I just found out that Crow's solo was played by a professional musician from Minneapolis named Andy LaCasse. Here's his account of the experience: "I'd gone to college with Mike Nelson who was the star of the show at that time and…the name of the particular movie that they were using in this episode was "The Dead Talk Back" and Mike and the robots… well one of the robots 'Crow' had decided that they would become The Grateful Dead. So they all have, you know, beards and crazy tie-dye t-shirts on and there's a song that they play called "Cosmic Freight Train." And then Crow, one of the robots, takes this epic guitar solo. And he [Mike] couldn't get a proper bad guitar sound out of the synthesizer he was using, so could I please come and play a bad guitar solo for them… So I walked in with a Stratocaster copy and a Big Jam Spit-Wah pedal, which was a little orange pedal about this big that did, you know, that quack-like-a-duck sound, like an envelope filter thing. Like Jerry Garcia would use, 'cause Crow is being Jerry Garcia.. So they've already filmed it, they've already taped it. So I'm watching a monitor, and they said, "Just follow Crow's hands and play along." [laughs] And they said, "And make it really annoying." So I took a pass at it and I get done and they're giggling, and they said, "That's pretty good. Can you make it even more grating?" And I said, "Yes" having no idea how I was going to make it more grating. I made a couple adjustments, and they said "Every once in a while go [sings] 'wamp wah wamp wah wamp wah' just over and over because that's what Jerry does. When I think of Jerry that's what I think of him doing." I said, "Ok. I'll do that." And the next take they said, "That's awesome. It's really really long and painful…" They liked it so much they had me do the same thing over the credits." -transcribed from an interview from the Fish Tank Sesisons
Steve Vai has nothing on Crow. After seeing that episode for the first time way back when, I knew my guitar effects processor had a "Filtron" effect (I never used it), when the episode ended, I immediately went to play guitar, using the Filtron. 🙂
I have the Rhino DVD and the menu for the episode features the audio of Crow's solo. If you stay on that screen for a while the solo will "loop" itself! I think I left it on for twenty minutes before playing the actual episode!
@talleyho12 yep he did... at this point though (and someone can correct me if I'm wrong) I think he and Trace wrote the music together.... fun fact Trace and Josh "Elvis" Weinstein are now the producer on America's Funniest Home Videos, or at least they were...

False info. Carl Verheyen did work on the crow wrote and played that rooftop solo.
Carl talked about it in a tutorial setup a Fender bridge.
Dude. It's in the episode credits. "cheesy guitar solo - Andy LaCasse". He's been interviewed about it. Google it.
Is he still playing?
that's awesome.
@@daleweber2579 oooooh?
I love the "OH thank God!" when the movie sign finally hits.
Aw, you cut out the part where Cambot comes back briefly as Mike has to grab Crow to get him to come into the theater.
I don’t think they’ve ever been this happy to hear the Movie Sign.
the end credits of this episode crack me up when crow's solo is still going
Crow has achieved a zen-like state of guitar grooviness.
And then the MOON came out, and it was like Jerry WILLED it!
Look closely, Gypsys hair is a actually Sally Struthers early All in the Familys hair do.😂😂😂
This made me fall apart laughing, mostly because even the Mads are asleep, and they have to drag Crow into the theater again.
I love Gypsy's free-flowing hair that totally covers her eye.
This becomes a running gag for the remainder of the episode. It even played over the credits.
I love this clip..
Crow is the best guitar player ever!!
One of my fave bits.
Way too funny!!
I love how portray the fact that the Dead can solo for weeks and never stop.
@AHPMB I love how Crow still continues to play despite movie sign...
Best. Solo. Ever!
There should be an hour loop of Crow's Guitar solo
ASMR, WHOOOOO!!!!
COMPLETELY EPIC !!!!!

Yes, I loved the cameo by Crow's Pants!
The best show ever.
Crow channeling Jerry!
When Crow JAMS, he JAMZ.. knowing this, why would you get him near a guitar if you ARE NOT willing to Hang with his jams all the way through???
(As Movie Sign plays)
Servo: AH...THANK GOD!
This was funny. Thanks for posting!
Crow's solo just wasn't long enough, man!
Awesome. I needed a good laugh today.. You can't get much better than reliving MST3K.
idk why but crow looked hilariously...cute lol

Crow's so cute in his little outfit. Is that the same beard he wore in the Sinbad council sketch?
'Do drugs, kids.'
Now that's a committed artist
one of my fav segments
How long was Crow playing? Gypsy was halfway through "War and Peace"
Been riding that cosmic freight train love it grow is jamming on that axe love it
0:45 - It starts
ROCK ON CROW!! lol!
freak freeeeely duuuuuuuuuude!
That was just great.
And the hits just keep on comin'!
The hits went on into the night. Manos!
the 90's.... they were... a different time
i think its actually meant to represent a *long* book more than anything else. and therefore the length of the solo
@talleyho12 yep he did... at this point though (and someone can correct me if I'm wrong) I think he and Trace wrote the music together.... fun fact Trace and Josh "Elvis" Weinstein are now the producer on America's Funniest Home Videos, or at least they were...
Wow Crow is one bad mamajama on the guitar.
Crow Garcia
Godly!
wait...who's tiny pants is Mike folding? Crow's?
So how many of the MST writers do you think were Deadheads?
What about St. Stephen or One More Saturday Night Gypsy?!
Gypsy's reading war and peace. LOL
Too true, mate. :)
Gypsy is reading war and peace. LOL
The best part (not on this clip) when cambot comes back out to find Crow still playing and Mike has to drag him into the theater.
@donwantstobesedated Coincidentally, didn't this initially air the week Garcia died?
I'm still trying to find out how did crow's solo last?
Lotta Deadheads love MST3K, this was classic • even though Mike is being Weir (evenbeas a decent resemblance) and Bobby never wears tie-dye.
Crow = Vinnie Vincent
Quick reminder.
Crow isnt strumming or on the right frets😂😂🤷♂️
Thanks Captain Music, you saved the village!
@@voicevitality7197 Always an honor (I didn't even know I posted this)
Its a wonder mike just didnt take the guitar and smashed it into a million pieces
Mikes not too bad a singer...
Solo starts at 0:44
Who's actualy playing guitar on this. He'she's really great. He/she's got Garcia down.
Do you flibbity flabbity? Do you scibbity scoobity?
They're both weirdly cute to me.
@Kill3rballoon a better time in my humble opinion... but I was born in the 90's so I'm a bit biased.
Into sugaree into love light..... hahahahaha
can i get a tab maybe?
lol I guess if you gave Jerry Garcia an inch he'd take a mile. Is that what they were lampooning with this sketch?
It's a send up of the fact that Jerry Garcia could, yes, play a two hour guitar solo for literally no reason than to play one.
War and Peace, when you need a random book to represent higher reading...
but mst3k isn't a kids show
that was so funny... haha :D
Crows really hitting the crybaby alot
This is sort of bastardized riff on "Estimated Prophet."
Turn off the bubble machine!!!!!! Jerry!!! Stop it for God's sake!!! STOPPPP!!!
An incredibly long and boring guitar solo?
Yeah, sounds like the Dead alright.
