I used flags and string to connect between the flags instead of paint to mark the circle. A little more work but same end result. I actually here to learn about removing the grass so I'll watch your other video.
You would want to make your tree ring as far out as you can so the tree roots are contained by the ring. It's not good for the tree roots to be on the surface of the ground and hit by lawn mowers, weed wackers, etc. Once you cut the edge you can remove the grass by a non-selective weed killer, there are organic options, and then apply a LIGHT (less than 2 inches) coating of mulch around the tree.

OK so what do you do for the actual ring?
I'm going to place pavestones around the ring to make a small retaining wall. I've found plenty of videos here on that too.
