He literally kicked both of his children out of the cart, so that the cart would run faster with less weight. Yet the guard kept bringing those kids back to the cart, so he kicked them out again, he repeated doing this three times before he finally gave up trying.

You need to understand that ancient Buddhist monks were not required to pay taxes and corvee, and because of their beliefs, many people would donate large amounts of property to the monks, which would be turned into land. As a result, Buddhist monks in ancient China generally owned land that did not need to pay taxes, and this situation would largely become the direct cause of the collapse of ancient dynasties. In order to rule, the Lord would generally loot the temple when the land acquisition was serious. This is actually a practical reason, on the other hand, many temples sometimes even set up their own armed forces, which can lead to some rebellions and wars

@@lesscringeymapperdude Those are actually the names of professions, ancestors, kingdoms, duchy, march, county/earldom viscounty and barony during the decentralized feudalism kingdoms before the centralized Qin empire. During that period of time, people get clan names from these nobles' domains, in ancient Chine before Qin, people have 姓 and 氏 which is family name and clan name, they also have 名 and 字 which is name and courtesy name. Some noble people have 谥号 posthumous name (actually means deeds title). Most of people are all included in the 8 ancient families, which causes problem when there are millions of people from the same family that was named thousands of years ago, so 氏 clan name was invented, only one major branch can inherit the 姓 family name, while millions of people in the minor cadet branches will get a 氏 clan name based on people's domain or profession or courtesy name of ancestor or posthumous name of ancestor. For example people with named 唐Tang have 2 different origins of 姓 family names, but they have the same 氏 clan name because they lived at the same place called 唐Tang. And then the 唐Tang dynasty got established thousands of years later by a guy with 氏family(clan) name 李Li/Lee, and his 1 out of 8 ancient family name is unknown. He is the duke of 唐Tang during the 7th century early medieval ages, but his name is not Tang. 氏Family(clan) name 李 is also a super complicated special thing, because it have origins from all families, 李Li/Lee like Bruce Lee(plum), 吏Li(official), 史Shi(historian in a vague way, basically all recorders), 使Shi(use or ambassador) all came from the clan name 事Shi(thing, job, affair), it is a clan name used by basically anyone who worked in the government as officials, so these clan names have origins from all family names. And then there are clan names with same pronounciation but different meanings, 唐 and 汤 Tang are totally different, 汤 comes from the posthumous name of a king. 夏Xia is the name of the first kingdom dynasty. But there is also different 夏Xia that comes from an ancestor's courtesy name. 明Ming is the clan name of an ancestor's courtesy name, it is unrelated to 明Ming dynasty, because Ming means bright and illuminated, the dynasty was actually related to the Ming cult which is actually Manichaeism.
The interesting thing is that the vast majority of Chinese have only about 100 or so last names, which is where the phrase "Lao Baixing" describing the common people comes from, literally "old 100 last names". That's why a lot of people both in history and today have a set of common last names, like Wang, Zhang, Liu, Zhu, Tang, Li, etc.,. However, the names of dynasties often came from the land of which family/person who established it hailed from. There are a couple of old timey names for various areas in China like Shu for Sichuan, Liang for the area around the Yellow River, Wu for the Yangtze Basin/Shanghai, Yan for the Beijing area, etc., and that's usually how they came to be.

3:47 this is describing a very special event in Chinese history. During the civil war in the end stage of Tang Dynasty, one city was enclosed by the rebellion army, and it was the very crucial point of the war, basically if the rebellion army won here, it would most likely destroy the Tang Dynasty and win the whole civil war. So they sent 100k to 200k army to try to take the city. The city only had about 7000 soldiers to fight and very quickly they ran out of food. Then the commander ordered to eat people, starting with his own wife (secondary wives, not the primary one), then his family servants, then the old civilians, then the weak and wounded ones, then women, then children (basically the ones have minimal help to defend the city), and the lastly, men. By gradually eating up the whole city (people, animal, insect, plant, even cloth), the government army actually was able to hold the city for months and killed tens thousands of enemies. More importantly it bought significant amount of time for the other government army to assemble and fight rebellion everywhere else and win eventually. By the time the rebellion took the city, the whole situation of the war was already turned against them, then soon after it, the whole rebellion failed. However, by the time the city was lost, only 400 people out of 40000 civilians and 7000 soldiers survived. Thousands even tens thousands got eaten, and the rest starved to death. The commander did not survive either. In Chinese history, for a very long time long time, this event was generally considered as an extraordinary success, and the commander made the tough but necessary decision. For hundreds of year after it, this story was passed down as an example of a great military miracle and loyalty to the nation. Many poetries were created to praise the commander, the soldiers, even the “sacrifice” of the people. Still criticism of this event existed since the beginning but never widely accepted throughout the history until the modern China.

@@therocketsciencekid And what human rights did European peasants have? In the feudal system, you were owned by the king and aristocrats; ever see the Medieval devices used for insubordination? For 2,500 years, Confucianism was the state religion and instructed rulers to take care of the peasants AS FAMILY: "Heaven does not create the people for the sake of the sovereign; Heaven creates the sovereign for the sake of the people."-Mencius, 300 B.C. Thus the Chinese government for over 2,000 years has been expressly oriented toward service of the people, including policies and infrastructure to promote food production: there are huge grain storage bins built thousands of years ago by the government, 30, 40 feet deep to store surpluses for times of need. In fact, there was a 1911 Columbia PhD thesis that described food management policies like price controls, used by ancient Chinese governments in times of droughts and floods. When policies fell short, Chinese emperors often issued apologies directly to the people. In Europe, the kings rarely did so, and only ever did to the Pope, not the people.

To be honest, modern Chinese Mainland is more unified than any previous dynasty, and more inclined to be unified than the people of any other country, because we are really fed up with division, and we just want to have a good life. This is why the Chinese people chose to follow the communist road when we established our country. The core of common prosperity in communism is similar to the great common world proposed by our Chinese ancestors.
If you have lived in China or received Chinese education, you will know that no one in China believes in God, Heaven, Christianity now. Due to the failure of the Qing Dynasty and the invasion of Japanese imperialism, Chinese now rely more on the power of their own hands rather than the so-called heavens and gods and other countries help, and are more united than any previous dynasty.Because we will never forget that life today was forged by the flesh and blood of the Communist Party's predecessors during World War II.

"Need Money? Steel from the Buddhists"
Vietnam: That's why we declared Independence
You need to understand that ancient Buddhist monks were not required to pay taxes and corvee, and because of their beliefs, many people would donate large amounts of property to the monks, which would be turned into land. As a result, Buddhist monks in ancient China generally owned land that did not need to pay taxes, and this situation would largely become the direct cause of the collapse of ancient dynasties. In order to rule, the Lord would generally loot the temple when the land acquisition was serious. This is actually a practical reason, on the other hand, many temples sometimes even set up their own armed forces, which can lead to some rebellions and wars

Chinese history shows you that a lot of Chinese people’s last names are the names of Dynasties
The names also usually mean other things. Ming is fire, Qing is water fir example. My personal favourite is Shun which means Levelling
@@stateofflorida5082 that’s cool
@@JoshQ9 I meant people from china have tang, Xia, ming as their last name
@@lesscringeymapperdude Those are actually the names of professions, ancestors, kingdoms, duchy, march, county/earldom viscounty and barony during the decentralized feudalism kingdoms before the centralized Qin empire. During that period of time, people get clan names from these nobles' domains, in ancient Chine before Qin, people have
姓 and 氏 which is family name and clan name, they also have 名 and 字 which is name and courtesy name.

5:27 "... and the make the wall great again. "
as an American, this combination of words made me a little depressed D:
You know what's mad until today? Japan has never apologised nor acknowledged its war crime in Nanking.
Actually, one of the reasons behind this was that the Chinese government refused to release a name list with those who were killed in the Nanking Massacre. It got people wondering if the Nanking Massacre actually happened.
@@antonwogame5602 interesting but silly comment. in case you dont know, let me tell you that more than 300k victims died in that suffering in nanking where's the capital at that time of china, japanese army massacred whole city after they occupied for revenge cuz the chinese army fought against them too hard in shanghai, where's the japanese army landed. nealy all of them are just the civilian, do you think is that possible to make a complete name list? btw, althought the most survivors passed because of old age, they still left tons of details by many ways, and even japan's ally in ww2, nazi germany, their ambassador in china left enough informations and descriptions of that massacre. so, dont make it stupid when you know nothing. pls learn and respect the history, especially when it was a tragedy.
@@weeii_u Thank you for correcting my mistake. However, the Chinese government actually released a name list on their website on 4 Dec, 2007. Also, please do not insult others on the Internet. We are all trying to learn history and sharing what we know about the matter. If someone was wrong, please correct them politely. If we know everything, we would not be watching this video and discussing.
@@antonwogame5602 to point out some mistake
1. The Nanjing Massacre occurred from December 1937 to January 1938. During this time, the Japanese imposed a strict blockade on information, preventing external access and limiting journalists' ability to report on the event. It was only after about a month that the Republic of China became aware of the massacre.
2. because Nanjing is the capital of the Republic of China so there are Numerous foreigners in Nanjing, including diplomats and missionaries, who witnessed the atrocities of the massacre firsthand. For example "John Magee" an American priest took actual footage of the event.
3. both Chiang Kai-shek(the president of the Republic of China at that time) and Soong Mei-ling made public statements after the massacre in America, revealing the atrocities and calling for international action against Japanese aggression. at that time America's society was outraged by the Japanese
4. you said China's government released a name list in 2007, umm... you know that Nanjing Massacre happened in the Republic of China not The People's Republic of China, right? This means many things like people's id need to be re-recognize because of the government change
5. even if you ask why The People's Republic of China did not release earlier, you do know that The early years of the People's Republic of China were dealing with civil conflict, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, etc. It wasn't until China in the 90s to 00s that finally had more peace and stabilized, so the list open in the 07s isn't even that strange
“China is whole again, than it broke again” could’ve been the only dialogue in the video and it just ends and it would still be accurate
Fun fact: the history of the expansion of ancient Chinese culture, especially to Japan and Korea is yet not mentioned but very interesting to be learnt.
