It needed lots of airplay. The first album is outstanding. There were too many uptight people working in radio even back then who would not give a band like this the airplay it deserved while claiming they were so cutting edge and cool. Pat Benetar, Blondie and Bette Midler got so much, (too much) exposure back then but Spider and even Grace Slick's 1981 solo album got no exposure. The radio programmers hated authentic rocker women and artistic women back then and would not slip in anything that was not dull. Even by the early 1990s radio and tv stations could have given new life to this with radio and video exposure but they did not. Radio and music is a good old boy network and the bottom crawlers with no talent ended up at the top with some exceptions. We see it everywhere now but did not know it was a rigged game back then because good music was still getting through. You are the only other person who I have heard of that watched it. I saw this on there, bought the album, biggest memory was watching Chryssie sing Brass in Pockets. Long long time ago, but very good memories.
Great song that came out a couple years too early, I always felt this song would've done better if it came out in 1982-83 instead of 1980 because it has that early MTV sound to it and most of the high charting hits of the Spring of 1980 were either leftover disco tunes, love ballads & soft rock, this song was definitely cutting edge for the Spring of 1980
it was a weird experience for me when i heard this song spring 1980 it was like a song i heard in a night time dream as a child years earlier but here it was on the radio in 1980.l a weird experience for very memorable puppy love song
A lot of people were sick of disco by the spring of 1980 and Pat Benatar and Bette Midler were given so much radio exposure and 1980s radio was rigged.. this was a phenomenal band that was not given the proper exposure
Great song, I always felt this song would've been a bigger hit if it came out sometime around 1982-83 instead of 1980 since most songs that were big hits that year were either leftover disco tunes, love ballads and soft adult contemporary music.
It simply needed a lot of airplay that it did not get. If it was aired as a new release around April 1982 instead of spring 1980 and got lots of airplay it would have been a massive hit as it was so much better than songs like "hey mickey" by toni basil . This song had a very unique sound when it was out. Radio was rigged 36 years ago just as the music and political world is rigged now.
I've thought the downside of Top 40 radio in 1980 was it focused too much on the leftover disco sound, love songs and soft rock, I always felt this song would've fit more at home if it was released 2-3 years due to the gaining popularity of MTV.
Think how much Fleetwood Mac's good song Sara got played in 1980 or billy joel to the point of being revolting or pink floyd or bette midler or pat benatar or blondie. something was not right that this song got so little radio play. I contend if this song got significant airplay this band would have made a big impact in 1980.

It wasn't the Radio Stations fault it was their record label here in Australia that let them down. They were all sent a promo 45 of this song. but the band never got promotion from the label
just lovely to hear this again. I bought the vinyl single at the time but never saw the film clip before. Very clever and the band all having fun. And Amanda ... oh wow!
I heard this in Germany I bought the record never heard of him again I'm into heavy metal but I like this band they broke up they were cool they were from New York.
If this has been on Classic VH1's rotation a lot of renewed life would have been given to this great song. 3:00 to the end nice and loud unlike my cd. Awesome song.
No, no you didn't. I am pretty sure that back in 1980 in Oklahoma I was the only one that knew about "Pop Clips", with new venue called music videos. You are the only other person who I have heard of that watched it. I saw this on there, bought the album, biggest memory was watching Chryssie sing Brass in Pockets. Long long time ago, but very good memories.
Wore this record out… but I still have it!!!
never heard them before... adding ot my collection!
WORSHIP this song-so amazing!
Love this song
Great song that came out a couple years too early, I always felt this song would've done better if it came out in 1982-83 instead of 1980 because it has that early MTV sound to it and most of the high charting hits of the Spring of 1980 were either leftover disco tunes, love ballads & soft rock, this song was definitely cutting edge for the Spring of 1980
it was a weird experience for me when i heard this song spring 1980 it was like a song i heard in a night time dream as a child years earlier but here it was on the radio in 1980.l a weird experience for very memorable puppy love song
A lot of people were sick of disco by the spring of 1980 and Pat Benatar and Bette Midler were given so much radio exposure and 1980s radio was rigged.. this was a phenomenal band that was not given the proper exposure
entered Billboard April 19, 1980 .reached #39.
Wasn't this song written, at least in part, by Anton Figg, the drummer of David Letterman's band all those years?
Long live Video Concert Hall!!!!
I contend if this song got significant airplay this band would have made a big impact in 1980.
for the longest time i could only remember ooh its a mystery i thought it was some obscure rush song but here it is
Liked this song in the day, my headbanging buds, what the hll
A PLUS. A+
I forgot all about this song until hearing it again just now.
@deathlok2099 The opening to VCH was 30-45 seconds of Carouselambra, by Led Zeppelin.
1:11 Amanda singing "mystery" has an accent like a rich girl. Was she from a wealthy South African family? Never heard her speak before would love to see some old video of her speaking about anything.
I remember watching this on "Pop Clips" before there was an Mtv.
Try playing this song
at 0.78x playback speed
it’s really awesome. UA-cam
has these speeds at the top
corner of this screen.
Why?
for over 30 years I though this song was called It's A Mystery
the full title is "New Romance (It's a Mystery)".
Why this classic didn't go Top Ten is beyond me.
This song and band's style were out of sync for the time!
@@thespeez this was a phenomenal sound for 1980 the best song in the year 1980. rigged radio did not play it and their picture on the album had a s&m look that might have turned uptight people off.
I've still got their 2 albums on Vinyl
“Anton Zip on the drums, ladies and gentlemen...”
AWESOME! Thanks for posting this... Amanda's post does not the quality of this one.
Married the most jealous woman in the world! Wouldn’t let me watch the video and hid my 45! Finally got it back on our 20th anniversary.
@MrCzechers damn i rember video concert hall ahhhhhhh the good old days
HOLLY KNIGHT interview in UK mag Rock Candy oct/nov 2020

I never knew that this song is Spider's original.
I thought it was Adrian Zmed's.
Jimmy Lowell of Riff Raff!
Looks like they pioneered the ''frozen moment'' in their vid..lol..a la Creed 20 yrs later..anyone one got the vid of the Toronto version..?? really kicks tht one
Leslie
stone cold by rainbow must have liked the frozen moment concept
Holly’s audiobook brought me here.
I need lots of proof that that is not Tony Banks at :22
I heard Lisa Hartman's version of this song but my opinion Spider is much more better and more inspiring and more natural.
Lisa Hartman from Knots Landing
Anton!
