Top Mount Subwoofer Front Kerfed Ported Plywood Box - DIY

  • Custom-made subwoofer box for a client's JBL S3-1224 subwoofer, to be installed and fitted within Hyundai Sonata's limited trunk space height. So I designed the box low and flat. To make this happen, the subwoofer must be mounted on top while the kerfed slot port is front firing. Making the subwoofer slightly forward and off center at the top baffle where it sits.
    Here are the project highlights:
    00:00 - Bass Box Pro and WinISD calculated enclosure resonance is 30Hz
    00:25 - FREE schematics to TinkerCad - www.tinkercad.com/things/1rmW...
    00:58 - Shopping for a sheet of mighty expensive Santa Clara marine plywood. I will never buy this again. Ever.
    01:40 - I doubled the top baffle so I can cut a flush mounting for the subwoofer driver.
    02:40 - Upper panels were secured by glue and pocket hole screws at the internal side.
    03:40 - Perfect 90 degree kerf cut! 12 kerf cuts with 10mm distance interval. "No nails" all purpose adhesive makes the kerfs bent 90 degree rock solid.
    06:45 - All edges were rounded by a chamfer router bit.
    07:30 - Dark walnut oil wood stain topped with clear gloss lacquer.
    10:10 - Final enclosure resonance verified at 22Hz using Dayton Audio DATS v3.
    I think that's it for today's subwoofer build. And of course I ended up testing the system with a 10-100Hz tone sweep and a heavy bass hiphop track at the end. I hope you all enjoy this another episode of Charcoal Monkey's DIY subwoofer boxes!

    That came out fantastic.
    Kerfed ports are difficult but always worth it. They beat cleaner and tighter, I think.
    Aeroport assemblies and kerfed slots are super versatile.
    Nice work man.

    Thanks for sharing the video and the information! Very useful (and entertaining with your lovely dogs running around). Excuse me if you already answered this question but what is the radius of the bended part of the port at the front and did you change the total port length? I have read that when using a (large) flange the outer part of the "mouth" shouldn't be used for determining the total length of the port. Ps. Could you also share the dimensions of the box? Tia.!

    • @chrclmnky
      @chrclmnky  3 роки тому

      Many thanks for such inspiring feedback. Curve radius is 12" (outside dimension). There are exactly 12 kerf cuts with 10mm interval. Flanges and such don't really matter to me when calculating. All I do is to measure inner dimensions minus all the displacements when calculating boxes into BassBox Pro and WinISD.

    I am a JBL Fanatic, I just got the Partybox 310 and have had their Endurance Sprint Bluetooth Headphones and am blown away by the Sound Quality that JBL Produces. How do you say that Sub sounds overall? Is it loud enough for you? I'm thinking of doing 2 of them in a Ground Shaker 30Hz Enclosure.... If not I'm getting the new Alpine Type X. Just curious on your honest opinion after having owned it and listened to it for a while now? Are you satisfied or would you say it's not quite loud enough, being it only Produces 500 Watts RMS VS The Kicker L7 & Alpine Type X that produce 800-1200 Watts RMS?...

    Hi! I'm still a noob in speaker design and not even a native English speaker. I have in plan to buy the same speaker due to its performance and linearity. I already did a bunch of simulations, and I come with a box that has around 3.53ft^3, tunned at 24Hz, and a very flat response. My question is: is there any reason you chose 2.218ft^3 other than space? What about air velocity (I have a max at 28m/s)? But Cone excursion? Mine is excited at 13mm - 500W, but I don't plan to use it at this power. At 400W excites 12mm at 21.5Hz

      Hello Damian, you have done a good work on your enclosure simulation. I should have turned this one at about 30Hz for a balanced response but somewhat miscalculated the port area that is why the overall tuning ended up way lower which is 22Hz.

    ¿Do you recommend putting cotton wadding on the internal walls of the acoustic box? People have told me that it can sound better for ventilated and sealed boxes. I would appreciate the response... Good video 👍🏼

      Yes adding polyfiber fill on inner panels dampen the internal resonance promoting lower tuning. But you have to put just the right amount or else your subwoofer will bottom out.

    Man that box is fresh .. what size of screws do u use with the kregs jig ... and whats the name of the Stan u use

      @chrclmnky  3 роки тому

      Thanks. I used 1¼" screws for the pocket holes. And I used dark walnut oil wood stain. To achieve darker color, mix a lamp black tinting color into a can of oil wood stain.
