1976 - I remember it well. Most of my classmates at my boys school were into Heavy Rock albums. Although I never saw him myself, a few of them talked about needing to watch out for Peter Wyngarde (a local resident) in the Gents toilets in town. So, be careful who you rush to associate yourself with, Rick! The Mainline catalogue was a very welcome answer to many years of prayers since the demise of Hornby Dublo and Trix. Whatever you think of the quality of the Hornby products of the mid 1970s, you can see they devoted far more time to producing a swish catalogue every year than they ever did to upgrading and expanding their product range.
Hi, I have one of the track cleaning cars in red, another ex-Transcontinental model. The pad does not roll through the body as you suggested as it is fixed in place at either end of the body.
My dad would buy me the Hornby catalogue every year, and I recall this one and those very vibrant, glossy pages well. I wanted at least one item off each page! My dad and I tried the chicken wire & papier mache approach to scenery building, with reasonable success. The layout shown on the "Magic of Minature Realism" pages was Nirvana for me. I turned 11 in Sept 1976, and during the summer, my parents took us to Margate for our summer holiday in the baking hot summer. Whilst there, my dad took me to The Oval to watch my first day of test cricket (Eng v WI). Happy memories that you have helped re-kindle.
Hi Guys another great vid, despite the music. However there were some great albums in 76. Frampton comes alive, Hotel California. The song remains the same to name a few. Also Peter Wyngaurd lived in Pontypool. He lived on the mountain in front of us. He sold it to Una Stubbs and she sold it to Ronald Lacey, me him a few times. Keep these vids coming guys. All the best. Carl.
Nice trip down Memory Lane again. The models may not have been all that but every brand had a truly comprehensive line of accessories that would make people drool when looking into the shop window 😄
Nice video. Great to see the old catalogues. The Flieschmann design ringfield was a superb motor, the main casting for it got damaged beyond economic repair, & so they came up with the new design which just wasnt as good. Mailnline & Airfix revolutionised model railways, all what you see with Bachmann now can be traced right back to Mainline & the use of far east tooling technology to produce finer looking components & mouldings. It just got better every year with Mainline, by the time of the Warship / 03 / class 56 & the mk1 rbr restaurant car , they where leaving Hornby & Lima standing. , the mk1 rbr is still one the best looking mk1's ever made. Hornby just never had the money to compete / alter their ways to compete. Such a shame Palitoy went bust, the exchange rate of the pound caused their collapse, they made action man as well.
1976 punk was the alternative music scene (big fan here), to be there and not to forget, and the foundation for a big chance in the music scene towards the 80'. It was also an expression of a great depression of the working scene, coal mines were closed and the up come of cheaper and better products started to come over from Asia. And the Mainline catalog is a very good example of this, followed by Airfix. Same can be sad for cars, a European build car was expensive had no or little comfort and weren't always reliable, while the first Japanese ones came with a luxurious comfort, cheap and reliable. The Honda Civic first Asian car that became car of the Year mid 70's in the western world And in my opinion for a new brand like Mainline that just started up, they were way ahead of Hornby and set the foundation for todays detailed model trains, even the look of the catalog looks much better. And coming back to Honda, I still remember Detroit autoworker smashing up a brand new Honda on TV with sledge hammers out of protest. On the downside it was also the downfall of UK, European and western production in general, and the movement of industrie to Asia, for cheaper labor. Something we even can't compete with today…
Hi Danny, interesting points you raised and the Hong Kong manufacturing cannot be underestimated in impact Mainline and Airfix made on the model scene. The models really were a miniature reflection of a changing world. All the best Rick
How dare you poopoo the WURZELS well chuffed Railways!!!!!!! Lol 😂 There my favourite folk music band of all time!!!!!!!! Like myself I'm from the West Country and I always say, that everything from the West Country is the best okay!!!!!!! Lol 😂 All the best from DEVON Mike 😜 Ps. But because I'm a big fan of your channel I'll forgive you this time okay 😂😂
1976 there was a lot of good music around Peter frampton (show me the way ) got eg also on the tv emergency squad 51 I got the full box set and a multi region dvd now to watch them superb,I was 9 then boiling hot summer and no doom and gloom about global warming we just enjoyed it and that Christmas got my Met blue Raleigh grifter I called her zero x after the space plane in thunderbirds are go ,and I got an airfix train set for my birthday and dad was amazed the better detail and my nan and grandad gave me a jouef train set it had every thing level crossing ,cars etc it was an SNCF one All the best Mark
Hi Mark, I've got Framton Comes Alive on vinyl somewhere! It's actually a good album but there was so much crap in the singles chart! I had a grifter but in 76 I was riding a drop bar racer. All the best Rick
Well, thank you for the reminder on just how bad popular music was in 1976... steering me into the bubbling punk music coming out at the time. Anyhow... very cool to go through the old catalogs, especially a "first model year" from Mainline!
It was mentioned in the 76 but got edited out as it was released in 75. Despite being the third best selling single in UK chart history (including the 1991 release) it failed to reach the top 20 year end charts in 75 and 76. This is because it was released late in 75 so it's sales were split over the two years. Great song but my favourite Queen song is Innuendo. Thanks for watching and all the best Rick
Hi Clive, sorry about the music it sounded a lot quieter when I was doing the editing. Don't worry I will leave it off the next vlog. All the best Rick
Oh, come on! 1976 albums Eagles Hotel California, Stevie Wonder Songs in the Key of Life, Jailbreak Thin Lizzy, Hejira Joni Mitchell, Queen Day at the Races. That's all I can remember but it was a pretty good year musically if you didn't just listen to the pop radio channels. Wait! AC/DC Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap. Anyway, back to trains... Thanks for a fun look through the old catalogs. Cheers! Oh and if you didn't like at least one of the albums I mentioned, I'm unsubscribing!🤣
Hejira is one of my favourite albums! I could mention a few others but we focused on the best sellers of 76 which were bloody awful lol. Thanks for watching and continuing to subscribe. 😀😀
Yup I agree it's awful, in the editing it was a lot quieter. I won't be putting any more music on vlogs. (And here's me moaning about the awful music of 76) All the best Rick
Always interesting to see the old catalogues Rick, thanks for doing these videos.
Thanks for watching Andrew
Excellent video as always.
Thanks Nick

Hmm just googled and there was an incident in the men's, thanks for the warning! Cheers for watching and all the best Rick
I wasn't born until 1980 but so nice to look back at what was available in that time period. Keep the great videos coming.
Thanks very much Deano
I had (and still have) that clockwork set from Hornby. Got me into trains as a kid.
Hi Chris, you don't see many of those these days. All the best Rick

Thanks for the info Andrew

Thanks for sharing your memories Stephen, I too had a chicken wire hill on my layout which I remember being pretty good. All the best Rick
@wellchuffedmodelrailways PS: understood the Peter Wingard ref too!

Nice trip down Memory Lane again.

Hi Ed, they really sold the model railways dream to the youngsters back then. All the best Rick

Yes great models for their time and still look very good today unlike some of their contemporaries models. All the best Rick
Wozza, that was nearly 50 years ago! Time flies……
Shhhh 😂😂
Pick up goods set is where it all started for me
Those sets must have been Hornby's bread and butter. All the best Rick
Always educational , great video .music could be a bit lower
Thanks Daryl, not sure what happened with the music it was a lot lower in editing. Thanks for watching Rick

Ha ha I had the Wurzels records as a kid! Reminds me I could do with a glass of cider later! All the best Rick
Lynn Benfield did a great job of those scary words... Have no fear little one, I am here to protect thee. 1976, the year that killed off prog rock.
In 1976, I saw ELO at the Birmingham NEC. I was there shouting with everyone else “Come back on, ELO, and carry on playing!”
@@wellchuffedrailways That's excellent.😁

I remember the heatwave in the summer & peeling skin like an onion lol.

Cheers Anthony, glad to see the punk spirit is alive and well. Rick
For both 1975 and '76, you seem to have missed out one of the biggest hits in UK chart history. Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen.
It was mentioned in the 76 but got edited out as it was released in 75. Are you going to get a Hornby Class 28, actually looks quite a good looking model.
Do you mean the class 29? Then yes I do want one but preferably the slightly later one with a full paint finish. Cheers
It’s the Hornby Dublo Metro Vickers Co-bo
Yes I would like one of those as well. There is a TT scale one running in our forthcoming Chapel show video
Great dinner and a great video to watch after didn't like 1976to hot for me back ground music a bit loud sorry 👍thank you for sharing
Hi Clive, sorry about the music it sounded a lot quieter when I was doing the editing. Don't worry I will leave it off the next vlog. All the best Rick
The best thing introduced that year was.........me!
The music that year was appalling, good thing punk came along 😁
one who agree with me that Punk was the biggest innovation in music at that time😂👍
Completely agree with you Sophia!
Mainline for the time where extremely well detailed models compared to Hornby. I had several class 45’s in Mainline and Replica.
Hi Nick, they definitely moved the game along especially with the wagons. Cheers Rick

Oh rick / pauline love you both and all your vids but the music to this is a no for me sorry .
Yup I agree it's awful, in the editing it was a lot quieter. I won't be putting any more music on vlogs. (And here's me moaning about the awful music of 76) All the best Rick
Sorry but music while you are talking is spoiling it for me
On watching on UA-cam it's a lot louder than it was in the editing so I will make sure it's better for the next one. All the best Rick
Hey mate, WW War 111 WILL SPOIL IT A LOT MORE ,GET OUT OF YOUR MEN "O" LADY CAVES BEFORE IT'S TOO LATE!
You do not need that music, it’s a turn off.
Hi Peter, no more music in our videos. 😀
