My tips for learning a different languange is to BUILD VOCABULARY... I feel like most of the time when you're taught a language in a class you learn phrases but you cant communicate without knowing any words so building vocab will significantly help you form grammatically correct sentences and become more fluent. You can build vocab fast by learning the words for everyday foods, items, people, animals, clothes essentially learning like a baby. Hope this helps!

The most important thing learning a language is not the vocabulary but how it sounds. Babies just listen and pick up the language by listening over and over again. If you never know how a word is pronounced and how it sounds like, you will end up saying e.g. "sink" instead of "think"

Also draw out your objects you want to remember rather than write them out in English. It helps your brain to remember objects quickly without thinking it in English.
Omg.. My aunt learned the whole korean language through kdramas! We went to korea for a vacation and she was conversing with the locals like a boss.. she can't write but she understands and speaks really good according to everyone we met.. lol

Try Anki! I downloaded a Korean vocab. It is like the most essential vocab you need. Good start. I still can't read Korean so I have my Hangul chart with me to help me read hahaha. I wish it had the vocab and a sentence as an example though...I am also studying Japanese and the Anki deck has that and I find it so helpful.
The best way to learn a language is to go to a region that speaks that language. Only need a year to two to learn the basics and the fundamentals of grammar/vocab/slangs.
I am also learning Korean and it is hard especially if you don't have someone to talk to in Korean Language you tend to forget phrases and terms 😓. You're lucky you have korean friends who can correct you if you're pronouncing it wrong. I wish I have korean friends.

@@24680965 hi! Oh so a great app to learn Hangul is Scripts. It let's you match up the sounds and also practise drawing the letters with spaced repetition. To learn actual Korean words, a good app is Drops (partner app of Scripts). Reddit is a website/app where you can join different communities of people that share your interests. You can go to your app store and search for all the things mentioned. Let me know if you have any other questions, I can send you my reddit username too if you want more help!
She knows more in 2 months than I do in 8 months but then I remember that she has a Korean teacher, Korean friends, Korean restaurants, Korea town that all help her and converse with her in Korean. And I only have kpop and kdramas and myself😔😔. Good job inga keep practicing👏👏
I’m a korean adoptee to white parents and I LOVE this video. My parents never hid my culture from me and they even took me to various korean language schools in our area at a young age, but there was always this shame I felt about not being able to just innately pick it up or naturally speak it even though I was only really immersed in the language as an infant. Hearing conversational Korean brings up a lot of happy emotions for me and I am so proud of Inga for doing all this in 2 months!! I’m also learning Korean on duolingo but I somehow never thought about writing stuff down again and taking actual notes 😅😅 super inspired now
I know that feeling... My parent used to live in Italy, and when I was a baby, I heard Italian all day and understood it, too. It influenced me a lot, even after my mother moved to another country. When I finally relearned Italian this year it felt like I was getting my culture back. But oh man, the first times I talked Italian, especially in front of my mom, I was so ashamed

some of these comments saying korean is so easy and bragging that it took them like 5 minutes to learn- *im 90% sure inga sounds better than you oml* edit: learning a new language depends on *each person-* their *ability+focus,* the *way* they learn, and their *environment.* its not like it takes exactly 1 year to learn korean- *it differs.* Im korean myself but at the start I was horrible at korean- my mom would put me in classes but I wouldn't understand. Then I started watching korean dramas and music. Every language has so many *branches* so no language is *"easy"* it matters on the person- how they learn and how interested they are it- like you could learn formal korean- but *slang- sayings* are an important part of every language. don't be discouraged if it takes you a long time- i was like *1* when I came to america and I didn't learn korean until I was *11.* I'm 14 rn currently and I still get confused sometimes- idk in conclusion: *learning korean differs from each person- and i can assure you it does not take 5 minutes to learn oml*
Learning hangul is pretty easy, but when it comes to pronunciation and grammar that's when the real deal starts. Learning the alphabet though is just like 5% of learning the language.

You could learn it in the comfort of your own home, and speaking to native speakers isn’t that necessary until you’ve immersed tons in the language and you want to start to output.

I remember when this was posted I was just learning the alphabet, now I can easily understand (most) everyday conversations! Korean is such a beautiful language, I really want to continue my lessons and hopefully I'll be able to call myself fluent someday ☺️
Putting your whole phone in a different language can sometimes be confusing, so what I do is if you can change the language in just one or two apps (like Instagram) but keep your phone in your native language. 👍👍

I've been learning french for three years and am almost fluent. A few tips always practice the language right before you go to sleep it helps with memorization and two never skip a lesson you will forget a lot. Repetition is key.
@@GoToMan If you have access to it, use the Canadian curriculum for french ( Grades 6-8 is most useful) because we are a bilingual country, but we mostly speak English. France's curriculum is too hard!😂

It’s true that I have been learning for years but I’ve only been self-studying (no lessons or anything) which is why my progress is kind of slow. Me , a 13 year old asian which speaks fluently Spanish , Cantonese and English . And also knows / understands Mandarin and French . Now wants to try Korean , yikes . Next thing on my bucket list after Korean is Japanese and after that is Dutch . Damn I really love languages , wish me luck
All Im using for learning Korean is UA-cam and Duolingo, I only use duolingo to get used to the characters and the sounds but I use youtube for vocabulary. I also recommend that you label your room with Korean words, For example, Labeling your door as door in Korean, Thats very helpful to memorize the vocabulary.
Finally someone who actually shows the struggles of learning a different language. Tired of hearing people say it’s their first time speaking Korean then in another video they will say well I took Korean in college for 3 years. Like really lol 😆
Tbf she had already studied korean before and even shows the notes from when she studied. I havent studied french in a decade and went back recently and was suprised by how quickly i was able to catch up so even this video was a bit misleading tbh
As a Korean who is trying to learn German and French, I can see how much effort you put on Korean. The methods you tried are actually what I consider the best methods( trying talking with native speakers, changing the phones language etc) . I'd suggest watching Korean dramas too! It would help you get used to the sound of Korean and even help you catch some word or phrases( personally I recommend watching without the subtitles) I'm glad to hear that you like learning Korean! As a German who is trying to learn Spanish and wants to try to learn Korean I totally agree. I almost picked up all of my English by watching TV shows or UA-cam videos in english. What I think is important , if you can't talk to a native speaker, is that you try to get away from not being sure how the language actually sounds by hearing a native speaker speak. Even though speaking to a native improves your communication skills even more, doing something is better than doing nothing.

I also learn Korean (by myself) with my friends' help. I think watching K-dramas and a lot of variety shows can really help you study new words, slangs, and pronunciation. Now I can speak Korean and also write hangul, also sometimes I am able to watch variety or dramas without subtitle (not the whole sentence). I hope this helps you improving your skills! I think your Korean is already great, especially when you study for only 2 months.

Megumi Hayashida Korean alphabet is completely different from hanja(chinese alphabet)!! Korean language and vocabulary are influenced by china but Korean alphabet is based on completely different system.

I've been trying to learn Korean for around 7 years, got to about Inga's level in 5 years. So any tips on how to speed up the process? I try to practice 30 minutes a day.
Find a video series/grammar book and learn 1-3 lessons daily- Whatever you can do and review those grammar structures. Find podcasts for natives or kdramas/ other media for natives to watch and listen to, turn on Korean subtitles and off English if you can do you avoid reading English instead of listening to Korean. Immerse yourself, practice writing, and use a dictionary app on your phone to search up new words. Learn verb conjugations and more, maybe use TOPIK exams prep or practice courses. Find other vids of people and how they learned to find your path, good luck!!
If you don't mind how long it takes, but really want to get to a high level, this is my advice: Try to find a book (series), website or app that teaches everything (from a beginner to an advanced level) that you like and stick with it. (If it's a book, make sure it has audio). With every new lesson, you'll know that you're improving. Regularly revise the words that you learn through it (perhaps through memrise, I recommend using English as the word that is already given so that you have to write the Korean word). Say the Korean word out loud when you revise it. For books, book series of a Korean university would probably be good. For example Yonsei (can be quite academic), Sogang (focuses more on speaking) or Ewha (I feel like this one is somewhere between Yonsei and Sogang when it comes to the reading-speaking ratio). And while studying, keep watching some Korean programs, in the beginning preferably those about daily life stuff.
1. Fluently learn the Korean alphabet first and all the basic pronunciations before reading sentences or doing any other stuff, like: ㄱㄴㄷㄹㅁㅂㅅㅇㅈㅊㅋㅌㅍㅎ etc. 2. Listen to Korean podcasts or talk shows with English subs
I think its better to actually have a korean teacher, i just recently got one from this language app called Preply it has many language teachers on it however you do have to pay. My teacher costs $20 an hour so I just schedule 1 hr twice a week and I've already gotten alot better. But the best way to get better is to make friends with someone who speaks Korean cause alot of the time koreans don't say the things that are in textbooks. it helps you learn the slang and pronunciation. Also watching reality TV or korean UA-camrs also help with learning new vocabulary, pronunciation and listening skills

As a native Korean speaker, I find it fascinating when non native people try to learn the language. I think that Inga did incredibly well and I'm very impressed at her progress in only 2 months.
Inga’s approach is similar to mine: duolingo, get textbooks, change phone language to korean. Differences: I cant afford to take actual lessons yet :’) hoping someday I’ll get there. Also.. changing phone language to korean is really frustrating so I ended up changing it back to english😂

Yaaaay I'm so happy for you!!! Learning a new language is one of the hardest things to do, but it's also one of the most rewarding. Especially considering that Korean is so different from English, you did an amazing job! I remember studying abroad in Japan for a semester in college and being completely thrown off by the language, but it was so fun and challenging that it really inspired me to study harder. Keep it up!
Tip: Watch a lot of kdramas. I've picked up little phrases and can understand some sentences and I haven't even properly started learning Korean yet! Which kind of makes sense because I'm an audible and visual learner so it's probable why I've picked it up so quickly.
I started to learn korean in july 31 of 2020 I know I have a long way to go. For those who are wanting or learning korean I'm going to tell you to keep going and dont let anyone let your self down! Keep going!!
Here are some off the tips that worked for me (it’s been 30 days I stared pertaining and I can say a few sentences in Korean 😬) 1. learn Hangul be perfect with Hangul 2.pronounce everything you are learning ex: 감사 합니디 (it means thank u in Korean ) gamsahamida = gam-sa-hamida and try making a sentence with the word so you know how to use the word in sentences while speaking to someone in Korean 3.for easier writing and pronunciation separate the words like ex: ㄱ+ㅏ+ㅁ+ㅅ+ㅏ+ㅎ+ㅏ+ㅂ+ㄴ+ㅣ+ㄷ+ㅣ=감사 합니디 . 4.practice vocabulary in a book 📖,flowers in Korean ,names in Korean ,places in Korean , and many more and read them out loud and write 5.out a test for yourself every 2 weeks to see how much you have learned 6.never give up on your self 💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜
I’ve been juggling french, japanese and korean and honestly i learnt most korean from watching kpop content 😂 Also french for me is manageable since I’ve been learning it from a young age. Japanese on the other hand is really confusing for me...I’ve memorised the hiragana and katakana and i am learning new kanji everyday. I’m also thinking about picking up sign language. And i also want to add that I have true respect for those who are multilangual. 💕

I am learning Korean to become fluent in a culture I enjoy. It is a rough start when you speak English because your not used to moving your mouth they way Koreans do to form words. I've been learning German and Korean off and on for a few years now. Consistency is so important. I really struggle and feel like vocabulary slips from my brain easily when I take long breaks. I'm back to taking regular lessons on italki and have a few apps to practice (Babbel and LingoDeer) with when I'm just sitting around away from home. At times all the media I consume will be in my target languages but during this time with covid I've taken steps back from that so I'm less overwhelmed. During my time at home, I have also been trying my hand at Korean. It began because my daughter is really into K-pop, hip-hop and R&B. We also watch a lot of the buzzfeed coverage of Korean artists. Since we are together day in and out, I’ve found myself liking the music and falling madly in love with K-dramas. I started by wanting to be able to understand the shows and zone out to the music if I wanted to, but now I too have fallen in love with the culture and want to move there and explore the culture with my children. I know I have a ways to go, but I’m picking up on things. Hopefully I’ll be able to acquire a tutor/teacher as well once I move to Seattle. I really enjoyed your video and you’ve given me great hope. Try Anki! I downloaded a Korean vocab. It is like the most essential vocab you need. Good start. I still can't read Korean so I have my Hangul chart with me to help me read hahaha. I wish it had the vocab and a sentence as an example though...I am also studying Japanese and the Anki deck has that and I find it so helpful.
The best way to learn a language is to go to a region that speaks that language. Only need a year to two to learn the basics and the fundamentals of grammar/vocab/slangs.

To learn actual Korean words, a good app is Drops (partner app of Scripts). Reddit is a website/app where you can join different communities of people that share your interests. I’m a korean adoptee to white parents and I LOVE this video. My parents never hid my culture from me and they even took me to various korean language schools in our area at a young age, but there was always this shame I felt about not being able to just innately pick it up or naturally speak it even though I was only really immersed in the language as an infant. Hearing conversational Korean brings up a lot of happy emotions for me and I am so proud of Inga for doing all this in 2 months!! I’m also learning Korean on duolingo but I somehow never thought about writing stuff down again and taking actual notes 😅😅 super inspired now
I know that feeling... My parent used to live in Italy, and when I was a baby, I heard Italian all day and understood it, too. It influenced me a lot, even after my mother moved to another country. edit: learning a new language depends on *each person-* their *ability+focus,* the *way* they learn, and their *environment.* its not like it takes exactly 1 year to learn korean- *it differs.* Im korean myself but at the start I was horrible at korean- my mom would put me in classes but I wouldn't understand. Then I started watching korean dramas and music. it's pretty easy in the sense you can "read" korean/ hangul like within a plane ride from korea to UK (see Korean Englishman episode)
Learning hangul is pretty easy, but when it comes to pronunciation and grammar that's when the real deal starts. Learning the alphabet though is just like 5% of learning the language.

You could learn it in the comfort of your own home, and speaking to native speakers isn’t that necessary until you’ve immersed tons in the language and you want to start to output.

Putting your whole phone in a different language can sometimes be confusing, so what I do is if you can change the language in just one or two apps (like Instagram) but keep your phone in your native language. 👍👍

This is soooooooo encouraging for me as I’m currently in the midst of learning a new language. I’m on the verge of tears at how much this helped my confidence and for me to keep on pushing forward.
I've been learning french for three years and am almost fluent. A few tips always practice the language right before you go to sleep it helps with memorization and two never skip a lesson you will forget a lot. Repetition is key.
Is there a specific course you followed?
@@GoToMan If you have access to it, use the Canadian curriculum for french ( Grades 6-8 is most useful) because we are a bilingual country, but we mostly speak English. France's curriculum is too hard!😂

All Im using for learning Korean is UA-cam and Duolingo, I only use duolingo to get used to the characters and the sounds but I use youtube for vocabulary. I also recommend that you label your room with Korean words, For example, Labeling your door as door in Korean, Thats very helpful to memorize the vocabulary.

As a Korean who is trying to learn German and French, I can see how much effort you put on Korean.
The methods you tried are actually what I consider the best methods( trying talking with native speakers, changing the phones language etc) . I'd suggest watching Korean dramas too! It would help you get used to the sound of Korean and even help you catch some word or phrases( personally I recommend watching without the subtitles)

As a German who is trying to learn Spanish and wants to try to learn Korean I totally agree. I almost picked up all of my English by watching TV shows or UA-cam videos in english. What I think is important , if you can't talk to a native speaker, is that you try to get away from not being sure how the language actually sounds by hearing a native speaker speak. Even though speaking to a native improves your communication skills even more, doing something is better than doing nothing.
I'm German and I started to learn Korean a few weeks ago. I watch a lot of kdramas. Hopefully one day I can watch them without subtitles 😂

I also learn Korean (by myself) with my friends' help. I think watching K-dramas and a lot of variety shows can really help you study new words, slangs, and pronunciation. Now I can speak Korean and also write hangul, also sometimes I am able to watch variety or dramas without subtitle (not the whole sentence). I hope this helps you improving your skills! I think your Korean is already great, especially when you study for only 2 months.

I've been trying to learn Korean for around 7 years, got to about Inga's level in 5 years. So any tips on how to speed up the process? I try to practice 30 minutes a day.
Find a video series/grammar book and learn 1-3 lessons daily- Whatever you can do and review those grammar structures. Find podcasts for natives or kdramas/ other media for natives to watch and listen to, turn on Korean subtitles and off English if you can do you avoid reading English instead of listening to Korean.
Immerse yourself, practice writing, and use a dictionary app on your phone to search up new words. Learn verb conjugations and more, maybe use TOPIK exams prep or practice courses. Find other vids of people and how they learned to find your path, good luck!!
Learn through translating and understanding as well as singing songs!
If you don't mind how long it takes, but really want to get to a high level, this is my advice: Try to find a book (series), website or app that teaches everything (from a beginner to an advanced level) that you like and stick with it. (If it's a book, make sure it has audio). With every new lesson, you'll know that you're improving. Regularly revise the words that you learn through it (perhaps through memrise, I recommend using English as the word that is already given so that you have to write the Korean word). Say the Korean word out loud when you revise it. For books, book series of a Korean university would probably be good. For example Yonsei (can be quite academic), Sogang (focuses more on speaking) or Ewha (I feel like this one is somewhere between Yonsei and Sogang when it comes to the reading-speaking ratio). And while studying, keep watching some Korean programs, in the beginning preferably those about daily life stuff.
1. Fluently learn the Korean alphabet first and all the basic pronunciations before reading sentences or doing any other stuff, like:
ㄱㄴㄷㄹㅁㅂㅅㅇㅈㅊㅋㅌㅍㅎ etc.
2. Listen to Korean podcasts or talk shows with English subs
I think its better to actually have a korean teacher, i just recently got one from this language app called Preply it has many language teachers on it however you do have to pay. My teacher costs $20 an hour so I just schedule 1 hr twice a week and I've already gotten alot better. But the best way to get better is to make friends with someone who speaks Korean cause alot of the time koreans don't say the things that are in textbooks. it helps you learn the slang and pronunciation. Also watching reality TV or korean UA-camrs also help with learning new vocabulary, pronunciation and listening skills

As a native Korean speaker, I find it fascinating when non native people try to learn the language. I think that Inga did incredibly well and I'm very impressed at her progress in only 2 months.
Inga’s approach is similar to mine: duolingo, get textbooks, change phone language to korean.
Differences: I cant afford to take actual lessons yet :’) hoping someday I’ll get there.

Yaaaay I'm so happy for you!!! Learning a new language is one of the hardest things to do, but it's also one of the most rewarding. Tip: Watch a lot of kdramas. I've picked up little phrases and can understand some sentences and I haven't even properly started learning Korean yet! Which kind of makes sense because I'm an audible and visual learner so it's probable why I've picked it up so quickly.

I started to learn korean in july 31 of 2020 I know I have a long way to go. For those who are wanting or learning korean I'm going to tell you to keep going and dont let anyone let your self down! Keep going!!
Here are some off the tips that worked for me (it’s been 30 days I stared pertaining and I can say a few sentences in Korean 😬)
1. learn Hangul be perfect with Hangul
2.pronounce everything you are learning ex: 감사 합니디 (it means thank u in Korean ) gamsahamida = gam-sa-hamida and try making a sentence with the word so you know how to use the word in sentences while speaking to someone in Korean
3.for easier writing and pronunciation separate the words like ex: ㄱ+ㅏ+ㅁ+ㅅ+ㅏ+ㅎ+ㅏ+ㅂ+ㄴ+ㅣ+ㄷ+ㅣ=감사 합니디 .
4.practice vocabulary in a book 📖,flowers in Korean ,names in Korean ,places in Korean , and many more and read them out loud and write
5.out a test for yourself every 2 weeks to see how much you have learned
6.never give up on your self 💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜
I’ve been juggling french, japanese and korean and honestly i learnt most korean from watching kpop content 😂 Also french for me is manageable since I’ve been learning it from a young age. Japanese on the other hand is really confusing for me...I’ve memorised the hiragana and katakana and i am learning new kanji everyday. I’m also thinking about picking up sign language. And i also want to add that I have true respect for those who are multilangual. 💕

I am learning Korean to become fluent in a culture I enjoy. It is a rough start when you speak English because your not used to moving your mouth they way Koreans do to form words. I am almost proficient in Hangul and take every small step as a success! I wish everyone luck that are broadening their horizons and accepting challenges!

Oh my goodness haha. THIS is the video I needed to see, and where I personally hope to be as well in 60 days. I empathized with everything--the struggle, the "mental blocks" and finding the needed dedication to keep going. I felt just as rewarded when I saw you make those breakthroughs in weeks 5-7!

I've been learning German and Korean off and on for a few years now. Consistency is so important. I really struggle and feel like vocabulary slips from my brain easily when I take long breaks. I'm back to taking regular lessons on italki and have a few apps to practice (Babbel and LingoDeer) with when I'm just sitting around away from home. At times all the media I consume will be in my target languages but during this time with covid I've taken steps back from that so I'm less overwhelmed. Goodluck to everyone kn their language learning journeys!

I recommend the korean pronuciation lite app because it shows you the sound and the way the tongue is supposed to move

i’m only 6 days in learning Korean, and i know so much! it’s super fun and easy! i hope to be fluent in 1-3 months
During my time at home, I have also been trying my hand at Korean. It began because my daughter is really into K-pop, hip-hop and R&B. We also watch a lot of the buzzfeed coverage of Korean artists. Since we are together day in and out, I’ve found myself liking the music and falling madly in love with K-dramas.
I started by wanting to be able to understand the shows and zone out to the music if I wanted to, but now I too have fallen in love with the culture and want to move there and explore the culture with my children. I know I have a ways to go, but I’m picking up on things. Hopefully I’ll be able to acquire a tutor/teacher as well once I move to Seattle.
I really enjoyed your video and you’ve given me great hope.
