Homeless sleeping pod Concept

My version of an inexpensive shelter that a church or other organization can construct and place outdoors on their premises to use as a winter time overflow sleeping pod for the homeless.
Wow so many negative comments. Man spent his time and resources in the spirit of sheltering the homeless. I like the idea, and appreciate your video.
rakkab mechir thanks also
Absolutely! Thanks a bunch for all you do!!
rakkab mechir like I just posted on here if you really want to impress me get the governments of the world to leave people the f*** alone so that they can actually live this way building the shelter is the easy part that anybody can do
rakkab mechir I thought the same thing. 565 thumbs down at the time I viewed it. Why? Someone whose heart is obviously big enough to lend solutions to help people until the rest of our bankrupt societal system catches up! Great work!
Tents are cheaper and more practical.
FOR ALL OF YOU WITH THE COMMENTS ABOUT JUST BUY OR USE A TENT: I've done a lot of tenting ... have you ever touched the side walls and had them start dripping?? or bought a tent that was supposed to be water proof but wake up to it dripping on you in the middle of a storm at 2 am ?? none of that is fun .. so although there is a noise issue to be solved ... its dry
And as far as the comments about the homeless cooking meth with the burner .. I used to work with homeless people and I've known plenty that don't do drugs and would love a way to heat water for a cup of coffee first thing in the morning or a way to heat a can of soup on a crappy rainy day .. maybe you should try not judging everyone as being the same
I think this is a great concept Loved the first one the best still.
TENTS ARE NOT SAFE !!
Judy Sparks I agree vvith you 110% Having been homeless & having done outreach after I got myself a place I knovv hovv heavily stigmatized the homeless can be . There may be a fevv bad apples ( the same as the rest of society ) but that doesnt mean all homeless people are bad . And the Majority that did recieve a shelter like this vvould definately help them have a place to stay vvhile raising their self esteem & give them some privacy so they can change their clothing & possibley get a full nights sleep because they felt safe & secure enough to relax & actually rest. Also I allvvays vvant a cup of coffee in the morning & cant blame Anyone vvho does regardless of their domestic situation, & TY for having donated your time to help your fellovv human beings
@@dianabeurman364 In what way?
@@rogerwhite9484 Sure tents are certainly safe, but the problem here is that you can't expect to survive long term in a tent. It will degrade after a few months of constant exposure to the elements. Tents just aren't designed for long term use. This guy's concept would last a whole lot longer and be a comfortable retreat on long cold nights.
@@MeNoOther So homelessness is good we just need to make it more mobile.
I've been homeless. It is a feeling that terrifies me to the core. Let me say the feeling of vulnerability is the worst. The elements the second and needing good sleep the third.
To be able to have a protection around you, a place you can lock, a place for what little you do have and depend on is like hitting the lottery. These are safe havens and will allow for these people to regroup and move forward. God Bless you and your brain, most of all the inspiration you have given.

At least your hearts in the right place.. How many that complained even " tried " to help or build something instead of complain. ( People )!!
It’s enough to keep you dry and it works .. I’d rather be in that then have nothing.. Good job
Agreed, especially in the rain. This has a lot of practical applications for safety, extreme temps, public health.
What a blessing people like this man is. His thoughts are for other people. He puts a plan in action. This could save lives. It keeps homeless persons out of the elements. It beats what my community does...pass-out cheap blankets (one each) only during dangerously frigid weather. Though, I understand, that is the most that many of us can do to help. But we ARE helping. Please don't dis-incentivize people with your criticism; after all, most criticisers are not themselves doing ANYTHING (let's be honest). I am proud of the people who make a difference. I certainly would not knock their good intentions. They are compassionate people. Remember...if you want to stand out, do something. The vast majority of us don't. I hear people complain "God didn't make ME special" (as a veiled complaint that there are rich and powerful people in the world, so why look to me?).
Actually pretty nice idea and Im sure there are alot of homeless out there that would hugely appreciate something like this
Hopefully. But you don't always get gratitude. You might get venom, angry people screaming "Why don't YOU" live in that and give us your nice big house you stole from We The People, you rich [expletive, expletive, expletive] term-of-choice, term-of-choice. Sad, but yes, this happens uncommonly often. I bought a curbside man a McDonald's meal once and he screamed at me and tried to attack me. Anyone trying to help needs to be aware of this issue.
@@bjharrison4460 That's fully correct and I experienced exactly the same thing as voluntarily working on a homeless project in Berlin, Germany. We have to be aware that many of those people have serious psychological problems - so keep on helping and supporting whereever possible and don't expect anything
Until your neighborhood sidewalks are covered with these things. How is this any different from tents on the sidewalk.
So many negative comment from people who DIDN'T think of this or WOULDN'T think twice about helping the less fortunate. This is a great idea. God bless you, sir. I hope a wealthy individual sees this and endorses your effort.

I would've loved something like this for me and my cat, when we were homeless! Its beautiful! Thank you, sir, for your hard work helping others!!
Paul Elkins, you made me laugh and get goosebumps all at the same time. A homeless shelter made out of corrugated plastic. Hilariously wonderful, smart, caring, kind, generous, amazing, and inspiring. I may give this idea shot as well. Keep up the great work and thank you for sharing the knowledge!
Wow! You criticized your great effort and worthy project, but if you only knew how many people living on the street would love to hear the sound of rain on the roof over their head. (Someone complained about their shoes until they met a man with no feet) You should be very proud of this project and submit your prototype to an inventions promo co. The thought alone deserves credit and the effort, labor and special attention to detail is award winning! There's not enough being done to combat homelessness. I think you should push this project. I can actually see a row of these maybe a foot apart, side by side, colorful flowers in between each unit. Maybe I'm overboard, but this is an extremely thoughtful project that shouldn't be taken for granted.
I love this concept. It does allow for some flexibility in the design. I would have loved to have something like this when I was homeless.

If you're ever homeless, this would be paradise. Thank you for designing this. I hope someone will fund this. Government, hello?
Don't bother asking government for anything. Its not really in their interests to help. The best job done is if we do it ourselves.
How could someone get help getting something like this ?
@@konorbug7408 Best thing would be to build it yourself, you can use cardboard and duck-tape as well.. Problem is not the shelter, I feel, but the fact that officials will not recognise it as a shelter..
In Holland there is now a curfew. Officially Homeless are exempt from having to abide it, but many officials still get them for just loitering. Having a shelter doesn´t really help then.

May God bless you my friend. You actually spent a night in it! In Islam there is the concept of don't give to others what you yourself would not want to receive.. Your shelter is well designed and well thought out. You went further into the realm of human kindness in the thoughtful additions you included like the light, carbon monoxide detector, airflow considerations. This really emanates from the mind of a man of excellence. May God not only bless you, but accept you and your life's work as a Service and a Gift to Him. Well done Paul Elkins!

regardless of how the homeless would or wouldn't use it, I think it's a great idea for cheap extended camping.
everything helps. Some talk the talk, when others walk the walk
This man iui s walking to the beat of his own drums....indeed
Put locking wheels on it and a tow strap & the homeless can pull it behind them to their next sleeping space! Tearing it down to move it would be too much trouble...just sayin! Very creative....
I think this would be perfect for churches or VFW's to buy and place on their properties and allow the homeless to have them as a secure place during the winter season for free . But give them the option of renting / buying them . I know it would only work in towns that allowed it but what a great first step to help the homeless . I'm sure the church and vfw would have people who own businesses that could hire them for jobs . I'm sure it would go a long way in helping them gain self esteem . A little town of homeless houses would be great . I saw a video once on here where they did Just that. They had gardens , a laundry , portable bathrooms, a general store . They had rules about drinking and drugs . Even had a AA meeting place I think . The buildings weren't as small as these . They were tiny homes . Those even had tvs. With everything going on and help being taken away left and right, seeing these videos gives me hope that there are still more of us than them
God bless This man for helping the homeless
WOW!! You Sir are a Genius, plus caring about unfortunate people. Great Job Paul!
This man is a compassionate man ,thank you for helping the homeless ,I too have been homeless before
Cool idea. Couple of thoughts. Put a layer of 1" to 3" waterproof, closed cell foam (depending om insulation needs) sandwiched in between the hard plastic outter and inner shell. Same thing on the bottom. It would be quieter an warmer. Make sure somebody inside couldn't get locked inside. I like it!
These are great. I live in Baltimore city, and the homeless rate is unbelievable. After nearly becoming homeless myself, literally through no fault of my own, I realized how quickly someone could lose everything. I then found that directly across the street from me, there was a very well hidden homeless camp. I'm not great at building structures, but I've built twig stoves, gasification stoves and tent stoves for a very long time, so I did what I could. Eventually the city came in and moved them out: I still wonder about those HUMAN BEINGS! Baltimore has done some horrendous things to the homeless, and these little shelters could have saved so many lives. God bless you for your selflessness!
You have done a great job and as far as it being loud when it rained like you said " at least your dry" thats right not wet and cold. Good job.
And a .25 cent pair of earplugs could be included. That could help as well. But as you say, "at least you're dry".
Besides, the sound of the rain is a lovely sound. Especially when you're warm and dry and sheltered. Gets you straight off to sleep.
@@woomeebly That is so true.. I love listening to the rain, it makes me sleepy

Thanks Ant B. I did have a few brief times as a young adult (making it on my own) where times were tough, living off onions and potatoes or a granola mix or nothing at all for a few days. I lived in a bread truck for a while and other times I was roughing it. It does tend to change your perspective.
Paul Elkins - You are a beautiful soul ! The world will be a better place with more people like you.👏👏👏
This will make such a difference for the homeless, so simple in design and construction, but more importantly safe and warm, better than sleeping on the street, the only problem that may arise is the site for the tiny home, good job sir.
Great idea...what’s not to like warmth, security , and dryness. Love the idea👍
dude thanks for trying to help, I see a lot of negative comments about why you would want to help people which is frankly stunning in an age of decreased Govt support and proven increase of poverty. No one would chose to live in a blanket on a concrete step, there's always a reason why and the first step to lifting a person up is a helping hand like this. Thank you for being human.
You have a beautiful caring heart ❤️
May you be blessed. What a beatiful way to spend your time, resources and talent.
If I was rich.. I would fund this for mass production

To be honest I would live in that
I would too
Me to
Me definitely
Me too. Why not?! In some safe place like parking place or trailer park which would allowed it. I would have a warm, soft secure place to sleep and could leave my things there during the day. It is a great idea and much better and much safer than a tent.
Yeah man take it out to a fields near were I live just camp out there
If you want a little insulation might try sandwiching some bubble wrap between first and second outer covers, might even deaden the rain noises
tha vvolf or ass holes.pising.on them
How positive you are, Martin.
THAT is one good-sounding idea. Use Reflectix products and you can both add some R-value and gain radiant heat.
Many Hospitals have temperature-sensitive items delivered using aluminised / metallised "industrial" strength bubble-wrap, and this stuff is VERY good from an insulation viewpoint. Usually available free of charge (it gets disposed of as recyclable waste). Two layers of this would provide very significant insulation performance.
The bubble wrap is also a help for insulation.
Sir, thank you for building the sleeping pod. I’m sure it is something that could save a life when used.

For a homeless that sleeps in the cold and rain, I think it is very good. Great idea!

Great cheap idea and a positive result to shelter issues....even for the homeless! 🤔Thanks for your effort and result.👍👏
What's so cheap about it? $200 in materials, not counting the tools to build it. Or, one can get a 4-man tent, tarp, sleeping bag, backpack, and a change of clothes for much less at most second-hand stores.
This melts my heart that someone with a home has took the time to help someone alot of someone's so there not sleeping on the cold street the ones who are making negative comments here what have you done for the homeless or anyone in need not only now but ever God Bless this man and the great job he did such a great idea and for probably lower cost than them crappy tents I can't say thank you enough for the work you have done here

Bro sounded like Bob Ross went to heaven and built homeless shelters. Great job. very nice... thank you.
True! I wish he would paint happy little trees on it while narrating with his soothing voice 😀
I sure do appreciate your efforts, what a lovely gesture. I work in a hospital in Los Angeles County that primarily treats homeless and mentally ill patients. Most homeless people are not homeless because they lack fundamental resources for shelter. This is profoundly difficult and complex. While these shelters would seemingly provide a first step in achieving security and a foundation to progress from, I can tell you that for sure they would be destroyed or made unsanitary in very short order. There is a diagnosis called "gravely disabled" that needs to be legislatively addressed. People who are truly gravely disabled need to be committed to chronic care facilities. Most will not agree to this, especially in a country like ours where personal freedom is fundamental to the fabric of society. As impossibly expensive as that may seem, I assure you it is cheaper than the continuous ER and temporary treatment that they receive now. Again, I applaud your selflessness. You are a very good man.
Man you got it down pat. I've live in a similar confined space for the last 15 yrs. In the summertime your right would be uncomfortable hot , but better that than out in the woods. in the winter time a foam panel under the mattress and if located in a church yard electric hair dryer would be a luxury , great for sticking underneath ones shirt to evaporated lingering sweat which causes shivering. I have a propane " Buddy Heater" using only the pilot light, with a blanket slung over it and me. very comfortable and with the " Buddy's safety cage "never ignite the blanket. Great job, prefect planning
My thought on charging $5 created quite a dialog. Lots of good ideas. Thanks to all who participated.Remember the 'three little pigs' story? This is not a tent and not a traditional building but something in between, that can be created by not so skilled workers.Again, the main idea here was to utilize cheap materials to create a foldable, semi solid, semi insulated structure that's also semi lockable for night time use in the winter. The thought was to have churches or Shelters create and host these in their parking lots for night time use only, helping those individuals who are traditionally turned away at shelters due to being full. The idea of charging was a thought, but more to hear various opinions on the idea. I'm in the Seattle area where real estate is kind of expensive, so $5 didn't seem much. I did like the idea of having the recipient help out making the shelter.
doesn't seem practical for the homeless...they would just hide out in there, do drugs in it, stink it up/destroy it... seems to be more of just a fun project idk that it could be put to much practical use.
Paul I have to agree with David Costa - they'd stink it up, destroy it, take out their frustrations in it. Best thing to do is create a structure that can be literally hosed out and has nothing inside it that can be destroyed
Seattle here too = been homeless due to wheelchair needs; that was hard for years but had a van. place to be is hardest part. Much LOVE ~
Maybe you should switch to salads. have the homeless guy build it then watch the pride they will have with it.
Jerry's Chronicles now that's a great idea
Wonderful idea, this would be great 4 homeless. I agree. U could build 1 building as a office meet , cook building. and have these to sleep in. I love this idea
Kitty Harvey the People that would be inhabiting these homes are mostly mentally ill. the first thing they would do is deactivate the co'2 detector. not well ventilated despite. the claim.
Thank you for sharing your wonderful invention for those who so desperately need it. Sending you lots of light energy to create many more.
I would hinge the front and rear walls to the floor as well as the other hardwood items inside so they could be folded flat and need no screws or nails to assemble. The coroplast could be slid into grooves on each side at the base then also latched into place. Maybe a small solar panel for power? This could be a no tools required field assembly kit if designed correctly.
I did not think OBS board was not weather proof. Actually I know from previous experience OSB is not weather proof
I'd also create a hole right in the middle to provide a place where the feces and urine can flow.

This is an amazing idea!! So meany people just need a little help now an then!! Great video!!
You, sir, have set a great example by using ingenuity to create something for those who are in a difficult situation. Instead of judging others for their difficulties, you created a solution to help. You aren't offering to make people rich, but instead you are offering a way to change a very unsafe situation into something a little bit safer and a little more comfortable.
In The Bible, Jesus told a story of men who responded to his requests for help, by either helping, or denying help. When the men asked when they ever saw him in need, he responded "to the extent that you did it to the least of these my brothers, you did it to me." While I am not Christian, this story resonates with me. Those who are in greatest need are just as deserving of humane treatment, as are those who have an abundance. It may be easier to help someone who is clean, and has a job, has almost everything a comfortable life has to offer.
It’s lovely xx
Rebecca Scotland , this is an absolute death trap. not enough ventilation, homeless would deactivate the co'2 detector so they can smoke. think people!!!.
Rebecca Scotland why don't you just give them a room in your home? wwjd?
Spencer Hewlett co2 detectors don't go off for cigarette or marijuana smoke.
Spencer Hewlett there's not enough co2 coming from the smoke to detect it
What a beautiful heart and soul you have. God bless you sir. ❤️🙏
This is an awesome shelter! Very nice design and great price.
I used your design to make a small dog shelter last year. I worked great!
Fantastic idea. What a lovely man, he has a good heart
Paul Elkins I think it's a wonderful idea to help the homeless, well done to you.
Iv lived the homeless life for a year and i have to say noise or no noise i would have loved it as i was homeless in winter with rain snow and the bitter cold. Many nights i woke damp or even wet though. So if anyone says anything wrong or bad then try for a year and thanks for anything you would say. I was really young at the time, kicked to the streets by my own mother with nothing but the cloths on my back. Thanks to a friends mother i was helped, Found on a bench wishing my life would end. Now im good. I always wonder would the world be a better place if people lived homeless just for a year. Then respect to others and personals would still have a value. Help these days is so hard to find when put in this position, For many reason and some most will never know... You will go to a great place when you end
Thanks for that Ricky. Not everyone has had the opportunity to be homeless. We need more testimonials like this. Maybe some city councilman or woman will read them and learn.
No thanks required, Keep up the good work as one would say. Maybe one day ?
Love and hugs.
Ricky Peachey Such an inspirational recount. I can't help thinking there is a great movie to be made of your life too. Most of us have no idea what it's like living like that. I ran from an extremely violent 1st husband and had to sleep under the stars for just 2 nights and that was bad enough. Sending you giant hugs and best wishes...
You didn't say WHY your mom kicked you out. Glad you're no longer homeless, I hope you are supporting yourself, not other working Americans. Best of luck!
My head bound to you sir! I really admire your kind heart to homeless people. I wish I could afford many of them to send to Vancouver, Saint Diago, as well as the third countries.
San Lam two panels of concrete mesh place tarp between them, secure around edges, bend panels into arch. This is least costly shelter. Cattle panels are good also.
That is such a thoughtful project. May God bless you and the homeless Americans.
If I were homeless I would think this pod as a blessing from God by a good Samaritan !
Bless you for your kind heart and soul
