Car insurance agent here! This is a great tip for staying in a hotel, which is where most of my customers are when their car gets stolen overnight!!! One customer thought parking outside of his room window was enough to keep his car safe but it probably only helped their equipment more by being close to the fob!
Excellent video. Yes. a "convenience" feature does have a security issue. In a high risk county/country - it is good to know that there is this option. Also recommend the (silent) Apple AirTag to be hidden in the car upholstery somewhere. Thank you for the great advice!
This is not the only way thieves can steal your car these days. Sometimes they don't need to scan for your key , all they do is find an entry point into the can bus system that is quick , usually through the headlight as with the lexus , on range rovers its usually at the rear hatch where ive seen them actually cut a bit of the metal out to gain access . Once they have access to the wiring to the headlight they now have full access to your car and can just open the doors and start the car. Putting your key in a box or turning off the comfort access will not stop your car from being stolen. What you need is an aftermarket immobiliser that protects the can bus system and will not allow the car to start or it can also lock the gearbox so that as soon as a gear is selected it will cut out the engine . You are required to enter a pin code everytime you get in your car that only you know , it can contain quite a lot of buttons that are situated in your car , your steering wheel buttons, your window buttons, stereo buttons etc etc. dont know about the US or canada but here in UK one such immobiliser is a ghost 2 , very small and discreet it is hidden amongst your wiring systems anywhere in the car and doesn't emit any signal so cannot be scanned for its location. If fitted correctly by an approved installer it is almost impossible to find and disarm. Thieves dont have hours to look for such a thing . If you've got your pride and joy sat outside at night get something like this as well as all the other measures listed in the video. Its a small price to pay for piece of mind . Paying $50,000 plus for a car and not securing it for a small amount of cash is stupid in my opinion.
Also wrap your extra key FOB in aluminum foil three to four layer of foil when not in use. The foil will distrupt the key FOB's signal. You can test it out by wrapping your key FOB with aluminum foil and stand next to your car. NOTHING works! That's how you prevent thieves from reading your key FOB's signal.
Actually, there is a much easier way. The manual will tell you how to disable the signal to save on FOB battery. For example, on my Lexus remote if you hold the lock key and press the unlock key twice in a row, you get the FOB light blinking 4 times to confirm that wireless signal is disabled. It will be reenabled once you hit any key on the FOB afterwards.
They sell Faraday bags for car fob/keys that solve this problem more elegantly than wrapping in aluminum foil - but the principle is the same - blocks the wireless signal.

If you want to leave the passive system on but stop people from stealing the signal from your wireless remote, you can put it in battery depletion mode. This will turn the remote off. It was intended to save the remote's battery but it also prevents it from sending out a signal. No need for a faraday box or wrapping your key in tin foil. To take it out of battery depletion mode, just press any button on the remote. That said, your way is better because you don't have to remember to turn the remote off. Personally, I like the passive system. My dealer put in a third party engine disabler. Works great on the new style remote (from 2019) Darrel but unfortunately there is no such feature on the older model remotes - Good info - Thanks - Cheers from Canada!
Oh my goodness! I’m so scared now! I bought the special cover and box from Amazon to block the signal, but I bought my car used, and the dealership said it only came with one key fob. I’m not comfortable with that! What should I do to protect someone stealing my car? 🙏🏻
The easy way to do that at the Lexus I have ES 350 2015 to this engage that relay remote is on your key press and hold the lock botton then press twice the unlock botton it will light 4 times then the key won't function the way it was before just press unlock to open the door and it will go back to the original setting. Just before you leave the car do it again.
On a 2016 IS300h to stop the key fob receiving radio signals(used for relay attack) simply hold the lock button down and press the unlock button twice. The red light on the fob will flash 4 times and it's done. As soon as you use the button on the key fob to unlock it the next time it reverts to keyless entry. Btw a Lexus dealer told me the key has to be within 7 metres of the car for the relay to work.
Thanks for the tip. I have the same Rx. However, the main thing about push start cars I like is the fact you don’t need pull your key out of your pocket. So that stinks. But the metal around your key sounds like a good idea.
THANKS , ALTHOUGH I DON'T HAVE A NEWER VEHICLE, THIS WAS VERY INTERESTING AND YOU MADE A GOOD VIDEO THAT WILL HELP MANY THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE . GREAT JOB AND BEST OF ALL, NO BLARING MUSIC IN THE BACK GROUND . I HAD ALWAYS THOUGHT OF BUYING A LEXUS AS THEY LOOK LIKE NICE CARS .
If you don't have that setting in your customizable settings, (my 2014 ES does not), there is an alternate method. Instead of stopping the car from looking for the FOB, stop the FOB from listening for the car. You do that by holding the lock button on the FOB and at the same time, press the UNLOCK button twice. The red light on the FOB should blink four times in slow spacing and the FOB is now turned OFF. Touching any button on the FOB will then turn it back on. Make sure you also have the second FOB (your partner's or spare) also turned OFF. This has the added advantage of saving the battery in the FOB. I use this system in public parking lots, airports, hotels, etc. (I also keep the spare FOB in a steel desk drawer).
@@carquestions Here’s the weird thing…according to the manual, (p. 868), if you have Navigation, you are supposed to be able to access the smart key option as you show…the reality is, you can’t!…it does not come up in the menu options on the screen. The next time I have my ODB2 connected (with Carista app), I’ll have to see if the option is available but I suspect not. Anyone with a 2014 ES with Nav have any experience with Techstream or the dealer being able to turn OFF the smart key feature?
@David Kirkham Maybe Toyota had it backward with me. They stated that even with the battery pulled, they can still locate the car with SOS Connect. Thieves suck. I got lucky I got my Lincoln back after two weeks. I had to gate, fence, and garage my cars. Installed ADT and cameras. It's a crappy feeling. Hopefully, you had really great insurance on the theft.
Cheap insurance... intercept power for the fuel pump... usually running under carpetted sill... and cut in a toggle switch.. place the switch out of sight... 10 bucks in parts ....most alarm or mechanics csn do it for you at a cost of labor time... usually under an hour.... good video
Hi, this is a great tip. I had 2 dreams in the last half year, that my car was stolen ( Lexus Ct200H ) and yesterday I was reading, that here in the Netherlands that stolen cars has been increased by 10%, and most brands were Toyota / Lexus. So I gonna trust my feeling, and will use your tip! Thx for this video.
That is a nice tip. Thanks. Of course if they still want it, they will take it. Wrecker driver can latch on and drive away in about 10-15 seconds with out stepping of their truck or try to car jack you at the gas station or red light...
I tried the faraday cage at a hotel in montreal to prevent theft and my car was broken into still. They used a computer and they reset the computer system. YOUR WAY IS BETTER. I will be doing this moving forward. Rx-450HL 2018
From a video my wife was telling me about. Some don’t even need keyfobs. So I recommend buying. The club. To make that visual of this car will be a pain to steal. There are easier ones down the road.
The old style mechanical locks for the steering wheel or brake pedal are also very effective. If you think they're awkward to use, it's even more awkward to have your car stolen. You, or your mechanic, can also rig a cutout switch between the fuel pump power wire or in the ignition wire. Put the switch under the dash or somewhere else. Car won't run without fuel. You can also open the hood and remove the fuel pump relay from the fuse box -- car ain't goin' anywhere like that. Simple things that can save you a lot of grief.
@@phillipbanes5484 True, but it's one more barrier to overcome, necessitates carrying bolt cutters, and since far fewer drivers are using steering wheel locks these days the thieves might not be prepared for it. Brake pedal locks are another option.

Hi ,there great and informative video! I've just bought a new Lexus and I was wondering if there's a setting to turn off the feature where you simply place your hand near the door handle to lock/unlock the car. These cars are in high demand for being stolen, and if possible disabling this feature could help protect my Lexus from theft. I'd rather lock/unlock the car with just my key fob
Phil - don't think you can do it yourself - the dealer can hook up their scan tool to turn that feature off on the new models - let me know how you make out - cheers from Canada!
Thanks for this, wouldn't have even thought of this. I bought a new 2023 IS350 and I've had several strange people park near me and pull away when I open my doors. I park my car far away from the entrance of my facility, so it is unusual to have someone who isn't a coworker park next to me. Luckily I pressed the remote button and didn't start the car because I was only grabbing something.
That's how my 2022 Acura TLX A-Spec was stolen. The men blocked me in my driveway and waited for me to turn on the car and then drove away. They came back few days later and took it. I'm going back to the old school ways (brake/steer wheel lock, wheels lock, off market alarm)
@@EdisonMartin Not a good area and I still wouldn't trust in a good area now. I'm in NJ and even the good areas are getting hit now. Car thefts are like an epidemic here right now.
Hello, I am so glad I found your video, am I able to turn this feature off myself or should I have this done at the dealership before I pick up the vehicle?
New 2018 RX owner, here. I'm stunned that I can't set this up myself, with the ridiculous amount of customizations this car offers. I would never typically have all my doors unlocked when I'm at a gas-station, etc. but rather only the driver's door. However with this setting on.. everything is open as long as the smart key fob is near. Cray.
Here is the secret - the auto companies don't want you locking them out of their car - it will confound their ability to sell you subscriptions now and in the future. Ever wonder why they made a cell phone on wheels without a simple use PIN or "off" switch to stop theft? - I've just invented something that will fix this - see my latest video on the Carquestions channel - Cheers from Canada Muffy!
EXACTLY how my ct200 got stolen🥺. Very informative video! Getting to the point where you almost have to have a garage to own a EV/HYBRID these days cuz of all the thefts of these specifically targeted cars😬.
Thanks for this! My wife's car was targeted via a tracker which I found (car was following me turn for turn so I went to the police station, they sped off). Did a search and fond it under wiper arms.... so my question is, does keeping your fob wrapped in tin foil indoors also work to stop the signal? Thanks. 🙏
Buy faraday pouch for your key fob its like a anti signal for your remote fob. You onky need to open it or show the fob when you close or opening it. Its a piece if mind and you don’t neeed to wrap in foil at home because its already secured from any remote signal attack.
Thanks for that. I have an older car where you have to press the unlock button and insert the actual key in the ignition so if I got one of these cars with that system With passive unlock That's what I would change straight away. As I am used to it anyway
This is useful for when you leave your car in a parking garage at the airport long term. So no one can mess with your car without your actual remote. Simply change it back when you return
A relay attack boosts the signal from your remote. If you leave your car at the airport, you're not going to leave the remote nearby. So this trick isn't really helpful in that scenario. It's most helpful for those who park their car outside at home or if you park nearby at work.
Easy fix get an RFID box to throw your key in. Or sleeve to keep it in. Theres a $25 push to start Kit with a hidden RFID KILL SWITCH. WORKS INCREDIBLE. You have to use one of the RFID Keychain tags it comes with and swipe it wherever you hide the receiver behind any interior panel and it'll beep to notify you the built in immobilizer is unlocked and able to start the vehicle. Bought it and installed it on my old tahoe that got stolen once and they messed up my ignition so using the key didn't matter you could start it without the key. I installed this bad boy super eazy to do as well. Forgot to tell the valet about it and after a half hour and 3 valets trying to get my vehicle started with no luck I had to go with them to start it up.
Keep in mind this is only ONE attack vector. Good security means approaching it from many angles. Thieves can reprogram using the OBD2 port...there are locks for that. There is a new special type of wheel lock hat makes it much more difficult for removal and has a built in alarm....IGLA security system requires a special password in order for it to start and move the vehicle if you leave a started car and re-enter. I am actually keeping my key in a pouch and using Remote Connect to lock/unlock the vehicle, then using the keyfob next to start button for starting. No more smartkey entry but this feels more secure. This works even if the remote is in battery saving mode, which is interesting.
Yes I'm aware of all the various methods JAHD - but can't thank you enough for putting me onto Author Alarm - Just what I was searching for ! Cheers from Canada and thanks again.!
For Toyotas and Lexus if you hold the lock button down on your key FOB and at the same time press the unlock button 2x's this puts your key FOB in battery saving mode. Now you can't open the door as a convenience. To unlock the door just press the unlock button. Do you know if this also hides your signal from your vehicle if you don't have "elec" key in settings?
Best solution is a faraday pouch. They have small key fob pouches that you can slip your key into and out of. You can both save the convenience and eliminate theft at the same time.
Thanks for the very helpful information! Any ideas why someone would be taking a photo of the VIN on the Lexus? What can they do with that information?
I'm no expert, but seeing many videos of persons looking/taking pictures of the vin number, I'm guessing you can order a key for that serial number. I always cover my vin number, with a piece of tape. Mechanics and dealer s just open the door and get the vin number from the label on the door frame
Not sure, but I have been told that the code being sent from the key to the car is the result of a specific algorithm , that the VIN number is a critical part off. I know for a fact that the algorithm for a specific model of KIA was figured out, so all they need is the VIN to figure out your code which they can dump on any key and use it! Cover your exposed vin, it’s safer
My new Mazda CX-5 has the ability to stop the key fob from always sending out a signal. You press the lock button on the key fob 4 times in a row then a 5th time while holding it, you then hear a double beep from the car which tells you the walk up unlock and push start no longer function. You now use the buttons on the key fob to lock and unlock, and to start the car you hold the key fob hard against the start button while pushing on the start button. I think the start button is reading a chip in the key fob. Lexus and Toyota can apparently be unlocked and started by a thief accessing the wiring loom from behind the front headlight. This is accessed simply by pulling the front corner plastic bumper away. It’s frighteningly easy and quick for them. They obviously need to know what they’re doing though. I’ve also made an ingenious brake pedal lock and fitted a metal plate to cover the computer port under the dashboard. I’m now thinking of some type of basic alarm that’s powered off a seperate battery and activates a latching relay to sound a very very loud piezo siren inside the cabin to disorient the thief. Just trying to work out how to activate the alarm. Maybe a pressure sensor under the driver seat cushion or a reed switch on the drivers door. Or maybe a mercury switch placed somewhere that the thief would have to move.
Is it true that if the theives use CAN injection attack (i.e, through the headlight), they would still be able to get in with the keyless entry turned off? They could just tell the system to unlock the door.
I've gated, fenced and garage my cars. After my Lincoln got stolen and recovered, I became paranoid. Lexus, I do this with my cars now. Screw car thieves
Or just turn off your key. Useful when washing your car with fob in your pocket. No changing settings. It is called, "■Turning an electronic key to battery-saving mode"
With the Lexus card that you keep in your wallet and auto starting it on your phone with the newer models you dont even need the foh key. Good video though appreciate the tip!
Hi Mark, I saw you checking cars and I wonder if you could check my wife's car to see if it needs anything? What do you charge for your expert advice? My wife spend around $2,000 twice a year when she goes to her dealer and I am just a little suspicious as she hardly drives 4,000 km between visits.
Sorry Pete - retired from retail trade - best advice - buy a Toyota - and just do what is required per the owner's manual, at the correct mileage and absolutely nothing else unless something is definitely broken or worn - front brakes go at 80k rears at 120 in most cars - if your driving around 10k a year you can cut out one visit for sure
@@carquestions Toronto, Canada, Just wondering do the Toyota Rav4 have option to shut off in menu to protect from Relay attack? Im just researching as mine is coming any day now. 🙏
There is a similar feature that works on the key-fob side and I find that to be more convenient. What I do is disable the keyless functionality on the fob itself every night and in the morning I turn it back on.
We just had someone steal our car and now we're looking at how to prevent mum's Lexus from being stolen. This video is great. I'll let her know if she wants to disable passive or not. It's incredibly useful, but y'know, there's a price to pay because of assholes

Nvee - this is a tough one - if they say no, and I'm skeptical about that, there is not much more you can do - but this is giving me an idea for inventing a fix that will stop relay attacks - maybe a go fund me project? - Cheers from Canada!
With the vehicle running, do you need to hold the fob near the start button, until you hear the beep, to turn the vehicle off? Or, simply press the start button to turn the vehicle off?
Faraday box prevents this theft and it's easy to get in the habit of keeping the keys in it at home or traveling. I don't want to disable useful features on my car so I prefer the Faraday. My wife rarely drives my Lexus so the spare key lives in the box. She knows where it is if she needs it.
I have a faraday key case. It adds a little bit of volume in my pocket, but it gives me the peace of mind that I know my keys are not accessible remotely.
we just had our rx450h stolen, we keep the key in a Faraday pouch and a Faraday box and it still got nicked, they probably followed my wife around and stole the signal when she was out and about. Since that i have learned so much about simple security, as in this video, kill switches and ghost immobilizers.
They can also just break in and reprogram without the key - likely what happened in your case - put it in a garage or block it somehow - Cheers and good luck David!
Holy crap I had no idea. I have a Lexus GS350, super rare and hard to replace. I just may take you up on this tip, OR get myself an RF blocking key hanger.
I recently read that you should not use your fob to lock your car when you park. Because a thief can copy the code when you press the lock button when you are leaving. So I have started using the door lock on the door to lock the car when I leave it. Do you know if this is true? And if so is it worth the effort to remember to use the door lock instead of the fob?
From a security standpoint is this any different than putting key fob in sleep mode as shown in other video. Also for 2021 gx where setting does not show up on multimedia display there is a manual method that was posted, i think excerpt from customization section of service manual where you open and close door and press lock or unlock button several times in specific sequence. Do not have to go to dealer.
Thanks for the info Bob - good to know - The only difference is when you change the car setting inside the car it stays that way no matter what you do with the key remote - the key change method will change back every time you use the key to get in the car - must be reset every time you exit the vehicle - Cheers from Canada!
Hi Mark, I just watched your video and it very interesting. But I will to ask you a question. The security light on my Dashboard went off after I did this , Does it matter? I used Rx 450h
I keep me keys on a hook in my bedroom that is more than 15 feet from an external wall. You can also get a shielded box to keep your keys in off amazon. It doesn't help in the Walmart parking lot.
Lexus has a fob disable feature…press & hold the lock button and press unlock twice. The light will flash. Press any key fob button again to resume normal wireless entry.

Quite right Grant for 2016 and up you can do that - 2015 and lower you can't - Cheers from Canada!

The next time I have my ODB2 connected (with Carista app), I’ll have to see if the option is available but I suspect not. I'm not a fan either - or of any car built after 2016 - until they put in cyber security a kid can steal it - it's ridiculous
I tried the faraday cage at a hotel in montreal to prevent theft and my car was broken into still. They used a computer and they reset the computer system. YOUR WAY IS BETTER. I will be doing this moving forward. Rx-450HL 2018

They could break in but not steal it, right?

I park my car far away from the entrance of my facility, so it is unusual to have someone who isn't a coworker park next to me. Luckily I pressed the remote button and didn't start the car because I was only grabbing something.

Did you have this option in your menu? I have a 2022 IS, and I don’t see it.
That's how my 2022 Acura TLX A-Spec was stolen. The men blocked me in my driveway and waited for me to turn on the car and then drove away. They came back few days later and took it. I'm going back to the old school ways (brake/steer wheel lock, wheels lock, off market alarm)

Excellent video But they have faraday pouches which are simple to slide your key in and they really work
Except people need to put all keys in and sometimes forget - they don't work if you leave out your spare keys
New 2018 RX owner, here. I'm stunned that I can't set this up myself, with the ridiculous amount of customizations this car offers. @carquestions thank you for your reply. Great tip. I do keep both wrapped in a foil pouch indoors lol
@@gous5649 Double wrap I hope
Buy faraday pouch for your key fob its like a anti signal for your remote fob. You onky need to open it or show the fob when you close or opening it. Its a piece if mind and you don’t neeed to wrap in foil at home because its already secured from any remote signal attack.

This is useful for when you leave your car in a parking garage at the airport long term. So no one can mess with your car without your actual remote. Simply change it back when you return
Good advice AI - Thanks - Cheers from Canada!

Excellent - Cheers!

Hey Pete. Very informative. Question- just to make sure. Will this also work on my 2017 Lexus RC 300 F sport model? Thanks
Check your menu for the same setting - if it doesn't have it then only the dealer can do it. - Cheers!
Yes
It will
Keep in mind this is only ONE attack vector.

Anytime Joe - Cheers from Canada!
Works for some not all - Cheers!

@@jgmallin7080 I dont think the key would start the ignition, you have to have the fob, right?
Not sure, but I have been told that the code being sent from the key to the car is the result of a specific algorithm , that the VIN number is a critical part off.
I know for a fact that the algorithm for a specific model of KIA was figured out, so all they need is the VIN to figure out your code which they can dump on any key and use it!
Cover your exposed vin, it’s safer
@@katchozzzwill do.
Lots of good advice and ideas Aussie - thanks and Cheers from Canada!
Is it true that if the theives use CAN injection attack (i.e, through the headlight), they would still be able to get in with the keyless entry turned off? They could just tell the system to unlock the door.
It would all depend on their software - some could basic ones maybe not - Cheers!
I called Toyota and supposedly models made in 24 and beyond have had software updates that have more security to prevent this type of attack.
You can also use a piece of aluminum foil and wrap the fob completely in the foil and this will also protect you car from being stolen.
