Verve best band ever!!! Nick McCabe one of the greatest guitarists ever! Ashcroft's lyrics and voice are incredible, Verve rhythm section always locked in! VERVE!!!
React to The Verve 'Love is Noise' Glastonbury. Michael Eavis didn't want them to headline, but his daughter insisted, and they played one of the greatest live shows ever.
Yes Urban Hymns has some great songs. I have that album too. A friend says earlier albums are more psychedelic. They split. Ashcroft went solo. The’re was a comeback but it did’nt last. I think Nick Mcgabe the guitarist was important for their sound. History is song I like outside the Urban Hymns album.
I followed the verve very early !! Richard used to stand on the amps and shout who has the verve !!! Over and over when less than a couple of hundred where watching and less than 20% got it - but he & they believed it !! And the rest (well done lads ) is history !!- best song my humble-not history but velvet morning!!!
Just to complete the list of Manchester bands from the era you’re listening too.. All gems, The Fall, Buzzcocks, Joy Division, New Order, The Smith and Morrissey, James, Happy Monday’s, Inspiral Carpets, The Charlatans, The Verve, Stone Roses, Oasis, Doves, 808 State and Courteeners.
It’s a music and football mad City and is known as Madchester for its music and rave culture. Really friendly people, very direct with their views and with a swagger of confidence, watch Ian Brown or Liam Gallagher!!
Urban Hymns is a great album, but by this stage the band were only hanging together by a thread. "Slide Away" from their first album is their finest hour, IMO.

The live version in detroit is even better. Amazing live performance.
My fave from the album . Nick MaCabe !!!
"All in the mind," or "velvet morning." Two favourite verve songs
Truly brilliant . There was only one way from here .
Urban hymns is one of the greatest albums ever made!
The verve "Slide Away" is their signature track!
On "Urban Hymns", Bittersweet Symphony is the opening track and this is the closer

I think this song was the last of the old (& my preferred) Verve & the rest of Urban Hymns was Verve heading off in a different direction.
Gravity Grave, their third single ever, is 9 minutes of just hypnotic, beautiful guitar, bass and drums. Definitely up your alley.
The verve its a great band!!

Impressive list! And Holy Moly, I see the Charlatans listed there. Have a song from them that I want Chris to listen to. Their big hit from '90.
Also didn't know the Buzzcocks were also from Manchestet. Pete Shelly a genius. Love Homosapien, but may go deeper if we react to them. - Greg

Northside
Elbow and Oceansize too, I think you guys would really dig Oceansize actually lol
Awesome!
Verve were from Wigan....sorry brother!
For me, the drums drive the rhythm. The guitar adds flair, but the drums are the song
They come from Wigan!
Pie eaters
The Verve are from Wigan, not Manchester.
Noted. Thanks!

Should react to oasis and more stone roses😀
