Jack is actually playing lot of Dickey and Duane's solos from Fillmore East, Liz Reed, You Don't Love Me, and Whipping Post, with King Curtis's Soul Serenade. Derek knows those solos just as well. Jack's embellishments are astounding, but no surprise if you were fortunate to see him with the ABB the year before Derek joined. He particularly shone on both versions of Dreams I saw him play, one of them 30 minutes. He and Dickey Betts went after each other all night long in a wonderful guitargument. Jack's tinnitus issues have kept him from the recognition he deserves.

Around 8 mins you see Derek look down on the ground(and Michael asks “a wah on it?”) but it’s actually this thing he does with his nails mimicking a wah sound. He does it on Marty’s guitar show and I’ve seen him show it on his IG. Pretty wild

I would love to find a video of Derek doing the old Col. Bruce low E string trick and see what Michael has to say about that one. I haven't been able to find a good one, just audio that if you don't know what he's doing is otherworldly.

He was watching a pedal steel player he liked pretty much all night.
He literally stayed till close and last 1/2 hour was him up with the band basically talking with Eddie (pedal steel player) musically until close.
There was like 10 ppl in the bar and it was best night musically for me.

The “key change” is a song called ‘Soul Serenade’. The Allman Brothers Band used to throw that in during some songs also. I’ve mainly heard it in the song ‘You Don’t Love Me’ like from the A&R studios gig bootleg from ‘71. Jack put it in there as a nod to butch and the brothers for Derek, I believe.
*EDIT* sorry for repeating the same thing others have said. I didn’t check the comments before leaving mine. D’oh!

What a great way to start a Saturday morning Michael. Hard to believe how many paths the rhythms and key changes went through but I loved how “in the pocket” the drums were throughout that entire section you went through. Loved how Jack uses dynamics as well from slower softer phrasings to just flat out ripping and screams...Congratulations on your channel and how you are mixing your pure love of music and musicianship with music theory,

Michael - I share your enthusiasm and thanks for posting. Jack Pearson is one of the best guitarist on the planet and captures Duane’s phrasing like no one else. He pulled the best out of Derek on this night and Derek’s slide sounded like Duane on steroids. I’ve played Allman music on my guitar for 40 years - wearing out a Les Paul and a few Fillmore vinyls learning every lead - so I know what it takes to capture the energy. This was the best Elizabeth Reed I’ve ever heard.

I'm biased: but my favorite video yet!
Thank you for introducing others to Jack! I'm glad that fella wrote you. Big thanks to him as well. I don't know how many people are aware that Jack's hand technique reproduces sounds you would hear with some pedals. His tone is more natural though. Too bad he had to leave the Brothers because Dickey was too loud on stage & it worsened Jack's tinitus.
Oh it was so sweet to hear them go into King Curtis' Soul Serenade just like the ABB did.

Jack Pearson and Tommy Emmanuel jams are legit.. you're watching 2 masters push each other to the end of the improvisational earth to get the best out of each other.

Had no idea who the cap wearing guitarist was with Dickey Betts when the ABB hit the stage in the mid-90s. Found out, though.

I'm glad Jack's on your radar Michael. He's the guy a guy like you should be paying attention to. I live in Nashville, and all my favorite players - when they want to be inspired - they go see Jack. He's on a whole other level for sure - and even if you've achieved mastery of your instrument - he can teach you a thing or two.
He does all kinds of tricks with the instrument as well, I bet you when he did that wah thing he was doing it with his fingers - I've seen him to it live without even having a pedal. He can do a delay like that too - it's super cool.
Take some time if you can and find some of his other stuff on UA-cam people have uploaded - I'm sure it will give you some great ideas for lessons.

    12:39 "What in god's name...?"
Incredible performance and really enjoyed the reaction. While the AV tech side sucked, the vid certainly carried the emotion and energy coming off that stage on what must have been a very difficult time. I went to the full vid and listened to the 1st half then came back here - well worth a listen. Pearson is a beast. Thanks yet again MP.
EDIT: I just realized why Pearson is so familiar to me - he was the lead guitarist for Renegade, a very popular bar band in the late 70s who did stints here in Fl (note there were like 5 bands called Renegade!). I must've seen him several times as a teenager, but only now connected it after reading his bio. Amazing.
