Short answer: yeah, you don't have to place your finger on it if you don't want to. Long answer: not really. If you only place you fingers on string you pluck then alot of chord you play are either incorrect, or you don't know what you are playing. Which is fine if that is not your goal, but I want to know how to play chords, scale, and eventually freestyle and be able to play songs just from hearing it. Even if i'm not playing the string it's a habit to still have my finger on it so I play the right chord. Apologies for the long explanation
