“Jay sounds like an unreasonable person behind the scenes”
Gonna be honest, I’m not sure the dude making that statement, or really anyone else watching this video has worked with Jay, but I’ve worked with Jay on quite a few projects now, and I’ve known him even longer than we’ve been working together, and I can honestly, 100% without a doubt say that I have never EVER seen an unreasonable side to him. He’s never been anything short of polite and super into whatever the “thing” at hand is. I’ve seen him deal and interact with thousands of fans and he gave them a fantastic experience every time. When it came to money, nothing was ever weird between us, and again, he truly went above and beyond for the stuff that we did together when he quite frankly, didn’t have to. He could’ve easily just did what we were supposed to do and moved on, but he was very involved and productive with all of it.
Granted, I’m not in the band or on the label so I can’t tell you anything about that side of things, but what I can say as someone who’s known him for the better part of a decade, and has actually worked with the dude on a professional level as well, is that he’s a real one. And being as involved in the fan base as I am, I can also tell you he was very treasured amongst the fans. I can’t speak on behalf of anyone else that’s done business with him, but I definitely wanted to throw out my 2 cents for the dude because I respect him so much on a personal level BECAUSE of my interactions with him. I think that says something, right?
Not picking sides or saying anything about anyone, but I am very sad to see Jay go. He brought an essence to the band that alot of us can agree we love and hadn’t seen for a while before he joined.

I'm not a huge fan of Slipknot, but it was disappointing news. Jay's story on paper lends to a lot of empathy. Imagine being a big fan as a little kid, your dream coming true by joining the band and then "parting ways." Just that part of it, not knowing what happened, is sad for anyone to see.
The way they worded it was very dismissive of Jay. They basically said Joey was great, Jay was a serviceable copy machine. They didn't need to bring Joey's name into it, especially right away. A band of their stature knows how to properly word public statements. That was an unnecessary, purposeful dig.

I think the reason why people feel so strongly about Jay Weinberg leaving Slipknot is that apart from the main Slipknot 9, he was number 10 in a way. Jay was a child when he got into Slipknot as a fan and became like a mascot for the band. Then as Jay gets older he joins the very band he was a fan of as a child, that’s a very interesting and heartwarming story really.

I think the reason for the strong reaction is that back in the days, they all talked about "We are the nine" and stuff, and Paul's death seemed to bring them even more closer. Since that, they fired Joey, had an ugly breakup with Chris Fehn and parted ways with Craig Jones. Jay was seen like someone who was definetly more than a session musician, someone who's definetly a member of the family, so firing him can be seen as a sign that Slipknot is no more than a business organization led by Clown and Corey, and that disappoints a lot of people given their history.

Joey didn't just leave the band. They kicked him out in the same way they are doing to Jay, and completely blindsided him. He was a founding member of the band! It was speculated that it was because the band thought Joey was on drugs, when in all actuality he was dealing with the early symptoms of MS and didn't know it (Not 100% sure on that again, just heard it numerous times as speculation). They kicked him out and turned their backs on him completely. As someone who literally grew up on the OLD Slipknot, I never forgave them for that. Joey is/was and always will be my fave Slipknot member. It doesn't surprise me in the least that they did this again now, but let's hold their feet to the fire for Joey too! There's a big difference between filling Joey's shoes with his songs live vs filling Joey's shoes in the studio. Yeah, Jay can play Joey's songs live, but the dude can not write anywhere close to Joey. When Slipknot came out, the drumming was one of the main things people talked about. Every album with Joey, the drumming stood out. With Jay, he just sounds like a generic metal drummer with the stuff he writes. He never fit Slipknot, in my opinion. I 100% understand them letting him go as a creative decision. I think they're going to find a drummer that can play Joey's stuff live, but can also write similar to Joey for when it comes to make another album. I think the band wants that old Slipknot drumming sound back. Now that they dont have Roadrunner breathing down their necks telling them what to do, they can take the time to find the drummer that perfectly fits Slipknot.

Joey Jordison's "sloppiness" was him playing slightly off the beat in the same way a lot of hip hop drummers do. He combined that with a furiosity that ultimately created a chaotic sound that made a lot of Slipknot songs sound like they were barely being held together. Their early stuff especially had this feeling that it would devolve into a pure cacophony of noises at any moment. To replicate his sound, one would probably have to have a background in both hip hop and extreme metal.

As far as drumming goes, I see a huge development in the last 15 years or so. Similar to many guitarists, many have developed towards very high technical levels which would have been jawdroppers in the 90s or so. I think it has to do with many resources like youtube-tutorials as well as better/available recording methods (you see very fast that your beats are out of grid once you have the visualization on a DAW). So drummers that died like 10-15 years ago would look comparably sloppy.
That being said, Roy Mayorga would be a good fit. There is a video where he plays Duality with Paul Gray and it sounds awesome.

Joey wasnt sloppy. He was raw, unpolished talent, and a fuck tonne of style. And that's worth 10,000x more than a human metronome.
There are some people who are born to do a thing. Those people are so incredibly talented (in the gifted by heaven sense) that they grow without needing necessarily to study every rudiment and fundamental. That means they may be a little sloppy, but they have more character than 99% of others. Moon, Bonham, The Rev, Joey Jordison etc Their unmistakable styles are born from their innate talent, rather than constant study (not saying some of them didn't study on top, but these 4 are known for pretty wild styles). To me that's the difference between a good drummer and a legend.

Those are some of the greatest drummers to have played rock/metal. Are they all bad? Or could you judge from those examples and my description of talent what I meant?
I also prefaced my entire comment, saying, "Joey wasn't sloppy". Like you just read what you want yo read.
My point was that talented drukmers with distinct styles and a bit of wildness will be called sloppy, but it's better that than just be a metronome with no character.

Considering their backgrounds, I'm kinda amazed they got along for so long. Until he left, I never really knew who Jay was, except for "a great drummer", but from what I read/heard now, it looks like he kinda grew up to be a fulltime musician one way or another, wealthy & reasonably famous parents which is as far as I know quite far from how the other guys in Slipknot grew up. And he was almost 20 years younger than most of them (and is now at the perfect age to settle for a family life with maybe one or two small tours a year, a point the rest of Slipknot is far past). Maybe the "creative decision" was the band planning extensive tours (which I kinda hope they do, nothing wrong with Knotfest & Festivals in general, but I'd love to see them on another headline tour) and he just didn't see himself doing that 🤷‍♂
It looks like in terms of making decisions of any kind, the band has been Clown & Corey for a while now, and to be honest, I'm fine with that. There are quite a bunch of chaotic, hungry young bands out there, Slipknot have been around for over 25 years, almost every one in the band is close to 50 or older now, there will not be a second Iowa (and I hope they don't try to make one).

Few musicians other than the singer can completely change the "feel" of a band, than the drummer. When it's time for major growth or an evolution of "style", the easiest member to change, is the drummer.
I for one, am intrigued to hear what direction Slipknot goes in the future.

Slipknot read Dream Theater's statement about firing Mike Mangini and bringing back Portnoy lol. It's practically the same statement but unfortunately Joey isn't here to take his role back.

I’ve always seen Slipknot as a traveling show more than a band. Bands like GWAR, Misfits, and even The Mars Volta always had personnel changes, and they all have clear eras, and seeing the different lineups were wildly different experiences (not in a good way or bad way, just different). As long as some of the old guard stays in the lineup, the show will go on.

Roy Mayorga was indeed with Soulfly around the 2000s. I saw him on the street outside the venue of the show they played with Slayer and didn't know it.

Ray actually filled in for Joey on a bass video Paul put out, demonstrating and teaching his parts from Slipknot. So Ray can definitely play Joey’s parts

So what about Craig? Was that an official leave too?
I also loved Joey's instrumentation in the songs. Especially iowa. Its the beats he chose and the instruments he decided to hit during certain part. Thats what always made him a favorite metal drummer to me.different from the rest

Based on the comments around Madball, it sounds like he's not interested in alcoholism and hard drugs, and they think you've got to be into that kind of stuff to exist in that industry, which is crazy. And considering the substance abuse issues that have always surrounded Slipknot, I wouldn't doubt if that were a contributing factor.

I think Jay just has his ways and from where he came from starting off his career filling with Bruce for his pops, I imagine he knows how he wants things and doesnt really budge when it comes how he wants his side of things Id imagine. which may rub folks the wrong way. And I think simon may want to continue to just do his own thing honestly

Some other people have mentioned Eloy Casagrande from Sepultura and I couldn't agree more cuz he is INSANELY amazing 🤘. Also heard many suggest El Estepario Siberiano. He is beyond talented for Slipknot lol

  • @letthetunesflow

I just hope that Slipknot gives El Eestepario Siberiano a shot as their next drummer. Members of Slipknot are already huge fans of Mr. Siberiano, going so far as to request that he cover certain Slipknot songs for them to enjoy.
El Eestepario Siberiano is not only absurdly technically proficient, but he is an amazing entertainer, that can not only play in a flashy and fun manner, but damn! El Eestepario Siberiano can also simply groove harder than almost anyone in metal these days! Mr. Siberiano is sadly rarely given credit for his amazing groove and dynamics! Mr. Siberiano’s flashy playing is just too bloody entertaining! Most people are so blown away by Mr. Siberiano’s talent, that they fail to notice anything other than his flashy one handed versions of popular songs.
Unfortunately, and fortunately, everyone gets distracted by Siberiano’s incredible gift for entertaining… I don’t blame anyone for becoming distracted by Siberiano’s insane technical abilities, like his insanely fast and tight one handed versions of, everything from the top 40, to the most difficult slipknot songs on drums…
The first time I watched Mr. Siberiano I was also much too entranced, and distracted by his insanely fun and entertaining one handed absurdity, to notice just how groovy and tight his performances are… His talent for showing off, and simply having fun makes Mr. Siberiano the perfect candidate for the next drummer of Slipknot… If you haven’t noticed just how groovy Mr. Siberiano is, maybe just go back and take a listen to the way he plays the “simple drum parts” of every song. Once you start to pay attention, and actively listen for how he performs those parts, you realize just how amazingly tight and simple his sticky grooves truly are! Wow! Just listen to how solid the foundation is behind his bombastic, yet absurd one handed stick, shtick! 😂

Hell's yes. First thing I thought of after I heard the news. Certainly disappointed to hear about Jay, but BigHouse would f'n rip. Only caveat would be: Would Eloy even want to be in this version of SK after last two records?
I think it's gonna be Clown's kid. RockFeed made that connection and I think he may have some insider info. He just did an interview with Corey a few weeks ago. Anyway, if the rest of their albums are gonna be like TESF then they should just let the castle burn.

@@lastmanstandinggetsnopity that's true, Eloy is a big part of current Sepultura and they're on their best moment since Max left. I think he could play with them if he could still be in Sepultura at the same time.

Imagine if all of a sudden Jay Weinberg, Chris Fehn, Craig Jones, Donnie Steele, Josh Brainard, Greg Welts and Anders Colsefni got together to form a new band as an anti-Slipknot group, they could be called Sleep Not or Not Slip, or maybe they could just revive Painface and make cool songs in the genre of old Slipknot.

  • @ForTiorIJohnny

i think it makes perfect sense that people are so upset about it. Jay really grew on everybody. his drumming not only progressed noticeably, which got people invested, but he also seems to be much more outgoing. you see him in way more interviews than anybody else, aside from Corey maybe, and he always comes across as a very likeable guy.
on top of that there has been quite a few member changes now without getting much info on any of it and it can get a bit frustrating. Slipknot really is a business nowadays, not a band. and making it multi generational is a bad idea imho. it´ll fizzle out and what´ll be left is a disingenuous shadow of what it was. but hopefully i´m wrong about that.
