But you're also pressing the equivalent of about 1.5 times your bodyweight. Engaging lots of other muscles too doesn't mean you're working the chest less.
~2/3 of your bodyweight, yes you're right, but with only one hand. If a 180lb guy is pressing 120lb dumbbells (2/3 bodyweight each), he's pressing 240 lbs, and he's shredded.
This is starting to become one of my fav fitness channels, and I only found it 3 days ago! Thank you for these videos Mike. You seem like a humble and great dude! Can't wait to meet you one day
suppeboy saaid same here! I think I saw him in one of Calums videos and I kept trying to find who that guy was because he had a sick physique. Great channel :)
totally agree! Ive been following this guy for a month or so now. He's great! to the point and no "cool" talking, which makes it so annoying, like many others out there.
javier vazquez Tf? Who cares if he is or he isn't, he has a great attitude and message he's giving. If it improves someones life then that's all that matters. Have a great day ;)
True though. A lot of people think blasting through the weights is a good idea. I have a lot of friends who were like that, and after 3 months they stop because its "too hard" to continue and they get lazy. Better to keep doing the same reps on a light weight and add only a little bit after a few weeks or a few months and keep on grinding rather than get burnt out the first few months. Working out is all about continuity rather than who can lift the heaviest first.
Glad I ran across this video! I just turned 56 in January I've been working out 3 to 4 days a week for one year starting to gain finally but I think my technique is holding me back not to mention my age! LOL
Nice video. You are the first UA-cam trainer I've seen that stressed doing all angles with the press to work the chest properly. I would also like to say your instructional videos are perfect. No pointless chatter or supplement sales pitch. Thank you.
Hey Mike you're my favorite fitness youtuber, and I'd like some advice from you or someone else in the comment section. I have extremely big arms and right now I just hit arms like once a week to maintain muscle mass. But my chest is a whole different story, it's really lacking size and I hit it twice a week but it's really hard to put some mass on my chest. Heres my chest rutine: 2 warm up sets on chest press machine 3-4 sets of 10 reps on chest press machine 3-4 sets of 10 reps on decline benchpress 4 sets of 10 reps on cable machine (hitting the upper chest) 3 sets of 10 reps on cable machine (hitting the middle chest) 3 sets of 10 reps on cable machine (hitting the lower chest) 3 sets of 10 reps of cable press (overhand) (hitting the middle chest) Sometimes I add some other exercises in at the end or before I go to the cable machine but that's mostly what I do to hit chest and I do this rutine twice a week. Is my first time i did this exercises and i really feel my chest they are the best exercises ever!!!!!! Well done Mike thanks mate I love your exercises Try them guys!!!!!
Only usually attempt chest Exercises when a friend of mine who is experienced is with me- but some of these videos make me feel like I have someone along the way with me! Great informative stuff.
this is the best chest workout vid. i ever seen and i have seen hundreds of them, for the first time i can chest press without shoulders pain, no one mentioned that before "keeping shoulders back" thanks a lot Mike
I listened closely to what Mike said here and watched his demonstrations several times - then I performed this chest workout twice, with a 4-day break between. I gotta tell you Mike - I have NEVER had my chest respond like this, and I've been lifting and doing various programs for the last 12 years consistently (I KNOW when something makes sense and works for me...). Thank you, Mike - I have downloaded your AFLETE app, and plan to become a client after I study and apply your YT videos a bit more. You make the most sense, and remove more of the mystery of all this, than any other online trainer I have found. There are lots of "mass monsters" online who offer courses that do not work (those guys look so strangely huge, that I feel sure they use steroids - and their programs are WAY too hard to recover from if you don't take steroids) - but -- if you want to enter into a lifestyle of healthy, strong fitness, Mike Thurston is the trainer you want to follow. I would do a free "ad" like this for you ANY time, man -
Mike, thank you very much for very informative, to-the-point videos. Since I've started to apply your advice, my work outs are def more effective now. People in London are so lucky to have you!
Mate I've been training since the end of January. I was training 6-7 days a week. Obviously over doing it. About 4 weeks ago I fell off it completely for 3 weeks. I got back in to it last Friday and I'm loving it again. Im doing 5 days now but only training chest, back, shoulders and arms. I have muscular legs through football and I don't want abs because if I'm honest I'm not strict enough with my diet. Im finding I'm doing 8-12 reps 3 sets on each targeted area and I'm getting my session done in about 30 - 45 mins with minimal rest between sets. Does this sound ok? Any pointers?. Please reply if you can. Thanks👍
You made the video very well and gave very accurate information. For some time I have been doing all these exercises and I have got very good results thanks for sharing.#stayfittogether
I really appreciate the focus on form and visualization. Very easy for me to fall into bad form without focusing on the the finer points. Thanks for your efforts.
Definitely one of the best fitness channels! Very informative, no BS, but the personality still comes through. And no judgement against those who use, but your physique although incredibly impressive, looks like it is attainable naturally which makes it even more impressive in my opinion. Goals. Keep up the good content!
Mik could you do a video how to fix shoulder impingment? I have stop my chest progress for couple of months de to shoulder impingemnt when doing inclines chst press and pull downs. What exercises do you do to fix your shoulders and strenghtening them. Keep up the good stuff!
From WebMD "Oral anti-inflammatory medications -- such as aspirin, naproxen, or ibuprofen, remain the most common treatment for impingement syndrome." "In addition to taking medications, daily stretching in a warm shower will help. You should work to reach your thumb up and behind your back. Avoid repetitive activities with your injured arm, particularly activities where the elbow would move above shoulder level." Of course "talk to your doctor" remains the best advice that someone with no medical training can give you, but if you're stubborn like me and refuse to see a doctor unless you think you're dying, I'd say this is your best bet.
For me, it was bringing the weight down, focusing on rotator cuff light weight exercises into the routine, face pulls (Omar Isuf's channel has these) and working in DB presses as my go-to over barbell. Also chest dips.

You will never hear him say "Drop the Dope" though lol
Speaking of "drop the weight" I was a bit disappointed that the one-handed pushup didn't make it in the list.
True; not a fan of isolation exercises myself. But, if you really want isolation then he shouldn't have been doing dumbbell presses either.
But you're also pressing the equivalent of about 1.5 times your bodyweight. Engaging lots of other muscles too doesn't mean you're working the chest less.
