I’ve been a Maya animator for 25 years since 1.0. A few months back my 16 yr old son started learning Blender so I started donating on an automatic monthly mode. I too jumped along and dedicated November to Blender from my year long Unreal Engine learning adventure and was so fascinated by it for animation that I decided to switch. I bought a handful of addons and are set to increase my donations starting in January. Btw, it was odd to see so many add on makers not sharing a single dime of their Blender add on sales. I for one decided to only buy Blender Foundation-supporting add on makers after seeing Tom’s speech a month ago. Btw, my 16yr old son landed his first job modeling shoes for a film in Blender so I will support Blender as long as I can just for making this beautifully unexpected surprise happen together with my son’s love and dedication of course. Blender rocks!!
I have used Cinema 4D since 2006 so the old projects are not compatible with Blender. It is just another tool for 3d and maybe new artist adapt it more easily.
This never happened. You sir are a liar. Lets take one thing out of your comment - you were fascinated by its animation. You either were poor animator in Maya, or.. Well, i can not think of one thing that Blender handles better in animation than Maya. So again - you are lying.
You had me at "Blender needs help" lolol Honestly, I only started really playing with Blender this year but I've been following them for over a decade or more. Blender should start considering to go local, some country like Indonesia (who famous for charity attitude) had many Blender user but can't donate because limitation of payment methode, many of them don't speak English too, so approach locally is very important strategies
i think the problem with limitation of payment method can be solved by helping out each other. assuming exchanging money locally isn’t the problem and it’s the international payment that’s the obstacle, one person with no paypal/credit card can transfer their donation to another with access to the proper payment methods, who then direct it to blender. but ig this is more easily said than done.

I've done 3d model a long time ago. When 3d studio for DOS came out.. I know, I know, I'm old. Then I went to code and design and do all kinds of different things but left my 3d passion behind. 25 years later, having the experience in everything else I decided to get back to 3d because it was always my dream to make a quality game. So I started learning Unreal Engine and decided to go Blender after several unsuccessful tries over the years (let's be honest, Blender wasn't ready then), I started using Blender since 3.4 and I immediately started supporting them. Paying monthly because I was blown away. I have never been more impressed with growth of a specific software in all my design/engineering career. Blender needs funding, if we all pitch in, I am 300% certain it will be the number 1 3D software in the industry. Something I never thought I would say. The speed of improvements and new features coming in a few years Blender might completely fly pass Maya, 3DS Max and everything else on the market. It would indeed be the first time in my life that open source software beats every commercial software on the market, and Blender has the potential to do it. Now wouldn't that be a wonderful thing.
With respect for your age. But think carefully. Which multi-billion dollar business would quietly and humbly give up its dominant position in the world, and easily part with its piece of the pie? The closer the blender gets to technical perfection, the more it becomes a real threat to those who used to think their dominance was just, the more disgruntled eyes are directed towards the blender, the bigger and stronger the opposition will be so that your (and my) thoughts of a wonderful possible future for the blender may not be destined to come true. Blender is already good enough, it has begun to penetrate the big industry, it has begun to displace those who have long occupied it (or at least begun to threaten to displace them), this means that hard times have begun for blender. Times when any meanness and lowliness is possible, from banal black PR, to bribing key programmers (so that they would delay development by imitating vigorous activity) or something even worse that you don't even want to think about...
I donated to Blender for the first time just from watching this video. Right now I don't use Blender for animation, but I do use it for making 3D print models.
If Blender becomes industry compatible, so many people could break into the 3D animation industry with self-taught skills. That means more talented artists will be favoured, rather than artists who happen to be fortunate enough to pay for programs like Maya
I had no idea they were struggling financially. I started using it back in 2022, I’d always wanted to get into 3D modeling and animation but never found a real reason to do it until a University assignment me the oppertunity to do it. At the time I was (understandably) skeptical about Blender as it was classified as a free and open source software - my impression being it was going to be a bit janky, but it was free. And because it remained free I still use it nowdays and absolutely love it - lately I use it for modeling 3D prints (as far as I can tell, Blender is the perfect software for being able to make very technical prints and artistic ones at the same time if you set up correctly, I’ve also become very acustomed to Blender and don’t want to use another software lol). In retrospect, I’m very impressed that Blender has committed itself to remaining free and accessible to everyone instead of using an obligatory subscription model or putting updates behind a paywall. I appreciate you bringing awareness to this matter, I may make a donation to show support (can’t unfortunately do a sizable amount but every bit counts, right?)
I don't even use blender and I just started college again at 25, so I don't really have much money laying around, but I donated a few €. I do parametric modeling so prefer fusion, but who knows what autodesk will do in the future, might turn out like Adobe, so we always need open source alternatives. Long live Blender!
It's nice of you to send the message and contribute a percentage of your income. I wish other UA-camrs who benefit from Blender would do the same. Blender is a wonderful product and has a great community. Keep it going! Also, it would be nice if Blender added a button on the software UI for donations. It would be a good reminder for those enjoying the product.

I’m still sticking to Blender today and now that I finally am slowely growing my income after all these years I want to donate some money to blender as my thanks and appreciation for it being a free open source product for people like me.
I have beyond absolutely so much respect for what the Blender team has done, I will do everything I can to help. I had a feeling they were struggling, which makes me sad, but I know this will change, and the change is not far away.
The best thing about blender is that even if it does goes bankrupt we will all still benefit from the software forever, because anyone can distribute it. We should all do our best to support the foundation, but Blender itself will never die, that is the beauty of open source
@Likemea everything comes with a cost. It's sad that AI might overtake art community but you cannot dismiss it's benefits. Every day use to auto car to medical situations.
If it wasn't for Blender, I'm not sure I would have gotten into 3D. Thanks to Blender, I've found a hobby that I love. Let's all do our part to make Blender even better!
I absolutely adore Blender, but the only reason I don't use it as consistently as I want to is the lack of UV tools! Being able to stack, lock, and easily more manipulate UVs is my primary concern for everyday use. I recognize that there are addons to fix this but I worry about relying on too many addons because of support. If blender fixed this and addded so better snapping and edge flow editing, I would be 100% use fore me.

Blender would instantly get 100-150x the support... the moment it unfucked its ui, defaults and tooltips (at least to the level of its non-private forks), instead of being barely better out of the box yet take twice as long as setting up ancient relics e.g. 07 Zbrush that still has drastically better performance and light rendering for the tasks at hand. Not to mention to not chase away people like the ones that actually gave blender a real sculpt mode compared to the initial sculpt mode (up to 2.6 or whenever) even if still lacking multirez, instead of only having one on paper for the sake of claiming it has features (like the 2d drawing options of blender) yet with the strength and practicality of trying to use a 8cm toy plastic spoon as a sledgehammer.

That’s a really cool story! Thanks for your generous support.
i agree about the add-on creators! They turning a profit on a free software, but how many of them actually give back?
I have used Cinema 4D since 2006 so the old projects are not compatible with Blender. It is just another tool for 3d and maybe new artist adapt it more easily.
It's great to hear that a professional Maya animator is making the switch to Blender! As a pro, which add-ons have you purchased?
This never happened. You sir are a liar.
Lets take one thing out of your comment - you were fascinated by its animation. You either were poor animator in Maya, or.. Well, i can not think of one thing that Blender handles better in animation than Maya.
So again - you are lying.
dude, at 2:42; the like button actually glows for me. Is youtube listening to what we're saying now ?
Yes, same if you say subscribe
UA-cam has always been listening to the video, that's the reason why you have auto transcript.

Awesome! Thank you!
Blender should start considering to go local, some country like Indonesia (who famous for charity attitude) had many Blender user but can't donate because limitation of payment methode, many of them don't speak English too, so approach locally is very important strategies
That's something I hadn't even thought about. Great point
However this means having translators, either volunteers or contractors/employees. For each languages in which they translate.
@@18earendilironic comment given the video topic but they could try first translation with free tools 😅
i think the problem with limitation of payment method can be solved by helping out each other. assuming exchanging money locally isn’t the problem and it’s the international payment that’s the obstacle, one person with no paypal/credit card can transfer their donation to another with access to the proper payment methods, who then direct it to blender. but ig this is more easily said than done.
Do not underestimate the white elephants, the scammers.
maya got 5B, but still couldnt afford to fix its rotation gizmo

@@Metarig Because with a worsening economy people can't really afford many subscription fees anymore. Plus, just because they can afford some things doesn't mean that they can afford others. @@slavsit7600 I'm not talking about people who are unsure if they want to do 3D; I mean determined individuals who invest time to learn and pursue it as a career to earn money. @@pepperfyves I'm suggesting people cut out unnecessary expenses like Netflix or trips to Disneyland for a year and save the $25 per month to pay for the software. Those who just want to have fun with it shouldn’t confuse or mislead people who are serious about building a career and need the software for professional use.

Just became a Silver Member and have noticed a quadrupling in today's donations (probably due to this video).
Awesome job, love this community.
You love a community that lets dozens of open source projects die of money starvation simply because no popular UA-camr promoted them?
Blender improvements are something other programs already have, and probably have better. Blender still doing catching up game.
I donated to Blender for the first time just from watching this video.
Right now I don't use Blender for animation, but I do use it for making 3D print models.

I started donating 5 usd per month because I Iove the software, the community and the developers behind it.

Me too
Almost unbelievable that Blender is free it's soo good. Certainly needs more love.
If Blender becomes industry compatible, so many people could break into the 3D animation industry with self-taught skills.
That means more talented artists will be favoured, rather than artists who happen to be fortunate enough to pay for programs like Maya
Let's make this video popular so that we can make our favourite 3d software free forever 😢
