Absolutely loved the production on this, because it started a little ephemeral and the solidified into a slow build. The fact that there are two vocal parts always felt like two parts of himself coming together into a climax when he is harmonizing with himself.
here in ireland it was one of the fastest and best selling albums ever and the 5th fastest in the uk too. An underated masterpiece with so many great tracks.
Great song and reaction. Richard Ashcroft has some very good solo material as well. Would recommend 'Song for the lovers' and 'They don't own me' from his solo recordings.
Urban Hymns is one of the best rock albums of the 90s. Excellent guitar work/textures by McCabe and Simon Tong, Stellar rhythms from Si Jones and Peter Salisbury, and some amazing vocals/lyrics by Ashcroft (though the lyrics can be cheesy lol). Every song on that album is something special
Seems like you like the more soothing Ashcroft vocal. As a lover of the Verve since the beginning, I can suggest a few tracks not on Urban Hymns that I think you might connect with. “On Your own” and “History” off their Northern Soul album are heart breaking masterpieces of the Ashcroft aching vocal. I also really love “See You in the Next Life” off their Storm in Heaven album. And if I may…if you enjoy The Verve, there is a band that also creates a heavenly epic and aching sound in a similar vein. Spiritualized. Been around as long as The Verve. “Ladies and Gentlemen we are Floating in Space” is a nice track to start with. And finally, I’m an Okie from Oklahoma and would love to see you react to the Flaming Lips. “Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots” and “Do you Realize” are both on the same album(Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots). You might enjoy them…;)

Lucky man is a masterpiece of a song. Bittersweet is their signature tune and obviously amazing but this is also really superb
