I just want to say, I love Japan, its people and the culture. This video is not meant to dissuade people from visiting Japan. Rabbit island is only a tiny portion of Japan. Secondly, the island is a PUBLIC island, and entry is free. The only fare you have to pay for is the ferry ride. Therefore, no one is really profiting from the island, except probably the hotel on the island. Finally, I have also read and seen photos of wild boars on the island (another predatory animal) that may account for some of the injuries. I personally did not witness any boars, but if there are boars, that's even more reason to feel saddened and scared for the bunnies. I found also found another similar video about the sick rabbits on the island here: ua-cam.com/video/tOgrmtTcUlQ/v-deo.html
Honestly, if it were up to me there would be no rabbit island at all, but I'm not sure how realistic that is. So this video poses the question, what do we do?

In my head if I could I would build a VERY big fence make a circle of it plant grass let it grow. When the grass is really tall I would do the same thing over and over. For the water I dont know. If only I could do that and help all these rabbits.

Judging from the storefront you showed in the video, I would say the store owners, the makers of the items in the store, the store employees, the ferry boat service, all its employees; you say there’s a hotel there? That’s a bit of money, all the taxes that go to whatever province they are in... there’s quite a bit of money flowing. That’s how Vegas does it- come for the free entertainment or $5 barfet and get nickle-n-dimed. How much money did you put into their economy just to make that video? Come to think of it, if you’re getting money from UA-cam by airing this video, even you are gaining profit from the island and we are all paying in.
This is not a bad thing. This is how we were taught in America. Japan is a capitalist society as well. This is a lovely and timely video to demonstrate the level of responsibility we ALL take in what we experience and partake in. I do not pass judgement here as to anyone’s level of engagement. I would just like to create awareness that we are all engaging.
If you are (one is) outraged, be outraged. If you are (one is) nonplussed, then move along.
Understanding the whole situation is important.

It will only make the problem worse. Giving more food will cause more babies. Prey animals need to be thinned out by predators. There needs to be a balance. Predators eat the weak and sick. Crows are not adequate predators. They need to bring in people to capture the sick and over populated - donating them to zoos or shelters for carnivore food.

Grace Jackson I mean did people really think “rabbit island” was going to be all sunshine and rainbows? There’s over a thousand rabbits on that small island. They have to compete for food and water. The only vitamins and nourishment there getting is from the people who visit there with small bags probably containing cabbage and carrots which actually... aren’t a big part in a rabbits diet and there is many misconceptions about rabbits eating carrots when in reality carrots are about as helpful to a rabbit as a human eating grass. rabbits NEED hay in fact a rabbits Diet is 80% hay and only 5% greens and I see no rabbit here eating the right stuff. so yes the rabbits are basically killing each other for food and are extremely malnourished. And i can’t imagine what would happen if myxomatosis was to spread there... actually the rabbits would be better off dead rather than living in those conditions.

  • @lilzombie6417

Well the reason they're so emaciated is because there is not a balance of natural food to rabbits and predators to rabbits. They swarm to get food instead of searching for what morsel they can find. A natural way to deal with this problem would be to introduce more native predators to the island. Right now the rabbit population is to big compared to food plant population hence starving rabbits.

honestly, one of the big problems plaguing the rabbits (aside from genetic issues and the sicknesses) is a lack of balance. there are no predators on the island, so the rabbits multiply too much, sicknesses spread due to crowding, and they have not enough food, water, etc. they eat all the plants and starve, while fighting each other for the remaining vegetation. and of course, they are domesticated rabbits as well, which probably doesn't help. I think the best solution would be for rescuers to come and get as many rabbits adopted out until there aren't any more, or to introduce some natural predators and many, many plants and seeds to the island to help re-establish a balance. (I know it sounds mean, but the rabbits would be better off with a few getting eaten now and again than hundreds suffering over weeks and months slowly dying.) thanks for sharing the sad truth.

Typically, rabbits (and other "prey" animals) control their own populations by having fewer or smaller litters when there is not enough food and/or water. Reducing food and or water is inhumane. So are predators. Spaying and/or neutering some, but not all, of the rabbits is a more humane way to keep the population constant. Building a greenhouse and clinic on Rabbit Island would be ideal. The greenhouse could provide fresh food for the rabbits and a clinic could take care of their medical needs. Profits from tourism could support this.

It's not because they're starving, it's because they now associate people with food. Just like bears do in the wild. People keep going there and like her, keep feeding them. That's why in the states there are signs to not feed bears and that's for this very reason. They become reliant on humans and when they see them they go to them. If people would stop going and feeding them they'd go back to normal. The island isn't barren of vegetation.

Appalling!

Armani Nguon I mean did people really think “rabbit island” was going to be all sunshine and rainbows?

They need a go fund page or a site directly linking the island. The donations can go toward medical care and getting them fixed as well as food and water. I wonder if they are lacking in care on purpose. To slowly get rid of them.

Unfortunately, it's salt water (pretty sure). I was going to watch this video, as I LOVED some of the other videos about Okunoshima that I saw, but after reading the comments, I don't think I want to put myself through it. I love the wild rabbits in my yard. Over the past several months, I've become great friends with them. Now I can hand feed them, pet them, and lie down with them. I had the unforgettable experience of seeing my Jaxie breastfeed her babies right in front of me! I sat in tears and watched speechlessly (and motionlessly). It was awesome.

SOLUTION:. ....not, but it would help with the malnourishment.....could you get some people together to plant more edible things for the rabbits on the island? Lots of clover, alfalfa, roses, purslane, chickweed, dandelions, wild lettuces, chia, wheat grass, coriander, basil, oregano, mint there is so so much that can grow like weeds for so so cheap. You can also set up special decorative fountains they could safely drink out of
To all those who insist that the bunnies would eat it all.... It grows back, how do you think rabbits survive in the wild? They eat vegetation. I'm not saying a few plants here and there, I'm talking a massive growing project. And someone said some are invasive plants and they'd be overrun with dandelions. Well you can't have both arguments be right, either there's too much food or not enough, some people can never be happy. Here's an idea: let's just sit at our computers and argue about it and do what we all know we're going to: NOTHING!!!!!
Why do I even try???? I told you guys it wasn't a perfect solution, but should we not at least try to help?!?!? Guess not. Hey instead I just bashing the idea all together, why don't you neighsayers just give me a solution that will work? Or click off the comment.
And which is worse, being "overrun" with dandelions and clover, or sick rabbits?

I am Japanese. I am translating because I am not good at English. I'm sorry if there are typographical errors.
You may be thinking that you are right and acting
If you really think about the rabbit's happiness you should think more deeply about why it happened
There is also a problem with the food and places she gave.
These are notes written in Japanese.
Please check the person who goes particularly.
Do not give processed foods that are not for rabbits. Never let the rabbit eat drinks such as rice, bread, sweets, snack foods and juices other than water
In the case of vegetables, cabbage, carrots, komatsuna, daikon radish leaves, and bok choy are fine, but otherwise, vegetables, rhizomes (such as potato) and leeks should never be given. Also, please avoid the vegetables from which the lye comes out. (Spinach, radish, fruits, etc.)
As you are walking around the island, rabbits will eat food everywhere, so when you gather rabbits there will be
It is not uncommon to give support.
However, care must also be taken in the places where food is placed (given). For example, if you feed in a place where there is no place to escape and hide, and there is no tree on the top and the sky looks wide, crows and tonbies will come and eat rabbits immediately after people leave. It may attack. Although crows sometimes eat rabbit food (pellets), they learn that rabbits gather there when pellets are present.
It is recommended that food should be given under the shade of trees or under shrubs, or where there are plants or trees that are overgrown or structures that can escape nearby.
Please do not feed on the road just because the car does not come. Especially in summer, asphalt is heated, so on the road of the sun is a difficult place for the rabbits. In addition, rabbits can become "heatstroke" as well as humans, so please guide them to the shade before giving them up.
You will notice when you feed the rabbits, but among the rabbits eating food, I think that only one rabbit is expelled from the surrounding rabbits and you may see the rabbits that are not available . It is a natural thing because it is a world of wild rabbits that “do not eat food for the weak”, but if it can do it, it can induce only one of them and feed it to a little distant place, or directly to that one from the hand Please give me some food.
In addition, please do not put food in one place and ask you to go in a wide area. If you put them in one place, the rabbits will start fighting for food, and you will only be able to eat strong rabbits as described above.
Containers in various places in the island are containers for drinking water that is important for rabbits. Do not put food or vegetables in the container. There is no feeding for wild rabbits on the island. If it contains food etc., it will rain and the water will get dirty immediately even if it collects in the container. The rabbits can not eat the food that has been dissolved in the water, and even if the water accumulates, it becomes unwaterable.
Also, please don't let the rabbits leave an uneaten amount of food on the spot and leave. If the food is left over, crows and boars will approach the food and sacrifice the rabbits.
For notes of caution on visit the rabbit-island, click here.

Why are you saying she gave the wrong food and acting like she did this?! She just went there and gave leafy greens. I appreciate you spreading true care of rabbits but maybe it's a bad translation because it seems like you are blaming the girl in the video.
Anyway, the point of this video is that the rabbits on this island are NOT getting this treatment. We know what they need, but how to do it is the real issue.

    • @bixbu9844
      @bixbu9844 5 років тому +3

@@JamieNotLamie I am not criticizing what she did.
The only thing I want to convey is the food and places she gave.
She can not read Japanese. And I bought some vegetables I didn't know. Even if it is fresh, I think it is dangerous to put your hands off easily, as some rabbits have some negative effects on vegetables. (If she has knowledge of vegetables or can read Japanese, I think that's fine.)
I think the actions such as treatment are also important. However, I also think that the issue of why that happens is important.
(I think there are multiple causes, but this place wasn't as bad as it used to be, and I think the number of rabbits has increased with the increase of tourists and these problems are getting worse.)
I want you to interact with the correct knowledge so that the damage does not spread any more
Are the actions we are doing right now really right? Including the part that says
I think that we should protect with the correct knowledge, not with the wrong knowledge.

First of all, I've been meaning to thank you for almost a year now. I got my Binky for the same reasons as you did with Lennon, I was living in a flat were pets weren't allowed but really missed having one and chose a quiet one. But I also wanted to look after him properly, and watched tons of videos and among all, your channel is the one that helped me the most. I have created a wonderful bond with my bunny, and I have to really thank you for it. I saw this video on your list but kinda chose to avoid it for a long time. I love Japan and studied Japanese at university, with the intention on moving there to teach English one day. But life happened and instead, I am now living in Italy and teaching here. I finally found the courage to watch this video now, because people keep telling me to visit Bunny Island as I'm finally planning my first trip there, to visit my long-time Japanese pen-friend...and I'm now in tears. You were right: it's definitely not a video for the faint of heart, but I still really appreciate you sharing the truth about it and tell the world. We need to know. And I'll be sharing this video with my Japanese friends, hoping they might be able to sign a petition to help these poor rabbits. Thank you. From the bottom of Binky and I's heart for the amazing job you've been doing in teaching how to look after and make these amazing wonderful creatures happy and get the love that they rightfully deserve

I've been to this island, I think it's important to note that because of all the poisonous gas testing, it's very hard for greenery (specifically edible greenery for rabbits) to grow on Okunojima. On top of that, greenery that does grow is pretty 50/50 on whether it's even safe to eat! I think a better plan would either be to create a symbiotic ecosystem for the rabbits, or make the entire thing into a type of conservation.
But Japan just legalized whale hunting and they're just now dealing with the cat problem. I don't have high hopes.

Hello Lorelei I stayed in Bunny a Island for a few days with my wife, she cried everyday because she felt helpless and for those few days she protected the sick and stayed with them to discourage other bunnies healthier to go eat the veggies we brought. I have to nuance what you saw though. There is some volunteers that comes and clean the water, even give documentations to tourist about how to take care of rabbits and what you can feed them. There is also some hay racks. (This was in june 2018). There is also water stations where you can change the water for the bunnies. In this video it looks like the volunteer (it was not an organisation thought it was just an old lady and some friends) did not for a few days.
Also there is a small mountain and the bunnies there are way healthier and they don't fight. We have also seen cute families near the beach. The sick bunnies are around the hotel and the port, mostly, where there is more competition for food. I recommend staying at night in the hotel because the nightime and early morning are a hell of a binky party ! :) so yeah. It was not as good as we've seen on the internet but it is not as dark as this video shows too.

By the time Rabbit Island was discovered, it was too densely populated to neuter/spay all the rabbits. If they miss one rabbit, the population explodes. Rabbits are also not as popular of a pet in Japan. They are eaten as food though.
It’s a bad situation, but at least animal control hasn’t killed all these rabbits.
