Well, 'research' (a quick look at Wikipedia) suggests he believes in the possibility of God, at least; and maybe in a God but one that is not a 'personal' God (or, as per the song, an 'interventionist' God). His statements on the subject are nuanced. Possibly his views have simply evolved or changed over time. Possibly he himself is not always clear on the subject. But he does not appear to be an atheist, i.e. someone who actually denies the existence of God.
Atheists do not deny the existence of gods, but instead simply have no belief. Atheism is usually defined incorrectly as a belief system. Atheism is not a disbelief in gods or a denial of gods; it is a lack of belief in gods. There is a subtle, but important, difference. Try to understand.

Nick Cave performed this at his friend’s Michael Hutchence’s funeral after his suicide. Rest in eternal peace to Michael and everyone else so lovingly described in the comments here.
Stanislav, I dont think he's overrrated, I just think that he appeals to something in a certain type of person. People who like him feel something quite special when listening to him. Music is about communication and he has an honesty that is rare. And I really appreciate that. He's trying his best to be who he is, and thats what we all should be looking to do. We are flawed and Nick Cave is too. Bieber is trying to say that we should strive to not be flawed. Yet he so clearly is.

At this horrible time Mr Cave's song playing allows me the scope to think of past and passed loved ones and extend those thoughts to every dear soul hurting and being seperated from their own loved ones in our united unwanted situation.
Such beauty. Nick Cave is an artist in the purest sense. So many songs make me feel. Maybe it is the polar extremes of extreme violence, (Stagger Lee) or a song like this. I won't go into all the great tunes he has penned and performed, as anyone here already knows it. Just a master. Thank you Nick.

My time in this realm is coming to an end. I've been blessed with love, respect, kindness and so much more from My Love, Mr. Chris Williams. I have no way to repay him for these gifts, other than words of gratitude and the love I carry with me. There's much I fear about this journey into the unknown. If I could ask for one thing after I depart, it would be for him to remember the old Dr. Seuss saying; "Don't cry cuz it's over, smile because it happened." He knows I believe something as precious as love, to be eternal. I pray that one day, we'll find each other again and he'll return into my arms. I shall be waiting ♡
I first heard this in "About Time". I can't even remember when I watched it, but I know it was with my sister and it was one of those nights where nothing mattered.
I lost the "love of my life" 4-12-18 just two months shy of being married for 35 years , she had heart problems, I also cry when I hear this song , cause I'm reminded that I'll never find anyone to fill the void that was left from her passing , I miss her so much and kiss her picture everyday, I miss you Angie
Awesome song, love Nick Cave. I watched the new version of the Movie On The Beach and nearly drove myself crazy trying to identify this song well worth the effort.
I am very impressed. A friend introduced me to Nick Cave a couple hours ago and I was surprised with his voice and odd lyrics. I've put Dylan, Zevon, Van Morrison and Springsteen at the top of my greatest-artists list, and now I will add Cave. I still have not gotten excited about Leonard Cohen, and I don't understand why he doesn't appeal to me. (Update: Leonard Cohen has become a favorite, it took a drive in my car and a CD in the radio player.)
@Russell D I TOTALLY understand where you're coming from about Nick's voice, I've heard him speak before...interviews and such, but I saw his conversations tour here in Australia and I just melted, he is the most polite , intelligent, interesting person ( with an amazing sense of humour...and no nonsense bullshit) I think I have EVER heard speak...his voice will stay with me forever . And his beautiful wife Susie, so elegant and graceful, and so softly spoken....I just love her. I honestly believe she's the best thing ever to happen to Nick. You can actually 'feel ' how deeply in love they are.
Thanks for posting this from the melancholy man:" "The Vicar bangin' on about this and that". That line is deeply culturally imbued, perhaps reflective of our Aussie commodity in being plain speaking, authority-critical, non-religious (not anti) and pragmatic. All present in that off-the-cuff remark; a special live moment to be cherished and a beautiful lyrical lament on the attraction of opposites and the transcendence of love.
or like the opposite, He doesn't believe in god but writes it as a tribute to someone he loves who does believe in god. You must have missed the first line.
The nameless character in the song respects beliefs that aren't personally owned. This character only cares that the lover believes. Nick Cave's own beliefs are only brushed upon in this passing glance. And Nick Cave surely is not limited to beautiful songs.
you hear or see in it whatever you want to hear or see in it, to me that's the beauty of his songs, for me it's definitely about love but I understand how someone might look at it in a different light and find it to be about death. Whatever meaning it has it's one of the most beautfil songs to me...
Amazing song & his voice is like none other. You can hear the pull on his heart from Christ to come to know him. I hope he does. He knows there's more.
If this song doesn't bring honesty and reverence to life, what does? makes me think of my son in law who died last year from cancer during Covid at 38 and when I look into the eyes of my 3 year old grand daughter whom He will never see grow and mature as fathers should the fragility of life becomes so blatantly obvious
My 10 year old daughter daughter rang me while on holidays begging me to come home, she missed me so much, said she would pay the flight home from her savings of 5 euros. This song was on the radio and I had to hold back my tears.
Nick Cave. A true iconoclast. A wonderful talent. I forgot how much I enjoyed his music until Dean sang this song on X Factor Australia. His Murder Ballads remains one of the both amazing and unique group of songs in the last 20 years.
this song has always had a meaning for me of great sadness as the first time I heard Nick play it was at the state funeral of Michael Hutchins of INXS, another successful Australian musician dead before his time. Hutchins had lost his wife a year or two earlier so it was an incredibly sad, and nick and Michael had been friends. it was beautiful poetry but really pulled at the heart strings, yes a love song but as with nick also a powerfully depressive song the guy is a song writing genius
I don't often post YT comments, but I'll make an exception for this song. Together with Hallelujah by Leonard Cohen (and Jeff Buckley's excelent cover) this is one of my favourive ballads of all time. I get a little teary every time I hear either of them.
Very nice. Got hooked on Nick after seeing him on a live Video with other music artists paying tribute to the Great Leonard Cohen. Yeah, what's with the dis-likes. What is there not to like? Thanks for sharing.

That we can walk down, me and you
So keep your candles burning

If I could ask for one thing after I depart, it would be for him to remember the old Dr. Seuss saying; "Don't cry cuz it's over, smile because it happened." He knows I believe something as precious as love, to be eternal. I pray that one day, we'll find each other again and he'll return into my arms. I shall be waiting ♡
I first heard this in "About Time". I can't even remember when I watched it, but I know it was with my sister and it was one of those nights where nothing mattered.
“About time” has brought me here again in 2019. ❤️🙏🏻😇
Dr. Bill and me also
2024
I lost the "love of my life" 4-12-18 just two months shy of being married for 35 years , she had heart problems, I also cry when I hear this song , cause I'm reminded that I'll never find anyone to fill the void that was left from her passing , I miss her so much and kiss her picture everyday, I miss you Angie
R.I.P. Arthur Cave 2000.-2015.
RIP. So very sad
Howard Adamsky what happened?
His son died in 2015 in an accident at the age of fifteen.
his son took LSD and fell off a cliff and died.
@@katkorman1581 at 15? How sad.
Both amazing and admirable that a man of such a wealth of knowledge melancholic can still write such a song of love after so many birthday parties.
Simply Beautiful...
Thank you Nick Cave for this song
Leonard Cohen's documentary ...brought me to Nick Cave and I am grateful
Awesome song, love Nick Cave. I watched the new version of the Movie On The Beach and nearly drove myself crazy trying to identify this song well worth the effort.
THIS SONG SUNG BY NICK CAVE IS THE MASTERPIECE OF LOVE SONGS----- ABSOLUTELY SUPREME!
@Russell D
I TOTALLY understand where you're coming from about Nick's voice, I've heard him speak before...interviews and such, but I saw his conversations tour here in Australia and I just melted, he is the most polite , intelligent, interesting person ( with an amazing sense of humour...and no nonsense bullshit) I
think I have EVER heard speak...his voice
will stay with me forever .
And his beautiful wife Susie, so elegant and graceful, and so softly spoken....I just love her. I honestly believe she's the best thing ever to happen to Nick.
You can actually 'feel ' how deeply in love they are.
The bond of love needs no words-but if it does, this song is one of the most beautiful I have ever heard, describing the only bond that people have.
One man, one voice, one piano simply magnificent
Just beautiful...Nick Cave is a wonderful songwriter and a modern day poet ❤️
Thanks for posting this from the melancholy man:" "The Vicar bangin' on about this and that". That line is deeply culturally imbued, perhaps reflective of our Aussie commodity in being plain speaking, authority-critical, non-religious (not anti) and pragmatic. All present in that off-the-cuff remark; a special live moment to be cherished and a beautiful lyrical lament on the attraction of opposites and the transcendence of love.
I thought he had to be in the church to get the inspiration?
Yep can you imagine US ever gettin rha Ashes?
Just so moving.. The music is how I hope it will be eternally..
Like the god made Nick Cave only to sing beautiful songs for this cruel world
or like the opposite, He doesn't believe in god but writes it as a tribute to someone he loves who does believe in god. You must have missed the first line.
Alan Simmons Nope I didn't missed that, but I believe in god so I wrote my comment as my opinion.
what?
The nameless character in the song respects beliefs that aren't personally owned. This character only cares that the lover believes. Nick Cave's own beliefs are only brushed upon in this passing glance. And Nick Cave surely is not limited to beautiful songs.
have you listened to The Birthday Party
.בפעם הראשונה כשקבלתי את השיר דמעתי....שיר מדהים.....מלא אור ואהבה
Lump in me throat, tears, and loving it. From the old old aussie.
you hear or see in it whatever you want to hear or see in it, to me that's the beauty of his songs, for me it's definitely about love but I understand how someone might look at it in a different light and find it to be about death. Whatever meaning it has it's one of the most beautfil songs to me...
I've lost both my sons and my parents. This is a very special song to me.
🇮🇪
Amazing song & his voice is like none other. You can hear the pull on his heart from Christ to come to know him. I hope he does. He knows there's more.
Beautiful song. So glad I was able to hear this version. Lovely. Very comforting and peaceful.
I'm 6'3, around 17 stone & this song can reduce me to a small crying child every time....
:)
MANY Thanks Nick Cave !!!
Beautiful tune !!!
your not alone
Sending all our love and strength you beautiful human. May you find a speckle of hope in times of hopelessness.
Love from Australia x
He played this song at Michael Hutchence's funeral. They were very close friends. Such a sad and absolutely beautiful song.
For me........The most beautiful song ever written......
Genius, this man.. brings peace to me everytime..
my first time listening and im really speechless. dont see music as unique as this anymore
Can't imagine the pain now.
How can I give a million likes for this? The absolute most beautiful version of one of the most beautiful songs ever written
My 10 year old daughter daughter rang me while on holidays begging me to come home, she missed me so much, said she would pay the flight home from her savings of 5 euros. This song was on the radio and I had to hold back my tears.
my generation is missing the music that nick cave sheds upon the world, so powerful and meaningful, i wish they only knew good music
Nick Cave. A true iconoclast. A wonderful talent. I forgot how much I enjoyed his music until Dean sang this song on X Factor Australia. His Murder Ballads remains one of the both amazing and unique group of songs in the last 20 years.
This is the best song ever. Thank you Mr. Cave.
My heart cry's for you and your family...
It's not a love song, it's about divine embrace. You know, like God.
RIP Arthur - prayers to Nick and his family. This song is perfect.
When I listen to this song my daughter comes to my mind. Nick is a wonderful poet!
Have looked this up after hearing Sam West read this on Pandemic Poetry. So beautiful. Another wonderful repercussion of the poetry project.
This really stood out to me when I saw him live, and this is by far one of my favourite love songs. Simply beautiful!
this song has always had a meaning for me of great sadness as the first time I heard Nick play it was at the state funeral of Michael Hutchins of INXS, another successful Australian musician dead before his time.
Applauses were more than earned after such a song and such a performance! A song which touches people deeply, for sure!
What can anyone say about a song like this? Absolutely stunning!
Very nice. Got hooked on Nick after seeing him on a live Video with other music artists paying tribute to the Great Leonard Cohen. Yeah, what's with the dis-likes. What is there not to like? Thanks for sharing.
Emerging from under my rock - I'm attempting to educate myself a little more about this very captivating man by the name Nick Cave. Great song!
