    How to study Korean and Go Billy Korean are my favorite resources. They both explain grammar in ways that are very easy to understand but are still in depth enough to actually be helpful. And How to study Korean gives so much useful vocab. I also agree about TTMIK not being my favorite, even though so many people swear by it. I think it can be helpful as a supplemental resource, like their podcasts or watching videos on random topics, but after doing the first few books I just don't like their course as a primary resource. You mentioned that they don't give extensive explanations, but another thing I found frustrating is the excessive use of romanization. It makes it so hard to force your brain to read in Korean when the romanization is right under the sentence you're trying to read, so I felt like my reading skills were stunted when using those books on top of not having enough grammar practice to remember things long term.

    I used talk to me in Korean for a while, but then I started learning with how to study Korean and I realized that ttmik was leaving something which I considered really important out of their lessons, or at least out of their first levels, and how to study Korean teaches you that from the get-go, so yeah I think how to study Korean is way better.

    • @shreyanshimanu
      @shreyanshimanu 2 роки тому +6

      @@Alena-cq1ze ik u didn't actually ask me but I feel like they leave out "in depth stuff". That happens to be one way I can place it. Like for example they'd explain the basic vowels but wouldn't explain the three "elements" that make them (horizontal line, vertical line and the circle or short line i:e earth, man, sun) or even how they are formed (the yin , yum etc)
      they wouldn't explain who made korean, how, why and what parts are borrowed from Chinese and English and how all of it matters
      As a beginner you wouldn't know the difference of not knowing but little things like this make a huge difference

I have been learning Korean for almost a year and I still cant speak sentences but I can understand like half of what is being said. Like if i am watching a Kdramam I understand a lot and dont have to use the captions but I cant make sentences. I know some people have different speeds they learn. Hopefully soon I will be able to speak it well and have conversations.

    Only started learning Korean a few weeks ago, but howtostudykorean is the GOAT! The lessons are really long & rn I’m in a busy period of life (doing a boot camp to career switch, new job etc), so sometimes when I want to study but don’t have a lot of time I’ll do a TTMIK lesson, but in my opinion, howtostudykorean is superior- it’s so incredibly detailed yet explores complex concepts in an easily digestible way.

    Thank you so much for this video Natalia! Your content keeps me so motivated. I started Korean on Duolingo (I know I know…) like 1 and a half months ago for fun and I’m racing through so quickly but because that just really doesn’t do the job I’ve always substituted with additional grammar and vocab resources. I’m just now getting more serious about it and I want to switch to other free resources for good, the amount that is available is so overwhelming though! I obviously can’t use every single one at the same time and I’m having a hard time right now choosing a few for a good study routine. If anyone has any recommendations, please hit me up :D Also English isn’t my first language but since the English based resources are just enormously better than German based resources I am gladly twisting my brain learning a foreign language IN a foreign language lol. I’m sure some of you know this struggle

    Wow....
    Thank you, thank you, thank you!
    My head is exploding with choices and possibilities! I remember starting languages decades back, with just one "German/French Made Easy" book (audio? What's audio?) - and good luck finding anything for Korean.

    Hi Natalia, your channel is wonderful! I'm an older beginning student and not at all tech savvy. Can I ask you what it is you write on? Is that an iPad? Or something else? What brand and model? Keep up the fantastic work! I want to start learning foreign languages to keep my brain young. My wife and I enjoy Korean dramas, so figured I'd start with Korean. You are adorable and I love your entusiasm!

    As someone who is almost done with Talk to me in Korean, I agree. Also, I recommend their book "Korean Q&A Sentence Patterns" They explain a lot of intermediate vocabulary in context with natural conversational sentences and grammar. It's really useful to learn how to say more things and for vocab

    Websites: TTMIK, Sejeong are AMAZING websites for free. Currently trying out LINQ as well for me--having fun with it. But Talk to Me in Korean or Sejeong is more than enough to get anyone started (and then some).
    Apps: Lingodeer if you like to gamify your learning, but I only recommend this at the start until 3 months or so. After that, Anki is amazing for spaced repetition. Also, Quizlet for your own flashcard app. :)
    Textbooks: The TTMIK books are good if you're following their course outline, for -sure-. Golden standard I think. Apart from that, I generally don't use books to study grammar so I keep it simple with stuff like "1000 essential korean verbs/nouns" that are all grouped by category. It's like a pre-made mind map for you to just study. :)

    Hi there. My name is Jacquie. I’m a 53 year old kpop/kdrama junkie who has decided to learn the language. I love this video you created about free resources. My question is this: for my age, which resource do you recommend I start with? I like structured learning because I have a TBI from years ago that has left me with memory issues. I need repetition along with the education. It helps to know the “why’s” in everything I do so I can connect something to the specific thing I’m trying to learn. I may be asking a lot of you, but if you could just point me in the right direction, I’ll take it from there. (Or at least try to lol) thank you so much!
