- Sagar Shah is the founder of ChessBase India, a trainer, organiser and author. He is a regular guest at top tournaments around the world and has made countless videos filming chess events and interviewing top players and organisers.
But during a visit to the ChessBase studio he changed roles and was interviewed. He talked to Johannes Fischer about his enthusiasm for chess, his chess career, his chess wedding and revealed why he is so fascinated by mountain climbing.

If anand is the father of indian chess, then sagar bhai is definitely the big brother of indian chess 😅
If Anand is the father of Indian chess, Don Shah is the Godfather
naughty shah is illegitimate child of chess
One of the major reason of me watching chess is Sagar bhai. Thanks for inspiring people back in India
Huge credits to Johannes for asking the right questions (just by being curious, haha). There are several other Sagar interviews by now, but the curiosity of the interviewer(s) was lacking in many of them. Amazing interview.
Sagar bhai you are a true inspiration ❤
Sagar bhai is love for us ❤
I believe Mr Sagar is the person who brings a new attraction to Indian Chess. I got so many benefits from ChessBase India by purchasing original products for affordable prices. Otherwise, it is hard for us as south Asians. Wish you all the best and Good Luck!
What an amazing human being. Also a very gentle aura.
Sagar's love for chess is so evident
I came across a passage from Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance that seems to shed some light on the pull Sagar has for mountain climbing. "The allegory of a physical mountain for the spiritual one that stands between each soul and its goal is an easy and natural one to make. Like those in the valley behind us, most people stand in sight of the spiritual mountains all their lives and never enter them, being content to listen to others who have been there and thus avoid the hardships. Some travel into the mountains accompanied by experienced guides who know the best and least dangerous routes by which they arrive at their destination. Still others, inexperienced and untrusting, attempt to make their own routes. Few of these are successful, but occasionally some, by sheer will and luck and grace, do make it. Once there they become more aware than any of the others that there’s no single or fixed number of routes. There are as many routes as there are individual souls." The last bit about uncountable routes also seems to suggest deep uncertainty-some things can be assessed only in hindsight (also mirrored in the story Sagar narrates at the end). Fascinating stuff.
damn!! just 20 minutes into the interview but I already feel there is lot to learn here and not just for chess players. Clearly the wisdom sagar gained from books and experiences speaks through him. Questions and answers both are nice!!
