It always amazes me when we get to look around your place how many, many things you have accomplished. Such a great laugh about the purple "pooper" which will go away when you can use your own home facilities inside and the great septic system you built for that purpose. Who knows, you may even get a regular washing machine inside too! We are all so fortunate to have such wonderful creature comforts at our fingertips. Thanks for another great video.

I just had a thought for your outdoor shower. Have you all considered like a Yurt style roof over your spiral? They have a huge opening and closing dome skylight in the center so you could still have all the light and ventilation and the star views but be warmer in the winters or during bad weather. And then you could add a glass or shutter type door to the entrance to cut down on the wind. Just an idea to play with. I love your homestead and I don't think I have missed a video in over a year! I hope you all stay healthy and well, thanks for being a nice little break for me. Stay safe and embrace the joy!

We’ve worked out with our chickens that if we let them roam for an hour or so before dark they will automatically head back to their roosts/pen.
We can attest for the black fly larvae and have small tomato tins with holes drilled hanging with a few pieces of off cut meat. The fly lays the eggs in meat they grow and fall out. Chicken candy.

We have an automatically closing (timed, battery) entry to the coop so that when they return after their late afternoon free range, they are secure for the night - no chasing them up, just closing the gate proper when you get round to it

There’s so much to enjoy here but one of my favorite things is it feels as real and authentic as the earth itself. No attempts to appear perfect, but a willingness to share mistakes and lessons learned. No Pollyanna, hand-holding, Kumbayah singing stories: even as you admire the beauty around you and express gratitude for the many folks that have helped you in myriad ways, you speak of hardships and heartbreaks with an awareness that your audience is huge and you need to be careful about how much you divulge. Y’all are killing it. ☺️

Project Kamp (UA-cam) uses compost bins for storing their used compost. After a couple of years it can be used as plant compost. They are in Portugal and have several people on site most of the time. I can't blame you for wanting to ditch composting. Advantage of a septic system is the water gets filtered into the earth and helps the soil above.

You should try growing Olives. There is a type of olive tree that grows in the desserts of Somalia that can take the heat.
(olea europaea sp. africana) Also this type of olive oil is very high in polyphenols, super healthy.
Apparently this Olive species produces more polyphenols because of the lack of water and high heat of the desert, just trying to survive the desert.

Watching your video today. You're talking about your chickens. You say that the eggs are better if they're eating bugs. I just happen to see a video about people in Australia are building systems to Ray's black fly larvae fire digesting food waste. They have a serious problem with food waste in Australia. The black fly doesn't bother people and the way they're doing it they really don't have black flies. They just have tons of larvae which becomes great food for chickens. You might look into it, it's simple. With a few bins and some black flies and throw all your food waste into the bins and let the larvae grow. It kind of sounds disgusting, but if you watch one of the videos you'll see it's really not.

Have you looked into cork finish for the outside of your projects. The cork is similar to stucco or the hand finish you're doing now. It's a spray-on. It's colored to whatever color you want to be so you don't have to paint it. It offers extra insulation which you may or may not want. I don't know how that works for you. But it's supposed to hold up for a really long time. It is applied with a spray painter. Mike, are you already using. And I think they offer you a real long time warranty on it. I just saw a video from a company yesterday that's based in Arizona. That makes the stuff. It might be worth looking into for the future. It's possible they might even sponsor you the product just to get the exposure. Keep the videos coming. I enjoy watching you guys. Wonder how you worked that hard everyday?

I have also found that shade under maturing trees in Albuquerque reduces the intense sun rays and heat affects on the vegies. Trying red potatoes this summer, along with volunteer cucs. The cucs are surviving but not flowering and producing. Had this problem last summer with bell peppers. Patio tomatoes did great. All vegies in pots. Had six volunteer Desert Willow trees sprout in our front yard this summer! I am raising them in good-sized pots for now. One will go into the front yard of our townhome this fall. They will get about 20 - 30 feet tall and as wide and tolerate pretty dry soil and our mile high location. With the nice monsoons this summer, they literally bloomed all summer. Tough trees for heat snd high desert cold.

It takes a long time to decompose, even then you have to remove the compost from the drum. Back in the day we used chemical like lime to speed up and cover the smell. Have yall tried the plywood trick in the chicken run? You wet down an area of earth, put plywood over it and next morning flip it over and the chickens feast on bugs. Might sustain you for a little while.

12:53 would it be possible to raise a couple of geese with the hens, with a large bowl of water for them to paddle/ wash. To act as noisey guards?

Were you able to check into those free water generating panels that Cochise County is apparently giving away? I saw them on another Cochise County UA-cam account and messaged you because with 6 people, numerous anumals and gardeny, you can never have too much water.

I would like to understand why your Composite Toilet failed. Especially, given it was an government approved plans. My experience is that governmental plans are always missing important info. Look forward to your father arriving and detailing the problems and solutions. I would also like a discussions as to if this will impact your new home's septic system. I've wondered if your round home should have a grease pit.

Yeah we'll get into it more in a later video. It won't impact the existing septic.

Have you gotten permits to set up a septic system and leach field ? That would be very nice.... If so they need access for trucks every once in a while for pumping sometimes.... that CASA would make a nice modern bathroom or storage room afterwards....

Oh love, you guys had no idea that the Casa de Kaka wasn’t working. I thought because you had people coming in and out you needed the purple box. Good luck can’t wait to figure out how you fixed it because that like to do that I mean, build our own composting not work on yours.😮🤣🤣

Yes, it will be interesting whether the kids stay around. Three of four of our adult kids (20's) are still with us because of the high cost of everything, especially shelter.

An incineration toilet is a system you could try out, awesome for places where there is no grid or like you said no more composting :D Anyway hope this gives you an idea on how to improve that.

Just wanted to say learning to can goods up is easy. To put tomatoes up you need mason jars lids and rings and a stock pot tall enough to cover the jars by 1 to 2 inches of water. Tomatoes are high acid so you only need a water bath to can those up. Low acid you really need a pressure canner however many people around the world including the Amish only use water bath for all food adding acid with the vinegar. Farmer markets are a great place to find good prices on flats of tomatoes or any other vegetables. Canning is a great way to put up food, hopefully you made plans in your home build for a pantry to keep those jars of goodness.

    Hi there,
Keep up the good work; you have created a unique experience, lifestyle and provide a resource with merit.
Regarding the ‘Casa D’ Caca’. May not be as you intended, but hardly a complete failure.
You still have a nice structure, with water collection, that can be converted into…
    (Fill in the blank)
As I see it: it’s an opportunity to remodel into a proper bathhouse, flushing toilets (2-stalls?) and indoor showers (2?) with plenty of hot water, a couple sinks, mirrors and a split mini heat-pump for
    year-round comfort.
Could be other things… but that’s my vote. May be well after the house is done, or may be a decent side project.
Look at the support you got for the Goat Shed.
Maybe some of your future workshop guests would be willing to pitch in?
I understand the added cost, work, septic system, etc. (shower water to irrigation, toilets to conventional septic system)
But what a real plus for the family, and, guests, etc.
    It’s not a failure it’s experience… I have lots of experience. 😊

Actually, maybe double stalks is a bit optimistic, maybe just 1 big ‘conventional’ bath house.

Could the kids make a mobile chicken tractor? You could wheel them to new areas every day so they can eat bugs.
