Hey Scott, here's some food for thought. I agree that you had a heat problem on the one side of the engine. However; you need to take into consideration that there is a crossove tube between the thermostat housings. This is to help balance the flow of coolant just in case a t-stat fails for any reason. One of the best ways to determine if the engine was over heated is to locate remove the "fuse plug" in the head if the center of the fuse plug is melted out, the engine was definitely run hot. The fuse plug(s) are located on the exhaust side of the head, above either #2 or #3 cylinder it appears as a 1/8" NPT plug with a straight slot. Remove and have a look. Regards, Tinshack
I also think rebuilding the 1 bank was a good call, given the damage. However, I don't believe the cause of the damage was over-heat. I believe that it was water-diluted oil, from coolant leaking in, through the cracked sleeves. I could be wrong.
Jerry’s voice commentary about Tyler and Scott’s personal repair interaction with the Wonderlodge was just hilarious. Scott and Tyler’s attention to doing repairs right is so commendable and should give customers peace of mind.
Yes! Awesome comic relief. And yes, I agree with the half re build. It would make no sense to do the whole engine. If it were close to being worn out, and one side had damage, that would be a different story.
When putting in fences with gates we always used a second vertical post to either side of the opening with a solid (another post or heavy section of pipe diagonally between them and heavy galvanized wire wrapped and tightened on the opposite diagonal. This was done to prevent or minimized sagging of the gates over time. Just a thought. Great video as usual. Keep up the good work!
Sorry for the trespassers on the property. Might want to add a set of wheels to the swinging end of those gates, the posts aren't going to support the strain very long.
The worst part of a lack of respect for property is that it bleeds over to the owners. A wise man once said, "Any society that will burn books will eventually burn authors".
Scott, I really appreciate your honesty. If I had one of these classic beauties, you and Tyler would be the only team that I would trust with repairs and routine maintenance. Solid team and God bless you all. Stay safe.

That thermostat likely replaced at some point... As Eric O says "just because it's new doesn't mean it's good" Lucky the head didn't crack from being overheated. Rebuilding one bank is getting away kinda lucky.
Scott Good evening Thank You so much for sharing this with Us It is great that You have so much knowledge about this engines that You are able to solve the problem on a reasonable budget Thank You
Shame you had to put the gate up but quite understandable. Mighty Car Mods ended up moving to a secret location because folks wouldn't leave them alone to work.
Scott, nice forensics on the right side of the engine and great clear video. As to the trespassers, way to go. Fence the zero's out. Go to Tractor Supply or Harbor Freight and get several small rubber wheels to affix to the two swing gates to keep them from dragging. That will make it easier for your wife to muscle them open/closed each time too. Take care BGM!
Did you win the lottery Scott? Snap-on when you absolutely, positively have to have the most expensive tools on the market. (chuckle, chuckle) (I'm gonna be blasted for saying that)
Jerry has a voice that can convey humour without rancour, The section regarding Scott and Tylers dissasembly was really enjoyable. Only half a rebuild so find the right agency and im sure Jerry can recoup his costs with voice over work. Seriously that thermostat partial fail, is that the origonal or a replacement that failed . Not many miles compared with the usual engines needing attention on this channel.
The DDEC averages the coolant temperature between the two sensors for the stock dash gauge. I installed temperature sensors, with readout on both heads, along with EGT and radiator coolant outlet temperature readout on my DDEC powered coach. Just a thought to help avoid this kind of event...
Good information! I would think that if you wanted to get by with just one temperature gauge it should be designed to display the highest temperature measured among multiple sensors, not the average.
Hi if the coolants been hot on that bank replace the coolant pump plastic plate as it bows out then becomes inefficient as the impeller to plastic plate clearance is to big and always fit 170 thermostats with new seals, keep up the good work.
Personally If I were the owner of that Wanderlodge I would take a some of the money saved on not replacing the pistons and sleeves and go a head and consider replacing the all the rod bearing and also install a temperature sending unit and separate gauge for both engines banks as well as exhaust pyrometers on both engine banks. I am a firm believer that the more gauges the better (within reason of course)
Maybe the sign ought to say Trespassers will be shot on sight. A tad more costly option is to have an audio system the broadcast the sounds of lions in the area and the sign should read Lion Sanctuary, enter at your own risk.
If it ain't broke....don't fix it. Nice to see you only doing what "needs" to be done. Most shops would have told him the entire motor needs to be done. PS...good fences(and gates) make good neighbors
anyone that owns one of these motors can make this a preventative maintenance check by checking the head temp on both sides to see if they are the same temp
Hey Scott, you need "H" braces at either side of the gate posts or in a little while you will be carrying those gates to open or close them, and that gets OLD very quickly... I really enjoy your videos!
Shame when this happens, thermostat attempts to destroy an engine. Same thing happened to my gas Land Rover freelander. To be honest most older vehicles temp gauges are there more for entertainment than actual accurate readings lol. Half of them will sit dead centre telling you everything is “just fine” whilst the cylinder head simultaneously boils to death and warps just as mine did. Was a fun weekend rebuilding it. I always recommend fitting an additional digital numeric read out sensor and gauge on anything that has the ability to destroy itself. Least then you get a warning.
Nice catch on the t-stat. Personally if the other bank looked perfect I would also just repair what’s needed for a couple hundred thousand miles. It’d be different if you’re talking about 20-30k mile differences. Sad to hear that Jeep having trespassers but it looks like the Gates didn’t keep that expensive Snap-on truck out.😜 Another great video Scott. Keep ‘me coming. Mike
Retired Truck driver remembering that the 92 's hated heat even more then the 71's and as Scott said more then once the 6-71 are the best . Scott can you run Jerry's motor without a thermostat or will that screw things
Just shows that you can't have enough sensors. I just put a temp gauge on my Skidsteer and found out I've had a leak for ever? Never ran into the over limit but I had no way to see how it was cooling. $18.00 and Ebay later, I do now! It was also a gallon low on fluid. Be nice to put a sensor on both sides of the engine.
All of the bus owners have been missing out on all of the brand new and reman 2 stroke Detroit Diesel engines that the military has been liquidating. My friend bought up 4 8v92ta crate engines and a few Allison ht751 transmission for next to nothing. He was able to get the engines for like $2500 each and the transmissions for like $1000 each. There is just so little demand for them these days.
Interesting neighbors you have there. I'd share the trespassers video on UA-cam and maybe he'll think twice next time using your property for his pleasures. Considering where your property sits, I'm actually surprised he drove so far away to do his business when there is a public park just right down the road. Have fun with that old Detroit iron which was one of my favorites until the DDEC-4 S60 I have now came along. Speaking of, after having a six pack installed a few weeks back, and them refusing to replace injector cups, now it has to return to shop, pull the head, and replace all six cups due to anti-freeze leaking down into either cyl-5 or cyl-6. My diesel shop is getting on my nerves but no one else in Indianapolis who know how to work on a Series 60.
Gee, I work for a dealer. I would recommend rebuilding the entire engine and while we are in it rebuild the transmission and the air system and brakes. Oh yeah, I noticed the windshield was dirty and I would suggest replacing it.
I hope the owner springs up for the extra $20 for a couple of temperature readouts on both engine banks... The driver's position already looks like a 1950s bomber cabin, so one more dial won't make a difference.
Was he loosing coolant? I learned a long time ago to change hoses belts and thermostat every 3 to 4 year to avoid failure of these parts and the damage cause by that. Also check fluids at least monthly. You will get an early warning of failures to come.
BGM better come to Melbourne Victoria Australia and fix the Victoria Police Booze Bus (Drug & Alcohol Testing) Fleet - Whole fleet of new Booze Buses plagued with problems and now off the road again for rectification.
Two thermostats on these?!? complicated! I understand the problem with scored cylinders, but what is the effect of scored pistons? of course they shouldn't be scored in the first place, but what problem does it cause? do the scores rub on the cylinder walls, causing more compression loss/oil burning? also, a 3point post hole digger is the best tool ever!
Heat expands... pistons expand, liners expand and the two meet in the middle. The pistons try to seize and grab and that’s usually what breaks the liners and of course causes the scoring.
I'd replace both sides since your in it already. Are pro's on each side of exhaust? That will keep heat in check. Does the owner know about drive by Pyro? When I am driving my Dodge with a Cummins and towing that something I must do.
1980 MC9,Crusader II ,8V71n DD. Hey guys, Dig your Channel and vids. 2 year bus owner here, Is it really 13k per side to replace the piston sleeves? Did i hear that right? I am due for some engine love but at that price i may have to park it sadly.

Yep it's always the cheapest part failing that causes the largest repair bill, I've lost count of how many times bus companies I've worked for have trashed perfectly good engines cause they were too tight to replace a 50c washer or a $10 belt.
They have a sensor on that side. But it does not go to a gauge on dash. Computer my guess. Not sure what it’s set to. Had 38 over heat codes stored i believe
Hey Scott seeing as it has been over heating I think the valve stem oil seals will need replacing ??? as am sure they will have gone hard and brittle ?? Just a thought
Was the snap on truck one of the trespassers you’re trying to keep out? While is sucks about the thermostat It is always nice to find a cause for the problems
Yes it could have overheated before and the previous owner s mechanic could have said the left bank needed replacement as a min repair to get going when in fact both sides needed replacement at the prior time. The cleanliness of the piston and rings looks very low mileage imo.
I’m up here in Canada living out of my truck saving money to by a bus . Can somebody please tell me what engine should I be looking for . The price for a 3800 4e was $4500 with leaking hose rad and it wouldn’t start the guy wanted hit it with either . Like that was no big deal. 400 thousand Klm
Shouldn’t there a temp sensor to prevent this type of damage? How about a 12 gauge double barrel?

What a saving for the owner. He has to be happy with that.

Legally, signs like that indicate "intent".
Good call doing just the damaged side. Being an RV, it will serve many, many years.
Crazy about the trespassing. The gates are a good idea. 👍
If it ain't broke....don't fix it. Nice to see you only doing what "needs" to be done. Most shops would have told him the entire motor needs to be done. PS...good fences(and gates) make good neighbors
Could you install a water temp gauge for the other bank, that way you could catch something like this early?
Hmm my 72 eagle has dual temp gauges, one on each side of the head
Since the heads have separate t-stats, you'd think it should at least have sensors/overheat sensors for both sides.
It looks like there is a sensor right next to the thermostat.
Gauges are great but should also have a blinking light and or buzzer when there is an issue. Who watches every gauge constantly?
anyone that owns one of these motors can make this a preventative maintenance check by checking the head temp on both sides to see if they are the same temp

Barbed wire will certainly be effective in keeping the NAKED trespassers out...
razor wire is more effective.
