Very cool to see the 006 lock and key. Once upon a time 006 was only available on 1 specific model of luxury luggage from 1 specific manufacturer. As a dimple lock it was also considerably harder to reverse engineer from photos so the 3D model of 006 that was available at that time was just a loose estimate. Good to see 006 is available in more forms now although obviously this has made it easier to reverse engineer as researchers no longer have to spend 1000s buying multiple sets of luxury luggage to test.

I found one in a parking lot before I knew about the TSA thing. It was ridiculously easy to pick but I thought, ‘that’s about what I expected, but it’s kind of cute, I guess I’ll keep it’
When I went on vacation in France I just zip tied the zipper on all but one small pocket, where I put a cheap multitool and some spare zip ties. No one cut my zip ties or took my multitool. Different times then.

Apart from being just a funky little thing for the collection, I can’t see a practical use for these at all. Even if someone decided to call a locksmith for their teeny tiny suitcase lock, you’d save time and money as a locksmith if you just bought them a new one as a ‘free gift’.
I do have one of these tsa locks that had a tamper tag. It popped up when I picked it but there’s no combo lock and I don’t have the key so now it’s just permanently up and it bothers me sometimes. Maybe I’ll take it apart to figure out how to fix it some day.
Fortunately, I work in a job where I can get my hands on serial numbered zip ties very easily.
Im not aware off hand of this zip exploit you referred to though. Now I’ve gotta go do some digging. I just love knowing how these things work.

TSA locks can be cheap, and they're also built into expensive baggage too.
Often people are looking for a replacement key and combination change. That tool would be better sold to actual TSA workers. End users need a replacement key option and that also works for locksmiths too, and is 100x cheaper.
The only niche thing about this is the manufacturing process and price to pay for it.
They could have went another way and saved. They're 400 dollars because metal 3d printers are just as expensive as laser cutters with far less use. They just need to find a 1,000 buyers and their set.
Don't worry. The Chinese will have one just like it for 40 dollars in a few months. They copy multipick exclusively. However, they already make these for far less.

Locksmiths would use these, especially when someone has lost the keys from the lock and used it on a bag , case ,or even a locker. There's been times I could of done with them.
2 people share a locker but one lock, the one with the key is away and the other person needs something from the locker.
The other alternative is bolt cutters and a new padlock.

Also a locksmith and was thinking the same... UNTIL price comes into it lol I mean sure with a $65 flat rate service charge they pay for themselves after six uses, but I've yet to find a TSA lock in the wild that couldn't just be jiggled or decoded open fairly easily... Number 6 might be an issue, but this is the first time I've ever seen one, even in a video... I was starting to think they didn't actually exist and the key was simply a placeholder for future options.

    • @adamwest8711

Kinda surprised. Apart from the ‘tamper’ tag popping up, I don’t know why anyone would pay a locksmith to open a lock you can basically pull apart with your bare hands. That’s a bumper pay day right there for zero work.

      @derekbroestler7687 2 роки тому

@@adamwest8711 You'd be surprised.... It doesn't happen everyday, but it does happen. Calls to unlock insanely cheap, insecure locks, calls to rekey a house and when you get there it's all Kwikset "smart"key.... It's partly because the average person has no real knowledge of locks and partly psychological, a person sees a lock and thinks "secure" even if the lock is garbage.
Sometimes there is a valid reason though, like the situation Pete described where it's a shared custody locker where it's worth it to the customer to call a locksmith just to avoid having to reissue keys.

@@derekbroestler7687 I believe the number six (I am not a number; I am a free lock!) is only for built-in locks on hard side luggage. I do know that the master is funny: if I recall correctly, the government doesn't give all the positions of the master key to manufacturers. Instead, they give a distinct subset of the positions to each manufacturer, and that manufacturer only populates that subset in their locks.

these key sets are why i'm strongly against the mandatory encryption backdoors some politicians want to push through.
you'd get digital TSA locks on all your "secure" internet communication, and once the backdoor has been cracked all encryption with that specific backdoor is effectively unprotected.
just like with TSA locks, 1 mistake and an entire secure communications platform is open for everyone to snoop through.

Second hand luggage people would most likely download the files and print or get them laser cut for the couple dollars it would cost for each. Price is the real wall if they were say 5€ each and 30€ euro for the set people would buy them just to have them but I really don’t think they will sell at those prices. They would be fun to have if reasonably priced though!

I would have to give my two cents in defense of the TSA locks. Granted, these are not Chuck Norris grade locks, not even close. However, if properly locked, it really serves a deterrent to easy access, unlike unlocked luggage. Even with hacks, getting by the locks is still a time consuming process, and being a worker in the luggage handling area is a very fast paced environment. Also, a smart thief would only carry the TSA007 key to keep it lightweight and stealthy. The other key types are nearly nonexistent; I think only the TSA006 is the alternative and that’s in small numbers.

From a purely scientific approach nothing about 3D printed metal is considered high quality. Technically and legally 3D printers don't create objects which are true stainless steel. I've done destructive testing on 3D printed metals and they lack in every testible area, even time to produce and cost. It's a cool emerging science for sure and theoretically people are creating new alloys, one of which will eventually have a top tier performance for a niche use.
I'm a metal nerd to the max, sorry if I'm dumping it out here lol. Hope you don't feel like I'm calling you out. There is just not one single metric these keys excel in. They are cool, but I'd like to see them for a tenth of the price. That's what they are worth imo. In a perfect world a 3d printed key should cost half the price of an everyday key. We aren't there with the science yet. These keys are well beyond a novelty price tag tho, and that's where my real objection comes in.
