Hello, I know this is a bit of an older post, but I'm curious as to how you were able to have a landscaping business at 13, as you wouldn't have been able to drive at that point. Did you only operate in your neighborhood, did your parents drive you to people's houses, ect. Just wondering since I'm not old enough to drive quite yet and am looking at possible income opportunities. Thank you for your time, have a great rest of your day!
@game-rat I think he was referring more to the maintenance work. At that age, your local neighbourhood and area would be your best bet. Maybe offer mowing, whipper snipping, and basic pruning as your services?

@@eveleinnyokabi California is ideal for lawn care. 👌 In spite of all the competition, there's STILL tons of work out here. Too much! Weather is absolutely perfect, lawns aren't huge, and you can easily get $160 to $200 on one client per month. The side gigs in tree trimming is where a lot of the money is at. Just last week I made $600 in 4 hours on a $1,450 job.. 2 of our guys did most of the work. If you don't like yard work or being outdoors then this job isn't for you. But if you enjoy being outside and doing lawn care, well, the reward can be life changing. My immigrant father raised a family of 5, bought our home, cars and took my sister thru college all thanks to lawn care. And he did it one lawn at a time. Today, he's boss man. He hasn't gone out on routes for a few years now. All he does is drive around in a separate company truck checking up on clients, delivering small plants, and giving estimates on potentially new clients. He hasn't pushed a lawnmower in probably 10 years. And that's because he doesn't have to anymore. That should always be your goal.
It appears he has a decent maintenance and cleanup company. I can tell with his current equipment and setup he is not installing the landscapes you see drawn out on these sheets of paper. You can definitely get to where he is with the 300.00 invested (truck not included, you will need this or a minivan/some sort of transportation). I did the same thing and have grown in the same way as he, he is the norm in the landscape and construction industry. He has a long way to go before he has a real company but he definitely is making a living now. Kudos to him!
It’s possible to start with 300 dollars. If you’re mechanically inclined go on eBay and buy some old ass commercial lawn equipment that just need new carbs, replace the carbs and then use your personal vehicle and claim it on your taxes cus it’ll be eligible to be written off so then all you need is customers, start in the hood where the income is low and the grass is tall and offer 15 dollar lawn services but also call the city board for properties that need to be cut due to lawn violations and they prolly will pay you
I'm sorry, but I just started a lawn service, and this really gives people false hope. I currently have 32 yards, and I make roughly 35 to 40k a year. This is before tax, gas, and maintenance. For this guy to make 300k or more with an average yard being 100 a month, he would need at least 290 yards. With him only working 4 days a week, he has to do over 70 yards a day!!! Even with a 2 or 3-man crew, this is impossible.
Man you’re mowing lawns, there’s a lot more money in other things in landscaping. He’s clearly designing and installing pathways, cutting trees for people, and he’s working in Seattle
Exactly what I was thinking. He's again in the "ignorant phase" like he called it himself. He could relatively easily grow bigger by hiring 1 or 2 more to help out. But it's been really inspiring to hear how he started and how he got where he's at doing something that most youngings these days would never even think about doing.
I mean the way he turned this into a big business is he has the knowledge. Knowledge is everything having that degree really helps with that. You can do it without that degree but your going to struggle a lot
Thank you for that Dr Rick. 😀We appreciate the attention to detail and are so happy you're enjoying the content. Are you in the landscaping industry as well?
@@UpFlip _Yes I am but I'm solo the "finding a helper" part hit home for me because it's so hard to find someone reliable that knows what they're doing so I can expand._
In 7th and 8th grade I went around and found 9 lawns to mow weekly during spring and summer. I would put all my equipment into a little garden trailer hooked to my dads riding mower and would drive around the neighborhood to my jobs. I charged $20 a piece. so I was making $180 a week at 13 years old. Then at 16, I got a job as an irrigation and landscape specialist for a landscaping company and worked there until I was 22. Now I stare at spreadsheets all day for a huge corporation and want to get back into landscaping haha. I want to go work for an established company though as the market is SO saturated with landscape companies.
I bought a used mower a few years ago a 48" scag collected about 40 clients and had issues with the used mower. Which put me in a tight spot. I decided to buy a new mower and since have been working for a company 40+ hours a week to buy all tools and equipment needed I know have over 7000 in just mowers trimmers blowers a good edging shovel is over a 100 dollars. I enjoyed the video just think people should know the maintenance of a used mower in the end is gonna cost or put u in a tight spot don't think cheap this is ur future . U gotta spend money to make money just being honest I think 300 is unreal unless ur putting a mower in ur trunk of ur Camry. Which I'm not saying isn't possible js u want to look the part as well as do Good Work.
I was thinking the same thing! I have a decent full size van with a trailer hitch so i am thinking a small trailer for about $700 and a new push mower for about $300, Then i will need a trimmer and blower and edger and fuel cans and brooms and shovels and rake, Etc..And maybe a Decent zero turn mower..So really im looking at about $7 to $8k to get started with reliable and decent equipment!

Doing great numbers brother, I’m only working for a landscaping company right now as I’m only 17. Using a personal truck with those numbers, you still look young, so I’m assuming there’s still room to grow. I’d finance a work truck and let the personal be the personal. Build your credit and get the tax write off!

35% profit margin is not the right way to go in landscaping, you have to facter in you time+cost+mileage. So compare to your profit margin if I get you to do a job for me that is going to cost you $300 material + 5 hours in labor +35% that will be around $400. So you will make about $20 an hour - Tax so after tax would be around $15 after tax.
I am studying agriculture now and i want to focus on landscaping. Can you suggest me a topic title for thesis or anyone here can you give me an idea. I really want to learn landscaping.
Why are there so many of these videos based in the US with relatively ordinary businesses with some thumbnail saying $22,000!!! I assume we’re talking turnover because if we’re not then there’s something wrong with the USA.
Awesome tips and awesome work, I'm in the process of buying equipment and hopefully get something started. I want to do summer and winter work here in Canada. Have you tough about adding pressure washing? Cleaning roofs and gutters? That's what's calling my name
I'm in Boca Raton and the market is completely saturated....I've found a niche in the industry that "nobody wants to do" and it's mostly labor.....I only started about 2 months ago and with only "free" advertising have been able to pull in 4 lawn maintenance accounts and 5 landscaping jobs 🎉.....
No money in maintenance . I’m still watching but I have a landscaping company I net 30-40k per month 25-30hr a week working hours (not including all my quoting invoice etc) and have two employees. Zero maintenance all softscaping and some hardscaping. Lots of re sods. Cutting a lawn is like $75 you can’t make money like that even if you have full day contacts. He’s grossing 22 a month . That’s not great. 5k per week. Meh. Get out of the maintenance brother even do garden beds the profit is heavy because we get the contractor discounts for plants and sell it at retail to the clients. Even just tree planting can be an amazing profitable business my profit margins are 60-70% and up . After paying the labourers materials gas . Does not include paying me so the business profits after everything 50% easily . Also the degree is not necessary at all if anything a business degree would be way more helpful
I hear ya.. I slowly figured it out, and improving my maintenance margins rapidly as we speak. It pays me a decent salary now, which is not included in the profit margin. But I would like to do more design/install.
I have a landscape company doing 800k per month. The maintenance pays the payroll and funds the large install work. Maintenance is also where the value is for the exit play. Good luck
@@kevinpottorff2899 Same situation here. Southern California and we do ~40M annually. Maintenance is the steady cashflow that makes everything else bearable. Installations, irrigation repairs, and tree work is the higher margin work that is a relatively predictable percentage of non-contract work that comes with the maintenance.

Update ?

Hello from Belgium. Someone knows what is the size of the BRUTE container in the video at 21:27 min? thanks
Awesome. If you’re still growing and hiring I’d love to talk about how I can take your company up to the next level.
That’s great to hear! Feel free to visit his website. Link's in the description!
This guy is in a position to grow. To much work get another crew. Can’t keep up is a great sign this man needs to go farther he’s doing great
Exactly what I was thinking.
You can do it without that degree but your going to struggle a lot
hell yeh keep it up maximum effort dont give up
_Learned alot of good stuff from this thanks also love the different shots you made and the quality is A1._
Looking to eventually start a landscape lawn business video is very helpful
Yes he is. I'm from VA. I used to work for Richmond mowing. Nathan was making 30 thousand a month. 5 to 6 thousand a day only doing residential
That's amazing! So how was your experience working with them?
@@johnsmith-wd5sq credit works but you don't want to go into debt on everything depending on your situation just buy 1 thing you need a week or if you get a job buy a required tool with that money but regardless have a primary income let this start out as side money Do good work and watch it grow so fast ul wish u started years ago!
Washington is the way to go for landscape business around Seattle area I was on trip I was like damn beautiful landscape property!
Good info...Preparing to restart a yard maintenance business after shutting down for a few years due to poor management.
That is great news OutOneMorning. Congrats! 😀The best part about restarting a business is you already have the blueprint setup. Have you made changes on how you plan to handle the previous management problem?

Using quickbooks for credit card payments? You must be paying a premium for that, like 3 to 3.5%
I could get that down to closer to a corporate rate and you can still use quickbooks. Not to mention you get that insurance to protect you from any sort of fraudulent charges.
Love the video and your content
When you started, how did you deal with hauling debris? I assume you already had a truck?
Great episode! I had a lawn care biz last year and got overwhelmed and fsmily issues so I ended it.
This is motivating and makes me wanna start it back up RIGHT. Thanks for this!!
Great to hear Phil, we hope you start it back up!
Glad to hear it Phil. You should consider joining Steel Toe University online. The group activity has quieted down in recent years, but there is a library of content that was developed that can help landscapers start their business with good info. Good shit bro. You too.
Oregon residents are required to get:
-Landscape Construction Professional License
-Landscape Contracting Business license.
The qualification requirements for a Landscape Construction Professional License (individual) is a very long list. These qualification requirements are required to take the LCP exam.
I am trying to make a career change. Starting a landscaping business seems to be very difficult. I have a lot of power tools, hand tools and a reliable truck.
Obtaining the LCP (Landscaping Construction Professional License) seems like my biggest obstacle right now.
Thanks so much for your thoughtful comment @MegaKaiser2009 ! Once you get your License, what will be your next move?
Great video and info my dudes

Thanks for watching G Rex. 😀We think he'll do great. What type of company would you like to see featured on the channel next?

It's surprising how much money businesses make, regardless of the type; that's why we strongly encourage people to start one too 🙏

Good luck
@@kevinpottorff2899 that just boggles my mind.
