This is so true! For years I thought I just couldn't sing in tune and I would be stuck with it forever if not for your courses. I cannot express how thankful I am.
You're a legend Chris! Gotta follow the harmonic/resonant pathways. I feel like the pitch centering/placement adjustment is super easy to pick up on when whistling - like you can whistle a pitch but sometimes it feels like you're reaching for it, whereas if it's centered you have the right tension in the right muscles of your face/throat/mouth and no air is wasted... the note is projected strongly but it feels like you used less energy to do it. The breakpoints of the different registers are tough to get around. Great vid my dude, been meaning to take some lessons with you but time/money have been factors. Wish you had more vids on harmony, since I find it difficult to not sing the unison when I hear something. Thanks for the reminder on monitoring, especially as a lower baritone.

This is solid advice. I struggle constantly with swallowing my notes and not many people seem to address the issue, its frustrating. I still struggle with this issue but have discovered the bringing the sound forward, there is a resonance sweet spot where everything opens up, sometimes when i’m singing through a song I will repeat to myself sing like your talking sing like your talking, idk why it works sometimes but it does.
I have the exact same problems. My throat tightens when I sing E’s.
@@adamlindall3208 i’ve definitely noticed that there are certain notes around “transition” points that produce more tension in my voice and are super important to place correctly, if the placement is off on those it destabilizes the notes around them. D4 A3 weirdly A4 is another E4 and F4 fall apart if I’m tense on my D4.
Wow, Chris, this is so cool. My pitch keeps getting better but I still struggle w/ being flat. I've been smiling away like an idiot with no real consistent change. I never thought about changing placement for pitch. This is such a great new variable. Thanks man. Since being in your classes, I've seen such a huge difference in my tone, range and overall sound. I just recorded myself on three songs and WOW! What a difference already. Now I can tweak the pitches that were flat. Thanks!! so so helpful.

I had and still have quiet trouble with pitch as a routined homestudio singer using headphones now singing a band, hearing myself through the PA... :-/ Now I bought a small PA system a cheap dynamic mic, play around. I really recommend this... Hearing yourself through PA speakers is very different than headphones... in my opinion...

I play guitar for 16 years and I have not bad ear. I mix and master music.
But I suffer with singing. And problem is pitch.
I need time to adjust my voice to pitch.

I think a big part of what the placement does is help us "hear" the note better via resonance, or via feel I guess. Having it forward and bright like that creates a better connection with the ear, gives it more treble, does "something" that helps the ear kind of pick up on the mistake, that it then just instinctively corrects.

Hmm i think i actually have pitch problems because i *think* I have a forward placement a lot but i still am unable to be on pitch when singing. And the sucky problem is I find it hard to focus on comparing my sound to the music/original singer so I can't tell if im flat or sharp much but if someone points it out i can hear it clearly. Or for instance if my guitar is flat or sharp by 15-20 cents I can tell easily but i struggle to make my mind to do the comparison with my voice.
I will keep this advice in mind because it's possible I'm wrong and this really is the problem. I think i may just not have th control developed yet and not being able to focus on it and hear it makes it harder to consciously make better.

My first serious instruction came from Roger Love's materials. He's coached many Pop stars, so figured he was reasonably qualified.
He strongly drives home that singers should try to drop their larynx as much as possible. The understanding I got at the time was it avoided nasal sound, and made it easier to sing runs. I practiced "gug gug gug" and similar a lot, trying to make it a habit. It seemed to help. I stopped feeling tight, or like I was straining to hit notes, particularly middle voice notes, but still feel I'm always just a tiny bit flat or sharp.
I've watched lots of your videos, and your demonstrations back up what you say. Is Roger wrong? Is he right in terms of it being a good loosening process, but not a good way to sing normally?
I want to sound like Frank Sinatra, Norah Jones or Mel Torme not exactly like them but in that style. Especially how incredibly effortless their voices are and how effortless it seems when you listen to them about them staying exactly on pitch. Frank especially was closer to pitch than autotune can do as autotune can only put you in equal temperment. No distortion but that was the style of the time. Both Frank and Norah keep the same placement all the time but Mel always varied his placement.
Chris, amazing video, however I and other singer wannabes who are their best at singing that I talked to, we all have a bit different issue.
Of course, being confident in singing on pitch is important, but to be honest my biggest problem is not if I am singing on pitch, but what pitch am i even supossed to sing at.
Like, if i want to sing let's say Mad World by Gary Jules. I don't really know what pitch am I supossed to even target, because i don't know what pitch he is singing at if that makes sense. How do I know what pitches to even sing? Sometimes I find vocal notation online, and I can work my way from there, but that's not possible for every song.
Coul you maybe in a future do something like "How to learn a song from ground up", where you walk us through how you learn songs from the basic on what range is he/she singing at and then trying to reproduce the pitch etc.

What if I want to swallow and darken the notes I'm singing? 😋 Could accuracy still be achieved? I love singing lower passages with that yawny swallowed sound. Haven't encountered problems with that too much. I could try it with a tuner, though, and see how it influences pitch.
Yes, it is absolutely possible to shape the sound for a darker, mellower sound and still place the sound in a way that doesn't draw you flat. I have LOTS of exercises for this in my course Discover Your Voice!

I've noticed that singing, strumming, and plucking a bass (all on the same note) sounds boring.
Use all the instruments to help shape the chords of the song.
