      Erik Anderson I myself have been wanting to try segmented turning but haven’t mustered up the courage as it were. Have to build a wedgie sled first though.

    • @ErikAnderson1
      @ErikAnderson1  6 років тому

      You can do it without the wedgie sled, I did many segmented turnings before ever having a wedgie sled. Watch the segmented turner, and other segmenting videos there are always tricks for using the tools you have. Kyle Toth has no wedgies sled and makes amazing segments. Malcolm Tibbets Tahoe Woodturner, out of this world crazy master segmenter, no wedgie sled. Be you and try your own path and see where it leads you!

    Wow.....beautiful ❤️
    I’m impressed how your scraper peels the wood. I ground mine to negative rake and haven’t been able to get an edge on it since.

    • @ErikAnderson1
      @ErikAnderson1  6 років тому

      Thanks Frank, no negative rake on this one but I get a good burr edge and this one works pretty well. You may have heated the steel up too much in re-grinding the negative rake and blued it and softened the steel. This can be fixed, look up re-tempering steel and you might be able to help the tool get a harder edge which you can get and hold a burr or sharp edge on. Hope that helps.

      @fcsturningwoodcraft2933 6 років тому +1

      Thank for the reply. I will take them to work and re temper them. Hopefully that will do the trick.

      Yeah me to. I’ve just thought of something. I have a tormek system and the wheel turns away from me where as most grinders turn towards the operator. I’m having trouble keeping the tool flat on the table....keeps wanting to lift up. I’m going to try and mount the holding system on the opposite side so it will behave like a regular grinder.....wish me luck. Lol

    G,OM, Eric. That's stunning. At first, I'm all, "What's the point of a segmented turning with all one species?" Then, you applied your finish, and I'm all, "Wow! That thing went 'seven kinds of three-d', dinnit?" Eye-popping. Magical.

    • @ErikAnderson1

      Thank you Mark! I have been stunned in the past by single wood segmented pieces and this one was no different, the wood naked and oiled only makes for a beautiful piece of art.

    Erik that is the second biggest salad bowl I’ve ever seen??? Okay, well maybe the biggest, and the best. You did a stunning job. I’m midway through putting together a segmented bowl and I didn’t use a jig like yourself and I’ve had nothing but problems...agghhhhh. Keep up the good work! Cheers Sean

    Very good. Walnut sure does shine up nice. What is the wall thickness? Can you provide a link to the Yorkshire Grit and the Walnut Oil you use?

    • @ErikAnderson1
      @ErikAnderson1  6 років тому

      Thanks Glen I use walnut oil from the grocery store in salad dressing and oil aisle cheapest kind I can find and yorkshire-grit.com/ is a place to start

  • @gilgrace1915

    I love the look that segmenting gives. With the grain in the Walnut the inside of the bowl looks a little like "Tuck and Roll" upholstery...oops did I just date myself? LOL!
    Thanks for the good tip on flattening the rings without a drum sander, I'll give it a try.

    • @ErikAnderson1

      Thanks Gil, glad you liked the video and I hope you like the sanding trick. Nice tuck and roll always looks so great. We are getting older and that's just fine, except all the pains.

  • @Katzztar

    ITs a wonderful piece. Unfortunately the sound is whacked. We can hear the scraping fine but when you talk, its mumbled and too low. I can't hear what you were saying. If I turned it up to do so, then when you returned to scraping, it was too loud so I decided not to turn it up. Did you have a mic malfunction or was not facing it?

    One of my patients has a question: what do you do with all of the shavings? Burn them, trash them, make scented satchels (walnut especially), garden soil additives?

    • @ErikAnderson1

    Looks great! Question: do you wear ear protection when turning?

    • @ErikAnderson1
      @ErikAnderson1  6 років тому +1

      Great question Mr, Taco 250, Rarely as I like to listen to the sound of the wood, it can let you know if there is a weak spot or a large splinter about to fly off and it tells you when you are getting thin!

  • @scottconstable2352

    Do you use any kind of sanding sealer before the Yorkshire Grit? I have seen a lot of people do so, but assume it would not allow for the absorption of your butcher block conditioner (or Walnut Oil, as you also said you like to use). Beautiful piece.

    • @ErikAnderson1
      @ErikAnderson1  6 років тому

      Thanks Scott! On this piece I did not but on other pieces I do use a sealer first, just depends on the wood and my mood!

    Eric, I love your work but man I can't hear you at all.

    • @ErikAnderson1
      @ErikAnderson1  6 років тому

      I am very sorry Brian. I do not have good way for me to record sound and at times I will dub in some important stuff but I really feel like most of what needs to be conveyed can be seen and if it is really important I will try to take the time to point stuff out. I have less time lately and it is hard for me to shoot quality video and sound using my camera on my phone but I am trying. Thanks for the input and I will keep your comment in mind when shooting and editing. Thanks again Brian!

    I heard you mention wet sanding. What do you use to wet sand with?

    • @ErikAnderson1
      @ErikAnderson1  6 років тому

      Good question Philip, I use Yorkshire Grit or you can use walnut oil and wet dry sandpaper or make your own sanding or abrasive paste.
