    =================
    SYNOPSIS:
    1474 was a critical year for the Reconquista. While the Christian kingdoms held supremacy over Iberia, the Nasrid held on in Granada. Castile at this time had descended into a new dark age. It was impoverished and on the brink of civil war. However, with the death of King Henry IV, it was now time for a new sovereign to take the stage.

    “Even in Spain the memory of the Crusade was growing faint, and the rest of Europe had almost forgotten it. Though the crescent moved westward and Constantinople fell, though the Turk threatened Hungary and raided the Italian coast, no Christian banner stirred. Defence against the Turk was merely a phrase that embellished treaties and declarations.
    But to Isabella the Crusade was as real as it had been to Saint Bernard. Ferdinand might seek power; she sought the glory of God.”

      Three popes at the time of and in the years after the fall of Constantinople, tried to organize Crusade to retake the city.
      "In November 1463, Pope Pius II tried to organize the crusade against the Ottomans, similar to what Nicholas V and Calixtus III had tried to do before him. Pius II invited all the Christian nobility to join, and the Venetians immediately answered the appeal. So did George Kastriot Skanderbeg the leader of Albanian resistance, who on 27 November 1463 declared war on the Ottomans and attacked their forces near Ohrid. Pius II's planned crusade envisioned assembling 20,000 soldiers in Taranto, and another 20,000 would be gathered by Skanderbeg. They would have been marshaled in Durazzo under Skanderbeg's leadership and would have formed the central front against the Ottomans.
      Pius II succeeded in reconciling the Emperor and the King of Hungary and derived great encouragement as well as pecuniary advantage from the discovery of mines of alum in the papal territory at Tolfa. However, France was estranged; the Duke of Burgundy broke his positive promises; Milan was engrossed with the attempt to seize Genoa; Florence cynically advised the Pope to let the Turks and the Venetians wear each other out. Pius II was aware that he was nearing his end, and his malady probably prompted the feverish impatience with which on 18 June 1464 he assumed the cross and departed for Ancona to conduct the crusade in person.
      In spite of suffering from a fever, Pope Pius II left Rome for Ancona in the hope of increasing the morale of the crusading army. However, the crusading army melted away at Ancona for want of transport, and when at last the Venetian fleet arrived, the dying Pope could only view it from a window."

      People who get pissy about Isabel and Ferdinand kicking Muslims out of Spain are too stupid to understand the context of the time. In the century in which Isabel lived, the Eastern Roman Empire had fallen to Islam, this was a total religious war, you can't just have a bunch of people paying lip service to you while practicing the religion of the enemy sitting ready in case the Muslims made another push into Iberia. Pushing out the Jewish and Muslim peoples was designed to secure Spain, it was not because they were assholes or evil. Isabel and Ferdinand had both seen kingdoms die upon death, fracture, and weaken, but due to Muslim pressures, they both worked to try and make sure that could not happen to Spain. Part of the way they did that was via laws, another part was infrastructure, and more, Religious unity.

      They were the two great powers at the moment, and their rivalry for control of the Mediterranean and above all for religion made them confront each other in the battle of Lepanto "the highest occasion that men have seen" according to cervantes. In Spain there are many joint histories with the Ottoman Empire

      @caniconcananas7687 Рік тому

      Not Spain, but Castile. You must see that Castile was a state, a kingdom with a place in Spain, that is a country, not a state.
      When the Phoenicians arrived a thousand years BC they named Hispania the whole land, the entire peninsula from Gibraltar Strait to the Pyrenees Mountains. And then there was not a single state, but many tribes, a few of them Iberians, other Celtiberians, some Celts and so on. In 218 BC the Romans arrived to attack the main economic base of the Carthaginians, who were descendants and successors of the Phoenicians. And the Romans used the same name, Hispania. Not Iberia.
      During the Middle Age there were many states on Hispania: The kingdoms of Castilla, León, Galicia, Sevilla, Toledo, Navarra, Aragón, Sobrarbe, Valencia, Mallorca, Jaén, Granada, Portugal, Artajona, Albarracín, etc, etc, etc. And also the county of Barcelona, with a count that had no king upon him, so being a monarch, as the founder and feudal sovereing of the several Catalonian counties (even Aragón was born as a county under Frank rule) was the king of the Franks and Emperor Charlemagne, but a later Frank king forgot to claim all those Spanish counties because he was busy at other place.
      And yes, the kingdom of Portugal was created in a country called Spain.
      The problem making us to confuse the current kingdom of Spain with the land named Spain, the whole peninsula, for the last three thousands years is the arrival of the French Bourbon dinasty to Spain and their centralization of the several states with their own parliaments and laws into a single state with a single parliament that the Bourbon kings did not use to summon but to make the oath of allegiance to the successor of the king, so acting as a tyrant.
      That and also the laziness of non Spanish diplomats and politicians to even try to understand the complexity of having several different peoples in the same country, several states in the same country, several countries in a huge piece of land called Spain. You can see this problem even today, when US politicians don't identify properly the countries they think they are hostile to the USA, like G.W. Bush during an interview during the elections which took him to the White House for the first time.
      The final push was the Romanticism in the 19th century, which was used to extend falsely into the past the Nationalism used by the bourgeoisie to use the people's power against the people, as they couldn't use the religion as the Middle Age kings had done, claiming themselves annointed by God, some of them even descendants of Christ (imitating the Muslim capliphs and emirs or kings). So, the Romantic / Nationalist lies try to identify old peoples and states with the current ones. Even Hitler used History against the Germans, with parades of people disguised as Middle Age knights.
      By the way, I strongly doubt that during the Middle Age a princess, the daughter of a king, like Isabela of Castile, had a good opinion of Joan of Arc, a lowly born person, daughter of a peasant, telling stories about visions of God which took them to be condemned by the French Inquisition to be burn at the stake.
      AHAHA !!!!
      Nobody expects the French Inquisition!
      🤣🤣🤣🤣

      Et quand les Romains ont conquis la péninsule IBÉRIQUE il lui ont donné le nom de HISPANIA , cet les Romains qui il lui ont donné le nom , et pas comme vous dites les CARTHAGINOIS cet FAUX

    I loved this superb video. I am also very thankful for the images you portrayed of my town, Segovia. I would just like to point out that the image of the cathedral in 11'20'' is actually the gothic cathedral that was built after the Comuneros revolt in 1521. The cathedral where Isabel was on her coronation day was romanesque and was destroyed during the aforementioned revolt.
    Looking forward to part II😊👏👏👏

      You're cathedral and home town are beautiful! My wife and I stayed in Madrid for two weeks and were were thinking of visiting - but we decided to go to Toledo instead and then on to Barcelona. Next time I'm definitely visiting Segovia! I couldn't find any images of what the cathedral looked like before the restoration that were of high quality. The artist I hired to create those scenes of Isabella looked as well and created the backdrop based on what we could find. You wouldn't by chance have any high resolution video of Segovia that I could use? I'd credit you in the video.

    The Queen's Vow by C. W Gortner tells the story of Isabella from childhood through the reconquest of Granada to Christopher Colombus. It is the best historical novel I have read on this era so far. Relating to this video, it goes into detail about Isabella's formative years and the events that shaped her personality; of the instability and peril of Castile prior to her coronation, and the coronation itself.
    There is also a sequel novel on the life and reign of Isabella's successor, her daughter Juana of Castile. I would recommend CW Gortner to anyone who likes historical novels. He has covered Lucrezia Borgia, Catherine de Medici, the Tudors, among others.
    Great work as always, FPH, I look forward to the next one.

    The stories of the ancient Queens of the realms in Europe in those days were always fascinating. Since they had no power, and were usually overlooked, it always was something to watch them become the name that was spoken of with reverence and awe to this day while their contemporaries all were lucky to be transcribed in the history books at all.

    The Turkish fear that spread over the mediterranean cannot be overstated. It nested into the minds of the royalty of the Peninsula, the nobility and the clergy as well in the commoners who soonly after had to face the incursion of the Barbary pirates sponsored by the Ottomans. It defined the mayor strategy of the Catholic Kings to the point that after the Reconquista they and the Cardenal Cisneros embarked in the conquest of north africa which led to the taking of Oman and Tremecens and the settling of Ceuta and Melilla.

    awesome content! also, I just realized she was the daughter of a Portuguese princess of the house of Aviz! Isabella of Portugal, beautiful and educated, she had several examples of resolve in the family tree! On a side note, not only the Spanish armies would have to deal with the Ottomans, but also de Portuguese fleets, in the Indic Ocean. The Iberic Reconquista, when finally concluded (in Portugal, it ended 200 years prior), changed the world and started an age of gold for christianity. Also, the security brought to western europe with this allowed for more resources dedicated to education and art. You cannot prosper if you country shares a border with an aggressive neighbor that raids constantly your kingdom. Look at Ukraine now. Look at eastern europe and the history of the Ottomans.
