      The main Abhidhamma teaching is not the five aggregates. Abhidhamma is a teaching of Paramartha/Ultimate Dhamma. Those teachings are like quantum physics. As mentioned, there are 28 forms of matter that raised with immaterial elements. Perhaps, some people don't understand those teachings. So, they think that those teachings originated later. But, a new theoritical research about the formation of elements showed the existence of those elements. So, surely those teachings were from the Buddha. There is a video about it named Paramartha Ultimate Realities Discovered. So we shouldn't ignore the Abhidhamma teachings. Those teachings are the only teachings in the world that can challenge modern science.

    • @smlanka4u
      @smlanka4u 2 роки тому +3

      @Greg LeJacques, I made a theory to find the formation of matter and forces. I could verify that theory using Buddhist teaching about Quantum Physics. So theravada Buddhism is more reliable than quantum physics.

    Thank you, Venerable, for this helpful teaching. Having read much of the Abhidhamma and attended your teaching series, I am enjoying what is for me a very helpful summary of your more detailed teachings. It's always good to re-calibrate one's understanding of some pretty technical material. But "value added": There are always new ways of considering that which awareness offers and the aggregates fabricate. Your teaching always challenges students to think outside the box, and be the thinking beings that the Buddha suggested.

    It is so worthwhile to develop strong samadhi in zazen and then apply that one-pointed concentration to the mind and mental states by following the abhidharma outlines which really give the meditator insight into the conditionality of samsara and the ability to analyze and not get caught. So be encouraged and follow these breadcrumbs thru the forest of ignorance. The abhidharma is really what has to be done. It is not theoretical, but to be applied on the mat. It is the truly useful aspect of meditation to be penetrated by insight VIpassana/Insight wisdom. But you don't have it without single-pointed concentration. It won't open for you. You remain trapped in conceptuality. So sit and develop single-pointed concentration. Then when Vipassana wisdom opens for you, a whole new realm of meaning and understanding will open for you too.

    Abhidhamma is uncontestedly Buddha's teaching. According to Buddha's own words 'Pubbe annanusuthesu dhammesu", it is his own findings. It was meant for those with a higher level of mental capacity, intellect and understanding called "Panna" or Pragna (Wisdom). It's just like General Science learnt at primary School level and gradually going towards Pure Sciences for students. For an example, even a concept formed by an eminent scientist, the Theory of Relativity, as students we learnt it at school in a simplified way. But the Law was developed by a scientist; not by a student in school or a teacher who teaches that in school or University. Abhidhamma was understood by the Arahants and other learned Bikkhus and they carried it along by oral tradition over the years, assisted by "Dhamma Sangayana" before it began to be preserved in texts later. For teaching purpose and for practice Buddha's Dhamma had to be categorised, thus giving rise to Thripitaka. One does not have to become a monk or necessarily a Buddhist in order to understand such a reality or a simple fact. therefore, it is an unqualified statement to make that 'Buddha never taught Abhidhamma'.

    • @inserasa
      @inserasa 3 роки тому +7

      Abhidharma is the philosophy or the very science of Buddhism, it is really the science of the universe, Buddha is the one who understands it , he tells it to the world through Suttas in which deep philosophy is illustrated in simplified manner in which ordinary human beings can understand.
      Abhidharma describes how thoughts are originated and different contents of different thoughts , what is the universe and what all its contents made up of , how both mind itself and physical world affects the mind to transform it from life to life constantly without a stop, how the living creatures in the world suffer endlessly due to not understanding the truth. only Buddha himself could find the truth himself and tells it to the world.
      no sangas or any followers have got to add anything into it, truth found by Buddha cannot be altered simplified or reform by anybody, because only a Buddha can do it.
      you may have a lot of questions now, most of your questions can be answered with reference to the Buddhas original teachings , or we can refer to the scholars in the subject, if wanted you may contact me.
      The explanations made in this video are to a certain extent true and correct but is incapable of expressing the very essence of this universal truth due to inadequacy of knowledge about real Buddhism,
      I wish him and all of us attain nibbana ,
      May all beings be free from sufferings! samanthaattanayaka@gmail.com

      I hope you have sorted this out?
      Cults are serious business and there are even Buddhist cults (I know of 2 main ones)
      Be careful of any tradition or religion who wants you to follow a living human being and their words.
      NEVER take any sort of initiation ritual and/or empowerment.
      If the Buddha could find the truth via his own effort and determination, so can we, but more so we have help from people like the Buddha, his teachings and the people who practice the truth.
      The truth isn't some sort of thing that is held by some sort of guru and you can only learn it if you do things for or to the guru, i/e give money, take an initiation or have sex with the guru.
      The truth is inside and all around us, not held by any one person, religion or tradition.

    This is what happens when western scrollers try to discredit and undervalue the teachings of Buddha. my comment is nothing against this monk as he is expressing his opinion based on his knowledge and understanding. it is very difficult for a person who grew up in a non-Buddhist (Theravada) to understand or believe some concepts in Buddhism. but if you read and try to understand Abhidrama you will realize this kind of expedition of the body mind and world, can't be just thoughts or discussions among ordinary or people of higher thought capacity. this has to be of a person with extraordinary capability of exploration. this is the highest form of science. this goes beyond what western science has discovered to date and the reason buddha doesn't speak or mention it in sutra Pitaka is this knowledge is not necessary to attend nirvana and it is not easy for a person with average knowledge to understand it. of cause, if someone reads it they will understand what it says and will gain the knowledge of Abhidharma, but they will not fully realize core of the teaching. so for most people it will be waisting time. as buddha said we have a limited time in this life and you should try your best to pave your path towards nirwana as much as possible . then only you will stand a chance to continue your journey to nirwana in the next life. not knowing what our next life or under which sercumstances we will be born, it it wise to focus on things which will help you to reach nirvana as soon as possible. and end suffering.

      I haven't heard anybody trying to discredit the teachings of the Buddha in this video. Your assertion itself doesn't make much sense as Bikkhu Bodhi is a well-known Therava monk who was ordained in Sri Lanka and who lived there many years. Why would he try to "undervalue the teachings of the Buddha" ? It doesn't make any sense.

    I watched this for 16 minutes and discontinue. I cannot accept that he denied the existence of heaven, reborn concept while claiming to be a Buddha follower. Beside, criticizing that Buddha went to heaven or not, it does not make audience understand the subject better at all. It is purely just to satisfy his own will. I warn everyone that we cannot trust him as we do not know how much of his own idea were added in the teaching.

      True... In the samsara there r 31 planes of existence & there 6 heavens & 20 brahma worlds... The buddha confirmed all of them very clearly... U can't call ur self a follower of the buddha unless u accept the fact that 31 planes r true....

      Did he say he don't believe them or did he mean that people need not believe them so far? I came across many Buddhists especially Western Buddhists don't believe in heaven, rebirth or karma too, they are probably the beginners and haven't heard of those knowledge yet

      I went through the first 16 minutes twice, do you mean what he said at the 9th minute? He didn't say he don't believe in heaven or rebirth. He said he agree with the modern scholars on the "source" of the Abhidamma. Neither he nor the modern scholars don't agree on anything else
