Grateful Dead - Truckin' (New York, NY 10/30/80) (Official Live Video)
Вставка
- Опубліковано 5 лют 2025
- "From the penultimate show of the Radio City Music Hall run in 1980, Truckin' was also a great song to launch the second set jam. During this period, Truckin' was generally slotted in one of two places: before the Drums/Space sequence, sending the Dead into an uninterrupted hour-long segued sequence of music, or coming out of Space. Toward the end of the 1980s, it was used almost exclusively in the former slot, but the latter placement of Truckin' always began a wonderful, uninterrupted, and long sequence of Dead magic." - David Lemieux

Penultimate
Yeaah penultimate
My husband saw them in Germany in 1984 and they played for like over 12 hours!
tu 4 making this and the dudes helped. l am; 72
Relax 🙂
This song got me in trouble many years ago, In kindergarten my son taught the song to his classmates. Parents had issues and I got a call at work to meet the principal. What a long strange trip it has been.
I don't get it lol what's the problem? Gambling references? Driving references¿ Jesus lol. Maybe they don't realize Bourbon Street is a real place and they dont want the kids to think drinking is cool? Or maybe they really like downers and cocaine and don't like the fact that this song is demonizing their favorite pastimes? Because kids are NOT going to get the psychedelic references, and even if they did how is that any worse than forcing kids to say the pledge of allegiance? (Sorry I got a little off track at the end I just fucking hate the pledge of allegiance lol)
@Jon Jonathan That's interesting, because by the way you voluntarily stand for the pledge you look like an obedient employee.
@Jon Jonathan I was told that I didn't have to say it, but I'd be given detention if I didn't at least stand
@@Neros_Neckbeard I wasn't informed that you didn't have to participate in the pledge until my last year of college
Lol
I was lucky enough to catch this show. 17 yrs old and I missed the train home to South Jersey. Didn’t matter a bit. Such a great night
Go South Jersey!!
Just keep on Trucking, Did you ever get home.
@@gregorykopchak3475 Yep.
I'm not sure which Radio City show I saw, but what I remember most was having to sneak back in to my boarding school in the middle of the night. It would have been worth getting caught, but my friend and I somehow managed to get in.
that happened to me in edmonton alberta, except it wasn't the dead it was the chilli peppers and it was a plane i miss,,good times,,,never seen the dead though,,
It's weird, I'm a young fan (age 19), and I'm able to watch one of my favorite bands play live on a recording that's a few weeks older than my own mother
Some time your Mother speaks in ways WE only understand later ☮️🙊
As the technology improves, you will indeed be able to hear the music even better than if you were actually at the show, in some cases.
god I miss the 80's/90's when me and my friends would quit our jobs every summer to follow the Dead across America. so many amazing friendships were made. nothing in normal society life can compare.
Yes, quit our normal jobs. Touring around USA with my pals. Lucky to still be around😂. Really, those were the best times, ever🎉
I had a friend from high-school Jen she would go to every show every summer also, they let her tape off the mixer.
Then there's those that show up to hear it all. See it all. Be it! My 9yr old saw one too & is a follower of this music.
What a time to be alive, huh?
The 90's were the last "free" decade we've had. After 2000 the big brother was too much and now in 2024 it's out of control.
Agreed. The sad thing is when bands like Grateful Dead stop, there is no band even comes close to replacing them.
It was recognized by the United States Library of Congress in 1997 as a national treasure.
Thanks I sing quite well too
My poetry hangs in the library of Congress next to Thomas Jefferson
MOMMA?!?
I used to hate this band so much. I never understood them. Then I heard Truckin' a couple weeks ago after like 30 years and thought damn, this is good. Sorry that I didn't really give them a chance.
You're becoming woke 😂
Every time they play live each song is played a unique way. There's no logic behind saying they are good or bad for a specific performance or release of any given material. All that being said I think opinions are for an individual so much love.
Never too late. I hope to take this thru the pearly gates when the time comes 😎
Why were you hating life so much? So sorry.
@@howardrobinson4938my thoughts exactly
You'll never hear the music like this again long live the Dead
when I heard Phil passed, I knew I wanted to come straight here and listen to this, RIP Sir

I didn't know he passed until I saw this comment 😢

Great show
At it for close to 60 years, and still sounding awesome ;)
The music never stopped!

I’m 68 years young and this brings back memories! Oh wow how I wish I was a young woman again!
I was there, I just turned 21 3 days before this concert. The Radio City Concerts, I think it was for the whole week were epic. We went to 4 or 5 of the shows out of the week they played there. It was so fun and a carefree time! I truly believe it can't be replicated today. They try with their Nevada Sphere, but it's not the same without Jerry!
What a song ! I can play it over and over in my car radio.
Love that Hammond organ! "What a long strange trip it's been!" Peace Phil!
I was there.. I am 60 now. and it just occurred to me ..... what a long strange trip itś been. -- All the glory to God for He has been with me every step of the way.

Amen!
Truckin'
Now we can understand a profession that is truly "Essential"
❤️
what were you smoking today
The best cruising music
I was 5 months old when they played this show 🤘🤘
This is the best; to be able to see this in 2024 and think back to life in 1980, which at the time felt like a huge departure from the 70s and 60s but in retrospect, 1980 not nearly the mess that we have today.
The Eighties were my thirties, best years of my life 😊
This makes me smile because my dad was a huge music fan, especially the Grateful Dead. He used to go to a lot of Grateful Dead concerts. I miss you, Dad. ❤
MY GOD WHAT A FUCKING GREAT BAND!
Uh no, your out of your mind, this band sucks
You should've heard them in the '70s.
Love this tune tripping through my long strange trip.
one of my top ten songs of all time!
i have about a thousand top ten songs- wish i could play them all at the same time- man that would be a trip!
Bob nailed the lyrics! Nice! :D
what song did you listen to because he literally opened this with "detoidetroidetroit its all on the same street" hahaha
@@taylorhc2308 For Bob that's as close as you get to nailing it with this song.
@@gerkowijnholds but 9 verses of desolation row he can nail everytime lol
Yeah, I loved that list of cities that were all Detroit. Rock on Bobby!
@@taylorhc2308 To be fair, all the cities are Detroit these days.
Ushered like 7 shows at the Warfield earlier that month, up close and personal, a great period for a great band indeed.
I remember seeing The Dead, The Band and the Allman Bros. at Watkins Glen in 1973, it was a 3 day outdoor concert, there's a great clip on UA-cam, it like 9 minutes long, and shows 600,000 hippies converging on that little town, most people just hitch hiked up, no tickets either ...lol
The chain link fence just got plowed down, despite that many kids, everyone I seen was cool, well all the weed and other stuff kept people pretty mellow ...lol
To this very day I still meet people who went ... that's pretty amazing by itself ... oh I miss those days !
Happy Christmas All !!!
Yup, I was there, age 17, a total Dead marathon -- Three hours "sound check" the night before, 5 hours show at noon the next day, then, after The Band and the Allman Brothers Band, mind you, a jam with all of them. I remember we left around 1 AM to avoid the traffic (good call) and were thinking that if we never heard any of those three bands again, we had heard our fill. Great show.
@@charlesbarber6137 One of the things I remember most, was after the rains and everyone trying to figure out how to get back home. There were these mountains of cases of bottled water and 1 pound bags of Granola. But the crazy part was Ayer eating the Granola and drinking water, the Granola was like little sponges that exploded in my stomach. But hey it was an amazing adventure all and all.
Fortunate
I remember the Truckin performances from this era from shows in New York/New England. I remember that Phil's bass coming out of an outro was a sonic boom that punctuated the song with all the force of his might. I had never before experienced bass frequency sound reinforcement capable of creating that experience. The live audio equipment always seemed top shelf to my ear once any mixing problems in early songs were addressed. Absolutely unique life experience that encouraged my mind to differently, with a focus on creative energy and what could be if we try this.
Thank You
this song is like beer-it makes me feel mellow
Yeah, I always say their music is like valium for my ears.
What a long strange trip it's BEEN for SURE
Greetings from Dublin Ireland brother and sisters loved the DEAD
Saw them 10+Times..
This show is when I got on the bus. :) :) :) :)
serious musicians. so lovely
What a long strange trip it’s been, Bob.
I fortunately was at Watkins Glen as a German student. Grateful Dead, The Allman Brother Band and The Band were playing and it was phenomenal superb. At that time they hardly were known in Germany.
Truckin', got my chips cashed in
Keep truckin', like the do-dah man
Together, more or less in line
Just keep truckin' on
Arrows of neon and flashing marquees out on Main Street
Chicago, New York, Detroit and it's all on the same street
Your typical city involved in a typical daydream
Hang it up and see what tomorrow brings
Dallas, got a soft machine
Houston, too close to New Orleans
New York got the ways and means
But just won't let you be
Most of the cats that you meet on the street speak of true love
Most of the time, they're sittin' and cryin' at home
One of these days they know they better be goin'
Out of the door and down to the street all alone
Truckin', like the do-dah man
Once told me, "You've got to play your hand"
Sometimes the cards ain't worth a dime
If you don't lay 'em down
Sometimes the light's all shinin' on me
Other times, I can barely see
Lately, it occurs to me
What a long, strange trip it's been
What in the world ever became of sweet Jane?
She lost her sparkle, you know she isn't the same
Livin' on reds, vitamin C, and cocaine
All a friend can say is, "Ain't it a shame?"
Truckin', up to Buffalo
Been thinkin', you got to mellow slow
It takes time, you pick a place to go
And just keep truckin' on
Sittin' and starin' out of the hotel window
Got a tip they're gonna kick the door in again
I'd like to get some sleep before I travel
But if you got a warrant, I guess you're gonna come in
Busted, down on Bourbon Street
Set up, like a bowlin' pin
Knocked down, it gets to wearin' thin
They just won't let you be
You're sick of hangin' around and you'd like to travel
Get tired of travelin', you want to settle down
I guess they can't revoke your soul for tryin'
Get out of the door and light out and look all around
Sometimes the light's all shinin' on me
Other times, I can barely see
Lately, it occurs to me
What a long, strange trip it's been
Truckin', I'm a goin' home
Whoa, whoa, baby, back where I belong
Back home, sit down and patch my bones
And get back truckin' on
These guys are so good. I always blast this in my car.
Thanks man new to the band mostly metal but since corona found out prog and simmialar styles
Great version!! Man they were firing on all cylinders well into the 80s thankfully since I didn't get to my first show til '86. Now if I could only remember the date of my first show 🤯 Two or three early ones was Dead and Dylan at Giants stadium..but think that was '87. Also Jerry on Broadway- '86 or '87. And The Dead with Branford Marsalis at the Nassau coliseum and MSG! Such great times!! Jerry on Broadway was wild as I knew almost nothing about his solo band but we were first row and after that I was certainly on the bus forever! I have two amazing pics of Jerry and the band from that Broadway show that I managed to take before they threatened to take away my camera! They're pretty much my two most cherished real pictures as there were no cell phones at that time 😃🍄✌️🐢🙏
dude for real, all of these videos are already on youtube. David, you have access to the entire fucking Grateful Dead Vault, and you're literally uploading videos you blocked or are already up on UA-cam. Give the people what they want, what we NEED!!!
I was there for two of these shows, Halloween being one of them. Awesome. I'll never forget these shows. The best? No, the best I ever saw was at a small venue in Binghamton N.Y. That was awesome. I guess maybe 3 to five thousand people? At most. That was I guess in 83 or 84. Maybe someone else out there remembers the show. I never had such a blast. If someone out there remembers please respond. Quite sure that was the only Binghamton show in that time frame. Let me know!!!!!!!
Quite possibly the ultimate Dead song. Out of 100's?
these guys love their fans..........
Maaaaaaaannnnn, this is skitz, brent on the organ killing it
A long-time favorite... saw these guys in Minneapolis years ago ... likely late 1980. 😊
Groovy times back them.
Deep respect...
When you hear the name you think Metal, and then you get to listen to that awesome Country and Blues, and your life changes
This just really flicks my bean.
Saw them in i believe 1984 at Saratoga SPAC. There was a hole in the fence and many snuck in. Security laughed and waved everybody through. Legend has it about 50,000 were inside but only 15,000 tix were sold. That show was the reason they put a cap of 20,000 for every show afterwards. Funfact 😀 I'll be seeing Dead and Company for 3rd time this Summer at Saratoga 🙋♂️
spac is always a great time!🤯😎
Right after Truckin’, Billy Cobham joins in for Drums. One of the greatest drummers of all time !
I always wondered why this run was so damn tight... The boys were showing off lol
An epic drum solo . I think this was the best show out of the eight
I'm a fan of the Great full dead.
Posting the Radio City Shows is long overdue. Without question, the Radio City / Warfield shows are historically some of the most significant shows in GD History. Here’s why. They planned for these shows vocally, and purposefully did not over play the songs or jams. They new they had an Album and Video in the works. You could say they behaved themselves and put their best foot forward. Radio City was also one of the best sounding venues for them. The mix was perfect in house and on the recordings. After Reckoning, more songs were released in HD format. After they finished up with these shows and returned back to their original show format, the Fox show that followed was explosive with the same classy playing, but with the Jams. For many years I have wondered why GD focuses on later shows videos with Bruce and Vince, when in fact they should be putting money into remastering and releasing the entire Radio City and Warfield run in Blueray. Some comments here throw bob under the bus for forgetting words, but not in these shows. The emotional energy of the band was sincere and they were all in - just exactly perfect. The Good lovin from Radio city is off the hook with Weir already singing at the top of his lungs by the third verse.
MrKnowItAll great review. Man, happy I clicked on this suggested video. Sound is spectacular as is the playing and energy. I’m generally a late 80s, 1990 fanboy, but this is terrific!
@@Twayne7 I hopped on the tour bus in 77, and when Brent joined the band, the sound changed. He and Jerry played off of each other because Brent brought a greater dynamic range to the band sound. Go To Heaven, is evident of this sound.
For those inclined, here is the second set of the fox show which is just a handful of shows after the Radio/Warfield run. The connection and crescendo's are strong:

Thanks for that bit of history. Is this NYCs radio city music hall that you refer to?
As much as I love the Dead and this song in particular, it's those endless Garcia jams that makes it hard for me to listen to them as much as I'd like. I guess I just haven't done enough drugs. Even with this one, I'm just waiting for him to finally stop "playing with himself" at the end! That said, he is nearly virtuoso level, so I can understand a bit of why he's so self indulgent, but come 'on, man. I gotta go pee!! 🤣🤣
roll on, roll on!
I L❤VE THE DEAD
Great stuff- Jerry on the Other Side of stage is cool..
Also? Brents Hair is friggin AWESOME
Jerry is standing where you see him as he always had, when playing with Phil and newly dearly departed Keith.
IMHO 🙏Garcia showed his love and respect 100% for Brent by reconfiguring to playing nearer him, as he did.
@@stephaniedavies1354 Yep.. whenever I saw The Dead Jerry was on Stage RIGHT altho my First 2-3 Dead shows 78/79 I Jer was still on Stage Left

I was just out of high school working in a startup restaurant with no chance in hell of making it. I truly still feel bad for the owners, so dumb horrible times they lost everything.
Ah the Grateful Dead, making the 80's look like the 60's.
I disagree. They were just the best of the 80s. There was hardly any 60s sound. It had taken its roots from the 60s but a root makes not a tree!
This crowd doesn't look 60s at all. I'm kinda surprised by how "straight" they look
I love Thursdays just so I can see what New Grateful Dead Video has been Uploaded this week !!!!! Cannot wait for #June1976 Boxset !!!!! 💀⚡
Great version.
Up in Arcata California in the 1970s I knew the Artist at Bug Press who designed Jerry's prototype guitar.
Ya know what I love? Couldn't none of em 'sing' for piss really... But they sure made some sweet music.👌💯

Viajando, tengo mis fichas cobradas
Sigo viajando como el do dah man
He estado pensando, tienes que calmarte lento
Viajando, me voy a casa
Whoa, whoa, nena, de vuelta a donde pertenezco
De vuelta en casa, me siento y parcheo mis huesos
Y vuelvo a manejar el camión.

Just the thought that the Dead were gonna play somewhere in the Empire State must of triggered law enforcement, like kicking a bee hive. Screw ‘em. Saw it first hand April 1982 at Nassau coliseum after the show when the cops blocked off the exit with dogs and paddy wagons, then we did a 180 and drove thru the steel fence, thru the swale and out eastbound on the L.I.E. Out to Shoreham. Great show by the way.
