It was quite prophetic in so many ways! I was a big fan and watched it starting in the first season when I discovered it on the first TV we ever owned after we got married. Those were interesting times, too.

Strangely enough something brought that episode to mind just a few days ago. I was speaking about it to a friendin referemce to something Trump had said or done.
I can almost always tell right away if I'm going to get along with someone if I find out they are Trek Fans (or as in the case of Alex Ferguson - NOT).
I cannot see Trump even attempt to punish Russia - it's like cutting off the branch you're sitting on.
I think it's more like Looney Tunes, where the branch he cuts off stays put and the rest of the tree falls.

I totally remember that episode of Star Trek. It was very freaky. But I hadn't put it together with what has been going on here until now. Thank you, Keith, for stating what we should all be aware of by now. It will always mystify me that his followers are so brainwashed, they march in lockstep behind him in spite of everything he's done that is so damaging to our country, to the presidency, and to the world. Let's hope enough of them come to their senses before it's too late. We cannot tolerate having Putin's KGBFF in the White House, for God's sake!
It's one of the best episodes of Star Trek TOS and a must-watch for everyone. It's one of the few episodes of TOS that isn't stupidly campy and has a very important message that's relevant even today.
Lost What, you don't like the Gangs of Chicago episode?
I suppose, Lost, some of those episodes seem pretty campy today, but at the time, we loved them and took them very seriously. Sometimes, friends who had one of the few color TVs anyone had back then would invite us over and we'd all gather close around their tiny screen and watch IN COLOR! Very exciting! Then we'd talk about the episode and its implications for society.

CS Lew, I never watch Fixed News, though I have seen clips, of course, and it's as you say, propaganda people sit and watch all day sometimes. Go figure. My own mother did that almost till the few days before she died. Every time I went to visit her, I turned it off. She would even complain about how the women all looked so uncomfortable with their short skirts and crossed legs, but she still watched even though I told her their audience was dirty old men, including the Dirty-Old-Man-in-Chief. She insisted she watched MSNBC "sometimes," but I only saw her do that once. Oh well, if there is an afterlife, I trust she's learning a few truths by now. Like, as Joe Scarborough said years ago, "Conservatism is a racket."

I'm pretty sure I lived in the same country he's lived in. There was no impending nuclear war where I live though. I remember the Cuban Missile Crisis and when that was over things got back to normal and cartoons were on once again. "A Taste of Armageddon", has also stayed with me since childhood and is even more relevant now because the lambs marched to slaughter with the delusion of serving their leaders and not their people. War is not neat and tighty, it's bloody and horrific. It cost the lives of those who believe they are protecting their people and others who need protecting. Professor Asha Rangappa's graphic analogy is haunting and as true as the fact that Trump is now our Nero.
In the Republican mind the difference between "right and wrong" amounts to "if it helps a GOP politician or the party in general it is "right" or "good". Conversely, if it hurts it's "wrong" or "bad". Example. When a republican candidate kills his opponent that's "right/good". If someone tells on him that's "wrong/bad".
I remember that Star Trek episode and knew it the moment you mentioned the computer war game. It also haunts me.

It's not just Hillary. As you note, she actually won the popular vote. But the electoral college doesn't explain why Republicans control _all three_ branches of our federal government, _plus_ most states. What does explain it is idiots who didn't vote at all.
We're in this mess because more than 90 million Americans couldn't even be bothered to _vote._ And another 7 million or so threw away their vote on idiotic third-parties (in a two-party system!) with zero chance of winning.
That was partly gullibility (believing not just Republican lies, but also Vladimir Putin's army of paid internet trolls) and partly laziness and apathy (especially among liberals who are notoriously unreliable voters).
Well, that's the problem with a democracy. We get the kind of government we (collectively) deserve.

I too remember that Star Track episode, & I likewise have never forgotten it. My impression was primarily about how easily politicians can justify something as heinous as the premise of that show. "It preserves our cultures, our civilizations..." is something I can very well imagine certain Republicans saying even today.
What it wouldn't preserve is our freedoms: to live & respond to life as we choose. Just as these cyber attacks remove those freedoms & our choices. The fact that our real-life politicians choose party squabbles over protecting us all is as shameful as the choices those fictional politicians made.
