@@spencerwells1328 in the Cola realm the there were many regional variants. Now most people only think of 2 really but at one point almost every soda jerk had a special recipe. The reason why I cited RC is Dr. Pepper, A&W, Canada Dry and RC Cola started in my neck of the woods within decades of each other. Rhett and Link always talk about Pepsi being the pride of the Carolinas. Well we New Englanders are pretty proud of RC.

That was a brilliant piece of filmmaking, but I couldn't watch the whole thing. I can't handle the sounds of people eating in otherwise dead silence.
I have this conspiracy theory that Josh destroyed all his taste buds with creatine or mass builder shakes and he's now completely unable to taste any food. He hides it very well with his extensive culinary skill and knowledge, so he makes food that tastes good. He just can't actually taste it himself. I wish I could cite more sources for my conspiracy theory but I guess you'll have to do your own research.
Would also explain the craziness behind his eyes.

Root beer is one of the 23 flavors it's just that there's 21 more than described in this video which all balance together so it doesn't just taste like root beer

Dr. Pepper is fruitier than either Coke or any root beer and I've never dectected any sasparilla or sassafras in it.
Okay but on the topic of soda beers personally I think birch beer is the best followed by sarsaparilla. Traditional root beer is still good on occasion though.
That would be because Dr. Pepper's original flavor is listed as "spicy cherry soda" or "spicy cherry cola" (I forget which, but cherry is always in the name).

@@kermi1004 I can't really find any evidence for that. It seems generally agreed upon that the cola flavor was invented by Pemberton in 1886 and only adopted by other brands after that
He said the mix was cola, not coke specifically, i think he just used coke because it's the best tasting cola that you can find easily at any corner store

I don't drink soda anymore, 10 years off of caffeine. I tried this and no it doesn't work. the amount of fizz when combining has no flavor like Dr. pepper . It tastes like burnt sugar

The flavors I think are in there, in no particular order: cola, cherry, vanilla, birch root, spearmint, bergamot, citric acid, texas, anise, licorice, marshmallow, grapefruit, liver disaster, morning thunder, & sleepy time.
Did the math and this checks out. Def adds to 23, (Texas accounting for 9).

@@porcupineracer2 maybe dr pepper is like wine. The more you drink it the more you start to notice the difference in flavour. People that drink a good amount of it may be the ones that feel like they're nothing alike.
Had them all in the fridge, tried it out of curiosity. Even got out a scale to make sure the ratio was exactly 2:1. In my opinion it's not the same, A&W comes through really strong. It's not a terrible mix, but not Dr Pepper.
Not to mention no prune in Coke or A&W

Being a heavy Dr. Pepper addict, I tried this myself with exact measurements and I can say it is absolutely nothing like Dr. Pepper.. I laugh to myself that some think they taste the same. The artistry and complexity put into the Dr. Pepper recipe is simply unmatchable..

When I was a kid and dad took us to McDonald’s he’d have us get him half Dr Pepper and half root beer. We called it dr beer, love those memories with my whole heart

I never liked root beer. It has sarsaparilla in it which is also a key ingredient in black licorice. And black licorice is nasty. But I’ve always liked Dr. Pepper. Strange thing happened when I just drank Dr. Pepper by itself and not after eating. I noticed the sarsaparilla flavor, which led me here. Now I’m questioning all of my life decisions 😫

When you mix two spiced brown sodas, it will taste like a spiced brown soda, but to imply any similarity beyond that doesn't really check out for me, since I hate the flavor of root beer, and like the flavor of Dr. Pepper. I also don't think the 2/1 coke root beer mix tastes like Dr. Pepper.

"sarsaparilla" there's where he's getting his idea for it being root beer - Dr Pepper and most Root Beers probably use the same sarsaparilla substitute flavorings to get that old timey flavor (since I know they don't use actual sarsaparilla these days). But its still going to be lacking a lot of other flavors. Adding sarsaparilla flavor to coke does not a dr pepper make.

I actually don’t like the restaurant version, at least not like the gallon or half gallon ones. It always seemed to have less carbonation to me… maybe it was just a shitty location but even out of the fountain it always seemed flatter to me.

I was convinced that the original Mountain Dew Game Fuel was just 1:1 Code Red and Livewire. It even came out the right color.

My buddy used to make home made Dr peppers. He would take different sodas and mix them together. It was spot on. Just coke and root beer doesn't do it. You need cherry and vanilla and a couple other notes to get it right.

Fun Fact : Moxie came out in 1876, which is a decade before Coke. It is still around, and enjoyed by many of us Mainers. They even made a version of it in the popular video game Fallout 4- in the dlc Far Harbor. So neither are the oldest soda around.

I have a conspiracy theory that Josh is a robot because that's definitely not what that tastes like. Dr. Pepper is quite fruity and some of its major notes are plum and vanilla.

2 drinks mixed together isn’t a conspiracy theory
I don’t own an MS but I have access to one and I could probably see if we could allow a student to get a profile from each of the three. Wouldn’t be any time soon I think it would be harder than just extracting them though. So many compounds that might end up in a solvent but not another. Also tons of sugar. Very long column needed
If you could do it in parts, remove some known compounds then pass it through the column and do it again but remove some other parts and do it multiple times and then put all the data toghether
That's why it's called a multi-spectrometer it should be easy enough, when access is to it is gained, to pass coke through then root beer though it may not be A&W most likely it would have back then been what they call sassafras or sarsaparilla root beer, because that is the oldest *root beer* drink that was called a *"soft drink"* no alcohol all the way back to the early 1400s but who knows for sure, people have been making different kinds of drinks from seeds and roots and plants and flowers for along time. But I'd be willing to bet that it was sarsaparilla and not necessarily root beer as it is known today because most people haven't even heard of it before at least not since I was a kid drinking it but I can definitely believe coca cola syrup and sassafras would definitely taste like Dr Pepper. Because I always thought Dr. Pepper tasted familiar .

You would have to do a number of mass spec analysis using both volatile and semi-volatile methodologies. See EPA methods 8260 and 8270

There's a trick I learned a long time ago when customers really want ginger ale and you don't have any to serve you can give them Sprite with a squirt of coke. This was usually reserved for difficult customers and was an easy way to make them happy
Its true as a former bartened I used to do that all the time.
That is well known with bartenders, however you are supposed to add a dash of bitters as well, that's what gives it the traditional bitter bite of ginger

At the Dr. Pepper bottling plant and museum in Dublin, Texas(this was years ago), the story was the Dr. Pepper was a suicide of several different sodas at a fountain where he worked and later he replicated that flavor himself. This is perhaps why I found this unremarkable coming from you, because I already believe it to be true.
Not a Dr Pepper bottling company now. Sadly, They can’t make or bottle Dr Pepper in Dublin, Texas anymore. Snapple Dr Pepper threatened to sue them. All Dr Pepper is a sarsaparilla.

I agree we need to get John on this. Not to confirm it, or even that we need it denied. Honestly if I pour Dr Pepper over ICE that has touched A&W, it no longer tastes like Dr Pepper. But we all just loved John's reactions in his taste test and we want to see his look of puzzlement, pity, and irrational rage, all at once.

The main flavor when it was first created was the cherry syrup used at the soda fountain, not prune juice.
I tried it and all I taste is root beer. It's probably because I have an extreme distaste for root beer so even when I taste or smell a little I get grossed out. Dr Pepper is far superior

Does brand matter? Commonly unknown fact. Nearly all root beers (at least in America) are caffeine free, but not Barq's brand. Except diet Barq's root beer, which like nearly all other versions of root beer, is caffeine free
Kinda the same with orange soda. Sunkist is the only caffinated orange soda as far as I've seen
