    Just got my first leopard gecko and I stumbled across your channel. I really like how you present information. You're passionate about every reptile and really informative but you don't condemn people doing stuff wrong which I really like since moste people don't want to hurt their pets and are more likely to listen to someone who is as calm and friendly as you. Also I adore how calm your leopard geckos are and how easy you handle them. Your pets trust you and that's just more reason to listen to your info.

    Can confirm about the sand substrate. 25 years ago or so when I was a child my parents got me a leopard gecko. The pet store told us sand was the best substrate since they are “desert” animals. We didn’t know much about thermostats and GOOD thermometers (not the plastic analog ones in the big box pet store, but good thermometers) and we thought all was well. He lived for maybe 8 months to a year and then we found out the hard way the sand substrate caused internal bleeding. It was traumatizing as a child.
    To make a long story short, don’t use sand. Please don’t use sand. Please buy thermometers and legitimate thermostats and your gecko will be super happy and healthy. I love them

      Stone tile is the way. No impaction, hygienic, no snagging, no replacement costs, easy to remove and clean, I've never used anything else since. I put paper towels in his potty corner and the rest is all natural stone tile that helps him regulate his temperature and doesn't have risks. Sand is a tragedy in the reptile industry.

    I was 11 years old, back in 1999, when I owned a leopard gecko. It was the most laid back lizard that I ever owned. Prior to that, my family owned an Iguana named Salty and he was a real bastard---he would try to bite and whip us with his tail---so, feeding and cleaning his enclosure was a NIGHTMARE. After the experience with Salty the Iguana, it was very nice to get such a laid back lizard. I would definitely own a leopard gecko again.

    Hey Clint - would you consider updating this video with the current best practices for care? Under tank heaters aren’t really recommended anymore; it’s been shown that overhead heat (a par38 halogen on a dimmer) is far more beneficial. Colored lights actually harm their eyes! You’re so very respected for making these videos, and having an updated version of this popular pet lizard would be… just stinkin’ rad!

I use his videos in my classes and recommend him in the book I just wrote on pet leopard geckos. But if we kept doing things “like we’ve always done it,” we’d have leopard geckos in 10 gallon tanks and fed nothing but mealworms, or bearded dragons stuck in 40 BR tanks, and no forward movement. I literally bought a leo that had half of his 3 front left toes missing (his side ones were intact on the same left foot so he can still grip things and he has nails on those 2 outer ones.. but the 3 middle ones, literally look like they were cut in half, but they don't look sore at all. They are perfectly healed at this point just not as long and no nails of course compared to his other feet). I specifically bought him for this reason as the store had no idea how to care for him and he was just too precious and friendly to let him live that kind of life. I upgraded him to a mansion and now he's a boss with it lol!

    “These geckos are from the desert” they are from a desert type area. But do not put sand as their ground material in the cage when you decorate it. The sand can get in their food dish and that is bad cause when they eat the sand it can scratch and clog the intestines causing constipation and other problems which will eventually lead to death if untreated. Instead of a desert themed in closure make a jungle themed using slanted bark for them to climb on and soil or something I forgot the name of as a ground material.

    I was completely ridiculous with her as a child... I played with her in Lego battles 🤦
    After a rather "spirited" battle, I picked her up and... She bit me right on my nose. It's the only time she ever bit me. God, did I deserve it. That was the point I realized she was my friend, and not my toy.
    Our relationship became considerably healthier after that.
    Sadly, she died of cancer before I went to college. Godspeed, sweet little geck. You were such a good girl. May you get all the mealworms and crickets you could ever want, and have a fresh clean water bowl to poop in 🤪

    Wonderful video as always! One thing I really don't agree with however is the daily misting. That's definitely a way to give your leo a respiratory infection.
    Instead use a water dish. They drink readily out of dishes, they're just a bit secretive about it lol. and make sure you have a hide stuffed with wet paper towels or moss, that takes care of the shedding.
    Also the under tank heater is pretty much a must. bulbs tend to bother them and they need belly heat to properly digest food ^^

    • @ClintsReptiles
      @ClintsReptiles  7 років тому +3

      Agreed, daily spraying would not be ideal if your gecko enclosure lacks proper ventilation. You should only mist so that there are drops they can drink, but not so much that it doesn't dry completely within an hour or so.
      I too prefer heat mats. That is what I recommended in the video. But a red bulb can work.

    • @muddw3871
      @muddw3871 6 років тому +9

      Well, they aren't strictly nocturnal actually. They're crepuscular, meaning that they are awake at dawn and dusk. However, they shouldn't be handled in the middle of the day. They should be sleeping then.

    • @muddw3871
      @muddw3871 6 років тому +12

      Also, don't house them together. Some people say that you can house females together, but I don't reccomend it. Even with females, there's that risk of one fighting the other, stealing the other's food, or straight up killing eachother. You don't want to take that risk.

    When I had gecko's I handled them every single day to ensure they would realize that i'm no threat to them. Eventually I let them crawl on me and they would sit either in my neck or under my shirt where it's warm. I personally only had once 2 eggs, but nothing came of that unfortunately. Never fed them roaches, just the worms, crickets and sometimes wild coughed insects. I did notice that my male Gecko was really curious of my camera. Every time I opened their enclosure and had my camera with me he would directly come towards me and let himself be photographed. Sometimes even crawling on top of my camera on his own power. The females that I had were less fond of the camera, they would allow it but quickly disappear in one of the hiding spots.

Any tips on convincing my parents that I will be able to take care of these on my own? I would say that you would be best served to offer a varied diet. Beetle larvae (like meal worms and super worms) can be a good staple, but adding in other feeders will likely supply nutrients that may be lacking from a worm-only diet.

      My gecko is very picky and only eats live dubias and crickets (I hate crickets), even though she was fed mealworms when she was in the breeders care. I'm going to see if she can handle some worms again because I have someone with birds I can give them to.

    Just got a tangerine leopard gecko today and I'm absorbing all the information I can get, I've watched your channel a while but this is extremely helpful and reassuring that my research was solid and I made a good choice for my first terrestrial reptile! I've helped care for my brothers red eared sliders but I've been intimidated by reptile care until recently. Nonetheless I've really deeply wanted a lizard so I buckled down, did the research, and I got Kirby today. I look forward to getting to know him and gain his trust 🥰
    Update: two years later, and kirby is doing well! When i adopted him he had a docked tail that was in the process of growing back, but it managed to grow back seamlessly and he can still move it! The vet said she could barely tell hed ever lost it and she has two 20 year old geckos.
    Hes healthy and content with a nice, big, exploration friendly enclosure with five different hiding spots. To be honest his enclosure is bigger than he needs (but not too big, he has a low rise 50 gallon tank lol).
    Hes never vocalized or showed significant distress, hes just a bit flighty and doesn't appear to be comfortable being held for long periods.
    I respect that and most of our relationship is me feeding him, giving him water in his beloved wading pool, and watching him walk around. He gets so excited when i reach in to feed him though, i love seeing his wiggle walk on the way to get his worms.
    I personally recommend tile substrate, you can take them out and clean them with precision and efficiency without needing to constantly pay for a replacement substrate. Ive had stone tiles from lowes (that fit perfectly in the tank) for a year and a half and wouldnt recommend anything else! You can also stack tiles to make "stairs" (not too tall or steep obviously). I even use tile for my beardies enclosure. Ideal reptile substrate that helps keep them warm and clean.

      I've had mine five years now and never misted once and I'm not starting now. anyone reading this thinking about getting a gecko: if you don't want to watch your gecko potentially die a slow and painful death, make sure you have an exotic vet near you, and don't get a gecko if youre not willing/able to pay the fee for a vet appointment there in an emergency. i've seen so many geckos die because people don't get their pet medical help because they can't afford it or because they wanted to treat it at home themselves. if you're a kid, don't expect mom or dad to be willing/able to pay or drive you 2 hours to an exotic vet. if you're a parent and can't afford the vet or travel, you might want to wait to get a gecko until that's doable because it'll break your kids heart if their little friend dies.

      If you’re a child and you have a pet you probably expect your parents to pay for anything that pet needs.
      In my opinion the financial responsibility is on the parents more than it’s on the child.
      Children have no option in financial decisions but they should take care of their animal and bring anything they are concerned about to their parents attention and the parents should be checking every other day on the health of the pets.
      Definitely agree with your other great points.
