Safety Third is a weekly show hosted by William Osman, NileRed, The Backyard Scientist, Allen Pan, and a couple other UA-cam "Scientists". Sometimes we have guests, sometimes it's just us, but always: safety is our number three priority.
Nigel has stories I would expect from Kevin, the Florida man.
Canada man
Tbf Quebec is the Florida of Canada
He told even crazier stories in Trash Taste. He had them wonder at how he is still alive and with a full set of fingers.
Florida wack man
I love the silly little giggle Nigel does every time he recounts a near-death experience
Story Time: When I was around 13 years old my grandpa surprised me with a trip to skateboard camp. This camp was held at a resort in the mountains in New Hampshire / Vermont. I was a large child, rapidly approaching 6 feet tall and 200 pounds. I was not a gifted skateboarder, I considered myself a strong beginner at best. The skate camp offered daily afternoon activities that weren't skateboarding, such a going to the pool, mountain biking, tubing, and other cool things. I decided to go mountain biking on one of these afternoons, and was given the biggest rental bike they had available. Remember, this mountain biking in the mountains, meaning I am literally going up a ski lift with my bike (the lift had hooks to put the bikes on while you went up), and while most of the main hill-bomb type trails were closed, the vast majority of cross-country trails and similar "woods trails" were available. We all went down the same back trails as a group, with me almost completely at the back., I will never forget seeing the whole group do this small but fun looking jump, the only risk being a medium sized tree in the general landing zone. Every single person hit the jump, no one fell. I had confidence, I hit the jump with a good amount of speed, went up.... and landed perfectly. However.... I dragged to a halt immediately, almost falling over the handlebars. I get off the bike and a counselor stops to help... and it turns out I landed hard enough mess up the rear wheels lock-in mechanism, so the wheel just popped out of the frame, letting the back of the frame drag into the ground. I had to borrow the counselors bike while he patched mine back together to try and ride back. The bike rental guy laughed his ass off when I told him.
I was SO embarrassed. As a large child, I was mortified. I still think about it sometimes. Skate camp was pretty cool though.
This might be an unpopular opinion, but I like episodes like this one a lot more than some of the more elaborate ones, no guests, no fancy locations, just some tech guys talking about that time their fingers almost blew up. Feels like home.
the shitter/less interesting the title and premise are the better the episode is gonna be
But also the cave episode was the coolest thing I have seen in a while. Having podcasts on the two opposite sides of the spectrum seems to be ideal.

I relate to this because I'm all calm and relaxed until UA-cam interrupts my zen with "HEY NERD, WATCH THIS!" So, here I am.

Studying for my midterm tonight and I've been binging these in the background. Perfect timing for a new one!
same brother, hope it goes well for you
Same, I had 4 midterms last week and was binging this and Lex Fridman
Y'all I just finished. Killed it! (probably, hopefully, every-time I'm this confident I fail).
Kevin always has the best shirts. Please bring back the Drip Tee.
Nigel’s theory that kids don’t get hurt doesn’t seem very sound
They should all do a collab video testing that theory 😂
I am glad I survived my childhood, so that you could all survive your childhoods and make this podcast after surviving your adulthoods.
Thanks guys!
Back in high school for me when DARE was really being pushed, the only kids wearing the shirts were the drug users to be ironic.
Will talking about firing a phone though plywood or his roof just made me think of ididathing with his rocket hammer
I wonder what new lore we’re going to unlock today…
So Nigel's bike story is VERY similar to a story I have. I had this training bike that technically had back and front breaks, but the back breaks were the only ones that worked. I was riding down this hill and lossed control of the bike and was thrown into my neighbor's house. It was the worst concussion I've ever had.
Potentially a fun video idea, When I was younger my cousins and I enjoyed making things red hot in fires. One day when I wasn't around, they decided to put a bocce ball (big stainless steel ball) in and wait for it to go red.. Eventually it took too long and everyone went inside. Turned out the ball was hollow and filled with oil or water which vaporised. The ball exploded and each half departed, one in the roof that was overhanging the pit and the other putting a massive dent in the metal fire pit. Thankfully no one was around!
I was at my grandparents who lived at the top of a hill in a retirement community. I was rollerblading down this really steep paved hill, turning off at the first turn, getting pretty good speed. I decided to go past it to the 2nd turn once, quickly realized if i tried to turn i'd definitely crash because of how much speed i had gained, and just continued down the hill. Luckily at the bottom there was a curb with grass on the other side, so i just hit it and fell forward. Skinned my shin and arm really bad, went back up, stuck big bandaids on, and wore a sweatshirt to hide it the rest of the trip lol
Nicotine has helped people with schizophrenia and people with digestive disorders. But the risks usually outweigh the benefits and there are usually better options!
I also on a personal level used to get a lot of pain relief from smoking cigarettes. I have Ehlers-Danlos syndrome and constant chronic joint pain. I don’t know what the mechanism behind that, but it kind of slightly numbs everything.
I have had a significant difference in my digestive disorders since I quit smoking, but my heart is much healthier. And to be honest it’s likely I would have had the same digestive issues with or without cigarettes, and this way I am healthier now, and potentially healthier in the future too.
I agree with Nigel about Salvia, it's an interesting experience taking a powerful "white out" inducing dissociative. Not something I would call unpleasant, but definitely not very fun. I found trying to figure out what a television was to be unsettling. 🤣. I would say "if you want to know what it's like to hard reboot your entire brain, try salvia."
Hey Willam Eggman , Florida man Kevin and Nile purple !
Thank you all for somehow finding the time and for somehow coordinating these podcasts for us.
The fact you guys can all sit still for an hour blows my mind, actually
I love the fact that James Hoffman is a patreon
In regards to the treadmill vs running for real, like true engineers you are forgetting drag force.
Fellow Mexican here, if you want to see the kind of "fireworks" we play with, search for: "exploding hammer festival"
Rubber ball rocket sounds interesting, shouldn’t be too hard to make either… might do it idk
22:30 Something like that actually happened to someone in the town of my school. Unfortunately there was a truck turning into his street and it slowly ran him over. He didn't survive much longer.
As someone who has accidentally set off a model rocket motor with nothing attached, I can confirm that it is scary. It's like a massive angry bee on crack.
My salvia trip was a blast. Same for my two friends. We did it one at a time in a basement with all soft things in a locked room. Would recommend.

An actual outro. You all are growing up, I'm so proud. :D
Nigel needs his own podcast! And onlyfans! …or just onlyfans 😅
Yes xD
immscared to imagine how it would look like
So excited😂 Thank you for another podcast boys!🙏

For fireworks un-safety we have something nice, the San Juan. On some public squares they hang sparklers all over and lots of people run under it, an average family spend a 100€ on fireworks and theres a tally the next day for the number of appendages lost.
Bandwidth is one thing, but I'm guessing that whatever the software is doing for yous it probably stores and processes the 3 a/v streams "in the cloud", and while it isn't prohibitively expensive, I can see how it indeed becomes "actual money". You could, in theory, set up sth similar using open source and a spare (decent) PC, assuming you have a proper modern fibre (which I understand US has "patchy"), but it would be a lot of effort to save I guess not that much money, especially when you include all overheads and "convenience fee"
@Dalmaron The First That's why I put it in quotes, I'm painfully aware what the cloud is (fullstack /w devops) ;)
@Dalmaron The First np, good looking out, peace
24:38 dude memory unlocked, when I was a kid I had an electric bike, and my cousin and 3 other kids convinced me to daisy chain our bikes together, all was well while I was in control, I didn't try to snap the line or go to fast. But my cousin insisted on leading the pack, almost immediately it snapped and the bike I was on jack knifed and fell down handlebars up, I smashed into the bars with my chest, they had no rubber anymore. I had the biggest black bruise right on my heart. I'm lucky I survived legitimately.
Really glad I the algorithm has blessed me with yalls presence. It's my first time here, I noticed you have guests sometimes have you considered trying to get Hamilton Morris on I bet he'd be an interesting one.
Sugar dependency is actually a bit more like drug dependency, but the difference is that sugar is needed, or rather present in our bodies naturally. But indeed, it's reward centre activation addiction is also like other such ones as gambling, sex addiction, social media addiction. Better differentiation between psychoactive substances is whether it creates a physical/physiological dependency. Nicotine, alcohol, opiates definitely do. Sugar - a bit, but it's really very mild. I'm not sure about sympathomimetics, I think they don't really, but a rapid and drastic withdrawal might be risky regardless. I don't think THC has any withdrawal syndrome other than psychological...
Smoked weed all day every day for like 8 years. Got arrested and was on probation, so obviously I stopped. The only thing I felt was lack of hunger and a harder time sleeping for like three days. I guess you could consider that withdrawal? Lol very very mild.
its not needed, i eat meat everyday and not once have i died
@@CybersteelEx you make glucose in the glucogenesis process in your liver (from fat in meat). You need it, you just make it yourself.
44:42 it's because fireworks can more easily harm others more than cigarettes or alcohol
I like these guys but holy shit they can be so arrogant and dense when it comes to safety and law. Like duh fireworks are a problem because of the fire danger. Can cigarettes also cause fires? Sure but one could argue the entire point of fireworks is to cause fire lol
I remember being at a park as a kid and there was a super tall hill behind it with these downhill mountain biking jumps. There were jumps of all sizes from like little beginner ones that were less than a foot tall and some that were 2-3 feet off the ground, but there was one area that was like X-games-level professional you could die type of jumps. I remember going up there and standing at the base of one of the jumps and it was over twice my height - like legit 8-9 feet tall - and it had a gap of about 10 feet between itself and the landing ramp. On top of that, the hill that was at least a 50% grade so when you hit those ramps you were flying.
Anyways, I was down at the park with my friend and I saw this ~12 year old kid up on the hill. He was on this mountain bike that was way too big for him and we watched him make his way all the way up past the beginner and intermediate runs to the top of the death run. I thought he was going to go up and take a look, then walk back down but no, he started riding down. At this point, I try to get my friend's attention so I yell "holy sh*t! That kid's gonna die! haha" At that point, everyone looks up and this guy goes "wait! That's my son!" Right at that moment, the kid goes off the first massive jump and his front wheel plows into the back of the landing ramp and this kid gets launched like 20 feet down the hill face-first. I legit thought that the kid was gonna die, the dad sprinted up the hill while on the phone with 911 and they both end up walking back down the hill right as paramedics arrive. The kid ended up with a broken collarbone and some serious road rash, but otherwise was moving around fine.
Kids must have rubber bones and gelatinous internal organs because an adult who did that would have been put out of commission for sure.
Kevin passing the forbidden blunt 39:45
Why is this one so much quieter? Just me?
Tobacco as medicine, I know an old guy who is prescribed ten cigarettes a day to prevent constipation. It's a rare prescription, but not unheard of.
At the time, he was about 60 years old and had been smoking since he was seven, so when he tried to stop, he ended up hospitalized due to constipation. So, some older doctor showed up and had him go outside and have a smoke, which IMMEDIATELY (and messily) corrected the issue. So, he was prescribed ten a day, with encouragement to wean off in time.
Dare was so dumb, it was basically a bunch of cops coming into schools full of kids and teens, and teaching us how to get drugs, especially obscure ones, and telling us all the side effect they have even the good ones, and then saying "But don't do that because it's bad" like of course it didn't work.
1:01:20 Salvia came and went faster than the trip lasted. It wasn't stupid people doing it, it was psychonauts. Lasts as long as a nitrous trip... So maybe 10 minutes. But it effects felt like a Dmt/ayahuasca trip. My friends and I had great trips. The funniest trip I saw my buddy thought he was Tom Cruise in Mission Impossible... And started panicking when he learned he was in a closet.
Yeah, I also have some of those stories
I never thought I'd ever find a conversation about bikes really interesting, but here we are. xD Haven't been on a bicycle since I was 12-13 because I *hated* how my dad was always making me ride it. T-T
Spam in the background 😂😂
i feel 30 feet off of a house twice as a kid no idea how i’m not dead
they do the basic kinematics calculations before building the big air jumps so that they know how far they will go at a certain speeds
Nigel, you went a little over your head. What you’re referring to mixed with heroin is a “speedball.” An “eightball” is a unit of measurement for a single substance. An eighth, or 3.5gs
it is the low 20's average. If you DH Longboard you might be trained better to run out for close to the 30's. but past that... you go over face first which is where the rolls come in....
Watching this podcast after Williams video came out is like getting an inside on his video’s 😂
What? Salvia was fun…. Some of my friends who also tried it have doctorates now. You experience complete time dilation and a different “reality”, like a dream state. I was laughing the whole time. I thought I’d been laughing for hours in a technicolor, disco train station and started getting concerned the dorm RA’s would get suspicious, but it was only 3 minutes. Definitely bummed it’s not available anymore.
Most peoole with those nightmare experiences, knew nothing about harm reduction and smoked full bowls of a super potent extract. KOR agonists are really neat.
High performance runner here:
No, you’re not faster on a treadmill inherently. There are some treadmills that are faster to run on that are kinda shaped like bananas. But because of relativity it’s not faster to run on a treadmill than on regular ground lol.
Also no teenage girl can run 30mph. 30kmph is probably what was happening (which is still crazy fast! Good for her!)
Top speed is around 45 k/h for the fastest people in the world (28mph).
If you've only heard bad salvia trips, you are hanging with the wrong crowd. I've heard dozens of trascendental stories with life changing experiences with very positive vibes. What I've heard is that you are supposed to take salvia alone, in dim light and with good ambience music. The trip is 5 to 20 minutes but you experience time dilation so intense you can have an hours-long experience within that time.
I’m still getting over William chopping a live wire in half with a meat cleaver
Bois thanks for keeping me company while I work
when i was a kid i used to bike to like tennis lessons and one time it started raining qnd i took the umbrella on the bike there was w really big downhill with a speed bumb half way and id always jump on it but i was like distracted with the umbrella and i jumped and landed without my hands on the handlebars i fell face first into the umbrella and one of the umbrella arma went through my skin right below my elbow and just made a giant gash. i got up and rode the back back home after i got like stitches and everything still have the scar but like i just got up and went home
Fun fact: the table thing he tried to jump with the roller skates is called a manual board/pad. Used for skateboarding, ya get up on it and manual (wheelie).
Had a add for riverside before this video and wondered why , now i know. it does seem pretty good though
barbed wire; cows hate it, people hate it, my clothes hate it, but
1 day setup lasts 30 years; gotta love it.
California high school student here, but we are actually taught about alcohol and tobacco in health class now!
so... around 18 years ago I was just out of the military and I smoked salvia with a guy who was still in the military! yeah... colors where pretty for about 3 minutes then we both felt dumb. I am sure he felt more than dumb as his career could have been on the line.... but yeah over all, a over (as well as under) hyped substance.
Sounds like Kevin and I are kindred spirits. I hate having to do things. When I’m home I’m zen. My fortress of solitude if you will.
Family dinners are a big peeve of mine.
Hell yeah longboarding! I'm an avid dog boarder I highly recommend.
If your dog likes to pull, get them a harness, yourself a longboard. And find a nice section of clean pavement next to some grass. Or like any board walk in socal. And go.
I'm learning to skateboard now. I feel like my skills have plateaued with longboard dog skating. I want to finally learn how to Ollie and shit. Ideally learn to Ollie my longboard. But like yeah.
Currently in the riding/manual nollie? What's a nose manual? Then maybe a shove it. And Ollie. Basically I want to get comfortable with the board, and transferring my weight on it. Then learn to Ollie, and probably grind before kickflips.
I've just put this off because I have a husky and he needs to run. But I literally bought my skateboard the day before I got him or like the week.
I got him when he hopped a fence.
I have more than a couple… but I lived to tell the tale.
One that comes to mind is diving out of a canoe into 2’ of water. Landed face first
Smashed my face and somehow didn’t break my neck.
Oh and it was during a trip to the river for my 13th birthday.
Kevin - I also drink from comically large glass jars.
Despite what they say, I think Salvia is actually pretty neat. It's not something I would call pleasant or fun, but it's fascinating to see what the human brain is capable off. The coolest thing about Salvia is that scientists have found an endogenous substance that binds to the kappa opioid receptor in the exact same way as Salvinorin A. Pretty wacky stuff. Also, it's never been found to cause brain damage. Indigenous people in Mexico have been using it ceremonial for centuries and they have no abnormalities in their brain.
William’s talking about his E and I’m over here with my J motor like “eh it’s not even an L3”
I had a good time with salvia. I smoked it once and had nothing negative. Just a wild trip for like a minute.
So Nile isn’t dead.
"turns out the brake was in here the whole time" fuck you will I laughed cereal out on my bed 😂😂
Helmet does stop your head scraping along the floor if you come off
Would be cool if you could get Naomi Wu on the podcast.
For the record, and the sake of harm-reduction:
An 8ball is just 3.5g (⅛ of an ounce) of powder/hard drugs (blow, m*th, Molly, H, etc.).
A SPEEDBALL is the mix of an upper and downer (like what Nigel mentioned).
My grandpa had a fake security camera outside of his house, never got robbed
I feel like you need to know I'm sitting in Norway watching this. Now you know.
okay so how the fuck is weed a schedule 1 drug bc it has medical uses and fun fact i would say form personal experiences that alcohol and tabaco have a addiction potential that is close to like coke (kids stay away from drugs) also love the podcast really fun to watch
Sup with this podcast being so scuffed but so good to listen to
when i was 8 or so i almost went digging around in a microwave. if my dad hadnt yelled at me i probably wouldve discharged one of those caps through my heart lol
Nicotine has a medical use, it can be used to treat tourettes syndrome

56:25 Same here in Finland, and I fucking hate the state monopoly. It is morally despicable.
"It's like, old emo music"...Are you trying to tell me that y'all were at the WWWY festival?! I COULD HAVE SEEN YALL?!
I'm gutted.
DARE taught our school that huffing markers got you high lol we were literally banned from having permanent and expo markers in our stuff and the teachers had to lock theirs in their desk drawers
Great podcast boys
I had a friend who spent a week outside with a group of her friends stealing Robitussin and robitripping.
2 posts within a 10 day span this is insane
Ahhh nigel is talking about research chemicals
At 58:50 what nigel says is incorrect. What he is referring to is a speedball, a mixture usually of heroin and cocaine, crack or amphetamines. An 8ball is simply 1/8th of an ounce of cocaine.

remember to always consult your doctor concerning use of anything other over-the-counter drugs
tbh a lot of the over-the-counter stuff is pretty nasty, best to consult a doctor about anything you do not have an in-depth understanding of their mechanism.
My sister hit a mailbox on her bicycle playing Pokemon GO lol
Estes plasma cutter vs raw pork!
William clearly hasn't seen enough Sam pilgrim if he's never seen a man bend a bike. Man made a bike out of what I'm pretty sure was a bamboo frame purely made as an artpiece?
