@@raider2095yes, he was, but because he was doing Family Ties at the time, his schedule didn’t match up, so they went with Eric Stoltz, who drove everyone nuts, to a point where they fired him and got Michael J Fox.

I think Eric was a good actor, but he was more into drama roles. Michael J Fox had more of a comedic element to him, that just fit so well.

Agreed, MJF had a little more body & facial animation than Stoltz.....Like when he's looking at Glover, he's purposely making a funny odd facial expression. Whereas Stoltz has a more plain expression.

No that’s not it. One feels like a drama, the other a comedy. Fox has got the perfect look of wonder, Stoltz the look like nothing funny is going on.
When you remember what a great job he did as Marty McFly it becomes even more impressive learning that he worked TWO jobs throughout the entire filming of the movie. He was sleeping 2-3 hours per day for months while playing Marty at night and Alex Keaton during the day. He talks about it in Still, his autobiographical film out right now. GREAT actor, great person.

I think with a movie like this they took a more commercial approach with both Michael J Fox and the family becoming wealthy in the future. The commercial approach was also a right wing one in terms of the message it sent. I am a huge fan of the movie and don’t know how good it would have been without these things but I don’t believe Eric Stoltz as the Irish American Marty character. Ben Stiller as an overtly Jewish Marty would have changed a lot about the movie. Like his dad being bullied could have then been seen as anti-Semitic in the 1950s and wouldn’t be as funny somehow. It could still be anti-Catholic actually considering how conservative some of those Southern California towns were at the time

Fox was so much more dynamic, the way he slightly bobs his head up and down in disbelief in the first clip, runs into the car to show how out of place he is in the second and spins back towards Doc in the last like he doesn’t even know where to look make for such a more believable and fun version of the character!

People are too hard on Stoltz. He did a very good job as Marty. The directors replaced him because he came across too serious & wasn't getting the laughs they wanted. They completed half the movie with Eric. I hope they release it soon.
It wasn't just that he was too serious, it's that he didn't listen to direction. He was the actor, not the director. The director asked him to do simple things and he would say things like "my character wouldn't do that." For instance, in the scene shown here where they cross the street, the director wanted Marty to trip over the curb, and Stoltz refused. Also, he would not slide over the hood of the car, he would just run around it to get in. The directors had a vision, and he wasn't following it.
They only completed 40 minutes in the can with Stolz.
Michael's Marty is a bit goofy and we love him for it, but even if Eric was being uncooperative, I can see what he was going for. He's a little more dramatically, quietly, realistically shocked at what he's seeing.
And he does look so much more like George's (Crispin's) son. Unfortunately for him, it wasn't his story to tell his own way.

@@rsuriyop well he had just got done doing a movie called "Mask," that earned him high praise and he probably thought he was unstoppable, like some actors do. My guess anyway. There is also a story where after the table read everyone was really happy and excited how funny and great the movie was, and when someone asked him what he thought, he said he thought it was a tragedy where Marty remembers a past that no one else does and it's kind of like he is in his own world now. And while they makes sense, it is not what they were going for. I wouldn't mind seeing them remake this movie as a darker version of itself though.

This movie is absolutely perfect, the chemistry between Lloyd/Fox will undeniably go down in movie history as one of the best tandems in cinema.
MJ Fox made this film his own; it would have been a completely different feel with Eric.
Best role Michael J Fox ever did was the Back to Future movies. Knowbody can replace him. Love you Michael.

Little factiod: due to executives at Paramount being more lenient with Fox's shooting schedule Michael J Fox was able to take the job however he still had to do Family Ties, giving him a break yet also handing him the responsibility of a double shooting schedule.
Don’t forget teen wolf which he was also filming at the same time, pretty remarkable really

In the new Flash movie, Barry accidentally creates an alternate timeline where Eric Stoltz got to be in the final film. Nobody else in the theatre seemed to understand why that was funny except for me.

Yeah it was and it seems like the version with Eric is just dark in tone and vibe cause when he arrives in hill valley it’s raining whereas in mjf version it’s bright and sunny, even the actors acting opposite him are giving more serious dramatic vibes in their acting opposite eric, i do kinda wonder what that back to future would’ve been like but I don’t think it would’ve been a memorable iconic hit like the mjf version is

You know how many cinematic near misses that we haven't heard of. Recasts during production happens a lot. Stoltz looks like more like the cool kid vs the underdog.

You can even tell how much more effortlessly Chris Lloyd was able to play off Michael J. Fox. He looked much more tense acting opposite Eric. Michael J. Fox and Chris Lloyd were just perfection together. Nothing against Eric but the lightning in the bottle (or in the DeLorean) just didn’t happen until Michael was cast.

Rob always said that he wanted Michael J Fox from the beginning though, but Could you imagine a universe where Eric Stoltz would have had to play the part had it not been for Paramount for NBC agreeing to be more lenient with Michael J Fox's Family Ties shooting schedule and therefore making Back to the Future possible.
I remember back in 1991, Me and my lil bro was watching a Eric stoltz movie, and we both remember me saying how much he looked like Michael j fox. And cracking jokes on how it was really him in back to the future movies…..
