We live in Oregon and had a mini split w/ 3 heads installed in our house a few years ago and it’s made ALL THE DIFFERENCE. All the great things you mentioned plus it heats when it’s cold too. A true Godsend ❤️ Congrats! You’re gonna love it for years to come 🙂 and i’ll bet you’ll be putting them in your house too. We run ours all year round for a fraction of our old electricity costs and way better temp control too. 🎉❤👍
What a great improvement for you all. I particularly like the fact that you can set the temperature and leave the remote back where people sleep. I had one in my house here in North Idaho that worked well during the summer but left a lot to be desired for heat in the winter since it gets so cold here. I think I should have had two of them instead of just the one. Anyway, great that you found a sponsor that was so nice to provide the unit. Their website looks interesting.
So glad you guys are now chillin’ in the hot desert sun! Thanks for the edification with the install and subsequent requirements. I love the smell of rain in the desert, what smells do you love? ♥️U all, stay frosty!
As someone who lives in a RV full time in Texas, rooftop AC are AWFUL! Mine always needed expensive repair and it still died. And totally agree about the noise. Congrats on the installation!🎉🥶
I love to watch your progress every week guys!! You are an inspiration ❤I live in Cabo San Lucas B.C.S. and in this part of the world, Mini Splits are what people use the most.
One thing that seemed like it helped you is the fact that you had a visual already of what was on the inside of the skin. What a benefit. I really admire your ability to figure things out.
We have installed 2 mini splits in our 3 story house. Its wonderful in summer and winter. Very affordable. We generate our own electricity from roof top solar panels. VERY affordable and there are so many rebates available (Canada). We love this way of conditioning our climate.
Yes sir, we did a 9,000BTU mini-split for our camper trailer - a converted 7 x 14 cargo trailer. We put the outside unit on the tongue and it's traveled over 10,000miles / 4 years with no issues. We even run it while traveling. We LOVE it - quiet, efficient, works very well - have camped with 17F low and 110F hi with 1" (R5) insulation all around. No problems with either the mini-split or the 'regular' 120v refrigerator. Some say that if you park on a really steep hill or severe sloshing of refrigerant while driving could cause compressor pump issues but we've not had any trouble with normal travel/camping - e.g. mostly paved / a little bit gravel roads and 6% mountain passes as the steepest inclines. :)
Huge respect for my hubby he’s an HVAC guy works on heavy duty mine equipment to High end new construction to motor homes and vehicles and huge refrigerator trailer’s.He hasn’t done an airstream tho and I know he’ll appreciate the video. Thanks again for another awesome video friends. I’m certain you’ll all be super comfy now👏👏❤️🇨🇦🐝🤗
Hi you guys. I am a loyal fan. And I happen to be a water treatment company owner/operator in Yuma,Az. And I just wanted to let you know that the condensation water from your mini split is completely safe drinking water. As a distiller makes water from steam, the drain water from your ac unit will give water by pulling it from the moisture in the air in the rig. If you wanted to test it, simply buy a pen TDS meter ($20), fill a cup of water from the drain hose. Turn on the tds meter, place the tip in the water and the reading. The lower the number, the cleaner the water. I know water quality is important to everyone, and living off grid can be difficult and complicated. Good luck and God Bless you and your family.
Nice I think they are working on a cassette type mini split AC unit that will replace standard RV AC units. There might be some hurdles to overcome but this is a change in the RV industry that is long overdue. Great job guys enjoy your quiet coolness.
Very long overdue! I had a small rant about the RV industry that didn't make the cut for this video, but there are 0 reasons these shouldn't be standard in any new RV. Mind boggling how they're letting everyone down with these rooftop units (consumer, campgrounds, environment). They should do better.
I am not in favor of freezing so I keep my AC, wish it was a mini split but I rent, at about 80 except when it is really hot then I push it down to between 77 and 75 depending on how hot. I am stuck with swamp coolers which only opperate well when the the humility and the heat are almost bearable. Either way having the AC at between 80 and 75, instead of freezing, makes the heat a little easier to handle here in AZ. The car is a different story, I usually have to run it full blast to keep the car cool enough to think to drive.
That is awsome. We are in Deming NM with very similar if not the climate and put a 12k mini split in our fifth wheel and it was a game changer for us. For those cold nights it gets down to the 30s we did have to have our heat on max on our mini split but we were running it on power saving mode because our battery bank was not doing well last year but we fixed that and I think we will be more comfortable this year we also have a lot more space as we are 40' with 4 slides so I think you guys will be pleasantly surprised in the cold months. We hope to be working on some hyperadobe as well soon. It is rough starting a homestead in the desert.
Awesome! After seeing what a difference this made I think "retrofitting your RV with a mini split" will be one of the first things I recommend to people starting to build in the desert.
I couldn't agree more! We live just south of Albuquerque and while we don't get as hot as you do in Southern NM, we still can get fairly hot. Yesterday was 102 and today is supposed to be 103! I can't believe and can only assume it's the HVAC people who have kept mini splits a secret from us! When I did initially look at getting a regular standard AC unit they wanted between 12K and 15k for the system, and don't even get me started on the power consumption. After installing three mini splits (with two solar panel kits that came with them) My cost all in was about $7,500! I can't believe what a huge difference this is made in our house. It's so much more comfortable coming into a house for the temperature is around 68 or 69° from over 100 outside then with our swamp cooler.
Love me a mini split. We put our first one in 2020. We are slowly adding one to every bedroom and rest of the house getting rid of two giant ground units. Cuts down having to cool areas of the house you aren’t using. As a fellow Arizonan I can relate to the heat.
I’m learning how long some of these little projects take. You make it look so simple and so easy and then we go to do things and it takes 45 times longer. Congratulations enjoy your time and a nice cool breeze.
I agree. Probably watched close to 100 DIY mini split install videos and prepared as much as I could. It still took me around a month to install three mini-split units and solar panels for two of the units. That's with a hired license handyman to help me with the solar panels. I think it always takes longer than you think it will!
I too cringed when you had to drill into the Air stream. It is what it is and for a good reason. COOL job all around and your eye for color is spot on thank you
Yay, a mini-split in the Airstream! I think you were using a swamp cooler in there too and a top air conditioner doesn't work so well! I'm staying in a bus sized RV right now and I'm not even using the rooftop air conditioner. My brother-in-law put a window air conditioner in for me near the bed in the back. Yes, a mini-split sounds like a great idea! Yay, Costway supported you with it! Fantastic that they did that! Kudos to them! Nearly silent cooling has to be wonderful! I like your brackets and the rivet to hold it through the skin of the Air Stream. I'm glad you added the 1"by. The unit looks nice above the table. I'm so glad you made it so you could get to the wiring so you can put the mini-split on it's own circuit. That was great planning. Ashley's dad is a genius! Yay, wires are run! I like the paint job Ashley. I'm glad you got the connections done. Thanks for showing how the quick disconnect works for that outside box. That is hard I'm sure to drill a hole for the condesate and refrigerant line to go through the outside of the Airstream is scary! Thanks for showing all the steps! It's great that it works so well! I'm so happy for all of you! Yay, heating too! That remote can do anything! Cute, baking cookies in the Airstream and having the kids eat them in their hoodies! This was so fun to watch. Thanks for this video Longnecker family!
Wow -guys, that was a nerve wracking 😅 but worth while upgrade 👏🏼. So happy youse are chilling 🥶 now in that heat. Thanks for the thorough info on the mini-split, I can definitely see the benefits of these unit in the home or camper going forward. Stay well and blessed.💛🙏🏼💛
It's also important to clean the evaporator and the blower wheel in the inside unit as they do get mold especially in dusty, dirty environments like our Sonoran desert. I know this from experience. I clean mine 3-4 times a year but that's because of my partners autoimmune disease. Mold is very dangerous to her. That being said, I love mini split systems.
The coils need cleaning for sure, but having replaced a blower unit on the inside I wouldn't recommend disassembling the unit that often. I was sweating doing it the one time 😂 Look into this stuff: amzn.to/3WUzN8p - great for sort of cleaning everything in one go.
Thank you for the link, although I've only had us running for a month, living in the desert like you do I have had to clean the filters frequently because of dust. I will definitely get this product and use it!
I think it's wonderful that you were able to get this done I lived in 29 palms California for a while as I built my camper on my truck I started at 3:00 in the morning then by 6:00 I was done until almost dark I would do a load of laundry walk about 150 ft to the clothesline hang it go back put another load in and when I took it out to hang it the first load was already done half an hour I felt really sorry for the Marines who lived at the base there when they had to wear those uniforms even in the summer when it was like a hundred and ten in the shade so you need that air conditioning and the heat in the winter because it does get cold in the desert which people do not realize love watching your show love how you guys work together as a family to get things done and I love watching your animals bring me such Joy aloha from Hawaii
Great improvised install there. The only suggestion I have is to look into a "Soft Start" system for the mini-split. It shouldn't really change the general run amp draw, but the amp spike on startup can damage battery systems. Your mini-split might already have a soft start built in, but probably not. Might be a good add on or it might not. Worth investigating. Have fun with the next project.
The combined skills of your family are to be admired greatly. So glad you can cool off better and cheaper. Every endeavour is so interesting. 👏👏👏 from New Zealand where the no8 wire mentality is huge. 🇳🇿
Good morning how are you folks doing today look like you guys are doing okay but yeah keep building in the house winter's coming but you guys are doing okay keep up the good work
Great video guys! Although most of Jonathan’s explanation step-by-step technical videos go over my head you have such a clear way of explaining/teaching that I will watch them anyhow who knows what little detail my brain might absorb for future reference. Or would that be who knows what detail my little brain might absorb? Lol. Thank you for sharing.
After watching several of these videos I believe to live off grid you have to be a Jack of all trades. Great work and believe you have the patience of a saint
I have 2 friends that discovered mini-splits and put some in their house. Others heard about it and asked for them to get more for them. It has exploded into a whole business of going to get them and install.them. This has changed half the lives in our little town of 1,500.
I’m impressed! Considering that y’all live in the desert and have pets living inside your home is very clean! I’ve never been able to keep my trailer that clean.
Mini-split FTW! I'm glad you all did this. I just watched the other video (where you all added the other panels to support that old 1.5kWh A/C... power-hungry POS). Glad you all got this!
Saw those in Japanese friends' homes in the 90s, heck, they even put them in the classrooms and school offices at my old high school. Great to see they work so well here and especially in the trailer. Just remarkable to see your versatility and fearless (mostly) adaptation. Cheers!
After watching your install, I know that if I get a mini-split, I'll want to budget for a professional install. Jonathan and Ashley, you are amazing with all the things you DIY. Congrats on being dool and comfortable with an efficient unit!
Your so funny Ash, you have a lot of joy loving your husband. So cute and his still a little bashful 😂😂😂, you guys are so cute. Talk about intelligence, between yourself &. Jonathan, I love seeing projects complete. And if course I do love your stormy skyline too ❤️ looking forward to seeing y'all soon, love from Oz ❤️
Awesome video, guys! I'm glad to see that you got a mini-split and finally have comfortably cool living in your Airstream in the desert. My son-in-law installed one for me at my lake cabin (we live in Maine) a few years ago, and I love it. The (un-insulated) cabin used to get unbearably hot in the summer, and I would just not even go there on hot days, or I'd have to leave early when it started heating up. Now it is comfortable all summer long, and my SIL and grandson have even spent a week there in the winter for ice fishing, and the mini split kept them comfortably warm. They are amazing little appliances.
Dang, y'all making me sweat. So glad you have A/C again and maybe some solitude! My rooftop A/C in my Passport is the same, loud and inefficient! Thanks for the vid!
I have a 1000 ft home and its 2 berms 1 bath. I had 3 mini splits installed. One in each bedroom and one in the main part of the house. The spare bedroom rarely gets used, the main bedroom gets used at night when it's over 100 but for the most part the one in the main part of the house is on a lot. I use the little lint cloths that are designed for washing machines on the outside drip line. Zip tie it on and it keeps out bugs and frogs. The 1st of the month I take the filter and wash off the dust. My installer showed me how to use canned air gently on the inside coils to keep them clean. Enjoy the cool!
Mini-splits with the variable speed compressors are awesome! We had those for temp management in units while I was contracting in the Middle East. Great video.
Thanks too Costway you all can do the happy dance. I'm so glad that you are not suffering any more with the heat. I can not be with out AC because of my breathing issue. I live in Little Elm Tx and It as been over a 100all week. Be safe and God bless you all 🙏🫶🐼
Great job you two. I did a DIY mini-split install 2 years ago in my workshop here in Vail AZ, so I can relate to your stress levels. So happy it all worked out and you all can now "Chill out" during the summer heat and also get away from the humidity during our monsoon storms. You also be totally happy when it comes time to heat you Airstream. Looking forward to your next video
The Dometic roof top is so loud ours in our C class did give us cold with external fans blowing but the noise was a killer. I don’t seriously know how you stand it since 2017. This mini split sounds long a good option.
Johnathan-it's not how you do it at home kids! Ashley-Safety third T-shirt? Great content, thank you for the thorough coverage! CostWay is my next stop! Everything's fine!

You are my main stream of entertainment (TV is so bad ! ) and I am really getting to like your beautiful family very much I for one will enjoy those commercial spots, knowing the money is going into your coffers and becoming an income for you. Hugs to you all, human & animal ❤
I enjoy watching Tiny Shiny on UA-cam. As a couple you are adorable. As a family ya’ll are precious. I’ve watched you since you landed in AZ. I thought you were insane. I continued to watch out of curiosity and I am hooked! I enjoy every aspect of your adventure.
refigerent is dirt cheap if you used canned air and use a tool to pierce the side or screw on top. its full of r152a, which is a lot closer to itfreon. low head pressure, usually has better net btu efficiency through volumetric efficiency than r135a. it has like 1 quarter the heat carrying capacity per unit weight, but its like 4x more dense. people with classic cars who cant get r12 og freon or people with old vending machines have been using it for years with no problems.
Wow! Much admiration to both of you, for taking on the task of installing the mini-split air conditioner yourselves! 🏆 👏🏻👏🏼 It looked quite complicated! And challenging threading the wires from the back of the Air Stream to the front. And that measuring of pressure for leaks! 😳 A very complicated project successfully completed! 🏅🎉 (In Australia we call them reverse cycle air conditioners - because of being able to cool & heat! Handy to have temperature readings in both °C & °F! 🌡 As your weather gets colder ours is getting warmer/hotter! 🏖 🌞 Greetings from Julie in Perth, Western Australia 🇦🇺
That airstream it's as old as I am, so thank you for being careful with it but tbh... I never lost faith in you Jonathan. You guys are all bada$$es!!! 💯💞
Awesome upgrade🌞fan tas tic...I watched the video...I learned something 🙏😀 Positive energy is contagious...roll with it. Universe Provides. No storm for you.🌞 Mini split cool 🥶❄️❤️🤍😹😄
I think it's all a matter of perspective. where I live in New Mexico, in the hottest part of the summer, like it is now, we will get in the low 100s, so 68° seems like walking into a freezer! There are some parts of our state to the South, near Texas, that get like Phoenix and can get as hot as 118°, which as you know is nuts!
@@billykulim5202 I think it's definitely perspective, where I live in the southwestern United States is mostly desert. We do have monsoons but they come and go. Indonesia, if I'm not mistaken, has a lot of humidity and we do not. For instance right now at 4:00 p.m. in the afternoon, the weather station I have says the outdoor temperature is 101° Fahrenheit (33.3° c) and the humidity is sitting at 16%. So while it is still very hot outside the humidity makes all the difference in the world. When we went to Trinidad and Tobago on vacation, the temperature was usually in the '90s but the humidity was also usually above 80% and we struggled hard because we were not used to that much humidity with the heat. I think you probably have it a little harder than we do. But still, I like 68° f when it's 101 outside I cannot lie 😁
I need to get one of those CostWay mini splits. Momma hates to be hot. Our home AC is not that old but our house is. Single pain windows and in the heat of Tucson. I'm sure a mini would greatly help our house. You guys are great. We watch every episode. Thanks for sharing your family and animals with us. Our dream is to get away like you have, but because we can't right now, your sharing this lifestyle gives us a little bit of the good life from the comfort of our own living room. Can't wait to see that round house done. Staying tuned!
Congratulations!! this mini split will change your life trust me I live in Greece with 100 Fahrenheit almost every day during the summer BUT make sure to put a small net to the drain because bugs always get s in very easily and they will end up in your bed….☹️ or worse in your head during the night..is very common!!!

Great review of mini split
I installed an LG mini split in my Forest River 34' travel trailer in 2018. Game changer, especially if you live in an RV full time.
I hesitate to use the phrase game changer, but yeah. It’s a game changer 😂

😊just a little chilly then?😊😊😊
We're vikings ❤@@ChristineKelly1000
Yay! I’m so happy for you being able to keep cool!
Love me a mini split. We put our first one in 2020. We are slowly adding one to every bedroom and rest of the house getting rid of two giant ground units. Cuts down having to cool areas of the house you aren’t using. As a fellow Arizonan I can relate to the heat.
Energy efficiency is so important. This has always been a concern for all of you. Congratulations 🎊 cool in the summer, warm in the winter.
Tiny Shiny Home ❤ 🏡 I love your dog always being part of the video 😅 keep up the awesome projects 😊❤ 🙏
I too cringed when you had to drill into the Air stream. It is what it is and for a good reason. COOL job all around and your eye for color is spot on thank you
Pure copper wool in the outlet of the drain tube might cure the bug problem.
Yeah but those copper sheep are so hard to find.
@@sharvo6But they have no natural predators!
Okay, forgive me. That is so COOL!!! 😎 😂
I had a mini split in my tiny house with ac and heat. Great performance in the SoCal desert in the summer and winter. Enjoy
Proud of you guys. Job well done!
Nice to have some good AC. I just redid the AC units in our house. It was not fun...lol
But we're cool now!👍😎💕
So happy and relieved for your family. Great job.! Big shout out to Costway ! 👍😊💗
Glad you all are nice and Cool now
I am so happy for you guys successfully installing the mini split! Enjoy all those cool days and nights-you guys earned it and then some 🥶 on!😊
Wow -guys, that was a nerve wracking 😅 but worth while upgrade 👏🏼.
Loved Your little side paint job, looks so pretty, glad that your all cool and that it was sponsored. Love from The UK X
Congratulations on the ac!!!
AC is truly a blessing---congratulations on your successful upgrade. How is the swale/planting doing?
Thank you, Willis H. Carrier.
The green paint looks really nice. Gives it a nature vibe.
Mini splits definitely have soft starts built in, thus why they are so good for off grid applications.
Very intelligent couple, love to watch y'all 💖. Inspire me to get up and get something done 👍
Mini splits are the bomb!
I have a mini split in my cottage,
and it freezes me out 😂
Great vid 👍🏻
I am so excited you finally can freeze your kids out!! We have a window unit in our bedroom and we keep it on 62! Love to sleep in a freezer! 😁
I have 2 friends that discovered mini-splits and put some in their house. Others heard about it and asked for them to get more for them. It has exploded into a whole business of going to get them and install.them. This has changed half the lives in our little town of 1,500.
That’s amazing 🤩
I am amazed just how giving people are. I enjoyed watching your show. And the green looks great. I love your bird hooks.
Eating yummy chocolate chip 🍪 , in jackets, in the summer in AZ…you gotta love it😊
Saw those in Japanese friends' homes in the 90s, heck, they even put them in the classrooms and school offices at my old high school. Great to see they work so well here and especially in the trailer. Just remarkable to see your versatility and fearless (mostly) adaptation. Cheers!
Thank you!!
After watching your install, I know that if I get a mini-split, I'll want to budget for a professional install. Jonathan and Ashley, you are amazing with all the things you DIY. Congrats on being dool and comfortable with an efficient unit!
I feel cooler just watching you guys!!
Please share info on the lights above the dining area.
You bring a smile to our faces! Thank you!!
Love all the positivity and inspirational point of view! Keep it up! You are pioneers!!
For me I’m so glade they gave you the mini split. I’ve information was invaluable.
Great job guys, you always knock things out of the park! 😊👍💗🇨🇦
Johnathan-it's not how you do it at home kids!
Ashley-Safety third
T-shirt? Great content, thank you for the thorough coverage! CostWay is my next stop! Everything's fine!
Love your info sections, adverts if you will, but gee ! we learn a lot for the dreams we dream ... thank you for all you do to share your adventure with us.
There's DIY and there's D.I.Y. We're not to this level yet 😂
Yay cookies and goodies! Another great challenge met on the TSH homestead!!
Wow! Much admiration to both of you, for taking on the task of installing the mini-split air conditioner yourselves! 🏆 👏🏻👏🏼
It looked quite complicated! And challenging threading the wires from the back of the Air Stream to the front.
And that measuring of pressure for leaks! 😳
A very complicated project successfully completed! 🏅🎉
(In Australia we call them reverse cycle air conditioners - because of being able to cool & heat! Handy to have temperature readings in both °C & °F! 🌡
As your weather gets colder ours is getting warmer/hotter! 🏖 🌞
Greetings from Julie in Perth, Western Australia 🇦🇺
Love your piece of paradise ❤️.
awwwwh man. that is deluxe guys!! enjoy ❄️☃️😁
That airstream it's as old as I am, so thank you for being careful with it but tbh... I never lost faith in you Jonathan. You guys are all bada$$es!!! 💯💞
Well done once more , nothing stops you guys. So entertaining to watch.
Awesome upgrade🌞fan tas tic...I watched the video...I learned something 🙏😀 Positive energy is contagious...roll with it. Universe Provides. No storm for you.🌞 Mini split cool 🥶❄️❤️🤍😹😄
30:45 I laughed. 68°F (20°C) is what my thermostat is set to in the winter to keep warm. I can't imagine calling that cold.
Same here..
When it’s 120F (49C) outside… 68F is soooo cold!!
I think it's all a matter of perspective.
where I live in New Mexico, in the hottest part of the summer, like it is now, we will get in the low 100s, so 68° seems like walking into a freezer!
There are some parts of our state to the South, near Texas, that get like Phoenix and can get as hot as 118°, which as you know is nuts!
i'm in indonesia, and 24c (75f) is to cold for me
@@billykulim5202 I think it's definitely perspective, where I live in the southwestern United States is mostly desert.
36:41 so glad you are cooler now
Congratulations!! this mini split will change your life trust me I live in Greece with 100 Fahrenheit almost every day during the summer BUT make sure to put a small net to the drain because bugs always get s in very easily and they will end up in your bed….☹️ or worse in your head during the night..is very common!!!
