A few things I really like about this video:
1/ Oris had the balls to let you say what you actually thought about the piece. #RESPECT
2/ You actually said what you thought about the piece (in a way that was hard on the issues, soft on the people).
3/ You included a very useful lesson regarding the economics of limited editions. (Those things had never occurred to me. I totally get it. Now I know.)
Thanks to you, and thanks to Oris. I’m actually MORE inclined - not less - to buy an Oris watch in the future.

Harry Joiner thank for watching Harry. I’m going to go into detail in another video around my relationship with Oris. Rolf, the CEO of Oris, doesn’t care what bloggers or press say about their watches. They are proud if what they do and doesn’t need validation from anyone. They are far more confident than the large majority of brands.

I actually really like the patina and would want to see how it changes over time. The fact that different parts are ageing differently is how it's supposed to go. Way better than fake lume and the like. Wouldn't be my one and only watch, but would be a lot of fun to take a chance on this.

THANK YOU for doing this video. It is so hard to find decent photos, let alone press, of bronze cases after some patina. This has always put me off of them. It's a weird material where you're trying to picture what it's going to look like instead of taking it at face value like steel.

Having owned a bronze CW C60 Trident for about two years, I've found that the patina varies greatly depending on where you live and other factors. When it was new, I wore it swimming in a pool to force a patina and was very unhappy with the dull finish that resulted. I researched and found a great many ways to force a patina, but none of them appealed to me. So I decided to keep it polished for the time being. Lo and behold, after a few months it got a beautiful patina just naturally. It is much mush better looking than the one you got and even the various forced patinas I saw in my research. That said, I live in Denver, CO, and the climate is very different here than most other places. I suggest before any bronze watch owner gives up, experiment. There is probably a way to get a patina that you love, as have I.

Still wearing a Broze Mako “batman” from Zelos. The patina never got beyond a middle brown. I live in Dallas so it doesn’t see salt water air or anything crazy to give it color. I ended up using a craft store bronze brown to make it look like an old statue. Lit it much better that way. The exterior looks like Ancient Rome, Under the sapphire looks shinny and new. I love the contrast.

I've owned the Oris Carl Brashear Bronze for a couple of years and I understand what you mean about preferring the bronze case in it's 'new' more shiny state. I swim in the sea with mine and actually enjoy the change to a darker, patchy bronze. Mine has never turned green like a bronze Panerai would.
Whenever I get bored with the patina I make a fine paste with baking soda and water and brush gently with a VERY soft toothbrush. It never gets back to brand new condition, but takes on an amazing golden hue.
Thanks for yet another great video. The location is sublime!

Given the video a 👍 even though I was preparing to be annoyed from the outset due to number of negative comments the watch has been generating on social media. Can't argue with your opinions given that they are just that, opinions. I'm at exactly the same point in the patina journey as you right now. For me, the appeal of the watch is the changing nature of that case. Yes, I too preferred the watch when brand new, but I'm also loving not worrying about the condition of the case as time goes by and seeing something different in the case every week as it evolves. If the patina begins to annoy me, I'll just restore to original condition. Bronze cleaning is an easy diy job. Each to their own, but regardless of where this piece ranks in my collection, it's the most interactive experience I've had with a watch in ages. For me, that makes it worth the money, time and effort.

I have two Bronze cased watches from H2O watch, one is solid Bronze, Blue Dial, Stainless steel exhibition back. The other is in Mokume Gane, a bronze and steel striation! Yes, bright and shiny with that gold look in the beginning. Over time they patinaed very nicely, each one takes on its own look. Making it different from someone else's bronzed case. It gives it a charm of its own! By the way, it did look awesome in steel with the blue dial!

    Lemon Juice for patina removal.
I own bronze diver 65 and I can say that patina looks better once it matures to an even dark tone, yours is going through a patchy phase where it’s not uniform. It does get better. Also I notice that parts that come into more contact with skin patina faster which may explain why your bezel is still shiny.

I bought the stainless steel version with a blue dial as a daily wear to mix with my other watches. The first thing to say is it's all good. Feels good, light and comfy and of course it keeps good time. The serious note to make is these are not holding any value so you could get one like I did for less than half price, second hand, with only a few months wear on it. It's a good watch and I'm very pleased so far. I do like the bronze version but in my local dealer they only had a couple which sold very quickly. I also swapped the strap for a Watch Gecko Winchester brown leather, which is very soft and supple and at just £20 is a bargain.

The bezel has held the shine better than the case because it is the highest part of the watch and gets polished by your cuff, the crown also gets a polish when the movement of the back of your wrist rubs against it.

Hmm, you're right, there's something that definitely looks off to me. I'm not sure if it's the patina on the bronze case or the dial contrasting with the black strap. I would like to see it on the original strap with the patina and whether that makes it look better. I think you've just convinced me that I don't want a bronze watch after all lol ...
I agree with you - the original condition of the case was gorgeous, reminded me of a red gold you'd see on an Omega or something.

I’m amazed at the variation of the different levels of patina on the various parts. I have the Diver 65 and have not observed much patina at all on the bezel. I chalked that up to the fact that I turn it quite a bit, but it seems the bezels may be made out of a different bronze.

I like the darkening of the patina. I don’t have much expertise with bronze watch cases, but I do know that bronze boat fixtures can either be cleaned or left with the protective patina. It’s another case of personal preference. Some boat owners prefer the shiny, clean maintained look- others prefer the patina.

I don't have the link handy, but Panerai have a video about the making of their limited edition bronze watches (good video). I remember they mention that the case can be re-brightened (if desired) by dipping it in denture cleaner or something like that (don't quote me!).

Thanks for doing this, knowing how the case is going to change and how quickly is very helpful. I think the red dial Oris has available for the steel version would look better with the bronze case to give it a more complementary contrast.

Why do you have to remove the patina? Seems daft to lend a bronze watch and expect it to be returned ‘cleaned’ 😃

Great watch and useful commentary. Bronze certainly isn't for everyone, and I myself have been eyeing this one or the Tudor BB Bronze. Will probably go ahead with a more conventional piece.

Some bronze watches suit patina more than others, a big bronze Panerai looks great with a heavy patina. A really wrecked looking watch on a really destroyed, distressed leather strap has a certain charm if you get the combination right.

The thing I like about my bronze (dive) watch is that the patina changes - particularly in and out of salt water. It's like wearing a living thing

  • @dustytriumph

I have 2 bronze divers that have never been in water but have great 1.5 year natural patinas that in my estimation look fantastic and quite different from what is going on so far with that Oris. That patina is only just starting and is in that "homeless" stage you mentioned. I laughed my ass off at that metaphor. One of the beautiful aspects of a deep older patina is the varied areas and richness of colors and surfaces. You don't really want a sameness all over. Edges that often rub against sleeve ends etc... develop a soft mellow warm burnished quality and recessed areas become a flat, darker, brownish sometimes with a hint of greens beautiful aged 'grunge'. I was patient with mine and did not force the patina which I think looks really bad and unnatural.
I am really tempted to get a bronze Oris Big Crown Pointer Date Bronze but unfortunately I don't love any of the dial colors. I wonder if part of your lack of interest in this particular one might be that bronze dial. I don't think that plays well at all with the bronze case or hands. Personally I'd love a very dark green or a black with cream lume.

To remove the patina, I'd simply use NevrDull. It doesn't contain abrasives, it doesn't remove metal, it doesn't leave any residue when applied/used correctly. I have a solid brass Zippo that I've owned since the early 90s and that I've used NevrDull on whenever I got tired of the patina. Restores the look of the brass perfectly every time and hasn't done any damage whatsoever.

you might want to check/try the Christopher Ward bronze Ombre limited edition (dive watch). it mixes bronze with black (on the bezel and inside the dial), and in my opinion looks a lot better than oris's option. it looks amazing in pictures and is stunning in person. still not a fan of bronze watches, but CW,s just looks amazing. i'm certain i'll still like it even after it develops patina (only had it for a week or so). muhle glashutte also has a limited edition of a bronze dive watch that combines bronze with blue, and also looks a lot better than just simple bronze. maybe that's the way to make them stand out after the watch loses it's shine. cheers!

    Hey Adrian,
There is a video here on UA-cam by Christopher ward, the title is how to clean and take care of your bronze watch.
It's really good and shows in an easy way how to clean your bronze watch.
For people like you who don't like the patina of bronze can clean it like that.

Funny how different the tastes are especially when it comes to bronze cases. I like the patina so much that i actually force it.
The issues is, that most of the bronze watches are designed (dial, hand, case back) to look good in the shiny new state without considering any patina. That’s understandable because that’s the condition the manufacturer has to sell it. For me the biggest upside of a bronze watch is that I get an uneven and therefor unique patina. Than it becomes your personal watch.

The other factor will be where the wear is on the case (like your cuff rubbing on the bezel) as that will remove/reduce the oxidation. For cleaning back there are loads of recipes using baking soda, flour, water and vinegar. T cut and toothbrush, Coca Cola, ketchup, cape cod cloth are others.

I love the presentation style, production quality. Very nice video. Wonderful setting. I'd like to see that model fully patina'd. Appreciate your forthright opinion and your wife's! I like the original shiny too, BUT in the long haul, it would be a daily driver for me and banging the bronze around and aging it...would make it mine. You are correct about the strap choice. I don't care about the back. Oris doesn't just have LTD Ed. watches, their normal variety is GREAT fun. I have a black dial bronze bezel 65. Love it.

Thank you for that review. I really like the look fresh out of factory. It looks like rose gold and in combination with the red or green dial, which I prefer, it really feels like the perfect fall/winter watch. But... I wondered what it would look like when it patinas. I really like the overall design of it and it had a bit of a grail watch status for me, but now I’d rather go with a stainless steel case...

I think this Oris of yours is perfect, keep it,I love the look of it,I have a TC9 seiko movement and the bronze turtle is now a dark red-brown,but my steinhart bronze is a dark brass colour!! Why? But I love both,I don’t believe in forcing patina it develops naturally over a short time, however all you have to do is put it on a nato and wear it in the sea and let the sun dry it,then it looks amazing but after wearing it it mellows back and even self polishes in places.hardly anyone comments on my steel watches BUT I get loads of comments on my 2 bronze ones even women! The, have a warm look to them,I also have a brass tc9 pilot and it looks the same colour as my steihart! The steinhart says bronze on the back.

I think the mismatched levels of patina are likely caused by your contact with the watch, you touch the crown to adjust the time and maybe wind it sometimes, you clean the crystal and your cloth will gently also be cleaning the bezel.
If this is the case (heh case) then I actually kind of like that idea weirdly, it kind of shows the marks of your interaction with it.
    Great video :)

Been watching your videos for sometime, however, I came about this accidently while I was research about Bronze watches. Love this format, very close to the Pelagos blue that I've watched before. Good job and keep those reviews coming. On a side note, I was thinking about getting the new IWC pilot chronograph in Bronze, just worried how does it look over time.

Adrian, I don't disagree with your comments but my opinion is different to yours. I like the original strap and think it suits the watch. I wouldn't change it for anything else, even a Bark and Jack strap. I love mine, although I have to wear my glasses to see the date but that's a consequence of growing old. I took to it the moment I saw it and when the AD gave me a decent discount, I just had to take it home. The patina gives it an individual character, making it a unique piece.

I love the patina on the crown already. I bet after 5 or so years with more wear, tear and patina on a decent well weathered leather strap this watch would look amazing. Personally I’d like the rotor not to be red, but bronze, it’d be so cool 👍
