderful setting. I'd like to see that model fully patina'd. Appreciate your forthright opinion and your wife's! I like the original shiny too, BUT in the long haul, it would be a daily driver for me and banging the bronze around and aging it...would make it mine. You are correct about the strap choice. I don't care about the back. Oris doesn't just have LTD Ed. watches, their normal variety is GREAT fun. I have a black dial bronze bezel 65. Love it.

Thank you for that review. I really like the look fresh out of factory. It looks like rose gold and in combination with the red or green dial, which I prefer, it really feels like the perfect fall/winter watch. But... I wondered what it would look like when it patinas. I really like the overall design of it and it had a bit of a grail watch status for me, but now I’d rather go with a stainless steel case...

Finally got a chance to check out most of the Big Crown Pointer Date lineup. The bronze case didn't do it for me all shiny and I don't blame you for not liking the patina, it seems like a watch you'd either love to see develop patina or you should pass on it. For me, it was the red dial that popped the most. Interesting watch for sure, lots of character!

Great video. I have no bronze in my collection. I was never quite sure if it was for me or not. After this vid, I'm leaning towards staying away. You're right. A brushed caseback would have been better. Too much difference between shiny SS and weathered bronze.

I was recently pondering over the idea of getting my hands on a bronze diver from a microbrand. It would be my first bronze watch.
After watching your review and looking at more pictures of bronze pieces, I now know I don't actually like the patina myself. It can really look nasty and I read it can stain your skin and clothes. So I definitely won't be getting one.
I didn't know about the reason behind all these limited editions, thanks for sharing your insight.

Been watching your videos for sometime, however, I came about this accidently while I was research about Bronze watches. Love this format, very close to the Pelagos blue that I've watched before. Good job and keep those reviews coming. On a side note, I was thinking about getting the new IWC pilot chronograph in Bronze, just worried how does it look over time.

It’s a particular watch and I like that about it. It’s nice to see brands doing things different. If AP didn’t do that we wouldn’t have the Royal Oak and all the watches inspired by that iconic Genta design. This watch fits a certain style and personality and I like that. Sadly, it’s not a watch I would buy but I may change my view if I ever tried it on and spent some time with it.

To remove the patena, do a q-tip in a mild clear vinegar and gently rub it on the patenaed surfaces. Try to avoid excess fluid around seal areas, i.e., the chrystal and the crown. Vinegar is a mild acid and over time could accelerate seal deterioration.

  • @Blue_3rd

Why do you have to remove the patina? Seems daft to lend a bronze watch and expect it to be returned ‘cleaned’ 😃

  • @Osrona
    @Osrona 2 роки тому

I like the watch. Same for the 80th anniversary one with the green dial. The easiest way to remove the patina is to dissolve a pill of Kukident (bite cleaner) in a small glass and let rest the watch in it for a day...
