Saw him at the last concert in Belgrade, Serbia. It was the best live act I've ever saw. He throws everything he got, loves his audience. Big respect to him and his art, and yes - I call it art :)
Poslednji koncert u Beogradu 2018 je nesto najbolje sto sam cuo u zivotu. Nisam znao dosta pesama sa Skeleton Tree albuma, a sve vreme sam se samo jezio. Fenomenalan je.

It's about a jaded cynic and an optimistic woman he likes. She tries to tell him the world is beautiful, he says it's ugly and sad. She argues that none of the stuff he complains about really affects his life at all, and there's nothing righteous about passing judgement on the rest of the world while you sit and stew in your own miseries.
He smiles at the end while she's crying because he's moved by her response.
I think he smiles also because with the last sentence she just proves his point by contradicting herself. Anyway, one of my favourite songs ever.

I love BP since 1981, lost some neurons since, but now I put Nick Cave on a pedestal: the only one which makes si powerful and sensitive music with incredible lyrics. Well as I see it its because she finally sees the world as it is and understands that he's right so that's when she cries. His smile means that he's happy that she finally gets why he cares about the people and how they treat each other and not just about the beautiful part of the world. I think because as she says "sorrow's piling up around you" she understands how Nick feels about the world and the people living in it. Because after all "People Ain't No Good"
I think the smile is there because he won the argument and religious belief no matter how hard it tries cannot change the world.
The smile is not only there for winning the argument though, I think he likes the naivety in the woman's worldview, and he loves her...maybe because of this too. In Sad Waters there is a line that goes like this "forever a hostage of your child's world". The poet, which he is, sees the darkness better, for he has explored it more fully, more realistically.

When we look at the universe as a whole we see unimaginable, breathtaking beauty but when we fixate on any one part we are overwhelmed by inexplicable, unjustifiable ugliness. When those two modes of thinking interact the transcendent perspective is brought down while the imminent perspective is elevated.

Thats how I imagine Chopin before his illness overwhelmed him. IDK I'm not an expert in any way but the way he exhausts himself in front of the audience to deliver his often said or at least very emotional message, his long dark hair and his skinny body which is dressed perfectly it all fits very well.
