I'm a junior environment artist trying to learn more about shaders and anything related to it and this channel is always my first stop in researching and looking for tutorials. Thanks so much Ben!
I didn't know you were at Unity now, that's great. And especially makes me thankful that you show Unreal too, because I always tell people that shaders are *just* math and not particularly engine dependent.
Thank you for your work, Ben. Btw your Unity ShaderGraph is my favourite shader tool so far. It's way more user oriented than even UE's Material Editor etc. Thank you for such an amazing product.
I can't stress the value of this channel enough, it's like a personal mentor teaching more the WHY than the HOW, it's amazing. He can make a 20 minutes video with the most basic shader and you'll still came back to rewatch and learn something new. He's like the Bob Ross of shader, a true gem on youtube
Congratulations on creating such a wonderful channel and community. Your tutorials are to tech artists what John Carmack open sourcing ID Tech was to programmers. I would love to see an intro to HLSL. Followed by some more advanced examples. Thanks again, Ben. Happy New Year.
I've learned so much from Ben's videos! Every time there's a technique I'd like to learn the first thing I do is search through all the videos that are here. It's like we have free access to Ben Shader University!
Mr. Cloward being new to Unreal and finding this gem of channel to learn shaders has been more than a blessing, my friends and I always redirect people to your channel when it comes to shader logic! So thank you so so much for all the hard work you do and by not putting all of this information behind a pay wall it's a great asset to the 3D community . Happy new year's! God Bless! 😄🙏
After 250 videos we get a proper intro! Love your videos Ben; I can't tell you how many times someone has asked me something about shaders and I've pointed them to one of your videos. You've helped so many people, and it's appreciated.
Thank you Ben, I really love your videos! In the background of the waterfall I can see an amazing effect of water sliding on the wet rock. Did you made a tutorial about it? I browsed your playlists but couldn't find it
Hmm, good question! It's a decal with a scrolling water ripple normal map. I can't remember if I've explained how that works. I'll look it up and if I haven't, I'll add it to my list of future videos. Thanks!
@@BenCloward Mr Cloward, if you find the time, can you show coding in games too in unity and unreal such as triggering shader effects simple operations. there isn't much shader triggering event related tutorials out there. like triggering a shader effect and so on. not too complex codes but you already taught how to make and create the shader, can you also show how to trigger them or switch from one shader to another in unity and unreal. idk if im explaining it right or not but if you get the idea please place it on your list sometime in the future as I am assuming at the moment you have something else planned for your channel. you're awesome.
Hello, Ben. I'm a technical artist for games from China. Two years ago, when I just graduated, I came across your channel. I've learned a lot from your channel and got a job that I'm quite satisfied with. I sincerely thank you here. What I'd like to ask is whether you are considering releasing some more advanced shader courses later, such as those related to raymarching or various advanced algorithm shaders.
Thank you) Don't stop. These are useful lectures. True, I would also waiting separate lectures on the “code” of the shader; many things cannot be assembled in nodes. Are there any plans for materials based on "Substrate Materials" that Epics in UE plan to replace the PBR pipeline?
Your channel is a gold resource for learning shaders for games engines and 3d software. I was just wondering that have you ever considered making tutorials for Shadertoy or p5.js' WEBGL Renderer? In that way, you can teach shaders to also those who are outside of CG and game dev community as those people can heavily benefit from your shader knowledge.
As I said in the video, I'm not teaching engines, I'm teaching computer graphics principles. So a large percentage of what I present should be applicable to CryEngine. I don't have any experience in that engine myself, though, so I probably wouldn't be able to use it to present material.
Hi Ben, I'd like to know if you have some tutorials on how to mask out an object from another in UE? I have a terrain with a ring on top and I'd like to mask out the outer edges from outside the ring. How can I do that? Thanks!
Thanks for Sharing your knowledge with us always enjoy your videos and they really help me on my tech art journey. Do you plan to do some substrate tutorials in the future? I’m really interested in that topic and don’t find that many helpful resources
I would like to see you build gerstner waves with particle systems for bubbles and foam, with realistic fluid dynamics. the detailed cresting waves could be used locally, and the less detailed simulation could be the LOD outside the volume the system runs in. Sebastian League made something very interesting, but he does it in code. I was interested in seeing if an effect like this can be achieved in water with the node editor.
Ryan Brucks has also done something like this. You can use the same Gerstner function that's animating your water to also move your particles and spawn them when the crests are high. It would combine my particle system tutorial with my water shader tutorials. I haven't done something like this - mainly because I haven't needed it, but if I do find an opportunity to develop it, I'll be sure to make a few videos showing how it's done.
Firstly I wanted to say a huge thank you for all your videos. My Tech Artist day-to-day role has changed quite dramatically to being more... Tech and less artist... and your videos have helped massively in reducing the learning curb in which I'm struggling with. I wanted to ask: Many of your videos were created using UE4 (such as your world building and materials 101 playlists). I'm trying to dive into UE5 as well as learning using our in-house engine. However, the differences between UE4 and UE5 sometimes confuse the heck out of me. I don't think re-creating the whole playlist is worth it as they are still really well put together tutorials - but would some quick shorts (timestamped and linked into those UE4 videos at the relevant timings) detailing how to achieve the required result in UE5 be possible? Essentially just something that ties into the video and shows how to continue following along. There seems to be the occasional difference between the two which stumps me.
awesome video, can you make some videos about blender and if it is possible to translate some stuff from unity/unreal to the shader editor in blender? while maybe not all features can be translated because it's not Realtime, it would be nice to see it in action compared to unity and unreal's shader graph
Be getting back into Unity. And could use more knowledge about shaders. Mostly for this new project I want to make. Don't know much about shaders in general, other than they help with how things get displayed on screen, despite I have dabbled with them before. And something called compute shaders can be real handy. I already have Shader Sandwich for Unity. And UNOShader UNLIT. Just to name two. Neither up to date, and may not work with Unity 6. I may get Amplify Shader Editor. It does cost a lot, but some say it's real good, and seems fairly up to date. But I think what you have to show, will be quite useful to know.
I would suggest to make the thumbnails better. There is too much text on it. Just 1 simple text with a big image of the shader that is being made would be good. Helps to glance around the channel.
One of the best shader/material teachers here on UA-cam.
Thanks!
For sure
This channel deserves to be boosted, very great content! Keep up the good work Ben!
One of the best teachers on UA-cam 🎉🎉
Very kind, thanks!
Incredible resource!! Your work will go down in game dev history no doubt

This channel is an absolute goldmine, really appreciate your work
you are an amazing mentor! keep up the good work
Thank you!
I'll double that, no other channel offers such in-depth explanation, no other mentor boosted my shader skill that much
I'm still surprised at how sane you are when you learn so much that information. You're the best!
I have learn so much from you, thanks a lot Ben.
Happy to hear that!

I feel nothing but joy whenever I see you posted a new video! Love your work! Thanks for sharing your awesome knowledge!
You were one of the people who gave me hope that it's okay to pursue design and development. And it's paying off in terms of "satisfaction".
So glad to hear it!
Ben thank you for this gold of knowledge for shaders! Love how u explain everything! Ur a gem to the game dev community! ❤😊

Thank you)

a career series could be interesting. talking about the industry, challenges and interesting projects you have worked on, tips for juniors, etc.
感谢!我看过视频介绍中的每一集!
Benjamin you are so goated it's crazy
Ben, i was wondering if you knew how to set up a 6 point light shader? I'd love to learn how to do this. Future idea for a video. Many thanks.

cryengine requires you to code shaders, it doesn't have a visual scripting graph like unity and unreal.

I have a future video planned on shader optimization, but it's not specific to mobile or Unreal although it will definitely apply to both.

Why would anyone dislike this video? are they disliking it because they expect it to be a tutorial or what 😅?
Maybe because the video is shameless self-promotion rather than actual content? :0D
