After 40 years in the Metro you would likely develop cancer, which is common in the books. However since most die to mutants, background radiation honestly isn't a big deal. The ACTUAL threat in irradiated areas is dust and other breathable particles. If you breath these in, they will get into your vital organs (lungs) and kill you VERY quickly. That is why you HAVE to wear a filtered mask, like they do in the games. It's why hair products cannot be used in nuclear fallout, because the dust will linger in the hair after you leave. It really made me tear up the dlc and the dead city level of metro exodus, its truly a masterpiece. Not to say the other levels were bad, i enjoyed the whole game but some parts were more engaging than others (mainly the lineal ones). Still, if it wasn't for the odyssey the aurora and the crew took before, this chapter wouldn't feel the same. RIP the two colonels
To this day is consider the Dead City of Novosibirsk the most realistic take on a post nuclear city and the DLC for it God added more to how if people did survive in a city like that it would be both so well fitting and horrifying. Thank you for this video
It's still pretty unrealistic. Nuclear warheards are engineered for destruction, so most of the fissile material is used up. There's very little fallout, actually.
When i finished Metro Exodus (it was 4 am i got bad ending) i was literally shocked how good this game is and its my favourite singleplayer game also is pretty hard (i played without titles on russian on the hardest difficulty without hud)
Playing Russian games in Russian is always the best way to do it. I like the little details, like how Sam's pronunciation is a bit off from everyone else's (because he's American)
Without tittles? Well if you speak Russian then okay, but if you don't then you just have no idea what people are talking about. xd Which is counter-immersive since Artyom CAN understand everyone since he's Russian. :]
Cobalt bombs were also called "salted bombs" and were supposedly only theoretical. The objective was to create a weapon that could siege your enemies for years after deployment. The cobalt is changed into cobalt 60, which has a half life of just over 5 years. The half life makes it impractical to wait out the short term high intensity radiation in bomb shelters while still producing enough of it to kill anyone who is caught outside. The name comes from the phrase "salting the earth" which prevents plant growth
Yeah, the game isnt realistic. Even IRL, the nuke winter was basically made up, and even if humanity managed to somehow create enough bombs to create it, there is no way that it would last for decades. The danger of nukes IRL isnt in what happens in the short term, or the long term, but the mid term (1-5 years). After some 10 years the site of a nuke explosion should be rid of any dangerous levels of radiation and should be navigable even without protective gear. Cobalt bombs were designed to push back that safe stage, and prolong the dangerous stage, but even then, you should be easily able to half the amount of green stuff rations for everyone after 5 years, then half it again after another 5, and after 5 years, everyone would basically require 8 times less than when the bombs fell. But again, Metro (book) is a metaphor for the Russian society (thats why they are banned in Russia), not a study of the post war effects on the society and nature.
I can assure you, through military and government agencies, the capabilities of US/Russia/China nuclear wise are nothing like how they are depicted in Metro. It’s FAR worse. And what’s scary is our incompetent leaders are now threatening nuclear war like it’s nothing.
5:20 Understand, it's not called zelonka randomly. It is called that because that's what the Soviets called their equivalent to iodine, which they used as a panacea for random injuries and scrapes (because it is an antiseptic), and I am sure that's why the magical radmeds were called that.
yeah, because of the familiarity of the substance’s look and name. i don’t think that there are many people using it today but in 00’s it was quite popular as a common treat for such conditions as chickenpox - basically aiding each area of skin affected by rush with a touch of Zelenka. so naming a radmed by something that familiar to population clearly has its benefits on psychological level.
What would be amazing would be an open world Metro game in Moscow where you can fully explore all the tunnels (and what you can of the surface without dying). I know that it would be insane to design a game that large with the detail they put into the Metro games. Maybe it could be about a younger Khan learning about the supernatural stuff in the metro as he on some grand mission or when he comes because to where ever he disappeared to and can help evacuate people to Lake Baikal before some threat ends all life in the metro.
Guess the farthest we've got is the Ksathriya DLC from Metro Last Light, although it's basically just a prop hunt. I do agree that Khan is one of the most interesting characters in the series, though.
Dude this game but massive online multiplayer where there are other stalkers and you can hide your loot but everyone can find each other’s loot if you look hard enough (Please please please god)
Well, thank you for finally answering a question that had been racking my brain for years. Novosibirsk was always a source of fascination for my in Exodus due to how ultimate it's destruction it was. Moscow, horrible as it was, allowed for life to live on the surface. Novosibirsk, on the other hand, was allegedly hit harder than all the other targets in Russia. I didn't understand why it had been hit so heavily. Now however, I have a better idea. The city was not innocent as it turned out; they were creating bio-weapons and by extension, a cure of the weapon's effects controlled only by them. Good god man... Horrendous.
i mean can you help them though? by the looks of all the mutation the US and NATO heavily used their own bio weapons as well. that's just how the world was and still is ma man. some countries just don't want to give up their top places and some countries believe that making sure to be as strong as these arrogant nations is the only way to rise up.
Novosibirsk wasn't entirely deserted, when Artyom progresses through the city he can catch glimpses of Dark Ones obeserving him but staying distant. Which is odd, but interesting. Thought I'd point that out.
I was going to write a theory at the end of the video to say that I think this is where the Dark Ones are based now. I kinda said that in my Dark Ones video though. Does seem like this is their place to live!
@@WiseFish also, it would explain how Miller was able to find Artyom so easily. Because he did say he had a sort of feeling where Artyom was going to be, so maybe the Dark Ones influenced Miller into being able to locate him.
Absolutely loved this part of the game. When they first drove into the city, you really felt that this place was incredibly hostile. It felt like descending straight into hell.

@@WiseFish Gods do I know it! This is the 10th time of me replying Metro exodus and I'm still finding all these little things and tricks and learning more about the game every time I play it
Novosibirsk got hit during the evacuation process of the city, as can be seen due to the sheer number of abandoned Military vehicles and the fact that Miller also said so. Like Moscow, those lucky enough to be in the underground tunnels of the Metro would've survived the initial blast but would soon succumb to the amount of radiation left behind. Though it is unknown to how hard Novosibirsk was bombed it was supposed by one of the crew members (forgot his name even though I just beat the game) that the city was hit harder and also was bombed with a Cadium Bomb, which essentially is a Nuclear bomb that leaves behind even more Radiation. When Artyom and Miller first get to the City, it's outer buildings seemed to of survived the initial blast as well though was still damaged, once inside the Metro system of the city there appeared to of been no one left alive until we reach further down into the Metro and find a execution chamber and then a battlefield, It seems that the Habits of Moscow's Metro also reached Novosibirsk just on a much larger scale. There are armored carts that strangely enough look exactly like the Panzer carts that the Reich's use in Metro 2033 and Metro Last Light, however we do not see any Reich Soldiers, just old Corpses with rags. As for the people that were in this Metro system it was stated that the Government had managed to also survive the bombings and took control over Novosibirsk Metro and were apparently very hostile to anyone who dared to oppose them, this of course lead to riots which is also the cause of the abandoned battlefields we see in Exodus. On the surface there is nothing but abandoned buildings and spirits of the dead, a true hell that Novosibirsk became. All that's left of the buildings is the ghostly reminders of what happened on that fateful day in 2013. Nothing but haunted abandoned buildings with corpses and mutated monsters ready to pounce on you as soon as they get the chance. The city is a dead, haunted hellhole. It was no question to why people stay away from it...
I also found it interesting how Novosibirsk has moments where you also see the Dark Ones, but briefly. It was like they were guiding you to what you needed there and it showed they did potentially find a home
SPOILERS! Just finished Sam's Story last night and Two Colonels today (yes I played backwards fortunately both of them are not connected) there are some things I did not understand during my playthrough of Two Colonels why Tolya killed himself, I only thought he lost hope because his son died, thanks for the clarity.
They killed his son as well, if the son survived I’d imagine he wouldn’t have killed himself but that with the huge betrayal of the ones at the top just caused him to loose hope and realised he’d killed all those people to just be betrayed.
@@WiseFish Btw, can you make an analysis/thoughts/explanation/how can the endings can lead to a new metro game, but Sam as the protagonist, (because it felt like Artyom's story concluded once the Aurora reached the lake) regarding the ending of Sam's Story.

Thank you so much for this video❤ This location gave me such a huge anxiety, since Novosibirsk is my home town and it is portrayed in such striking details in the game... Just finished metro exodus for the first time tonight and this level floored me. The rest of the game felt kind of slow and not really like metro but they really nailed it with the Novosibirsk level.

4:00 talking about the tank sealing the entrance. The round would probably be he or heat as sabot wouldn't do much, but put a 30-ish mm hole in the concrete
Late reply, but personally i would think that they shoot to GET INTO the Metro, as in the trailers they shut Metro doors after some time right before the bombs hits. Sadly the tank crews were too late and everyone dies above anyways.
There is a technocracy of mutant people located on the other side of the river, but has been cut off from the rest of the Novosibirsk Metro due to a collapsed bridge, these guys may have not been affected by the worms and the war of the "Big Metro", so they might still be alive even after the events of Metro Exodus, but they also aren't canonical, so I don't know.
As odd as this comparison may sound, this part of metro lore reminds me of the underground school from the last of us, people who sy not have thrived but did survive, all being brought down by a single domino falling, and all hell breaking loose. A door being left unlocked, or a stalker stepping into the wrong building, small seemingly inconsequential actions bringing the end to whole generations.

@@joshuagraham2843 the story is pretty sad, novosbirk destroyed itself in a civil war just as artyom and the gang left moscow, and the other guy said the radiation was so high that at 50 miles away from the town it was as high as in moscow

This game series will always have a special place in my heart I’m sad not that many people know about it but I’m also glad it’s sort of a hidden gem
There's very little fallout, actually.
except for the mutant mold and worms.
@@JonathanBell-xl4dl and the timescale, green stuff, and many other things. So basically not realistic at all.

When i finished Metro Exodus (it was 4 am i got bad ending) i was literally shocked how good this game is and its my favourite singleplayer game also is pretty hard (i played without titles on russian on the hardest difficulty without hud)
Well thats how you experience it properly
Ranger hardcore is always the way to go👍
Playing Russian games in Russian is always the best way to do it. I like the little details, like how Sam's pronunciation is a bit off from everyone else's (because he's American)
@@TheKingOfJordan1 i know i played "Sam's Story" DLC i really see that he is different
Without tittles? Well if you speak Russian then okay, but if you don't then you just have no idea what people are talking about. xd
Which is counter-immersive since Artyom CAN understand everyone since he's Russian.
@@pavelslama5543dude fucking Chernobyl is still radioactive, just think about how many bombs were sent.
The first thing I noticed when I saw this place in-game was the complete lack of nuclear weapon damage, unlike Moscow.
Cobalt bombs were also used in the bombs under the urals in Dr strangelove's doomsday device
Metro is cool but where are the trains?

Well the channel finally got pushed to me and I just subbed right now, watched all the last few videos and they were all good.
@@FortressLordJP193 Same, that Metro 2033 lore video was incredibly narrated, even made me almost tear up.

The Tsar fish blessed me with this video, you have a new worshipper.
@@WiseFish yeah, it kinda does until they're ready to live amongst regular Humans peacefully.
@@WiseFish also, it would explain how Miller was able to find Artyom so easily. Because he did say he had a sort of feeling where Artyom was going to be, so maybe the Dark Ones influenced Miller into being able to locate him.
@@EnclaveSOC-102 there’s also a cut line from the studio recordings where Miller says he saw a Dark One. I added it to that video if you wanna hear it
Absolutely loved this part of the game. When they first drove into the city, you really felt that this place was incredibly hostile. It felt like descending straight into hell.
I only played the first two Metro games. But one day I will check the third one out.
Great video man, I can't wait to see more of your videos.😆

Dude, if you liked the first two games, I have no idea what the ever living scheiße you're waiting for. Make "one day" TODAY if you can, because Exodus is probably the most beautiful and best written game I have ever seen.
Plus it came out while I worked at Gamestop and it is CRIMINALLY underrated because nobody bought it when I was on shift. So please, give them your money so we can get a sequel lmao
@@JohnSmith-xv2ob the metro series in general is criminally underrated
@@WiseFish Gods do I know it! I won't lie and say Metro 2033 and Last Light were the most polished experiences ever, but the atmosphere and story just drew me in way too hard to ignore, and when I got to Exodus, my expectations were BLOWN AWAY. If all three games played like Exodus, I would play Metro nonstop forever and ever.
Speaking of which, maybe we should nudge 2A to make a re-redux where the first two games are tuned to work in the Exodus engine. Or at least release more DLC.
Beware that this game still has _a lot_ of bugs, from physics, to skyboxes tearing, screen tearing, aaaaaaand crashes. It might not be that bad on PC, but you probably won't like what's in store if you're on ranger hardcore.
I was in awe when this level loaded for the first time. Going from open world to traditional metro leveling was quite nice too. Haunting and intriguing at the same time

Ty. Genuinely care for the DEEP lore of metro, I’ve done everything u can to do to learn and explore the metro and it’s universe. And I love hearing your opinions and facts on it.
Although I wish it was a longer level, in terms of the story, it was perfect. 2 Colonels really did a good job expanding on it, too. Reminds me of the Sierra Madre in NV.
My first theory of the slime was that it was ether a mass of fused worms (metro 2033) or that it was a Fatburg infesting the city- possibly even living or fusing life into itself
Amazing quality for such a small channel, please keep making these.
We need an open world game set in Moscow metro with all the stations being explorable

Awsome vid, could watch this for hours!
I just found your channel and so far it’s awesome, could you make a full lore of Yamantau?
I just finished Two colonels a few days ago. I knew what was going to happen through deduction, but it was still heartbreaking nonetheless.
Just finished playing exodus and I'd say its THE BEST post apocalyptic game I've ever played in a long while, good ending too.

Where did you get the lore about novo being hit by cobalt due to the experiments going on there? Can't ever remember finding this out in the game.

I think i ejnoyed Novosibirsk part probably the most out of entire game, since it hat closest to that haunting atmosphere first two games excelled at. Dont take me wrong, i love Metro Exodus and things it brought and i hope next game will build from these, but i missed all those mind-fucking parts. Volga and Taiga were ok, that were the places where i wouldnt expect too many, in Yamantau you had bigger problems, so there it would be distracting, but Caspian deffinitely should have had more.
Novosibirsk like hell on earth, i got spine chill every time i walk though the corner, mostly with the monster gorilla
I loved this part of Exodus going back in to the tunnels and then again from "the other side" in two Colonel's

Thank you so much for this video❤ This location gave me such a huge anxiety, since Novosibirsk is my home town and it is portrayed in such striking details in the game... We, Novosiberians, used to joke that Novosibirsk in the game looked just like it does every other winter, but now with the war in Ukraine and ever growing tension betwen Russia and NATO the joke doesn't sound that funny anymore.
Nice place.

Just finished metro exodus for the first time tonight and this level floored me. The rest of the game felt kind of slow and not really like metro but they really nailed it with the Novosibirsk level.

Still, they stored the bioweapons there. My mistake, however it was said that they were used out there in Volga
Note to self: Stay Away from all Institutes in the event of the apocalypse.

Novosibirk gave me the vibes of the Winderhome in Frostpunk as both were dead cities found by the protagonist of the game
I found the reveal that there is cities/towns all over the world alive contacting one another and there is breathable air unexpected but welcome
You should do a video on the Sierra Madre and the Dead money DLC of Fallout New Vegas. I think your voice and video style would be perfect.
Absolutely chilling, no pun intended
These are awesome! More metro lore videos please!
I have a big fear of the uncanny valley, so stuff like humanimals are rough. But watching your smiling neighbors die and scream in agony and anger, 16:45, it was really the scariest part for me in the entire trilogy, including dlcs
Yet another banger WiseFish!! Keep it up man
Thank you dude!
