😊 I'm back! A year later from when I last posted. My old tree finally died. I now have a new one my son brought me last night at a Black Friday sale at Lowe's. It's pretty good sized so it's not Bonsai material, but I may just go out looking in the next week or so for one of the little ones the stores have as little gifts to try your method.

Well, just remember, during this pandemic, barber shops and beauty salons have had to be closed! I JUST finally got my gray coloured for the first time in over 18 months two days ago! LOL!
G'day Nigel. There is a Norfolk Pine growing a few doors down from me and I just went and measured the trunk. It has a diameter of 2.14 metres or 7 feet and almost double that at the root level. It has also lifted up from ground level by about 75cm or about 2 1/2 feet, so its pretty big. I can only guess at the height - over 100 feet easy. It's a really beautiful tree with incredible trunk flair, you would love it. On another point, Norfolk Pines were planted all along the coasts of Australia in the days of the big sailing ships because of their straight trunks as a ready supply for replacement ships masts. So you see a lot on headlands and beaches all over the country. The only problem is they are no good for ships masts. Not strong enough and the tend to split or break. That's why you still see them everywhere and they are really old. Anyway thanks for the video and Bewdy Bonsaing.
Great info. Wish they were hardy enough to grow outdoors here in the UK. I do have a Wollemi Pine outdoors though.

This forest fascinates me. It’s starting to show it’s promise. The naysayers can start eating their words. I commented on a previous Norfolk video that I also was told that Auracaria trees can’t be pruned or topped and that their cuttings won’t root. Then one day I saw that a Norfolk in a car sales showroom had been topped and the large top cutting had been rooted and was growing away. I was extremely surprised! ~ Plants have a strong will to survive and grow. Some ‘rules’ of care and culture cannot be broken or the plant might suffer greatly and even perish, like one can’t leave a tropical plant exposed to bitter cold for long or it will freeze. That said, there are endless examples of people pushing the ‘envelope’ of conditions that a plant can not only tolerate but can thrive under. When I previously grew orchids I broke many ‘rules’ regarding the conditions and care that I provided. Most of the plants did fine anyhow. Rules are often written with the circumstances of the authors having undo influence on what’s being recommended. By example an orchid grower in London, U.K. will claim that a certain temperature range is good for a particular species. A grower in Florida of the same species quite likely will swear by a different range of temperatures. Both are following the ‘so called ‘rules’. Anyhow, it’s fun to see you toss the ‘rule book’ aside with this and some of your other bonsai and just get on with experimenting and enjoying the hobby.

I really like your Norfolk forest. It has an ethereal quality... i expect to see drifts of mist and the flashes of birds’ wings through the branches. Bonsai dreaming...! They do get pruned and the tops cut off around here and survive really well , I’m too scared to actually prune mine because they cost so much to buy , I do love this family of trees 🌲

nice. In the very Southeast U.S. the Norfolks get tall fast. I had one, about 50' or so, taken out by a hurricane. It was one of my babies. Down in Miami they're larger and taller. Some areas have banned them due to storms blowing them over and falling on other peoples houses, etc. Your video has inspired me to try this forest too.

I just bought a pot of Norfolk island pine today. There are 4 pencil thick stems and one really little one. I'm liking the idea of trying to make a bonsai since I have more than one plant to work with. Definitely have to go through your video library to get the necessary info on getting started
I’ve always loved this composition. I’m Giving them another go after killing my initial attempt a few year back. Picked up a group of 7 at Home Depot for $10. YIKES! Those roots were a spaghetti of tap roots. Repotted, pruned and fingers crossed 🤞🏻Thanks, keep growing

It is nice to the the development of these unusual species. I see that everyone has an opinion about what to do, etc, but not based on knowledge or experience... too bad.... I am glad that you do your own experiments... I do that too 😉 It is the Dunning-Kruger effect... let's get more knowledge...

Could you please do a video on getting the cuttings to root? I have a large old Norfolk Island Pine in a pot that's been growing for well over 12 years now. The lower branches gradually died off and the thing is tall and looks absolutely ridiculous and top heavy. I'd like to do some cutting on it to make it into other smaller trees to start over again but am not sure where to start.

After seeing one of your previous videos in this series I bought one Norfolk pine about a year ago but never got around to replanting our pruning, maybe because I wanted to see how they grew first (indoors). But they haven't really changed at all. Still looking like an inverted triangle (not nice!) They have what looks like shoots at the top but nothing has happened there. What's the next step to make them come alive? Prune off the top? Replanting in bonsai substrate?
Repot in a well-draining soil, fertilize, put the tree in a sunny place, and then sit back. Completely soak the pot whenever the top inch or two of soil feels dry.
I purchased a small pot of 5 Norfolk pines and want to make it into a forest bonsai as you describe. Should I root prune and replant in bonsai soil/pot first or trim the top and then do root work later in the year?

I just got a norfolk pine and i was wondering when can i start reducing It’s hight with hard pruning? Do have to wait a year? or is it best to be quick with this?
If the tree is healthy and in good growing conditions, you should be able to start pruning. The danger is when you buy a tree from a nice greenhouse, bring it home where it gets less light, prune it and then the tree has a hard time recovering. If you have it in a nice bright window, it should make the transition OK. It might be best to do more of a light prune and see how the tree reacts before diving in on hard pruning! The hard pruning might work, but it is more risky.

why is mine browning at the bottom/ on some leaves? i water it perfectly and give it enough sun! i even made sure it’s nowhere near my heater and has humidity (w my humidifier and misting) IDK WHAT IM DOING WRONG
I received a very small Norfolk Pine in 2010. Since that time it has grown about 6 ft tall. Now I have two shoots that have grown on either side. They are about 4 ft. Will I be able to separate them as getting too talk. They are starting to not look as good.

I would rec not pruning tops and bottoms(roots) at sametime. Roots send hormones to the top, and tops send hormones down. By doing both at the sametime you slow recovery and growth. Thanks for many hours of knoweledge, and inspiration.
Someone gave me one of these bout 15 years old in a huge pot. It's about 16 foot tall . I've always had the idea to chop it down to make it more manageable but I'm worried it will die . I live in Florida and they grow in the ground everywhere but none are ever good examples of a trunk chop . What do you think
