When Japanese Voice Actor Pronounces "The Earth"

  • There's no "er" and "th" in Japanese, so this happens. I actually know a lot of games/animes where voice actors pronounce it this way.
    oh well (And by the way auditions are never like this from my experience)
    And before you guys say anything yeah it's a Jojo reference obviously, and yes for some reason some of you guys thought it's dio but it's jotaro

    Being finnish and watching 'Sugar Sugar Rune' with my sisters as a kid was an experience. The romantic interest of the show is called 'Pierre' and in Japanese pronunciation it basically bends into 'Pieru'.
    - Which in finnish is = fart.
    At the age of 12, hearing characters most passionately scream "fart-sama" throughout the show definitely makes for peak entertainment.

    The fact that he actually clearly speaks English and is trying hard to sound like he doesn't makes this hilarious on a whole new level.
    Edit: So 7 months later and after reading the replies to my way overrated comment (I don't get it either), it occurred to me that some people may not understand what my point was. My point was that Sora clearly knows how to pronounce English properly, and is very deliberately exaggerating his accent for fun. I simply meant that normally when people are paying close attention to their pronunciation, they are trying to speak correctly. Here, I can imagine him trying really hard not to slip up and accidentally pronounce something _correctly._ Like how if you are reasonably fluent in a foreign language and you want to sound as incorrect as possible, it actually takes effort to suppress your correctly learned language skills. And the thought of someone sweating bullets to be as incorrect as possible improves the comedy of the skit.

    Honestly, as a native English Speaker, for a character who is saying he's going to kill everyone and is announcing his Earth Blaster, I think that accent and the extreme way of speaking is spot on. It sounds awesome!!! That is exactly how someone announcing to his enemies that they are going to parish due to his Earth Blaster should sound. You have a future in voice acting.

    For those who don't know, Japanese does not have a hard R or L sound. They do however, have a sound that's kind of a mix of both and so that's why. Sometimes it'll sound like they're saying an r or an l like in dragon Ball z with krillin but it sounds like Krirrin to English speakers. And so you get a grown man who has never had to make either of those sounds in his life suddenly have to make a hard R sound

      @@roachybill To be fair, "Schmetterling" is a good choice to drive home the "rough language" stereotype, as it literally translates into something like "clashling" or "batterling". Which is hilariously violent to describe that kind of insect.

    • @grmpf
      @grmpf 2 роки тому +106

      @@roachybill LinkEX made it seem a bit too simple. In German, "schmettern" can also mean "to sing with strength/fervour", used sort of in the way you'd use "to belt" in English.
      None of that matters though because that's not the origin of the word. "Schmetten" was a word for cream (the dairy product) in Middle High German. Schmetterling and butterfly have the same origin: Some species are attracted to dairy products; they would often appear when people were making butter from cream.
      And "ling" is just a generic suffix that means "individual who is in some way identified by the previous part of the word". For example "Liebling" = "darling": "lieben" = "to love" plus the "ling" makes a person who is loved. In fact, as you can see from "darling", you've got the same thing in English: The "dar" part in "darling" corresponds to "dear" in modern English.
      So, overall, "Schmetterling" means "cream-related creature", not "creature that crashes things" or "creature that sings very loudly".

    • @grmpf
      @grmpf 2 роки тому +7

      @@LinkEX As UA-cam stupidly doesn't allow replying to multiple comments without replying to the whole thread, here's a comment letting you know that I went into what the word actually means in my reply to William.

    • @LinkEX
      @LinkEX 2 роки тому +7

      @@grmpf Good point, etymologically it actually does follow the same principle. It's just merely obfuscated because it happens to use the energetic act of making butter, using a verb that has largely went out of use.
      In that vein, it does work to describe the insect universally regarded as a symbol of tranquility and tenderness.
      Still, it's kind of hilarious that it ended up with such a misleading root word.
      Even the alternate meaning that describes this very energetic and assertive way of making music like a drum major is just as hilarious.
